MAIN LINE SCHOOL NIGHT
Dear Friends of
MLSN,
Table of Contents
COURSES
It’s 19 degrees today
and the lovely grounds
of Harford Park are
covered in snow. But
writing this note for
MLSN’s spring catalog
reminds me that sun brightened days and
bursts of blooming daffodils are just around the
corner, and it won’t be long until all around us is
new once again.
Featured Courses
New ideas are emerging at MLSN too. Recently
introduced topical luncheon and happy hour
discussions offer lively and intelligent conversation, and “Make it a Night,” events on film and
theater will entertain and engage. And we’re
delighted to expand MLSN’s Forum events,
which at one time featured Winston Churchill –
not once, but twice! Forum 2015 speakers will
focus on topics ranging from cutting edge brain
research to clandestine CIA escape missions to
the making of the movie “Elf” -- how’s that for
subject span?

incorporate the natural world as part of the
artwork. Compare works that are huge,
requiring large sites and significant funding,
with others that are intimate, small-scale, and/
or ephemeral. Discuss the role, purpose, and
interaction of “public” art in society.

SF12002
Writer, Producer, Director of Film and

SF12001
In conversation with Marc Lapadula,
Senior Lecturer, Yale University; Playwright,
Screenwriter, Producer
Who could produce the blockbuster “ELF,” starring
Will Ferrell, and write the acclaimed novel,
“Famine,” that was translated into French, Italian
and German? A Renaissance man originally from
Radnor, that’s who!
Mr. Komarnicki is the president and founder of the
production/management company Guy Walks
Into A Bar. Todd and “Guy Walks” partner Jon
Berg produced the Christmas classic ELF, directed
by Jon Favreau, which amassed over $220 million
worldwide, putting Guy Walks on the map as a
go-to company for high concept comedy.
Other film successes include directing the
international production, “Resistance,” starring
Julia Ormond and Bill Paxton, which Komarnicki
adapted from an Anita Shreve novel. His
screenplays include “Perfect Stranger” starring
Bruce Willis and Halle Berry, “The Christmas
Sweater,” for Sony, “Picking Cotton,” for academy
award nominated producer, David Friendly, and
most recently, “The Sully Sullenberger Story,”
(Miracle on the Hudson), for The Kennedy/
Marshall Company.
Todd has written two novels in addition to
“Famine”; “free,” published by Doubleday in 1993;
and “war,” published to exceptional reviews in
July of 2008 by Arcade.

Representative Patrick Kennedy served 16 years in the
U.S. House of Representatives, and is predominantly
known as author and lead sponsor of the
groundbreaking Mental Health Parity and Addiction
Equity Act of 2008. Now, Patrick Kennedy has built a
national coalition seeking new treatments and cures

afflicting one in every three Americans. His Kennedy
Forum on Community Mental Health continues to

President John F. Kennedy with the signing of the
Community Mental Health Act.
Rep. Kennedy is the recipient of numerous awards
and honors, including the Autism Society of America
Congressional Leadership Award, the Depression and

Tony Mendez, portrayed by Ben Affleck in
ARGO, was the driving force behind the rescue
of six American diplomats trapped in Tehran
after the U.S. Embassy was overrun and 60
other diplomats taken prisoner by Iranian
Islamic “students.” As Chief of Disguise and
Identity Transformation, Tony used all of
his considerable creative skills to fashion a
rescue scenario that was a mash-up of CIA and
Hollywood and the convergence of disguise,
deception and illusion.
Jonna Mendez is a retired CIA intelligence officer
with 27 years of service, living under cover and
serving tours of duty in Europe, South Asia
and the Far East. Her duties included training
the CIA’s most highly placed foreign assets
in the use of spy cameras and processing the
intelligence they gathered.
Jonna is a founding board member at the
International Spy Museum in Washington, D.C.
In addition to creating art at the family-owned
Pleasant Valley Studios in rural Maryland, the
Mendez’s have collaborated on the books “Spy

Tony Mendez now faces perhaps his greatest
challenge ever – he was diagnosed in October
2014 with Parkinson’s disease, which Jonna
describes as “his next operation.”

Transitions… Milestones… Family… Work…
Balance… Relationships
These are the touch points that often define
conversations among women. Mother and
daughter Emilie and Mika kick-off MLSN’s focus
on the courses and programs that tackle some
of life’s most meaningful — and challenging —
facets and phases.
In addition to her day job as co-host of “Morning
Joe,” Mika is the author of three best-selling
books. Her memoir “All Things At Once” became
a “New York Times” best seller in January 2010.
Her second book “Knowing Your Value,” which
examines the role of women in the workplace,
reached #1 on The New York Times best sellers
list for business books in spring 2011. Her
most recent book “Obsessed: America’s Food
Addiction and My Own” debuted on the bestsellers list in spring 2013.
Born in 1932 in Geneva, Switzerland, Emilie
Brzezinski immigrated to the United States
and grew up in California. Her expressive art
themes always related to nature. Eventually,
she focused entirely on monumental wood
sculpture, using a chain saw and an axe to carve
forms that breathed new life into found wood.

Films That Changed America
Iconic American Plays
While most works of cinema are produced for
mass entertainment and escapism, a peculiar
minority have had a profound impact on our
culture. Whether intentionally or not, some
movies have brought social issues to light,
changed laws, forwarded ideologies both good
and bad and altered the course of American
history through their resounding impact on
society. Enjoy deep (and often hilarious)
analysis on several selected clips from The Jazz
Singer (1927), I am a Fugitive from a Chain
Gang (1932), The Graduate (1967), Easy Rider
(1969), Jaws (1975), Annie Hall (1977) and The
China Syndrome (1979).
The most famous American plays are all
family dramas. Focus on the playwrights’
lives (talk about drama!) as well as in-depth
interpretation of four of the best-loved and
most-admired American plays, all illustrated
with film clips from four major productions:

flourishing first capital of Russia and was one
of the largest and most prosperous cities of
Europe until the Mongol genocide in the 13th

government to start up heavy coal and iron ore
industries? Go behind the headlines and learn

LITERATURE
Jane Austen: Pride and Prejudice
Jan Evans, Former English Teacher; Director,
Radnor HS Writing Center
Claudia McBride, Executive Director, MLSN
Sir Anthony Ryle, the British Philosopher, was asked if he read novels. “Oh yes,” he
replied, “I read all six of them, every year.” What
is it that makes these six Austen novels so wonderful, so timeless and so funny? We’ll look at
the most beloved of them all, Pride and Prejudice. Examining the novel closely, we’ll look
at themes, characters and style, with special
attention paid to Austen’s incisive wit. By viewing film clips taken from the many adaptations
of this novel, we’ll try to understand why this
book lends itself so well to dramatic presentations. Finally, consider the novel in the context
of the 18th century in which it was written, and
explore its relevance to the modern world.

The Long Green Tunnel by David Barol
NEW The Long Green Tunnel is an engaging,
sometimes humorous, sometimes tense,
real-life adventure about a young man who
battles mud, moose, and mosquitoes along the

dealing with the great outdoors, but about
friendships, communities and himself. The story
takes place on a hike but it no more sticks to
hiking than Huckleberry Finn stuck to boating.

Others and of Ourselves
Draw on your memory, powers of observation
and imagination to create compelling fiction.
Insightful writing assignments could become
drafts of the story in your mind. This workshop
includes discussion, guides, handouts and tips
on how to make your writing memorable.
According to Abigail Adams, “Writing a memoir
is one way to explore how you became the
person you are. It’s the story of how you got
here from there.” Read a number of short
memoirs, selected for their different themes
and writing styles. Trace your own stories,
reflecting on the events of your life and
exploring the meaning within those events.

Leaping Poetry: Reading & Writing
Workshop
Discover “leaps” in poetry and how poems are
made memorable by the poet taking “leaps”
in language. Robert Bly described this process
as making a “jump from an object soaked in
unconscious substance to an object or idea
soaked in psychic substance” and the opposite
as “a loss of associative freedom.” The poet
worth his or her weight straddles two worlds,
rendering these associations to make a poem
more exciting. Come prepared to read examples
of “leaping” poetry, listen, and read your own
work and express constructive criticism. Writing
prompts are designed to stoke creativity as well
as foster “leaping” language. This course is for
beginners and seasoned poets alike.

Contemporary Poetry Workshop:
Reading and Writing
In contemporary poetry, one finds a diverse
range of voices and styles, yet that diversity
is created by only a handful of elements: the
rhythm, the line break and the word. These
elements become the tools that shape poems
into more effective pieces to be seen and heard.
Come prepared to read, write, listen and even
watch.
