READ something serious
When Mrs Creasy goes missing in the simmering hot summer
of 1976, 10-year-olds Grace and Tilly decide to investigate
by finding out whether or not God is everywhere, as they’ve
been told. They reason that if so, then Mrs Creasy is safe
somewhere. As they visit the various houses in The Avenue,
their questions spark memories of things that happened
nine years earlier and the people who live in the cul-de-sac
start giving up their many and varied secrets. As doors – and
mouths – begin to open, the amateur detectives find out
more than they could possibly imagine. Joanna Cannon’s
debut novel, The Trouble With Goats and Sheep, is crammed
with memorable – occasionally downright nasty – characters
and its unusual subject matter makes this a book readers are
not likely to forget in a hurry. Fascinating stuff – we loved
it. HarperCollins, R330. • Groovy granny Marie Sharp is a year
older in Virginia Ironside’s No Thanks I’m Quite Happy Standing
– her third witty book about the hip pensioner. Marie has a
new lodger who’s into conspiracy theories, has an intractable
iPhone and is planning a trip to India. In the usual ups and
downs of life, Marie is burgled; her ex-husband Dave is still
around (and getting too close for comfort); her cat, Pouncer,
is starting to look peaky; part of her garden wall collapses;
the builders wreck her garden; and, worst of all, her beloved
grandson, Gene, is getting too old to want to hang out with
his gran. This delightful book is hilarious and touching by
turns. Quercus, R360.

Basement Jaxx’s latest offering, Junto
Remixed, comes on the 20th anniversary
of their first release, so prepare yourself
for some pure, danceable and upbeat
tracks. It seems the duo are less
concerned with bringing anarchy to the
dance floor and instead have delivered a
selection of songs that will lift spirits, put
a smile on your face and a bounce in your
step. So let the good times roll on...
Watch Something Nice
with a Dash of spice!
The Nice Guys sees Holland March (Ryan
Gosling), a down-on-his-luck private eye
in 1977 Los Angeles, and Jackson Healy
(Russell Crowe), a hired enforcer who
hurts people for a living, form an unlikely
partnership after a young woman named
Amelia (Margaret Qualley) mysteriously
disappears and they are hired to find her.
March and Healy soon learn the hard way
– because if we’re honest the easy way just
isn’t as much fun – that other unsavoury and
pretty dangerous people are also looking
for their girl. Their investigation leads them
to some dark places as they discover that
anyone who gets involved in the case seems
to wind up dead. Can these two save the
day? (In cinemas now.)

Salute to the malts
Whisky connoisseurs from across the city recently got together to sample
the best that the industry has to offer at the Whisky Live, the Pretoria Live
Celebration at Brooklyn Square. Attendees got to sample a range of whiskies
– from single malt Scotch to blends, bourbon to Irish.
The theme for this year’s SPAR women’s Challenge Pretoria is `I am grateful’
and every guest who walked out of the Atterbury Theatre after the launch of
the race recently, had something to think about. Especially after they heard
the stories of people like Helga Barkhuizen, Izel van Zyl and JG Oosthuizen.
This year, SPAR is encouraging all race participants to count their blessings
and to recognise how much we all have to be grateful for. Taking stock of
everything you have to be grateful for can be very liberating and empowering,
which is exactly what the SPAR Women’s Challenge is all about.

‘ ‘
Ek dink ek sal maar by
die sing-ding hou, maar
mens weet nooit…
Ska-rumba, Vlieg Hoog, Wit Vlag, die lys van treffers is nimmereindigend … alles
waaraan Juanita du Plessis raak verander in goud. Sy is een van Suid-Afrika se
blinkste sterre en ons het met haar gesels om meer oor haar musiek, drome, haar rol
as ma en haar nuwe album uit te vind.
Het jy altyd geweet jy wou eendag
sing?
Ek het op skool reeds liedjies geskryf
maar nooit voor mense gesing nie. Dis
eers nadat ek vir Doepie, wat destyds
deel van ‘n dansorkes was, ontmoet het
en gereeld saaam met hom na optredes
gegaan het dat die gogga werklik gebyt
het.
Vertel ons van jou heel eerste optrede.
Dis was seker vreeslik senutergend.
My eerste vertoning in Suid -Afrika
was by die Ermelo skou. Hulle het my
bespreek toe Ska-rumba net begin
gewild raak het. Nodeloos om te sê - ek
kon enige iets anders sing, maar die
gehoor wou net Ska-rumba hoor!
Jy het al sowat 17 albums op jou
kerfstok, is daar dalk ‘n album of
liedjie wat ‘n ekstra-spesiale plekkie in
jou hart hou?
Om liedjies uit te sonder is soos om jou
kinders uit te sonder - ek kan eintlik nie.
Ek dink die liedjie wat die mense altyd
laat saamsing en hande swaai is beslis
Ons Koning kom vanaf die gospel album
`Vlieg hoog’. My aanhangers is ook gek
oor Lief vir jou, Hambamba, en Toe staan
die wêreld stil.
Enige belangrike lesse wat jy al in jou
loopbaan tot dusver geleer het?
Beslis! Tydens my kuier in Nashville as
aanbieder van die Country Hart program
12 Get It Pretoria July 16
wat destyds op kykNET te sien was, het
ek net weer besef hoe gelukkig ek is om
‘n suksesvolle loopbaan in musiek te kan
hê. Daar is soveel uitstekende musikante
en sangers daar buite wat net wag om
raak gesien te word. Die grootste drome
begin gewoonlik met ‘n musikant wat
op ‘n straathoek staan en sing. Daarom
probeer ek my bes om altyd nederig en
dankbaar te bly.
Jou kinders, Ruan en Franja, werk nou
aan hul onderskeie loopbane in die
musiekindustrie en word gereeld saam
met jou op die verhoog gesien. Sou jy
absoluut hulle eie keuse was. Ek dink
jou kinders kon leer?
Om altyd op te kyk .
Wat sal jy sê is die grootste les wat jy
van hulle geleer het?
Die gesegde; “practice what you
preach”.
Wat beteken die woord ‘ma’ vir jou?
Om onvoorwaardelik lief te wees vir
my gesin, hulle te ondersteun en hul
drome saam met hulle waar te maak.
En natuurlik om God se lig en liefde in
hul lewens uit te straal.
Jy is nou besig om aan ‘n nuwe
gospel album te werk wat na
verwagting teen die einde van die
jaar beskikbaar sal wees. Kan jy ons
meer vertel?
Op hierdie stadium is ek nog besig om
te skryf en om materiaal bymekaar te
kry. Ek wil met hierdie album en liedjies
sê wat die Here wil hê ek moet sê.
Waar kry jy die inspirasie vir jou
liedjies vandaan?
Mense, gebeure en situasies inspireer
my. Ek raak maar baie stil as ek skryf.
Jy is bekend daarvoor dat jy nou by
elke aspek van die produksie van
jou albums betrokke is. Hoe lank
maak.
sangeresse. Hoekom dink jy hou
aanhangers so baie van jou musiek?
Ek is vreeslik dankbaar dat my
aanhangers van my musiek hou. Ek
sing en skryf musiek waarvan ek hou en
gelukkig val dit ook in my aanhangers se
smaak.

The hunks behind
the band DZL
it appeals to a variety of listeners. The
album is very personal to both of us
as we wrote the majority of the songs
ourselves. Listeners can expect songs
that will speak to their hearts but at the
same time get their feet tapping.
What can we expect next from DZL?
Andries Hendrik: We’ve just launched our
new album so we will be touring the
country, performing at various festivals
and events. Our calendar is already very
full, which we’re really grateful for. We’ve
also just finished shooting a television
series on VIA TV (DSTV Channel 147)
called Lek jou lippe af and we hope to get
involved in more productions later this
year. On the modeling front, we’ve been
invited to attend major fashion events
in Ghana and Namibia so that is also on
the cards. You will also see a lot from
us in terms of our other passion – rhino
conservation.
They are known as South Africa’s sexiest boy band
and we sure can’t argue with that. Get It’s Mariëtte
van Niekerk chatted to Andries Hendrik Potgieter
and Wiaan Fourie to find out more about DZL, their
debut album and their favourite Pretoria hotspots.
How did the name DZL come about?
Andries Hendrik: Since we are both
professional models as well as singers
our record label thought it would be a
clever idea to give us the name DZL –
pronounced Diesel. Our music is also very
country-folk-pop and we love spending
time in the bush. The type of transport
one uses in the bush is usually diesel and
therefore it also fits the name perfectly.
We always say: DZL on the runway, DZL on
stage and DZL in the bush.
Getting to know the guys!
Andries Hendrik
When did you first realise you wanted
to be a singer?
I always knew I could sing but did so
mostly in church and when prompted
by my family. I actually studied to be an
accountant and worked as a business
process analyst for a major JSE firm.
In 2010 I started recording an album
‘Staan as Een/Stand as One’ with Grammy
winners, the Soweto Gospel Choir and
Nedine Blom, and my career just took off
from there.
When did the two of you start working
together?
Wiaan: We met a few years ago at Aardklop
when we were both still solo artists.
It was only in 2014 when Andries had a
performance and needed a guitarist, that
he asked me to play with him. We did a few
songs together and when they got off the
stage … well, the rest is history.
Andries Hendrik Potgieter
Tell us more about your debut album,
DZL. What can listeners expect?
Wiaan: It’s an album for young and old and
everyone will resonate with it. Everyone
who’s bought the album has a different
favourite song, which is great because
Text by: Mariëtte van Niekerk. Images:Francois Olivier
Why do the two of you work so well
together?
Andries Hendrik: We know each other’s
strengths and weaknesses, both on and off
stage, so there is an enormous amount of
trust between us. We have a lot in common
both being models, passionate about
music and the environment. We would
say we are like the two sides of a coin ...
brothers.
Who is your favourite singer of all
time?
Michael Bolton - easy voice, great control
and the best colour
You were recently crowned
as Cosmopolitan’s sexiest
man. How did it feel?
It’s really a cliché but I didn’t expect it at
all! When they announced the winner as
Mr July I actually looked around to see
who Mr July was; lo and behold, it was
me!
How did your modeling career start?
I was fortunate enough to be asked to
perform in Orlando, Florida, some time
ago where I was spotted by an editor
of a fashion magazine in New York. She
asked me to do modeling and after a bit
of negotiation I flew up to take part in
New York Fashion Week. From there the
whole thing just grew and I walked for
some of the biggest designers in the
country, including Palse Homme.
Being a model and singer, you
probably have to follow a special
diet and exercise regime?
I have a strict diet and a strict three
hour per day workout programme.
I do this because it’s part of our
brand and also ensures our income.
Otherwise I would have been all over
those pizza slices and Spur burgers.
Are there any other special projects
you might be involved with?
I love the Limpopo Rhino Security
Group ampaign. It’s my most
important campaign and I spend all
my free time assisting the private
rhino farms in that province. They
receive no government funding and
do it all out of their own pockets
with better results against antipoaching than many. Wiaan and I are
the ambassadors of the campaign
and have a little rhino named after
us. We’re very involved with rhino
conservation in the private sector,
assisting with anti-poaching efforts
and raising awareness about this
issue.
What is your favourite hamburger
restaurant in Pretoria?

What is your favourite health tip?
Eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly and
drink your vitamins.
If you are not working, what do you do

We work pretty much seven days a week

spending time outdoors or just chilling at

Sjoe, it’s a bit long ago

The leading lady
She is one of the country’s most respected media and marketing specialists and
represents some of the hottest talent including Bok van Blerk, Martin Bester and Robbie
Kruse. We sat down with Waterkloof’s Jenny Griesel to find out more about her career,
her many hats and her love of learning.
Born and bred in Johannesburg, you
now call Pretoria home. What makes
Pta so different from other cities?
Pretoria is a thriving, bustling city and
people here seem to enjoy their city
a little more than Jo’burg residents
do. They’re entrepreneurial and enjoy
being part of this community. People in
Johannesburg always seem a lot more
rushed! I have found my soul here and
am proud to call Pretoria home.

You’ve worked for Jacaranda FM, Ster
Kinekor, SABC, Givenchy and recently
became marketing director for Inhoud
Huis. Did you always know you
wanted to work in the media, PR and
marketing industries?
Yes, I was fortunate that I found my
passion early in life, and everything
flowed from there. What is it about PR and marketing that
makes you so passionate about the
industry?
I’ve always been passionate about
building audiences for products, and
creating excitement about things that
I believe add value to the world. It’s
rewarding when you see that the public
is buying in to what you are doing, and
responding to a campaign. Every project
starts with an idea, and how far you take
it, is up to you. Tell us about your first job. Was it all
glitz and glamour?
I joined the UJ campus radio station
as a presenter when I was a student
and worked my way up to marketing
manager, and then station manager.
This is where the seed was planted, and
media seeped into my blood. Today
I serve on the Advisory Board of Tuks
FM at Pretoria University. It’s my way of
giving back, acknowledging my roots,
and I hope to help ensure a healthy
future for this sector.
Your days must be filled with meeting
upon meeting. How do you find time
for everything?
I’m a planner! I plan every day, every
week, every month. I prioritise, and make
time for unexpected things to pop up in
between. I don’t stop when I am tired. I
stop when I’m done!
You also recently got appointed as
the marketing director for the new
production company Inhoud Huis. Tell
us more about your role in this project.
Inhoud Huis was born out of the
company Johan Vorster Songs, founded
by Johan Vorster. Inhoud Huis specialises
in intellectual property development for
multiple properties. There is a music and
publishing division and a media division,
which I head up.
You do a lot of charity work on top of
your corporate work. Why?
I find it extremely rewarding to get
involved with charity projects, and
having had a wonderful life, I try giving
back as much as I can.
Those who know you can confirm
that you are always broadening your
horizons, especially academically.
What are you studying at the
moment?
It’s true! I’m a perpetual student and I
am always studying something or other.
At the moment I am doing a BA (honors)
in media studies through Unisa. I
love the flexibility that studying by
correspondence gives me and I believe
that no learning is ever wasted. I love
keeping my brain active!
What would your advice be to young
budding PR enthusiasts?
Roll your sleeves up, get your hands
dirty and don’t be afraid of hard work.
The best publicists are those who have
a proper understanding of what makes
the media gravitate to certain content,
and how to work with them. Overnight
success takes 10 years. Don’t be afraid
to put in time. If you work hard, and are
good at what you do, there will always
be a place for you.
More about Jenny Who is your favourite author?
Neil Gaiman.
What is your favourite movie?
Silence of the Lambs.
What is you favourite food?
I’m vegetarian, so anything green!

Reflexology foot chart
Where does it come from?
It has been documented that ancient
cultures have been using reflexology for
thousands of years in an effort to ease
pain and provide comfort. Evidence of
this can be found on ancient Egyptian
pictographs, on ancient Chinese
drawings that accompanied the Nei
Ching (a Chinese Medical Book which is
believed to have been written around
2500BC), Foot maps found on native
American Indian Inca documents and
even ancient Greek vases depict the

importance of feet. Just think of the
legend of Achilles’ heel?
Modern times
Gone are the days where people had
to rely only on actions and reactions
to make a proper diagnosis. With the
invention of computed tomography,
better known as CT Scanning, it gets
clearer why reflexologists believe the
organs of the body are mapped on the
feet. If one looks at a full body scan from
the soles of the feet, and travel upwards
towards the head, the reason for this
belief becomes quite clear.
The heart, for example, sits in the left
side of the chest cavity and can be
stimulated by applying pressure to the
ball of the left foot. Every organ has
its own mapped area on the feet and
the different techniques can be used
to locate and stimulate each body part
during a treatment session.
Why should you opt for reflexology?
Because this type of treatment is all
about pressure, you will unfortunately
have to try it, to see if it works.
According to Justine, the simple truth
is that anyone having experienced
a treatment, naturally feels better
afterwards.
Here are a few medical reasons to try it:
- Increased circulation and toxin elimination:
A foot massage has the effect of
increased blood circulation which in turn
can lead to deeper breathing and thus
increased oxygen transport to the cells.
Increased circulation in its turn can also
lead to improved lymph drainage and
help to eliminate toxins that may have
been stagnating somewhere in the body,
causing blockages and ill health.
- Digestive health:
Apart from better blood
circulation,reflexology has also been
known to impact the digestive system.
Compiled by Mariëtte van Niekerk.
Struggling with all kinds of pains and aches? Ever thought about alternative medical
treatments like therapheutic reflexology? And no, it’s not just a whole lot of poking. We
talked to Justine Lombard, a local registered Therapeutic Reflexologist to find out more
about the history and benefits of reflexology.
What is Therapeutic Reflexology?
In its most simple form, reflexology is a
massage where a trained practitioner
massages, presses and stimulates specific
parts of the feet, hands or ears in an
attempt to bring relief from pain. In
essence, reflexologists believe that the
organs of the body are mapped out on
the soles of the feet.
More reasons:
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
During the consultation the therapist
would enquire as to diet and lifestyle
and discuss food drug interaction,
inform patients about heart healthy food
choices locally available, and also discuss
bladder and kidney functioning as these
organs play a key role when it comes to
high blood pressure.
- High cholesterol
Increased circulation along with the
correct diet can work together towards
medication dosages remaining stable
with time.
- Diabetes
As foot reflexology increases circulation
in the feet, special care is taken as the
feet of diabetics tend to be very sensitive.
There are different approaches for Type 1
and Type 2 diabetics as well as those that
have been noted as pre-diabetic by their
physicians.
- Infertility
Because of its balancing effect on the
hormones, foot reflexology may help
firstly to calm and relax anxious minds,
and stimulate the relevant hormonal
interactions and menstrual and ovulation
cycles. Signs are observed and noted,
and it often helps to work in conjunction
with a homoeopath that can monitor
blood hormone levels.
- Headaches & Migraines
Traditional Chinese Medicine suggests
that headaches manifest as a results of
poor indigestions. Foot reflexology can
help stimulate the liver and gall bladder
meridians.
‘
Every organ has its
own mapped area on
the feet and the different
techniques can be used
to locate and stimulate
each body part.
‘
Who can benefit from reflexology?
Although it is important to note that
reflexology does not spot treat specific
illnesses, it can help to stimulate and
strengthen the basic functions of the
body in order to eliminate toxins and
allow the body to activate its own selfhealing mechanisms. One can even call
it a complimentary healing modality meaning it can support or add to other
treatments,or medication already being
received. It can further be seen not only
as a treatment method for a variety
of ailments but also as a preventative
method for maintaining a person’s state
of good health, which is why several
medical aids are now agreeing to pay for
therapeutic reflexology treatments under
certain circumstances. It is however
important to note that it is beyond the
scope of practice for reflexologists to
make any form of diagnosis.

Where taste

Ch
Foodies can now experience the taste sensations that had Madiba and several
other world leaders and celebrities in awe. Chef Brett Ladds brings interactive
cooking with pazzaz to the east of Pretoria.
where Ladds was the executive chef.
When Madiba moved into Mahlamba
Ndlopfu in Bryntirion, he asked his
favorite chef to accompany him, but
Ladds chose to stay put.
History aside, Ladds did not rest on
his laurels but continued to stay in the
culinary limelight over the years.
Recently Ladds, his wife Tracey, Shane
Nowitz and Steven Aespeling decided
to embark on a new venture that turned
into the trendy yet warm Chefs@566.
The result is fine dining at its most
relaxed where exquisite food is prepared
and served as it should be
enjoyed - with joie de vivre.
One look at the
menu and my mouth
started to water. The
relaxed and informal
atmosphere at Chefs@566
and the luscious dishes
available are quite a dichotomy. The
minimalistic décor with bright green
chairs did not prepare me for what
awaited when the first dish was put
down in front of me. The sparkling
chandeliers should however, have given
me an idea that this restaurant offers
more than meets the eye.
The most beautifully presented plates
with Norwegian smoked salmon roses,
German rosti in the shape of whole
pears, a marvellously deconstructed
beef wellington and a mysterious
fairyland of chocolate and liquid
nitrogen ice-cream took my breath
away.
I really enjoy guests sitting down
at the counter in the restaurant
and watch me cook.
Chefs@566, conveniently situated
at Mary Lynn Square at 566 Serene
Drive in Garsfontein, is a chef’s kitchen,
bistro and bakery and also does outside
catering. The eatery opened its doors in
mid-May and according to Ladds, it has
been crazy since the launch.
“It has been like a very pleasant mad
house with guests streaming in,” says
Ladds, who sky-rocketed to fame as an
executive chef when his food regularly
and very publicly received high praise
from the late icon Nelson Mandela.
Mandela’s and Ladds’ paths crossed
when the former president lived in the
Presidential Guest House for two years
There is however, so much more to
Chefs@566 and the menu, though not
overly extensive, could keep you busy for
quite some time before it is possible to
finally choose a dish.
For breakfast (the restaurant opens
early), a freshly baked Chignon dome,
filled with layers of wild mushrooms and
crème and topped with a sunny-side
egg, a breakfast bouquet, infused with
beef chipalatas, button mushrooms,
crispy bacon, olive oil, grilled cherry
tomatoes and a perfect butter egg or a
fluffed butter omelet are but some of the
choices for the most important meal of
the day.
Several delectable dishes are on offer
as main courses such a greek golden
phyllo pies and halloumi and tumeric
stacks but the one that truly grabbed
the imagination and the taste buds, was
Chef Ladd’s signature dish, fillet crème.
In this dish, fillet that melts in the
mouth is served with sautéed potatoes,
infused with shallots and diced and
sautéed mushrooms, coated with crème,
served on golden grilled butter potatoes.
The portions are generous but save
some space for one of Chefs@566’s
desserts such as apple baked roses,
leaf cake served with Belgian chocolate
mousse, liquid nitrogen ice cream or
crème brullée red velvet.
In addition to his down-to-earth
demeanor, his obvious talent and his zeal
for his chosen trade, Ladds is a strong
supporter of an open kitchen concept
that allows for interactive cooking.
Only his cooking surpasses
the charm of Chef Brett Ladds.

he look and feel is funky and
fresh – rustic minimalism with a
touch of vintage.
The serving staff are friendly
and energetic and the offerings on the
menu conjure up expectations of an
exotic dance performed perfectly on the
tongue by little taste angels.
But the biggest surprise at Chefs@566
is the unassuming, welcoming and
enthusiastic approach of celebrity chef
and co-owner Brett Ladds, whose charm
is surpassed only by the delectable food
he prepares.

Chefs@566 and allowes the unbelievable
smells of food to fill the restaurant and

are not only a treat for the palate but

Pride of Africa
They say it takes a pride to serve a king, and that’s exactly the kind of treatment we
received at Tau Game Lodge in Madikwe.
P
eople spend their lives planning
a trip to Africa, where spotting
the Big 5 is something they
have dreamed of since reading
adventure stories as children. Ironically,
for us the journey into the wild was as
easy as jumping into our Alfa Romeo,
and somewhere between singing
along to Mariah Carey and taking
photos of our ‘safari- inspired’ outfits,
found ourselves among a herd of wild
elephants in a matter of hours.
The exotic Africa depicted on
postcards comes alive at Tau – a mere
four-hour drive from Pretoria. From the
moment you leave the national highway
you’ll find yourself on gravel roads and
once Siri has abandoned you – which
she will – the only directions you’ll
receive are from a handful of locals
telling you to “turn right at the marula
tree”. All you can do is throw your hands
in the air, say “welcome to Africa” and go
along for the ride.
The lodge in Madikwe Game Reserve
is the perfect place for families or
romantic getaways. Unlike other game
lodges (often ostentatious and garish),
from the moment you arrive you are
welcomed into a family, who are as at
home in their lodge as you soon will
be. It’s the kind of place where you feel
as if you can kick off your shoes and
walk around the reception area in your
gown at 23:00 trying to find a cephone
connection. Well, we did exactly that –
and there were a few other guests doing
the same thing.
Among the large fireplaces, sinkinto-me leather couches and animal
skin rugs, Tau made us think of Gerald
Durrell’s My Family and Other Animals.
Crocodiles swim lazily in the waterhole
in front of the rooms, monkeys cause
havoc outside the spa while you’re
enjoying a massage and elephants think
nothing of breaking down trees and
fences because this is their home after
all and we are only visitors.
From the moment you’re woken up
gently, at 6:00, an abundance of food
is something you’ll come to expect at
Tau. From coffee and rusks before your
game drive (which is cosily kitted out
Massive beds with heated
blankets are a dream at the end
of a cold evening on the plains.
Dining in the dark while the
elephants drink nearby lets you
know you’re in Africa.
Make yourself at home in the
lodge, which has Wi-Fi hot spots.
with blankets and hot-water bottles)
everything about the lodge ensures
your comfort and gastronomical delight.
After hours on the open plains in the
chill of winter, you’re welcomed back
with hot chocolate and Amarula and a
large breakfast (only three hours before
your next meal).
If eating, sleeping and game drives are
not enough to keep you entertained,
guided walks, spa treatments, animal
conservation projects and even a kids’
club for the little ones are options
for more adventurous guests. We say
adventurous because we could quite
happily sit on the deck in the midmorning sun, cup of home-brewed
tea in hand, watching a fascinating
assortment of animals pass by.
After another evening drive (and we’re
not complaining because it’s not every
day you get to see the entire Big 5 in a
single afternoon) you’re welcomed back
with a glass of warm Glühwein and,
surprise, surprise, another three course
meal in front of a big bonfire in the
boma. It’s so easy to become absorbed
in good conversation, the smell of fresh
air and the sound of crickets chirping
loudly in the still African night, that
before you know it you’ve spent four
hours enjoying the meal. It’s during
these moments that you vow to slow
down and take time out to visit this little
piece of heaven more regularly, where
the complexities of the city seem miles
away.
Here, the only thing that jolts you out
of complete relaxation is the sound of
elephants drinking water or wild dogs
fighting outside your bedroom window
in the middle of the night.
So while the country slept, we walked
out onto our decks and watched the
animals under the moonlight and pitied
those who had not yet been to South
Africa – and specifically to Tau – for
when they do, they’ll have so much to
look forward to.

Bon appétit with Theron`s Meat!
Izak found himself drawn to the world of business
while working with Theron`s on many marketing
as well as charity driven events over the past three
years. These experiences left him wanting for a
more active involvement. “Is it any wonder that I
grabbed the opportunity to learn and work with
Theron`s Meat, looking back at the company`s
heritage and their service to their customers over
the past 33 years?” he said.
The Therons are direct descendants of Jacques
Therond who was part of the French Huguenots
arriving in the Cape of Good hope on the Rotterdam from Nimes, France. They settled in the
Franschhoek Valley in 1668. The Theron family has
collectively been in the meat industry for 67 years,
dating back to Dawie`s grandfather’s first butchery
called Theron`s Butchery, that was situated on the
site that today houses the State Theatre.
Theron`s Meat Products manufacture a wide variety of meat products suitable to use in French
styled dishes, for example the narrow cut marinated belly ribs and delectable pork leg. Theron`s
wide variety cuts of bacon is the perfect star ingredient to use in a French flavoured Fennel Soup
with Crème Fraiche and Bacon Lardons.
The versatile line-up of cold meat cuts, lends itself
to turn any croissants served with a fresh green
salad, into a main meal fit for a queen! Who needs
cake if you can eat delicate meat? The good news
is that the family have very strong South African
roots, and that means they produce a mean and
flavour packed traditional boerewors!
TAKE NOTE – The best part of this business is that
they value their heritage that includes honouring
an old family tradition: the family Theron started
a legacy in the early eighties - once a year they
would sell their braaiwors at half price. A record
that still stands today was set in 1989 when one
of the family butcheries sold a whopping 30 tons
boerewors in one day!
Theron`s Meat decided to revive this proud
heritage and in November 2015 they decided to sell their TOP QUALITY BOEREWORS at
BELOW COST price as a service to their loyal
customers.
Pictured above: Izak Davel, brand ambassador for Theron`s Meat Products, building a hamburger to
delight connoisseurs with a “petit pallet”, assisted by Chantelle Theron, 4th generation and already
involved in the marketing of Theron`s Meat Products!

Even though your garden may look pretty grey and gloomy in winter, it doesn’t mean
your garden has to look like that come summer. Good gardeners always look ahead, even
in the dead of winter.
what to do in your
garden this month
Apart from planting deciduous
trees, shrubs and climbers, you
should also not forget to plant
annuals and perennials that are
just beginning to show colour now.
They will add a pop of colour to
your garden in early spring.
Want your garden to be filled with
luscious, leafy trees? July is the
perfect time to plant deciduous
Edible plants
Ever strolled through your garden
wondering what plants might be edible?
Well, this month the spotlight falls on
baby cabbages. Like they say, dynamite
comes in small packages
Like all things miniature, baby cabbages
have an appeal all of their own. They
don’t take up as much growing space
as big cabbages (which is an important
consideration for small gardens) and
they are ready for harvesting a whole lot
sooner. If you don’t have a large family
then a big head of cabbage can seem to
last forever whereas baby cabbages can
be used up quickly, which means they
are always crunchy and sweet.
Growing cabbage:

Hot tip
As conifers grow actively in winter, it
is a good time to shape and neaten
old plants with judicious pruning.
Water veggies and herbs in
containers twice a week and feed
with a soluble fertiliser every second
week. Fertilise citrus trees with
granular fertiliser on their driplines
and water well afterwards. Divide
asparagus and rhubarb.
crop because it tends to bolt when
temperatures are high, leaving the
leaves tough and bitter. It is also less
plagued by pests in winter. Seed can be
sown from the end of February through
to April. Whether you are growing baby
cabbages or the bigger varieties, the
same rules generally apply.
Sowing:
Sowing seed in seedling trays is
preferable because it is easier to
space the seedlings correctly when
they are transplanted. The seedling
trays must be kept moist while the
seeds germinate, and fairly soon after
germination they can be fed daily with
a much-diluted plant food to get them
growing quickly. Once the plants are
big enough to handle they can be
transplanted.
Go green – inside!
Want some greenery in the
house? You’re in luck because the
Cyclamen is the indoor plant of the
month.
The blossoms of the Cyclamen
twist and turn like tiny butterfly
wings while the silver, marbled
colouring of the foliage accents
the beautiful flower colours of
lavender, rose, maroon, red or
white.
Although the Cyclamen
becomes dormant during summer
and the foliage yellows and dies
back, it is a plant that naturally
blooms in autumn and winter
when the weather turns cool.
Although there appears to be
no growth during the drier, hotter
months, Cyclamen uses its round
tubers to store energy for the next
flowering season.
It’s a stunning, easy-to-care for,
long lasting indoor colour option
that thrives in the cooler weather.
Cyclamens add colour and cheer to
bedrooms, living areas, entrances
and most indoor rooms
and they are also
excellent pot specimens
on patios and in sheltered
areas of the garden.

trees such as oaks, maples, birches and

in the cold, and many varieties turn a
wonderfully warm bronze or orange
colour during the winter months. They
grow best in full sun in an area where
there is good air circulation. Remember
that conifer aphid is very active during
this month, so treat your plants with a

harvesting snails, their hands
became softer, smoother and
younger looking.
A skincare range soon followed,
using the wonders of nature to help
leave your skin looking and feeling
radiant. After all, the experts at
Celltone believe nature to be the
best laboratory. Well established
in the South African market,
Celltone was first launched six
years ago and, since inception has
established itself as a trusty brand.
The range has been extended to
include some of SA’s most premium
tissue oils and a full six-step face
care regime also followed suit.
