Thankful and Blessed
It is hard to believe we are approaching the holiday season,
but it will be here before you know it. We just wrapped up the fall
Parade of Homes and once again the HBA has provided a great
service to its members. Thanks to all the staff and volunteers for
everything they did to successfully market the homes.
I want to begin by saying that I feel blessed to be where
I am and to be doing what I am doing. I know we have been through
an extended rough stretch, but things are so much better than they
could be. Everyone in our industry has had to adjust to the current
times. We are doing more with less. We are all wearing multiple
hats and juggling many balls.
As we have made our adjustments to how we operate, we
have strived to maintain or improve our customer service. In the
past 12 months at least four building supply yards have closed
their doors in our market. It is important for you to know that Smith
Phillips Building Supply is in great shape and working to make
sure our customers get the great service they deserve. We invite
those of you who are not current customers to give us a try on
your next project.
Here are some things you should know:
• We still have our own interior door shop, which helps us to
ensure you get a good quality product.
• We still have a dedicated window and exterior door service
technician on staff to make sure you get prompt service when
there is a problem.
• We still have a dedicated architectural window specialist.
• We still have a roofing specialist on staff to assist with roofing
selections, service and supply
• We still have our own engineered wood designer on staff and we
stock the material in our own yard.
• We still deliver drywall with our own personnel on our own trucks.
• We are still locally owned and operated, keeping the money in
our local economy.
• We still offer roof top roofing delivery and buy our roofing directly
from the manufacturer. We have a deep inventory and back it up
with great service.
All of this adds up to make Smith Phillips Building Supply the
smart place to do business for the building professional.
Southern Yellow Pine Changes Pending
There is a proposal to adjust the strength values for
southern yellow pine framing lumber. This is due to testing that
was recently done on 2 x 4 lumber, and the results are proposed to
be applied to all sizes of the species. This could have a big effect
on truss design, floor system design and ceiling spans. The initial
proposal called for an approximate 25% reduction in the strength
values and was to go into effect almost immediately, once approved.
Several groups are crying foul and working to make the transition
less disruptive and easier to manage. Another hearing is scheduled
in 60 days. Stay tuned for more information.
Drywall manufacturers have announced a 25-35% price
increase for the first of the year. Now they have gone on to
announce that the pending price increase has caused a spike in
demand and threatens to bring about allocation. This could mean
shortages on materials. It is hard to believe we could have a
shortage in this environment, but that shows you what market
forces (albeit self-inflicted) can do.
Roofing manufacturers have also announced increases.
We will be watching this situation closely and let you know as
soon as we know what might happen. These increases may or may
not actually take place.
Composite decking has always been more complicated
than people realize. When it first came out, people thought you
just put it down like treated decking and forget about it. It was not
too long before people found out that you have to be very careful
when installing composite decking. Spacing, fastening, ventilation
and precise joist installation all play a very important part in getting
a good finished product. We all learned that these early products
were not as “maintenance free” as people would like. Now we have
a wave of new products to help solve some of the problems
associated with the earlier products. We invite you to contact us
on your next decking project and see how we can help you get the
most out of the current products and provide your homeowners
with a great finished product.
Chris Yenrick Installed as First
Vice Chair for NLBMDA
The National Lumber and
Building Material Dealers Association
(NLBMDA) has announced its new
leadership team, installed on October
26 at the ProDealer Industry Summit
in San Antonio, Texas. Smith Phillips
Building Supply’s Chief Operating
Officer Chris Yenrick was installed as
First Vice Chair for NLBMDA.
“We are very proud of Chris for
reaching this level of leadership in an
organization that supports building
supply companies across the country,” said Mickey Boles,
President and CEO of Smith Phillips. “He brings a breath of
freshness to the table with his vision for the building supply
industry and its future. He has a talent to get it done and be
heard.”
The National Lumber and Building Material Dealers
Association (NLBMDA) represents its members in the national
public policy arena, with emphasis on efforts to 1) promote the
industry and educate legislators and public policy personnel;
and 2) assist legislative, regulatory, standard-setting and other
government or private bodies in the development of laws,
regulations and policies affecting lumber and building material
dealers, its customers and suppliers. Founded in 1917, the
association has over 6,000 members operating single or multiple
lumber yards and component plants.

Team Hammertime Rides to Fight Multiple Sclerosis
The Smith Phillips Hammertime Cycle Team
struck out to battle Multiple Sclerosis in our 4th year at
the Tour to Tanglewood, September 17 and 18, 2011. We
had several veteran team members, and some newcomers,
as we joined together to raise $11,815 and counting!
Ross Gobble was the standout fundraiser of the team,
followed closely by John Levicki and Mike Sears. The
team had a great weekend of riding thanks to outstanding
weather conditions for the 100+ miles we put in for this
great cause. We invite any
cycling enthusiasts to join the team in
2012. We even have a resident roadskater
in Mike Sears, who skated over 50 miles
the first day. We also want to give a very
special thanks to all our sponsors whose
support made possible our team’s great
jersey, which won the coveted “Best
Corporate Jersey Design” for a third time.
Over the last four years Team Hammertime
has raised close to $50,000 to help the
National MS Society provide services and
education to those fighting the battle
every day. Thanks again to all our friends,
families and co-workers who helped us
raise these much needed funds and made the 2011 Tour to
Tanglewood a great success.
