The Influence of Camp
Friends. Friendship. Confidence. Independence. Love of the outdoors.
Outgoing. Social. Those are the words and phrases that show up over
and over again in answer to the question, “How has your time at camp
influenced you as a person?” on our Five-Year Camper survey.
Conducted over the past two years, we’ve had almost 200 current and
past campers respond to this and other questions about their time at
GAC. Here are just a few of the many ways camp has influenced their
lives:
“It gave me a confidence to be myself as a teenager and brought
out the best parts of me as an adult. I learned a lot about working
with others, managing time and stress, contributing to a positive
environment, and making the most out of every opportunity to have a
lasting impact on a child.” - Alexandria Gamboa
“Gold Arrow has taught me to appreciate nature and actual human
interaction, and has undoubtedly shaped the way I live my life outside of
camp.” - Estie Pyper

CAMPNEWS
Camper Profile: Alice Mansour
What are your favorite activities at camp?
“I love kneeboarding, wakeboarding, waterskiing and rock
climbing, and probably the high ropes course.”
For five-year camper
Alice Mansour and
her family, Gold Arrow
Camp is something
they think about and
talk about all year
long! Alice’s mom
was a camper at
GAC, so Alice and her
brother Eli are secondgeneration campers.
We had a chance to
interview Alice when her family hosted a recent GAC Chat.
Here’s what Alice had to say:
Do you have any favorite camp songs?
“I love the Penguin Song, because you have to move around
a lot and remember stuff.”
Are there any things that you were scared of before you went
to camp?
“I used to be really scared of heights, and when I went
on the high ropes course, I had tons of fun, and now
I’m addicted to going on heights. I did the natural rock
climbing trip when I was really young. I went to the top of
the mountain and saw the view and I loved it, and I’ve liked
going on heights ever since.”
What’s your favorite food at camp?
“Probably the carnival food and the banquet night.”
Why do you come back to GAC each summer?
“It’s a lot of fun, and every year I’ve gone without any friends,
and I make new friends, and I always miss them, so I come
back.”
Anything else you want to share?
“GAC is really fun and I always miss it.”

The Influence of Camp
Love Connection
(Continued from page 1)
“Gold Arrow Camp has been one of the most steadily
influential experiences throughout my life. As a camper, Gold
Arrow taught me how to be responsible for myself in terms
of hygiene and my actions, taught me how to make friends
with anyone although I may not initially believe that we will
be friends, and taught me how to be confident in myself.”
- Hope Hood
Former staffer Sarah
“Chessie” Claferty
married Michael
Headley on October
19th in North Lake
Tahoe. Michael was
a camper and camp
counselor for nine years
at Camp Seagull in
Arapahoe, NC, so they
both love camp!
“Camp has taught me so much! From
early on, I learned so much about
teamwork and how to work well
with others. Camp has helped me to
open up and it’s taught me how to
make friends. It’s always made me
realize how much more fun life can
be without all of the distractions at
home, such as technology.”
- Shelby Williamson
On September
21, Lindsey “Pooh
Bear” Hickman
(former GAC staff)
and JonPaul Davis
got married in
Woodbine, Georgia.
“My time spent at GAC has been the most valuable
experience of my life thus far. High school, College, and my
mid-twenties have been incredible, but nothing amounts
to the learning, growing, and personal development that
happened and continues to happen at GAC. Getting the
opportunity to be a counselor at GAC has shaped me into
who I am today. I discovered what it is I value in life; being
genuine, the importance of gratitude, REALationships,
laughter, kindness, love, the power of optimism, and doing
what you LOVE to do everyday.” - Natalie Goff
“GAC has really just taught me about how being a good
friend and that being accepting and kind to all is one of the
most important things in life. Camp always reminds me to
enjoy the little things, like an extra s’more, or a sunset on
Shaver, or the view while you finally make it to the top of The
Face.” - Molly Buckley
“My time at Gold Arrow Camp has made me a more
independent person and has given me the opportunity to try
so many new things, making me a more outgoing person.”
- Shelby Silverman
“GAC has made a positive change in the way I live because
GAC has helped me grow up, it’s a part of me. GAC has
taught me (through fun and games) to be social and friendly.
Every year there is a different theme and every theme (such
as 2012’s kindness theme) has changed me for the better
in so many ways. If feel like a more ‘real’ person because of
GAC.” - Samuel Blau
Many current and former GAC staffers gathered on a beach
in San Diego on October 26 to celebrate Tristan “Pasty”
Scoble and Mariah “Pearl” Mann’s wedding. The pair met
at camp in 2011 and regaled their wedding guests with
stories about how GAC has played a role in their lives and
their relationship. We wish them the best as they move to St.
Louis and hope they’ll visit us at camp soon. Congratulations
to another happy GAC couple!
