The Tatham Art Gallery Shop is a showcase for exquisitely made local craft work. The shop
stocks an extensive range of craftwork, from large embroideries to small puzzles and keyrings.

1. MARIDADI DESIGNS
Each piece in the Maridadi range has been cast, using
lead-free pewter, from an original design created by
internationally acclaimed wildlife artist Allen Hallett,
and are hand finished by a skilled and dedicated team.

4. DOWN TO EARTH
Tucked away in the beautiful Dargle valley are people
making innovative sets of leather travelling games that
vary from the traditional Zulu game of Morabaraba to
Backgammon and Chess.

2. ARDMORE CERAMICS
A small number of Ardmore pieces are on display in the
shop. These vibrant ceramics range from functional
domestic ware to sculptural art in the decorative African
tradition, and are highly sought after in Europe and
America.

5. TRADITIONAL BASKET WARE
These beautifully crafted baskets come from Hlabisa in
Northern KwaZulu-Natal where they are made with
traditional dyes and grasses. Some are patterned with
animals and huts while others have geometric designs.

3. FANCY STITCH
These exclusive hand embroidered crafts come from
Ingwavuma. No two pieces are exactly the same. They
show subtle variations where quality and originality are
acknowledged hallmarks of these works.

6. WEZANDLA
Rural farm women living in Northern KwaZulu-Natal
have been taught to work beads into their sewing in
innovative ways. They produce lovely table ware and a
variety of other craft.

7. SENZOKUHLE WIRE BASKETS
Another group from Northern KwaZulu-Natal makes
these colourful, intricately woven wire baskets in many
shapes and sizes.

10. ZULU-LULU TRADING CC
Trayci Tompkins, a well known local potter and her team
have developed a ceramic range that celebrates South
Africa’s rich and diverse culture. Meet the famous
‘Dlamini’ family of figurines, start your collection of
individually handmade raku fired clay “collectables” or
revamp your table with a range of designer “functionals”.

8. MAGWAZA POTS (IZINKHAMBA)
The Magwaza family live in the mPabalane district north
of the Tugela River. Pottery is a specialised craft in their
community: they produce work for domestic use, sale
to neighbouring communities for weddings, festivals
and rites of passage, and, more recently, to craft shops.
These beautiful pots are sought after by a growing
number collectors.

created designs for an
exclusive range of
necklaces for the Tatham
Art Gallery, which were
interpreted and made by
Eunice Cele, a skilled local
beadmaker.

9. CHURCH AGRICULTURAL PROJECT (CAP)
Many years ago in the very poorest area near Tugela
Ferry people learned to use beads and wire to make a
variety of quality products. Some of the most popular
are the exquisite “African Faberge Eggs”, and the
lampshade, copper wire and bead bowls.
