The Oceanside Palace Hotel of Maui was hosting their nightly luau on Sunset Beach. Exciting Polynesian spirit filled the air as the guests were greeted and presented with festive Hawaiian leis. Everybody mingled while enjoying delicious appetizers. The hosts kicked off the celebration with awesome challenges such as ‘What Summer Thing am I,’ P.G.A. (Poolside Golf Association) Tournament, Super Saturated Sweatshirt Relay and Ping Pong Madness. During the games, it became apparent that some of the guests didn’t get along too well and that some were hiding pretty big secrets. The hotel staff got the party back on track with a delicious Hawaiian dinner while the guests worked in teams on the Totally Sunny Movie Challenge. With stuffed bellies, the luau participants mingled and to everyone’s horror, a dead body was discovered! There was a killer among them that needed to be caught immediately before they got away! The guests rallied together and underwent a thorough investigation including a fiber analysis provided by the local police department. Only taking short breaks to relieve the stress of the investigation, they engaged in exciting games such as Top Chef Poolside Guacamole, Shove a Duck, Treacherous Sharks and Swashbucklin' Pirates and the Tourist Vs. Natives Relay. Once everyone had their final guess of whodunit, they took turns accusing each other. Everyone came clean with their involvement in the crime, if they even had any. Everyone was shocked when the murderer – seeing no other alternative – confessed! After a brave escape attempt by the killer, the party guests enjoyed a delectable dessert and reflected on the evening’s exciting events! It was definitely a luau that the guests will remember forever! She’s an obnoxious one-upper who’s not the most popular employee among the staff of the hotel! Extended chats with this feisty entertainer are definitely worth avoiding - if you know what is good for you. Robbie Peters is a Hollywood hunk who is currently vacationing - in total disguise - for a month in Hawaii with his co-star Kirstin Withers. They’re relaxing in between films - hidden far from the paparazzi. But Robbie’s narcissism and arrogant attitude are a little much for the laid back staff of the Oceanside Palace Hotel. Robbie is traveling under the alias ‘Harry Spotter.’ Kirstin Withers is known as one of Hollywood’s nicest young stars. At least that’s the side of Kirstin that Hollywood’s seen! On a more personal level, away from the glitz and glam, this spoiled diva lets it loose with angry tirades if she doesn’t get her way. She’s currently in disguise as an average Jane and she doesn’t like it much, as she doesn’t get the attention she does as a movie star. Kirstin is traveling under the alias ‘Paula Jaxson.’ Tiki Hutman was born in Southern California but moved to Maui when he was only eight years old. He grew up on the Maui beaches and is the head lifeguard at the Oceanside Palace Hotel’s Sunset Beach. Tiki is known for his innovative dance moves and outgoing personality. He’s the one to get a party started – but hopefully, not while on duty! The locals are starting to worry that Tiki might be losing his edge as a lifeguard. Lovey Powell is the billionaire heiress that spends her pampered life vacationing in exotic locations. One of her many mansions around the world is located on the beautiful island of Maui and she refers to it as home base. Lovey often stays at the resorts on the beach to flaunt her money. She considers everyone to be subservient to her. Bossy is her middle name! COSTUME SUGGESTIONS Hawaiian top and grass skirt. Long, black wig is an optional prop. Leis & flowers in your hair are optional. Casual yet trendy beach attire. Sunglasses as an optional prop. Casual yet trendy beach attire. Sunglasses as an optional prop. Originally hailing from the bayous of Southern Louisiana, Jack is currently traveling the world in search of the best deep sea fishing. He recently had to take a job hosting deep sea fishing excursions, as he ran out of cash during his month-long scheduled vacation and couldn’t make it home to the mainland. Jack is famous for his pirate impersonations and prefers to be called Captain Jack Marrow. Coco Beaches is the seemingly naive college student from the University of Northern Texas. She won her trip to Hawaii as part of a Hawaiian trivia challenge on a local radio station. Coco appears to be void of all common sense but claims to have earned a 4.0 GPA thus far in her pursuit of a biochemistry degree. No matter what her academic status truly is – she’s all about having fun. Ano Haloa is the nosy waiter at the Oceanside Palace Hotel. He might not seem like he is paying attention to the conversation at your table, but quite the contrary! This meddlesome maître d' keeps a journal and knows every detail about every guest at the hotel! Be careful what you say around Ano, as rumor has it that he’s just waiting for the day he hears a bit of gossip he can do something with! Holi Mulokeli is the overly-excited greeter and lei presenter at the Oceanside Palace Hotel. The native Hawaiians know to avoid her, but the tourists… well, they better be ready for a surprise when they arrive to the hotel! Holi bursts with energy and hospitality and takes her job very seriously. Her enthusiasm has been known to make children cry and animals flee the scene! Holi is the sister of the hotel’s main hula dancer, Poni Mulokeli. Sol Boatman recently won a lawsuit against a large fast food chain for burning his lip on an overly-heated hamburger. He’s using his winnings to set out on a tour of the world – starting with Maui! Sol is a recently retired donut artist and is definitely enjoying the break from the sugary confections. Sol is typically seen with a bunch of friends wherever he goes. Sol Boatman recently won a lawsuit against a large fast food chain for burning his lip on an overly-heated hamburger. Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 4 HOST DIRECTIVES Get ready for an awesome fun n’ the sun party with your purchase of the Murder in Maui…a Luau to die for game from mymysteryparty.com! This party is an entertaining and comical mystery where the players act the roles of hilarious personalities while sleuthing the intriguing story line. This is an excellent choice for your next get together during the sunshine’y season! The party pack (this document) needs to be printed in advance of the party. Cut out the clues and slip them into envelopes labeled with the appropriate round and character for each round of the party. It is optimal to choose different colored envelopes for each round. There are envelope packs for sale on the My Mystery Party website in the Party Props section (aka: Prop Emporium). For a complete surprise, you can elect to upgrade this download to the pre-printed ‘party ready’ party pack option from the mymysteryparty.com site. The upgrade is located in our side navigation bar and says ‘upgrade your download to a boxed set.’ This option will include the clues in labeled envelopes and the rest of prepared game documents –‘ready to go’ (this is an additional charge since we utilize our paper, ink, envelopes, labor, etc.). This upgrade removes the original price of the download and charges you the difference between the party ready pack and download version of the game. We also offer mystery props on the My Mystery Party site in the Prop Emporium including authentic crime scene barrier tape, crime scene balloons, mystery investigation pens, white face makeup for the victim, victim t-shirts, etc. These are all optional but are fun enhancements to your night/day of mystery. During the party, your job as the host is to ensure that the envelopes are given to the guests at the appropriate times and most of all – that you and your guest are having a blast! Make sure to read the host instructions for each round prior to the party to ensure that you have everything in place for the big day! Please note - the host instructions for each round do not disclose who the murderer is, but do not read the Round Three clue cards if you want to keep the murderer a surprise. (The victim is disclosed in the Round Two clue cards.) This mystery comes with 10+ characters. There are 4+ optional characters in this mystery. If you do not have guests for these 4+ optional characters, simply omit the clue cards of these guests. If you need to have unique characters added beyond the available expansion packs, please purchase custom characters from the My Mystery Party site under the Need More Murder Mystery Characters section. Please allow us a maximum of up to 7 business days to complete your request (however, during the busy times of the year, this might be extended depending upon demand). Depending on the author queue, we might be able to do them quicker for you but if you are in a hurry - please check with us first before you purchase . Full instructions are in the purchased game The game is organized into four rounds and is structured as follows: OPTIONAL PRE-GAME TASKS: these optional pre-game task sheets are to be delivered to each guest before the party or give them to the guests as they arrive. All pre-game materials are optional and do not alter the mystery and are intended to enhance the pre-game build up for the event. These tasks are not vital to solving the mystery and omission of them does not alter the mystery in any way. APPETIZER (COCKTAILS 4 ADULTS) HOUR / ROUND ONE: Deliver these clues as your guests arrive. DINNER HOUR / ROUND TWO: Deliver these clues while you serve dinner (optional) to your guests. DESSERT, AND THE BIG REVEAL/ SOLUTION ROUND THREE: Deliver these clues with coffee/hot cocoa and dessert (again, it’s optional to serve dessert) Note: you do NOT have to serve dinner/dessert, this is only suggested and the instructions tell you ‘when’ to serve it and what to do around the time you serve it. You can simply skip both without a problem and just serve Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 5 snacks/appetizers the entire time. However, please don’t have a party without offering some type of food – even if it’s just snacks. This way, before the party, they can get familiar with the other characters that will be at the party, watch the game trailer, and more! There are also hidden/subtle hints about characters throughout the page so those guests who choose to be ‘super sleuths’ can spend some time studying the Your Mystery Party site prior to the party. If you are using an expansion pack, you’ll need to go to YourMysteryParty.com/luaumurder – as this page will include the expansion pack players. The free, downloadable invitations are located on the item page where you first purchased this game. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the link that says ‘free, downloadable invitation’ to download the pdf file. Fill in your information in the text fields and either print or save to your hard drive. You can email these invites to your guests to save paper costs. You will need to enter your information in the text field and save one on your hard drive for each player, changing the character to be played on each invitation. Alternatively, either email this link or use any eVite site and simply include the link to the Your Mystery Party guest invite site at http://YourMysteryParty.com/luau (or other page if you are using the expansion pack). There are no spoilers on this page for your guests. Full instructions are in the purchased game Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 6 ROUND ONE - IT’S PARTY TIME! DÉCOR: Create a Luau ambiance with a Jimmy Buffet mix, reggae mix or a steel drum band mix CD playing softly, Luau décor and any movie (on mute) about the beach / Hawaii (i.e. Lilo & Stitch, Gidget Goes Hawaiian, Point break, Blue Crush, etc.) if there is a television in the party room. Also, take a look at our Pinterest Page (MyMysteryParty) for some DIY options. Cocktails for adults (i.e. Mai Tais, Pina Coladas served in pineapple or coconut shells, etc.) and appetizers can be served and a round one envelope should be handed to each guest. For teens, serve fruit punch with a pineapple garnish or Hawaiian Punch inside of a carved pineapple with fun umbrellas and colorful straws. Full instructions are in the purchased game OPTIONAL BUT FUN: At the conclusion of this round, play any of the bonus games (see the bonus activity instructions). PROP LIST: These are props needed for this round. Collect these items in advance and have them ready. If any of the optional games are played, you will need to collect the items needed in advance of the game. Round One Clue cards printed and slipped into envelopes that are labeled for each character playing the game. ROUND TWO – DINNER HOUR PRE-GAME SET UP: In the nearest bathroom, place the following items under the sink - the victim sign, Scotch tape (host supplied), white non-toxic face makeup (optional and host supplied but funny and suggested), and also include the victim t-shirt and / or crime scene tape if you have purchased these items from our prop store (again, optional but funny and suggested). If there is not a cabinet under the sink, place these items in any location that can be concealed within that bathroom. The victim will be instructed in their clue card for round two to look for it if there is not a cabinet under the sink. The victim will be instructed in their round two clue card – to become the victim after the pre-murder clues have been implemented (after ~ 1520 minutes) to go to the nearest restroom to become the victim by applying the white face makeup on their face (optional), using Scotch tape to adhere the victim sign to their chest and if the optional victim t-shirt is available - to put that on (with the victim sign on top) and if the optional authentic crime scene barrier tape is there - to decorate themselves with it. It is hilarious when the guests see the fully decorated victim! Full instructions are in the purchased game THE INVESTIGATION BEGINS: As stated above, once the victim is ‘discovered’ and the laughter dies down, read the sign on his/her chest to the group and have them go back to the party room. Encourage the guests to implement their 'post-murder reveal clues' and share truthful information and opinions that they have regarding the murder. Most would have already viewed their post murder clues, and that is great. Super sleuths will be Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 7 ready for the investigation and the energy will remain high. This part of the investigation should take about 15 minutes, but don’t rush as it is important. Full instructions are in the purchased game CONCLUSION OF THE ROUND: At the conclusion of this round, give the guests a time period (i.e. 5-10 minutes) in which to fill in their final guesses as to whodunit on the ‘Murder Mystery Investigation Sheet’. Collect the guess sheets from your guests at the conclusion of this round. You collect the investigation sheets so the guests are not tempted to change their original guesses of whodunit once they hear what others have to say during the accusation round. If you trust your guests won’t change their answers &/or there is no pride or end of the game prizes on the line – there’s no need to collect the murder mystery investigation sheets from your guests. If you want to narrow it down to ‘one winner,’ simply give the winning title to the person who turns in the first correct guess of whodunit. It would be best not to let the guests know you are doing this, or you’ll have a bunch of rushed guesses and the guests will skip much needed sleuthing. PROP LIST: These are props needed for this round. Collect these items in advance and have them ready! Clue cards for Round Two in labeled envelopes. The fiber analysis report in an envelope The victim sign for the victim’s clue in Round Two Murder weapon cut out The Mystery Investigation Sheets Writing utensil for each guest (host supplied) Scotch Tape (host supplied, to adhere the victim sign and the murder weapon to the victim). Non-toxic white face makeup for the victim (the victim’s clue will describe what to do with it; optional, host supplied and available at the My Mystery Party Prop Emporium). Victim t-shirt (optional, host supplied and available at the My Mystery Party Prop Emporium) and crime scene tape to decorate the victim (optional, host supplied and available at the My Mystery Party Prop Emporium) Any of the optional bonus game activity props (see bonus game instructions). ROUND THREE– solution round ACCUSATIONS: after you collect the mystery investigation sheets, allow the guests to one-by-one accuse who they believe the murderer is and how they did it. Instruct them to also tell the group their guess of the murderer’s motive. If you are having an awards ceremony using the awards certificates available on the My Mystery Party site in the mystery props section, you can use this round as the final decision maker on the best actor/actress award. Full instructions are in the purchased game Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 8 HELPFUL HINTS ON HOW TO PLAY A MYSTERY PARTY GUEST INSTRUCTIONS You’ve been assigned a character and you’ve come to the party dressed in the most awesome luau costume and have been told to play your role. Now what? The mystery is separated into three main rounds of party play. During the party, you will receive an envelope that contains the clues necessary for your character for the round. The clues for the characters at the party provide everything that you need to solve the mystery. However, during the investigation segment of the game, you will need to ask the right questions and pay close attention to everyone’s clues to get the whole picture of what has happened. Full instructions are in the purchased game From this point forward, you are to remain in character until the mystery is solved. If you are playing a ‘quirky tourist,’ then that is who you are until the end! Undoubtedly, your host cast you into a character that you are comfortable playing. Some characters are designed to be played more reserved than other characters. Feel free to play your role in any manner that you feel comfortable. Embellish your character’s personality if you would like. However, if you are feeling more reserved tonight, you can opt to allow the other guests to approach you or you can simply listen in on others’ conversations to get your information. Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 9 OPTIONAL PRE-GAME TASKS - The following tasks are completely optional and exclusion of them does not alter the mystery in any way. However, it does lead to pre-game build up and excitement! Cut the task strips out and slip them into envelopes and send about 1 week prior to the party. Be sure to fill in your guests’ preferred contact information on the task slips so they will be able to contact each other. The usual method of contact is via email. The expandable team playing with Sol will be included in this round through Sol – they are not to receive pre-game starter cards. You will enter their contact information on Sol’s card. character l For some pre-party fun, you can contact (email, phone, etc.) the following guests in the week leading up to the party: Contact the guest playing Tiki Hutman and tell him that you are absolutely furious that two of your money bags disappeared yesterday. Tiki is supposed to watch over the beach and that includes the cabanas that people pay a lot of money to rent! Someone stole your money, and Tiki should be held responsible! (Contact info :__________________________________________________________________________) Each player will have a pregame task card in the purchased game. Names were removed to prevent spoilers Please note: either contacting the guests above or deciding to skip these tasks will not alter the Contact the guest playing Jack Marrow and tell him that you know he is the one who stole two of your money bags from your cabana on the beach yesterday. He rented the cabana next to yours and while you fell asleep – he swiped the money! You’ll do whatever you can to prove he is a thief! (Contact info :__________________________________________________________________________) mystery or anyone's ability to solve the mystery in anyway. However, contacting other guests will lead to excitement about the party and will encourage other guests to read about the other characters and be prepared for some completely mysterious fun! Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 10 ROUND ONE CLUES– cut out, slip into envelopes and label with the character and round. character t ROUND ONE CLUES TO REVEAL DURING THIS ROUND During this round, mingle with other guests to discuss the following information: Talk to Poni Mulokeli about how Jack Marrow promised you that if you paid the fee for a deep sea fishing excursion trip that costs $200.00, he would catch a few big game fish, sell them, and split the money with you. He supposedly went on this trip and then said he had hard luck and didn’t catch anything. However, if he is a professional fisherman that works for a tour company hosting deep sea excursions here in Maui, shouldn’t he have caught something? You feel foolish and feel like he conned you out of money! Talk to Lovey Powell about how she became wealthy. Did she earn it herself, or did she inherit it? Ask Robbie Peters (refer to him as Harry Spotter, as he is in disguise as an amateur tennis player) what he does for a living. Say that he looks vaguely familiar. You feel like you’ve seen his face somewhere? PERSONAL CLUES TO CONCEAL You were completely humiliated by Character S. You met him the other night at the Lime & Coconut Dance Club and he made a deal with you, but you feel like he tricked you out of your money. You don’t think he had any intention of catching those fish and splitting the money with you. You doubt he even went on the trip. You think he pocketed your money. Now, you don’t have enough money to make it for the rest of your trip, as you are a college student on a very tight budget. You’re a seemingly naïve college student from the University of Northern Texas. You won this trip by participating in a Hawaiian trivia contest on a local radio station. You don’t have a lot of common sense but make up for it in book smarts as you’ve got a 4.0 GPA and you’re a biochemistry major. Each player will have a round one card in the purchased game. Names were removed to prevent spoilers During the mystery, your character must be honest. Don’t make up any potentially mystery-altering clues. You do not, however, have to share the clues that you collect with other guests. ROUND TWO CLUES– cut out, slip into envelopes and label with the character and round. CHARACTER S -ROUND TWO PRE MURDER CLUES TO REVEAL & TASKS TO PERFORM: Character P hasn’t tipped you all night. Tell everyone that he is a con artist and shouldn’t be trusted – and, the man has never left you a tip so he needs to just die. Tell Kirstin and Robbie that the Hollywood paparazzi ‘are a comin’.’ Tell Character G that the upper management of the hotel is looking for a way to fire her – just FYI. Ask Character L why she is estranged with her famous niece. She’ll have plenty of opportunities to explain her side to the Hollywood paparazzi when they arrive at the hotel…very soon! You called them about 8 hours ago and they should arrive soon. POST MURDER: You probably did touch the murder weapon or a few just like it as you helped set up the luau this evening. It’s your job; it can’t be avoided, unfortunately. You saw the victim leave the luau area about 5-6 minutes prior to the time the body was discovered by Lovey Powell. If Lovey Powell is not an honest person, why should you believe that she simply ‘discovered’ the body? How do you know she is not the murderer? Robbie and Kirstin left the luau at the same time earlier. Kirstin returned first and Robbie was definitely gone for about 3-4 minutes total. Each player will have a round two card in the purchased game. Names were removed to prevent spoilers Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 11 THE VICTIM SIGN FOR ROUND TWO IS ON THE NEXT PAGE. You’ll be surprised at how everybody’s inner actor will surface during this activity. 9:30 PM: Dessert and coffee (optional) are served and the Round Three envelopes are handed out to the guests. The guests sit in a circle and one-by-one, the solutions are revealed by each of the guests and the murderer will confess at the conclusion of the round. The murderer is notified in their round three solution card that they are the murderer. They will not know or have any advantage over anybody of knowing whodunit before this round. 9:50 PM: An optional bonus game is played. 10:10 PM: An optional award ceremony. My Mystery Party has award certificates of all kinds that you can choose from in the Prop Emporium. The host can determine who receives the awards while the bonus game is being played. Some awards are traditional and some are snarky but hilarious! 10:30 PM: Game over!
