Use of Advanced Energy and Daylight Modeling to deliver information on design applications to reduce energy consumption while enhancing occupant comfort. Natural Daylight
Comfort
§ Design buildings for thermal comfort including natural ventilation § Passive and active conditioning Ventilation
opportunities § Displacement ventilation system
Energy
NATURAL DAYLIGHT
Natural Daylight
Clerestories in the second story classrooms, skylights in the hallway and above the floor openings to improve natural daylight in the building !
Informed design for the depth of the roof overhangs on the east, west and south windows !
Introduction of glazing between classrooms and corridors to allow natural light to penetrate the building core as well as the interior classrooms. !
Occupancy Sensors and automated dimming
COMFORT
Comfort Range
!
Considerations: §Yearly month-‐to-‐month temperature change §Hourly temperature change §Lighting month-‐to-‐month change §Wind velocity analysis §Sun shading vs. temperature §Ground temperature §Natural ventilation
Comfort Range Summary
!
!
!
!
Conditions are appropriate for natural ventilation during school year Utilize the best passive comfort strategies – sun shading, air movement and direct/indirect solar gain
VENTILATION
Passive Ventilation in All Classrooms
Operable windows, skylights with fans for ventilation assist.
Displacement Ventilation
!
In a displacement ventilation system, conditioned air is supplied directly to the occupied space with low momentum. Heat sources in the space (e.g. people, equipment, etc.) create upward convective flow in the form of thermal plumes. These plumes carry heat and pollutants to a high level away from the occupants and exhaust from building.
Displacement Ventilation
Traditional mixing Ventilation
ENERGY
Energy Benchmarks
Considerations: § Study by SDG&E shows average school uses 30kBtu/sf/yr, largest use is lighting (30% of total) § Energy Star target for an elementary school for this zip code is 31 KBTU/sf/
yr § Energy cost per square foot ranges from $1.26 to $2.08 § Solar Panels to off-‐site approximately 60% usage DESIGN

What is 21st Century Learning?
“We are currently preparing students for jobs that don’t
yet exist...using technologies that haven’t yet been
invented...in order to solve problems we don’t even
know are problems yet.” --Richard Riley, Secretary of Education under Clinton
The top 10 jobs for 2010 weren’t even created in 2004”
Diana G. Oblinger, President Educause
A generation ago, these fields did not exist. A student
could not declare a single one of them his/her major.

What will the world be like 20 years from now
when your child has left school and is out in the
“real world”? • What skills will your child need to be successful in
this world you have imagined 20 years from now?
• Talk with the people around you and discuss what
traits we should foster in our students.
