2013 Toledo Cheese Days Magazine
Cheese Day weekend is the pinnacle of fundraising efforts in Toledo. Our fellow Lions have devoted many hours of volunteer work to ensure that Cheese Days remains the best summer event in Lewis County for the entire family to attend. All the hard work you see is done by community volunteers and all profits from Cheese Days go right back into our wonderful community. The Toledo Lions Club sells firewood and fireworks to help fund college scholarships, school supplies for students and food for special school events. Last November, we gave away 75 frozen turkeys at our annual Turkey Bingo and at Christmas we distributed food baskets to many families in need. We are continuing to add bricks to our Veterans Wall of Honor, located at the north end of Toledo’s city park. Engraved bricks can be purchased in honor of any serviceman or woman for $100. Applications for a veterans brick are available at Toledo businesses, at the wall and online at our new website, located at www.toledolionsclub.org. Look Inside: Schedule of Events, page 4-7 Big Cheeses, page 10-11 Remembering Toledo Lion George Murdock, page 13 Cheese Days Royalty, page 16 Car Show Sponsors, page 17-24 Veterans Wall of Honor, page 31 School Gardens, page 34 History of Cheese Days, page 41 Bob Schmid at the Veterans Wall of Honor, see story on page 31 These are just a few examples of the many ways the Lions Club supports Toledo. So have a fun summer, support the Lions Club by attending Cheese Days and when you see someone wearing the yellow Lions vest at any of the events be sure to thank them for their contribution in making Toledo a better place to live! Originally from Eaglesville, Missouri, Skinny moved westward during the Great Depression finding work wherever he could. “These being the days of the Depression, Dad more or less lived the life of a hobo,” Janet said. Skinny finally migrated to Vancouver, where he met Opal and got married. He moved the family to the Toledo area in 1940 and found a place across from the Lone Yew Grange, where he raised five kids. Janet was the oldest and learned at an early age what it was to do chores and odd jobs. She and her siblings found ways to earn extra income by picking strawberries and raspberries as well as collecting cascara bark, tree moss and wild ferns. After graduating from Toledo in 1954, Janet worked at Amy's Cafe across from the bank and Cora and Ray Paul and Janet Pruett, courtesy photo Rakoz's Shake Shop. Janet met Paul Pruett through family connections. Paul was from North Carolina but he had other family in this area. They were married in 1959 and later had five children: Thurman, Jane, Doris, Jeff and Anita, plus ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. They bought the property around the corner from where she was raised and still call the area home. In 1985, Janet began teaching an oil painting class at the Toledo Senior Center, attracting artists from Centralia, Longview, Ryderwood, Glenoma and everywhere in between. In 2006, Paul passed away after 47 years of marriage. 2013 Toledo Cheese Days — Page 10 Harold Boone, 2013 Toledo Big Cheese Big Cheese Biographical Review Harold Boone was born at the Toledo Hospital on April 30, 1937, to Elmer and Dorothy Boone. The fourth of seven children, his siblings included Elmer (Scoot), Robert, Ida Lee, Kenneth, Carol Ann and Dennis. In 1958, Harold married Pat, the love of his life. They had three children, Tamara, Brenda and Kenneth and later seven grandchildren. Harold was drafted into the United States Army in 1960 and served from 1960 to 1961. He traveled to many places in those two years, including San Francisco, Chicago, New York and many places in Germany. When he returned home, he went to work for Weyerhaeuser, Kraft Foods, and Olson Trucking, as well as other logging companies, until his retirement in 1999. He has continued farming during his retirement and is involved with the Toledo Lions Club. After touring the world, Harold realized he would rather live in Toledo than anywhere else. He and Pat built a house on Collins Road in 1964 and he still lives there. The Boones spent most of their days farming, milking cows, raising cattle, baling hay and fishing on the Cowlitz River. Harold remembers the fish being so thick on the Cowlitz that he could practically walk across the river on the backs of the fish. In the winter of 1955, the Cowlitz froze over and he really could walk on water. Harold still loves to farm and hay during the summer. “Haying and picking tansy would take up the whole summer,” he said. “Pat and I worked together to keep the tractors, mowers, rakes, balers and other farm equipment in working order. We would rob Peter to pay Paul, and it always seemed to work out for us. We all worked hard. I could throw hay bales with the best of them and still can!” Pat’s passing in October 2012 has been hard on Harold. “As I venture out through completely new territory of life on my own, you’ll notice that I’ve remained true to myself, and to the love and spirit that I learned during 54 years of a wonderful life with my best friend at my side,” he said. Born 100 years ago on Feb. 15, 1913 in Scotland, Toledo Lion George Murdock emigrated to America through Ellis Island while in grade school. He grew up in Seattle where he graduated from the University of Washington, married Helen Barnes and served as an officer in the Navy during World War II and later in the Reserves. He was a teacher and football coach at Winlock for many years, playing against the Indians and Toledo football coach Ted Hippi. It is rumored Murdock greased the uniforms of his players to make them harder to tackle. Murdock later moved to Castle Rock to become their principal and Hippi moved to Centralia. In 1955, Murdock was asked to be superintendent of the Toledo School District and he agreed, on the condition that Ted Hippi be hired as THS principal and become the head football coach. Murdock insisted the teachers he hired live here in the district and told them they were obligated to participate in and serve their community outside of school. "George was very good at delegating," said longtime friend and colleague Gary Springer. "We had a shortage of good teachers back then, so when we would hire a new teacher, we'd also find a house for them in town. By we, I mean George would have me find them a house." Springer said Murdock arranged to expand the high school, now the present middle school campus, by having the Toledo Lions Club purchase timber land next to the school at Days Grove and hold it until the school district could pay for it. The following year the timber cut paid for it all. George then helped build the football field at the present middle school, getting all the dirt, hauling and drainage donated. Later, he helped build the football field at the present high school, as well as W.F. West's field in Chehalis, and helped build the Toledo city park. Ken Norberg (Toledo class of 1966) said he once witnessed Murdock, a former fullback and kicker for the Huskies, walk onto the THS field at half time wearing dress shoes and kick a solid field goal from the 50-yard line with no apparent effort. George knew how to motivate people to finish community projects. He was good at organizing work parties and getting donated materials and volunteer labor. He was still a mover and a shaker in retirement, often directing the work of others from a sofa in his living room or from his pickup truck. Ron Smith recalled how Murdock would park in the street, honk his horn and people would come over to his truck to see what he wanted. "One time George called me up on a Saturday and asked if he could borrow my [Caterpillar] for a few hours," said Ed Borte. "I said, 'Sure, George, I guess that's all right.' He said, 'Great! Someone will come by to get it in about four minutes.' And they did!" The Murdocks also organized numerous community activities in addition to Cheese Days, including softball, bowling and cribbage tournaments, an annual apple cider squeeze and smelt dipping. Special thanks to George Jr. and Barbara Murdock Olson. 2013 Toledo Cheese Days — Page 13 2013 Toledo Cheese Days — Page 14 Students at Toledo High 2013 Toledo Cheese Days — Page 15 Meet this year’s 2013 Cheese Day princesses Carrie Anguiano, 18 Hello my name is Carrie Anguiano. I turned 18 on May 30th. I have gone to Toledo since kindergarten. I decided to try something new by going to Winlock school my eighth grade year. I came back my freshman year, then left again my sophomore year... I finally came back my junior year, so I could graduate with my kindergarten class. Now in my senior year, I decided to start becoming more involved with my school and community. By playing basketball earlier this year, volunteering for my church, and joining Big Brothers Big Sisters. I volunteer as much as I can when I am not working at McDonald's. My dad is Jose Anguiano and my mom is Carrie Anguiano. I have three sisters and one brother. Brittiannie, Felicia, Lynsie and Ryan. I have two cats named Ducky and Smokeeta, who just had 5 kittens! I also have a dog named Karizma. I want to go into the medical field and work with teeth. The reason why I wanted to be a part of Cheese Days is because ever since I was little I always wanted to be a princess. Corny, I know but I just always thought it would be so fun. Now having it be my last year of school, I didn't want to graduate knowing that I didn't run for Cheese Days at least once. It is just as amazing as I thought it was going to be. I love my town and I am grateful to have this opportunity to support it. Shy-Anne Hill, 13 Hello my name is Shy-Anne Hill, and I was born on 6/9/2000. I have lived in Toledo my whole life. I love this little town. When I grow up I want to be a kindergarten teacher at Toledo Elementary School and have a small photography business on the side. I love kids, my family, and my community. Now you know a little bit about me. photos by Cyndi Philbrook, coordinator 2013 Toledo Cheese Days — Page 16 Welcome to the 2013 Toledo Cheese Days Car & Motorcycle Show Presented by the Toledo Lions Club, Hosted by Classic Cruisers Car Club Saturday, July 13 Toledo Middle School 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Awards at 4 p.m. Car entry fee $15 Hillard’s Auto Body 3716 Jackson Hwy Chehalis 360-266-9820 John & Nancy Durham Brian Durham PO Box 513 387 Cedar Creek Rd Toledo Lakeside Industries, Inc Asphalt Paving PO Box 636 Centralia 360-736-2847 360-736-0648 Fax Bruce Armstead Trucking Pops, JJ & Deanna Log Hauling 222 Sareault Rd Toledo 360-749-2306 360-864-6902 Pacific Testing & Inspection, LLC Materials Testing & Special Inspection Leslie A Croxton OwnerBusiness Manager 2417 Harrison Ave Centralia 360-736-3922 360-807-6002 Fax Gary & Sharon Blair Family PO Box 798 Napavine 360-262--0580 S&T Hauling Scott Reed 423 Toledo-Vader Rd. 360-520-5966 Northfork Construction, Inc. The Toledo Lions Club built the wall to honor past and current veterans of any war, anywhere. Bricks cost $100 each and feature three rows of engraved text and a military branch insignia. Forms are available at the wall and online at www.toledolionsclub.org. We chose not to limit it to people from the area or to Lions members, and we already have bricks for veterans from all the U.S. wars as well as veterans of peacetime. “We have memorials to certain wars, but they mainly honor people who were killed in wars, not just their service,” said Kathy Morrison, Lions district governor for Washington state’s District 19G. “As far as I know, there isn’t anything like this anywhere.” The idea for the wall came from Toledo resident Bob Schmid, who convinced his fellow members of the Toledo Lions Club to support the project. Toledo Lions pour the reinforced plaza. “Whenever I see a veteran anywhere, I tell them thank you,” Schmid said. “This wall is our way of honoring veterans from different areas of time.” Several local families have multiple generations of veterans listed side-by-side, and every American war or skirmish is represented by a veteran, including a brick from the local Indian uprising of 1855. “Some people on the East Coast probably think we’re still fighting Indians,” said Mike Porter of the Winlock Lions Club. Toledo Lion Kendall Richardson has led the wall’s design and construction through several phases. “This wall will withstand anything, including high flood waters,” Richardson said, adding that the wall’s reinforced foundation could support a much larger project in the future. “We tried to match a project we did four years prior with stone work,” he said, referring to the memorial for Mel Holland, a Toledo alumnus and veteran who went missing in action in Laos in 1968. Richardson said the veterans wall was designed to encompass the original memorial and continues with the same style of cultured stone features. The core structure of the wall is completed and new bricks will be added over time as they are ordered and engraved. As of this Cheese Days, there are already nearly 300 engraved bricks set and there is plenty of room for hundreds more in the future. Brick order forms are available at the wall and online at www.toledolionsclub.org. 2013 Toledo Cheese Days — Page 31 For all your equipment repair and containerizing needs 159 Labree Rd. If we can provide the opportunity for outdoor classrooms that are filled with learning and nurturing elements, we will have a better chance of growing healthy, vital children and young adults. Now in its second year, the Toledo School Garden Initiative has expanded to include a garden at the north end of the elementary school. Together with Bob Taylor of the WSU Lewis County Master Gardener program, we are able to give the students lessons on pollination, watersheds, seed starting, recycling and direct seed sowing. The idea is to incorporate reading, writing, math and science in lessons that are really hands on. Students at the elementary school garden are growing blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, asparagus, pumpkins, corn, squash, sugar snap peas, kale, chard, lettuce, turnip greens, garlic, chives, lupine, bachelor buttons, zinnia, marigolds, johnny jump ups and a whole bunch of mystery items. Summer watering is needed. Bob Taylor has been such an amazing asset, team mate and cheerleader for the elementary school. Other key volunteers worth thanking are Jack Bruener, Charmaine Gill, Vanessa Carver, Maryann Reynolds, Emily Morgan, Connie Paris, Stephan Dillon, Chuck Reynolds and John Ball. This project is only successful because it has been well supported in our school system. Sharon Bower, the district office crew, teachers and principal Lisa Hull have been instrumental in every step of the way. And of course the children themselves are to thank. Their enthusiasm and overall craving for this kind of knowledge and experience has given real meaning to this project. The look in just one of their faces on a garden day is worth a thousand words. On any given recess that Bob and I are on the campus, we'll have 25-40 students working for just the sheer joy of connecting with the earth. This should give us all hope. 2013 Toledo Cheese Days — Page 34 S 2013 Toledo Cheese Days — Page 35 www.timberlandbank.com Member FDIC 360-864-6102 360-864-6104 Fax 101 Ramsey Way Toledo, WA 98591 360-785-3552 360-785-3887 Fax 209 NE First Street Winlock, WA 98596 360-740-0770 360-740-0776 800-562-8761 714 W Main Street Chehalis, WA 98532 2013 Toledo Cheese Days — Page 36 Riverfront property available, ideal for boat owners A local man helps his daughter escape their house when the Cowlitz River flooded Toledo and Eadonia in 1903. They built a factory at the end of Second Street where fine quality American Cheddar and pimento cheeses were made. The next year they added an ice machine that provided cold storage and ice for public use. After a fire, the cheese plant was moved and storage lockers were available for public use at the cheese plant. Cheese, butter, casein and ice were all produced here in Toledo by 1927. The closure of the cheese plant in 1945 signaled a big change, but the making of cheese had already been discontinued with only powdered milk and butter being produced. The cheese plant was closed partly due to competition by larger co-op plants. When members of the Cowlitz Valley Cheese Association gathered Toledo in the 1890s, courtesy of the Lewis County Historical Museum. to receive their first checks in June 1919, a party followed with cheese sandwiches and coffee. Such a pleasant time was had that it was decided to make the affair an annual event and invite the public. Therefore, June 1920 was the first Cheese Day, and the site for this event was Days Grove, now the site of the annual classic car show. A dance platform was erected, carnival secured, baseball game planned, speakers contacted and tables spread with cheese to be cut as needed. It was a wonderful day. Folks arrived in town early by cars, buggy, horseback, buckboard and on foot. The day was one of good feeling, visiting and even planning for Cheese Days to come. Cheese Days has been sponsored by various civic groups over the years. The Toledo Lions Club took the matter in hand in April of 1948. Over the years the events have evolved, it was even discontinued during WWII. A Logging jamboree was a big part of Cheese Days in the 1950s to 1970s. The classic cars have been a feature for many years now with hundreds of entries every year and thousands of visitors coming to Toledo to look at the cars, watch the parade and enjoy in the fun. 2013 Toledo Cheese Days — Page 41 *Services include: Medical, Dental, Behavioral Health *Medicaid, Medicare and Private insurance welcome *Sliding fee scale available for those with limited income *Bilingual Services Call for an appointment today!
