said that it will be a fun time in the sun with exciting party games, wonderful luau-inspired delicacies,
and stimulating conversation. You have received your invitation, and it is time to pick out your most
festive luau attire for the party. This is where your story begins…

CHARACTER DESCRIPTION
Adair Burgundy is always the source of
breaking news from Sun City. Adair is an
ultra-ambitious investigative reporter for the
CBC television station and will stop at nothing
to get the scoop.
A somewhat late bloomer as compared to
other big screen icons, Alex Jade became an
overnight sensation with the release of the
movie Short Toenails. Alex is a quirky
trendsetter that can do no wrong in the eyes of
fans, but has declared war with members of
the media.
Cricket Pewter is the talented gossip columnist
for the Sun City Daily. Cricket knows the
who’s who of Sun City, and is quick to shadow
unsuspecting Hollywood celebrities as soon as
they enter the city limits. It is definitely not a
good thing to be mentioned in the Sun City
Daily gossip column, and the locals know to
avoid Cricket at all costs.
Darby is a rising-star magician who performs
awe-inspiring illusions with intriguing
storytelling. Darby aspires to grow a fan base
large enough to support a world tour, but so
far, Darby hasn’t been able to get out of Sun
City.
Jude Plum is the high-society socialite that
cannot stay out of the trash tabloids. Jude’s
parents own the successful chain of Orbit
Hotels around the world and supply Jude with
a never ending cash flow and high-level
connections. Jude is uber-famous, but for no
reason other than being a very wealthy
troublemaker.
Parson was a poor orphan that learned to sew
by hand - and today, aspires to make a mark
in fashion history. This ultra-reserved aspiring
icon of style has recently opened up his/her
first boutique in Sun City. Parson hopes to
one day have his/her designs worn on the red
carpets of Hollywood.

Piper White is the struggling B movie star.
Known for powerful screams and overly
dramatic chase scenes, Piper is destined to
take over the Hollywood big screen.
According to Piper, if s/he doesn’t make it big
in Hollywood – it will be someone else’s fault,
as this drama conjurer is remarkably quick to
point the blame at anyone for anything.
Greenlee Black is one of the most hilarious
people you will ever have the pleasure of
meeting. Greenlee’s a knee-slapping amateur
comedian at night and a highly-skilled poker
player by day. Greenlee has recently been
pursuing a career as a professional comic.
Trendy, glamorous
summer attire. Optional
prop is a marker and
slips of paper to give
autographs to the other
guests.
Trendy summer attire.
Optional to have poker
chips and playing cards
in every pocket. Bring
some jokes with you!
A former reality star, Ren Peach recently
landed a starring role on a hit soap opera
called Gorgeous Thieves. Ren’s attractive
mug can be seen in most grocery checkout
lines, as s/he is a popular choice for the cover
of teen mags. Unfortunately, sources say that
Ren has allowed the fame to go straight to
his/her head.
Glamorous summer
attire.
Rigny Cyan is the ultra-eccentric pop icon from
Mississippi. Now a music chart topper, Rigny
still speaks with a southern accent and follows
the rules of southern hospitality. However,
claws will pop out if you make Rigny angry.
Quirky pop star summer
attire such as short
dress (female), torn
fishnet stockings and
brightly colored heels.
For a male, ultra-trendy
summer attire.
Story Indigo is the insufferable tennis
instructor. Lacking control for volume and
content, s/he speaks her mind without a care
in the world. A long-time tennis pro, Story is
anything but tolerant of beginning tennis
players and isn’t ashamed to let them know
how s/he feels.
Tennis attire. Optional
to bring a tennis racquet
as a prop.
Waverly Scarlet is the boisterous rollercoaster
operator at the Sun City Amusement Park.
Waverly is anything but friendly and constantly
mocks the customers who board the rides.
Any type of uniform or a
t-shirt and shorts with a
name tag that says Sun
City Amusement Park.
If you look up narcissism in the dictionary,
Winter Olive’s picture would be plastered by
the description. Winter is the friendly, yet selfloving neighborhood butcher with a dreadful
over-exaggeration problem.
Apron and butcher’s hat
with summer attire.
Plastic butcher knife as
an optional prop.

Details, details, details! If you’re speaking to
Dracen Gray, you had better get ready for a
plethora of intricate points and facts! This
over-explaining comedian will jump at the
chance to perform an impromptu standup
comedy routine.
The ultra-mysterious Dakota Lemon is no
stranger to the American trash tabloids.
Rumor has it that this celebrity mogul dabbles
in just about everything that’s illegal and
depraved!
Funny t-shirt and shorts.
Optional to bring jokes
with you.
Very trendy summer
attire. Fake money
popping out of your
pockets as an optional
prop.
*IMPORANT INFORMATION REGARDING CHARACTER ASSIGNMENTS:
Assign your most definite RSVPs and outgoing guests to the required characters and the more tentative,
shy/reserved guests for the optional characters. To figure out who will be a ‘definite RSVP’, it is highly
suggested to send a ‘save the date’ email out to your prospective guests way in advance of the party date so
you can either eliminate those guests from your list who can’t make it (and therefore you will not assign them to
a character) or you can change your party date if enough required-character guests simply cannot make it. It’s
suggested to invite more than the required number of players as any of the ‘required’ guests could cancel at
the last minute and leave you high & dry. You can play as many optional players as you wish and in any
combination that you choose. The optional players have the same materials and same participation level, but
these optional characters are not ‘mandatory’ for the storyline to play out and therefore for the mystery to be
sleuthed appropriately.
What happens if one of your required characters cancels on you at the last minute? First, take a deep breath…it’s
not the end of the world.

HOST DIRECTIVES
Get ready for an awesome fun n’ the sun party with your purchase of the Murder at the luau party game
from mymysteryparty.com! This party is an entertaining and comical mystery where the players act the roles of
hilarious personalities while sleuthing the intriguing story line. This is an excellent choice for your next get
together during the sunshine’y season!
The story is set in a backyard luau party of a local magician (Darby Cerulean) in a fictional town called Sun
City. Sun City is a small town outside of Hollywood and is a popular spot for celebrities to vacation. Sun City
used to be exclusive and void of paparazzi, but in recent years, the press have been watching the vacationing
celebs and this has led to some strife between celebs and the media.
This party is ideally hosted in a backyard and a swimming pool is a plus – however, not required. We have
given you extra bonus games in case you do not have a swimming pool. Also, you can host this essentially
anywhere your guests can get together – indoors or outdoors – just throw a few coconuts and leis around the
space and you’re good to go.
The party pack (this document) needs to be printed in advance of the party. Cut out the clues and slip them
into envelopes labeled with the appropriate round and character for each round of the party. It is optimal to
choose different colored envelopes for each round. There are envelope packs for sale on the My Mystery
Party website in the Party Props section (aka: Prop Emporium).
For a complete surprise, you can elect to upgrade this download to the pre-printed ‘party ready’ party pack
option from the mymysteryparty.com site. The upgrade is located in our side navigation bar and says ‘upgrade
your download to a boxed set.’ This option will include the clues in labeled envelopes and the rest of prepared
game documents –‘ready to go’ (this is an additional charge since we utilize our paper, ink, envelopes, labor,
etc.). This upgrade removes the original price of the download and charges you the difference between the
party ready pack and download version of the game.
We also offer mystery props on the My Mystery Party site in the Prop Emporium including authentic crime
scene barrier tape, crime scene balloons, mystery investigation pens, white face makeup for the victim, victim
t-shirts, etc. These are all optional but are fun enhancements to your night/day of mystery.
During the party, your job as the host is to ensure that the envelopes are given to the guests at the appropriate
times and most of all – that you and your guest are having a blast! Make sure to read these host instructions
for each round prior to the party to ensure that you have everything in place for the big day! Please note - the
host instructions for each round do not disclose who the murderer is, but do not read the Round Three clue
cards if you want to keep the murderer a surprise. (The victim is disclosed in the Round Two clue cards.)

HOST playing a character role:
We definitely encourage our hosts to play along! Choose
any character you wish to play. Everyone should have fun! If you do not want to know the solution, do not view
the final round of clues. If you want to avoid being the victim or murderer, simply choose an optional player to
play. For a complete surprise, get a party ready pack upgrade as discussed above and the clue cards will
come to you, ready to go!
The game is organized into four rounds and is structured as follows:
OPTIONAL PRE-GAME TASKS: these optional pre-game task sheets are to be delivered to each guest before the
party or give them to the guests as they arrive. All pre-game materials are optional and do not alter the
mystery and are intended to enhance the pre-game build up for the event. These tasks are not vital to solving
the mystery and omission of them does not alter the mystery in any way.
APPETIZER (COCKTAILS 4 ADULTS) HOUR / ROUND ONE: Deliver these clues as your guests arrive.
DINNER HOUR / ROUND TWO: Deliver these clues while you serve dinner (optional) to your guests.
DESSERT, AND THE BIG REVEAL/ SOLUTION ROUND THREE: Deliver these clues with coffee/hot cocoa and
dessert (again, it’s optional to serve dessert)
Note: you do NOT have to serve dinner/dessert, this is only suggested and the instructions tell you ‘when’ to
serve it and what to do around the time you serve it. You can simply skip both without a problem and just serve
snacks/appetizers the entire time. However, please don’t have a party without offering some type of food –
even if it’s just snacks.

oPTIONAL PRE-GAME starter
Before the party, encourage your guests to view the Your Mystery Party YourMysteryParty.com/summer website or use the free printable My Mystery Party invitations as they have
the character descriptions included. This way, before the party, they can get familiar with the other characters
that will be at the party, watch the game trailer, and more! There are also hidden/subtle hints about characters
throughout the page so those guests who choose to be ‘super sleuths’ can spend some time studying the
Your Mystery Party site prior to the party. If you are using an expansion pack, you’ll need to go to
YourMysteryParty.com/summermurder – as this page will include the expansion pack players.
The free, downloadable invitations are located on the item page where you first purchased this game. Scroll to
the bottom of the page and click on the link that says ‘free, downloadable invitation’ to download the pdf file.
Fill in your information in the text fields and either print or save to your hard drive. You can email these invites
to your guests to save paper costs. You will need to enter your information in the text field and save one on
your hard drive for each player, changing the character to be played on each invitation. Alternatively, either
email this link or use any eVite site and simply include the link to the Your Mystery Party guest invite site at

spoilers on this page for your guests.
This optional pre-game round is to be implemented approximately one week before the party. Please note that
this round is designed to generate pre-game excitement and is not necessary to solve the mystery. The ways
to deliver these starters are as follows:

WITH THE
PURCHASED GAME
ROUND ONE - IT’S PARTY TIME!
DÉCOR: Create a Luau ambiance with a Jimmy Buffet mix, reggae mix or a steel drum band mix CD playing
softly, Luau décor and any movie (on mute) about the beach / Hawaii (i.e. Lilo & Stitch, Gidget Goes Hawaiian,
Point break, Blue Crush, etc.) if there is a television in the party room / patio. Also, take a look at our Pinterest
Page (MyMysteryParty) for some DIY options.
Cocktails for adults (i.e. Mai Tais, Pina Coladas served in pineapple or coconut shells, etc.) and appetizers can
be served and a round one envelope should be handed to each guest. For teens, serve fruit punch with a
pineapple garnish or Hawaiian Punch inside of a carved pineapple with fun umbrellas and colorful straws.

GAME PLAY: When you are ready to start the game, a round one envelope should be handed to each guest.
This round is designed for the characters to be acquainted with each other, and the plot will start to unfold as
the characters discuss the information in their clue cards. Motives will be unveiled and some characters will be
instructed to perform certain actions throughout the game. Make sure not to rush this round, as it is actually
the most important round. First time hosts tend to rush, so don’t rush your guests this round! It will take time
for each guest to make their rounds to speak to everyone and discuss things that they are instructed to discuss
as per their clue cards.
PROP LIST: These are props needed for this round. Collect these items in advance and have them ready.
If any of the optional games are played, you will need to collect the items needed in advance of the game.
Round One Clue cards printed and slipped into envelopes that are labeled for each character playing the
game.
ROUND TWO – DINNER HOUR
PRE-GAME SET UP: In the nearest bathroom, place the following items under the sink - the victim sign,
Scotch tape (host supplied), white non-toxic face makeup (optional and host supplied but funny and
suggested), and also include the victim t-shirt and / or crime scene tape if you have purchased these items
from our prop store (again, optional but funny and suggested). If there is not a cabinet under the sink, place
these items in any location that can be concealed within that bathroom. The victim will be instructed in their
clue card for round two to look for it if there is not a cabinet under the sink. The victim will be instructed in their
round two clue card – to become the victim after the pre-murder clues have been implemented (after ~ 1520 minutes) to go to the nearest restroom to become the victim by applying the white face makeup on their
face (optional), using Scotch tape to adhere the victim sign to their chest and if the optional victim t-shirt is
available - to put that on (with the victim sign on top) and if the optional authentic crime scene barrier tape is
there - to decorate themselves with it. It is hilarious when the guests see the fully decorated victim!
If, for any reason, you are unable to hide the victim’s items in the restroom – simply look who the
victim is by looking at the round two cards of the required players. You’ll need to tell the victim when
it is time (at the start of round two) and let them know where you’ve hidden their items.
PRE-ROUND TWO: You can serve dinner (dinner is optional). You can simply take a break and eat dinner but
tell your guests to remain in character! They are allowed to mingle / talk about things during this time, but
since they will likely be only sitting with a subsection of the group, it will be limiting – and that is all right – you’ll
Copyright © mymysteryparty.com
Page 9
give time for everybody to mingle once the official round begins. You can pass out their clue cards before/after
dinner – it won’t make a difference.
PRE-MURDER ROUND TWO: PASS OUT THE ROUND TWO CLUE CARDS: Pass out the envelopes for
round two to the guests and encourage them over the next 15 or so minutes to mingle while implementing their
'pre-murder' reveal clues for round two. Since you are likely to be playing a character role, do not forget to
implement your own 'pre-murder' clues and mingle with your guests before you allow the round to advance.
If you are playing a character – which is highly suggested that you do – don’t forget to implement your own 'premurder' clues and mingle with your guests before you advance the round.

WITH THE
PURCHASED GAME
THE INVESTIGATION BEGINS: As stated above, once the victim is ‘discovered’ and the laughter dies down,
read the sign on his/her chest to the group and have them go back to the party room. Encourage the guests to
implement their 'post-murder reveal clues' and share truthful information and opinions that they have regarding
the murder. Most would have already viewed their post murder clues, and that is great. Super sleuths will be
ready for the investigation and the energy will remain high. This part of the investigation should take about 15
minutes, but don’t rush as it is important. The post-murder clues are simply in the story line. There will be
references to ‘where’ the players were when the murder happened. In no way were these players supposed to
stage themselves in the proper place during the pre-murder phase of this round – this is just story land.
FORENSIC ANALYSIS: Put the forensic analysis results in an envelope. Reveal it towards the end of

CONCLUSION OF THE ROUND: At the conclusion of this round, give the guests a time period (i.e. 5-10
minutes) in which to fill in their final guesses as to whodunit on the ‘Murder Mystery Investigation Sheet’.
Collect the guess sheets from your guests at the conclusion of this round.
You collect the investigation sheets so the guests are not tempted to change their original guesses of
whodunit once they hear what others have to say during the accusation round. If you trust your guests won’t
change their answers &/or there is no pride or end of the game prizes on the line – there’s no need to collect
the murder mystery investigation sheets from your guests. If you want to narrow it down to ‘one winner,’ simply
give the winning title to the person who turns in the first correct guess of whodunit. It would be best not to let
the guests know you are doing this, or you’ll have a bunch of rushed guesses and the guests will skip much
needed sleuthing.

ROUND THREE – solution round
OPTIONAL ACCUSATIONS: after you collect the mystery investigation sheets, allow the guests to one-byone accuse who they believe the murderer is and how they did it. Instruct them to also tell the group their
guess of the murderer’s motive. If you are having an awards ceremony using the awards certificates available
on the My Mystery Party site in the mystery props section, you can use this round as the final decision maker
on the best actor/actress award.
FINAL SOLUTIONS: After the accusation round, pass out the round three envelopes to your guests and have
them sit in a circle or semi-circle in order to be able to see guests as they read their solution cards one at a
time to the group. If you are in a large ballroom / patio with a microphone and stage/podium – have each guest
with a solution card come to the front of the space and use the microphone to reveal their solution (you can
also do it this way for the accusation round if you so choose). At this time, you can serve the optional dessert
and coffee (or hot cocoa/ hot apple cider/ after dinner cocktails). If this is a birthday party – bring out the cake!
Instruct the guests to stand up in front of the group and read (act out) their final solution round card one at a
time in the exact order that is directed by the solution round cards. *If you are in a time crunch, have only the
required players (#1 - #8) read their solution cards to the group, but you will need to ensure they go in the
order instructed on their Round Three solution cards. If you have all of the expansion packs, we do not
suggest that you have all of your players read their solutions in front of the group. Rather, allow the required
&/or all main game players to read their solutions, and then give the guests a short amount of time after the
murderer confesses to mingle about and discuss their individual solutions with each other. Interaction will keep
them entertained, but sitting too long watching people recite solutions of ‘not’ being the murderer will drag on
and the excitement will wear off – by the time your murderer gets to confess, people might become
disinterested if they sit too long. Don’t let this happen!

HELPFUL HINTS ON HOW TO PLAY A MYSTERY PARTY
GUEST INSTRUCTIONS
You’ve been assigned a character and you’ve come to the party dressed in the most
awesome luau costume and have been told to play your role. Now what?
The mystery is separated into three main rounds of party play. During the party, you will
receive an envelope that contains the clues necessary for your character for the round. The
clues for the characters at the party provide everything that you need to solve the mystery.
However, during the investigation segment of the game, you will need to ask the right
questions and pay close attention to everyone’s clues to get the whole picture of what has
happened.
FULL INSTRUCTIONS
WITH THE
PURCHASED GAME
From this point forward, you are to remain in character until the mystery is solved. If you are
playing a ‘quirky tourist,’ then that is who you are until the end! Undoubtedly, your host cast
you into a character that you are comfortable playing. Some characters are designed to be
played more reserved than other characters. Feel free to play your role in any manner that
you feel comfortable. Embellish your character’s personality if you would like. However, if
you are feeling more reserved tonight, you can opt to allow the other guests to approach you
or you can simply listen in on others’ conversations to get your information.

OPTIONAL PRE-GAME TASKS - The following tasks are completely optional and
exclusion of them does not alter the mystery in any way. However, it does lead to pre-game build up and
excitement! Cut the task strips out and slip them into envelopes and send about 1 week prior to the party. Be
sure to fill in your guests’ preferred contact information on the task slips so they will be able to contact each
other. The usual method of contact is via email.

For some pre-party fun, you can contact (email, phone, etc.) the
following guests in the week leading up to the party:
Contact the guest playing Character Z that you heard s/he is on the guest list for Darby’s luau, but you would
appreciate it if s/he didn’t go to the party so you can enjoy yourself.
(Contact info :__________________________________________________________________________)
Contact the guest playing Character G and say that you are excited that s/he will be in town for Darby’s luau
party. You haven’t seen him/her since s/he hit it big on the pop charts!
(Contact info :___________________________________________________________________________)
Contact the guest playing Character T and say that you have been assigned by your boss at CBC TV to do a
story on the quality of meat at the Sun City Butcher Shop. You hope that s/he doesn’t take offense to what you
have to say about the meat.
(Contact info :___________________________________________________________________________)
Please note: either contacting the guests above or deciding to skip these tasks will not alter the
mystery or anyone's ability to solve the mystery in anyway. However, contacting other guests will lead
to excitement about the party and will encourage other guests to read about the other characters and
be prepared for some completely mysterious fun!
All players have a pregame task card.

Character l ROUND ONE
CLUES TO REVEAL DURING THIS ROUND
During this round, mingle with other guests to discuss the following information:
Talk to Character Z about what it is like to live next door to someone like Character M. You heard a rumor
that they are feuding over stupid stuff almost every day. You wouldn’t be able to live like that – it would
drive you insane.
Talk to Character W about how s/he wants to be a comic, but won’t give up professional poker playing.
Ask Character J why s/he is always being talked about in the trash tabloids. Doesn’t s/he have enough
money to pay the reporters not to talk about him/her?
Tell a few people that you heard that Character J’s family was affiliated with the mob in some way. Ask
around to see if anybody else has heard this, but don’t let Character J know you’re talking about it.
PERSONAL CLUES TO CONCEAL
You can’t stand Character T. When you first started out as a performer, you performed at the Sun City
Galleria to a rather small crowd in the middle of the mall. Character T heckled you the entire time and
nearly made you lose your confidence as a performer. You wanted to quit and never perform again, but
you ended up picking yourself back up and you became uber-famous as you are today. You have hit
songs that have soared to #1 on the music charts and you couldn’t be happier.
All players have a R1
task card.

ROUND TWO CLUES– cut out, slip into envelopes and label with the character and round. 
CHARACTER S - ROUND TWO
PRE MURDER CLUES TO REVEAL & TASKS TO PERFORM:
Admit to a few people that you actually got a raise when Character A sued the amusement park. The new
owner used this incident to convince her/his parents to tear down the park and build a shopping mall –
which was what his/her plans were all along. Then, the owner hired you as the manager of the new
shopping mall that is going to be the biggest shopping center in the nation. You are very excited about this
opportunity.
Tell Character D that you watch his/her midday newscast every day. You think s/he is a talented reporter
and belongs in the evening newscast during primetime. However, s/he needs to really get out and network
with the people in the community if s/he wants to get the good stories and connections. You heard s/he is
somewhat of a recluse and that will need to change if s/he ever wants to be promoted.
Ask Character A how the plans for the shopping mall are going. You are so excited about being able to
manage his/her new mega-shopping complex. You won’t let him/her down – you’ll do an excellent job.
POST MURDER:
 If someone never left the party, they are not a likely suspect.
 It is apparent the victim was poisoned. This poison was quick acting and very strong.
 You did leave the party area once you arrived. You went to the restroom and came right back to the party.
 You may have touched things on the buffet tables – you are a very hands-on type of person.
 You remember seeing many people moving and taking away trays throughout the party.
All players have a R2
task card.

Example Time Line
The game can be shortened by excluding the optional activities, or lengthened by adding
more bonus games.
7:00 PM: Guests arrive, have their pictures made (optional) and receive a refreshment / cocktail for adults.
The guests will view the guest instructions and character list while they wait for everybody to arrive.
The host should build in at least a 10 minute cushion for guests to arrive late. Hey, it happens.
7:10 PM: The host reads the guest instructions to the group.
It is optional to have each guest introduce
their character in front of the group. Play the video game trailer on Your Mystery Party for your
game &/or read the game synopsis from Your Mystery Party to the group to give the premise.
7:20 PM: The Round One envelopes are handed out and the game begins.
The guests mingle and
reveal the clues on their clue cards. It’s just like a normal party, but the guests remain in character
and gossip about each other’s characters. The motives & story lines will start to unveil.
7:50 PM: An optional bonus game is played.
Bonus activities keep the energy flowing and the guests
have a blast. They are optional, but highly suggested. The players must remain in character.
8:05 PM: Optional to serve dinner.
Dinner can be sit down or buffet – or even as simple as a
pizza that’s delivered! You can also just serve appetizers/snacks during the party.
8:35 PM: The Round Two envelopes are handed out to the guests and pre-murder clues are discussed.
8:55 PM: The victim becomes the victim and the host passes out the investigation sheets to the players.
The guests interrogate each other to determine whodunit. The full story is in the player clue cards,
but the guests will have to be skilled at asking the right questions of each other, etc.
9:10 PM: The forensic analysis report is revealed and within ~5-10 minutes, everybody submits their
formal guess of whodunit.
9:20 PM: Optional accusation round – the guests can take turns formally accusing who they think did it,
and why. You’ll be surprised at how everybody’s inner actor will surface during this activity.
9:30 PM: Dessert and coffee (optional) are served and the Round Three envelopes are handed out to
the guests. The guests sit in a circle and one-by-one, the solutions are revealed by each of the
guests and the murderer will confess at the conclusion of the round. The murderer is notified in
their round three solution card that they are the murderer. They will not know or have any
advantage over anybody of knowing whodunit before this round. After the murderer confesses,
there ifs
9:50 PM: An optional bonus game is played.
10:10 PM: An optional award ceremony.
My Mystery Party has award certificates of all kinds that you can
choose from in the Prop Emporium. The host can determine who receives the awards while the
bonus game is being played. Some awards are traditional and some are snarky but hilarious!
10:30 PM: Game over!
