The Reverend William A. Stewart, S.J., Medal for Excellence in Teaching
(To be presented at the evening ceremony)
In 1983, the Alumni Association, in cooperation with the Faculty Union and the Students'
Representative Council, established the Reverend William A. Stewart, S.J., Medal for
Excellence in Teaching. This award is open to faculty members who have made an
extraordinary contribution to the education of Saint Mary's students through teaching in
the University's tradition of quality undergraduate education. Nominations are invited
from alumni, students, and faculty members. This medal is presented at Spring
Convocation together with a cheque for $1,500. Previous winners of this prestigious
award are:
1983 Professor David Hope (Accounting)
1984 Professor Dermot Mulrooney (Engineering)
1985 Dr. David Perrier (Sociology)
1986 Dr. John Young (Chemistry)
1987 Professor Edward McBride (Political Science)
1988 Dr. Jack Ginsburg (Chemistry)
1989 Dr. Peter March (Philosophy)
1990 Dr. Andrew Seaman (English)
1991 Dr. Phil Street (Psychology)
1992 Dr. Francis Phillips (Education)
1993 Dr. Janet Baker (English)
1994 Dr. Cyril Byrne (English)
1995 Professor Nicola Young ( Accounting)
1996 Dr. Ronald Landes (Political Science)
1997 Dr. Paul Muir (Mathematics and Computing Science)
1998 Dr. David Cone (Biology)
1999 Dr. Robert Singer (Chemistry)
2000 Dr. Eric Lee (Finance and Management Science)
2001 Dr. Janet Gregory (Finance and Management Science)
This year's winner is Dr. Gillian Thomas, Professor of English and Co-ordinator,
Womens" Studies (Undergraduate Program).
Born and raised in England, Dr. Thomas receive her Bachelor of Arts ( Honors English) and
her Master of Arts (English) from the University of Sussex. Subsequently she received
her Ph.D. from the University of London in 1972; her thesis being entitled "The Miser in
Dickens' Novels and in Nineteenth Century Urban Foklore".
She came to Saint Mary's University in 1975 as an Assistant Professor; in 1980 was
promoted to Associate Professor; and in 1986 received her full professorship. Prior to
teaching at Saint Mary's University Dr. Thomas was a part time lecturer at Dalhousie
School of Library Service; and a lecturer at California State University, Chichester College
of Further Education, and the University of Victoria.
During the last five years Dr. Thomas has served on various committees at Saint Mary's
University, some of which have been: the Arts Executive, the English Department's
Standards Committee, the English Department's Equity Committee and the InterUniversity Women's Selection Committee.
She has co-authored a number of books, as well has edited Out of the Depths: The
Experiences of Mi 'Kmaw Children at the Indian Residential School at Shubenacadie,
Nova Scotia with Isabelle Knockwood. Ms. Knockwood is a Mi'kmaw elder who wanted
to write a book and as a colleague of Dr. Thomas' says "she had the good fortune to have
Dr. Thomas in her second year... however, who took Isabelle Knockwood's concerns so
seriously that professor and student worked together to make sure the project came to
fruition." Dr. Thomas' colleague goes on to say "this book, written with the assistance of
Dr. Thomas, is the most dramatic example of her work with students, but it is also entirely
characteristic. If students need her time and her energy, she is prepared to offer both. If a
student needs extra work, she is willing to give it. If a student needs career counselling,
she is ready to discuss and advise."
Together with Ms. Jo Stern, Dr. Thomas founded the Congenial Space Project which
explored ways to make better use of the space around the University for independent
learning opportunities. One of the spaces that has been renovated to be more readerwelcoming is the Tim Horton's area in the Loyola Academic Complex.
Students have high praise for Dr. Thomas with one noting that "she's innovative,
engaging, and always original." This same student continued "Dr. Thomas' own
enthusiasm for learning and knowledge reflects on her students. If she's passionate
about something, so are we." Dr. Thomas has obviously won the respect of her students
and is admired for her teaching ability. Another student noted that, "I found her teaching
methods energetic and captivating."
From what her students and colleagues have said about her, it seemed natural that she be
awarded The Reverend William A. Stewart, S.J., Medal for Excellence in Teaching, 2002.
President's Award for Excellence in Research
Established in 1989, this annual award honours outstanding research conducted by a fulltime faculty member who has been employed at the University for at least three years.
Presentation of the award takes place at Convocation. A detailed nomination procedure
has been delineated whereby each Dean of Faculty may select one member of his Faculty
who has been nominated by the 15th October, and whose candidacy he is prepared to
support. Other sponsors must be researchers, at least two of whom must be from outside
Saint Mary's University. The award is adjudicated by the Senate Research Committee,
which has the authority to decide which nominee, if any, is deserving of the award. The
selection criteria consists of two component parts, namely productivity, whereby the
nominee must have a record of continued exceptional contribution to research/
scholarship; and secondly, recognition. The nominee must have attained national or
international recognition as an authority in a major field of knowledge. The President's
Award for Excellence in Research consists of a framed certificate presented traditionally at
Fall Convocation together with a cheque for $ 1,500. Previous winners of this significant
award are:

The recipient of the President's Award for Excellence in Research this year is Dr. Bert
Hartnell, Professor of Mathematics and Computing Science.
Born in Rainy River, Ontario, Dr. Hartnell graduated with a Bachelor of Mathematics
degree from the University of Waterloo in 1969 followed the next year by a Master's
degree in the same subject area. Four years later, he graduated with a Ph.D.
(Combinatorics and Optimization). During this period of time, he held three National
Research Council Scholarships as well as the University of Waterloo's Tuition
Scholarship. In 1965, he was an Ontario Scholar. From 1974 to 1976, he held a National
Research Council Post Doctoral Fellowship at the University of Manitoba.
In 1970 to 1971, he was a Secondary School Teacher in Guelph, Ontario. Then, in 1976, he
began his University teaching career, first at the Brandon University, then at Sir Wilfred
Grenfell College, Memorial University ofNewfoundland. He joined the staff of Saint
Mary's University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics &
Computing Science in 1980 and has been with the University ever since. The next year he
was promoted to an Associate Professorship and in 1988, was made a Full Professor.
From July 1992 to the present, he has also served as an Adjunct Professor in the
Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computing Science at Dalhousie University.
In the summer of 1996, he was a Visiting Professor (Research), Institute of Electronic
Systems, Aalborg University, Denmark.
In recommending Dr. Hartnell for the President's Award for Excellence in Research, the
Dean of Science, Dr. David H. S. Richardson, noted that he "has a long list of research
publications and has been supported continuously by NSERC with operating grants since
he started his career at Saint Mary's University. ... He has contributed to the research
community through service in training students, on Examining Committees, reviewing
grant proposals, and is a member of Professional Committees. ... He has contributed to
developing an excellent reputation for research at Saint Mary's University...". Indeed, a
perusal of his curriculum vitae reveals that he has 63 refereed publications to his credit;
three articles submitted to refereed journals; one chapter of a book; four scientific reports
and announcements; two invited addresses; and 51 papers presented at conferences.
In terms of the value of his external grants, they total in excess of $ 150,000.00 in the period
from 1977 to the present. In addition, he has received a significant number of internal
awards at the University.
With respect to his refereeing activity, he has been a reviewer for American Mathematical
Society publications; has refereed for such journals as Discrete Math, Discrete Applied
Math and The Canadian Mathematical Bulletin-, is one of the editors of the Bulletin of
the Institute of Combinatorics and Its Applications, and has reviewed grant proposals for
NSERC as well as the Foundation for Research Development of South Africa.
In terms of his departmental and university activities, he has co-supervised a doctoral
student at Dalhousie University; is one of the organizers for the Discrete Math Seminar,
usually hosted by Saint Mary's University; has served most years on Saint Mary's
University's Faculty Union Scholarship Committee as well as serving on the Committee on
Computer Science and the Computer Policy Committee. In addition, he served as the
original Saint Mary's University liaison person with the Technical University of Nova
Scotia, helping to set up the curriculum for the two year programme at Saint Mary's
University for admission to TUNS Bachelor of Computer Science Programme, and also
served as Saint Mary's University representative on a sub-Committee of the Metro
Universities Committee on Co-operation to examine the Royal Commission's Report on
Post-Secondary Education. He served a three-year term as Chairperson of the Department
of Mathematics & Computing Science at Saint Mary's University from 1981 to 1984.
One of his colleagues indicated that "this champion of research, both within the
university and without, has carved a research haven for himself on what was rather
unfertile ground: when he arrived at Saint Mary's University in 1980 he was one of only
two graph theorists in the province. Bert encompasses a rare balance of teacher,
supporter, and creator that has served to enhance his students' and colleagues' research
abilities to enhance his field and to enhance the reputation of Saint Mary's University."
This same colleague indicated that "while his research record alone is sufficient grounds
for an award, I believe that Bert has made another equally important impact on
mathematical research through his remarkable ability to inspire others. Here, I am not
referring to his outstanding classroom presence but rather to his interactions with his
professional colleagues at the dinner table, on walks across campus, over coffee, or while
opening a bottle of his favorite Australian wine. His unique ability to challenge, cajole,
excite, and awaken the spirit of discovery is, in my experience, unparalleled. This has
resulted in collaborations with mathematicians from the United States, Denmark, the
British Isles, Israel, Brazil, South Africa, and from all over Canada." Indeed, one of these
international colleagues noted that "he is one of the top 20 researchers in [his] field of
studies in which more than 300 different researchers have published...Dr. Hartnell may well
be the most creative researcher in this field".

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENTS
At this year's Spring Convocations, Saint Mary's University will confer seven honorary
degrees: four in the afternoon and three in the evening.
AFTERNOON CONVOCATION
Mansfield H. (Jim) Brock
Mr. Mansfield Brock received a Bachelor of Science, (major in Physics and Mathematics),
from McGill University; a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from London University;
and from the University of Toronto a Masters Degree in Educational Administration. He
currently resides in Bermuda with his wife of over 40 years, Beverley. They have three
children, Arlene, Malcolm and Michelle, and four grandchildren, Tsilala, Maquira, Meleina
and Mayalen. His niece, Mary Lynn (Swan) Robinson is a Saint Mary's graduate in
Commerce.
Currently Mr. Brock is the Chief Administration Officer and Director of the Colonial
Insurance Group of companies which operate in Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Cayman
Islands and the British Virgin Islands. He was Chairman of the Bermuda Monetary
Authority (1993 to 2000); the General Manager/Corporate Secretary of the Bank ofN. T.
Butterfield & Son Ltd. (Bermuda's oldest bank) (1988 - 1992); the Financial Secretary for
Bermuda, (1982 1987); and Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Education (1977 1981).
He had previously worked in the field of Education. He was the first Chief Executive
Officer of the Bermuda College; for ten years taught Physics and Mathematics at The
Berkley Institute, Bermuda (1955 - 1965); and was the Headmaster of Sandys Secondary
School (1965-1974).
Community involvement has also been very important to Mr. Brock as is evident from his
current and past volunteerism. The Commission on Competitiveness, the Bermuda Boy
Scout Association, and the National Drug Commission are but a few of the many
organizations which have benefited from his generosity, time, and expertize. He is also a
member and past president of the Hamilton Rotary Club and a member of the Royal Naval
Officers Association. Currently he is the immediate past Chair of the Board for the
Canadian Scholarship Trust Foundation.
Mr. Brock was appointed Justice of the Peace, J.P., by His Excellency the Govenor of
Bermuda; also a Commander of the British Empire by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth.
In his spare time, he enjoys golf, reading, and the activities of the Hamilton Rotary Club.
William J. Byron, S.J.
A native of Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Father Byron attended St. Joseph's Preparatory
School and then served in the army's 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment. Following this
service he spent three years at Saint Joseph's University, Philadelphia and in 1950 entered
the Jesuit order and was ordained a priest in 1961. From Saint Louis University he
received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy and Master of Arts in Economics.
Father Byron also has two theology degrees from Woodstock College and received a
doctorate in economics from the University of Maryland.
Father Byron began his distinguished career in 1956 at the Scranton (Pa) Prepartory
School. His career has taken him from Loyola College in Baltimore, Woodstock College,
Loyola University, New Orleans (where he was the Dean of Arts and Sciences) to the
Catholic University of America, where he served as Dean from 1982 - 1992. Father Byron
was also President of the University of Scranton and most recently has taught in the
McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University. His specializations in
business ethics and social responsibility of business are currently put to excellent use as
he directs the Centre for Advanced Study of Ethics at Georgetown University where his
research interest focuses on mid-career executive transitions.
He is a trustee of CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield, Loyola College in Maryland, and the
University of San Francisco. Father Byron's community involvement also has been with
the Board of Commissioners of the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare
Organizations and the Board of Directors of the Federal commission on National
Community Service (now the Corporation for National Service). He was a founding
director and past chairman of Bread for the World.
He has authored a significant number of books and articles, including Quadrangle
Considerations, which was the winner of the Catholic Press Association's 1990's Best
Book Award in Education. Currently, Father Byron is the pastor of Holy Trinity Church in
Washington, DC.
Aside from his outstanding personal contribution in the area of business ethics, it is most
fitting to honour this distinguished scholar in this, Saint Mary's Bicentennial year. It was
the Jesuit Fathers who ran Saint Mary's for thirty years (1940 to 1970) - a vital era in our
history, which saw the development of the solid foundations which enabled the institution
to grow, prosper, and expand its impact, both locally and globally.
James. J. Oliver
Born in Pennsylvania, in the 1960's Mr. Oliver was encouraged to attend Saint Mary's
University to play football. While at Saint Mary's not only did he play football, he was
active in the Student Council; wrote articles for The Journal (the student newspaper); and
graduated with his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1967. It was also while he was at the
University that he met his wife, Judy O'Dea. They have two children, Justin and
Christine, both of whom have chosen to follow their father's footsteps into law. In 1970,
Mr. Oliver received his law degree from Dalhousie University. He also has a Medical
Malpractice Certificate from the University of San Francisco and attended Harvard
University School of Law, with an emphasis on Trial Advocacy.
Currently, "Skip", as he is known to his friends, is the senior partner in the general civil
practice law firm of Oliver, Caiola & Gowen, LLC. His areas of speciality are product
liability and complex litigation, and he has been successful in suing for and obtaining
multi-million dollar judgements. However, the case he is most renowned for is not the one
that was awarded the most money but is the one which has had a significant impact, as it
was the first of its kind and will lead the way for other former U.S. hostages to sue their
captors. This was a prominent case which resulted in the successful judgment for the
Hizballah hostages. The first success in the case came when Mr. Oliver and his
colleagues were successful in changing the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act of 1976, to
allow United States courts to take action against sovereign states which participate in
terrorist activities. Once this was achieved he proceeded to win a $65 million judgement
for his clients. This matter did not end here, however, as the Foreign Sovereign
Immunities Act of 1976 did not allow for the collection of punitive damages. In October
2000, President Clinton signed the Justice for Victims of Trafficking and Violence
Protection Act of 2000, which allowed the U.S. government to use frozen Iranian assets to
compensate victims of terrorism.
In addition to a very demanding legal practice, Mr. Oliver has also always found time to
give to his community. He served on the Bicentennial Dedication in East Norriton
Township, and also was the Vice-Chairman of their Board of Commissioners. He has been
the President of the American Cancer Society of Norristown and was a member on the
Little League's Board of Directors. His community involvement has been acknowledged
by a number of the honours bestowed on him by various organizations, such as the
Chapel of four Chaplains for Service to Community (1980); the American Red Cross of
Central Montgomery County (1979); the American Cancer Society (1985-1995) are but a
few of the organizations which have provided tangible recognition of his dedication.
"Skip's" never cut his close ties with Saint Mary's. For all of his many efforts over the
years, the University is most grateful. Santamarians hope that the Oliver Family will
continue to enjoy many pleasant summers at St. Margaret's Bay!
Simon Spatz
Born in Uterwalden, Poland in 1913, Mr. Spatz began his entrepreneurial career at the early
age of 12, buying cattle in a town 30 km east of his home and selling the meat in the city of
Lemberg, 20 km to the west. By the time that war broke out, Mr. Spatz became a very
successful and wealthy businessman. Sadly during World Ward II he lost most of his
family. In 1946 he married Riva Melamedek and they went into the meat business, both
retail and wholesale, and prospered. In February 1950 they immigrated to Canada with
their son, Jim.
Shortly after arriving in Canada, Mr. Spatz continued his entrepreneurial ways when he
purchased his first business, the Southend Market, where he specialized in quality cuts of
meat. Within two years his business had expanded to four times its original size. During
this time Mr. Spatz also launched his real estate business, which eventually would be
incorporated as Southwest Apartments. In the late 1960's Mr. Spatz went into real estate
on a full time basis.
He soon learned enough about the construction business to become his own general
contractor. He prospered by building in good locations and renovating with the best
materials. His apartments were noticeably nicer than most and he kept them that way, year
after year. He respected his tenants, trusted them, got to know them and liked them. The
result was that these apartments were always in demand and the company has always had
enviable occupancy levels and lease renewal rates.
Southwest Properties has grown to become a leading developer of residential and
commercial property in Atlantic Canada and is the largest privately-owned, owner/
operator of multi-family residential buildings in the Halifax region. Some of its
commercially-owned properties include, the Bank of Canada Building, Marine House, the
Royal Bank Building, and Sunnyside Mall in Bedford. The company has recently
completed the new Bishop's Landing project on the Halifax waterfront.
Mr. Spatz has always had a personal concern for and dedication to environmental issues.
For example Southwest Properties was one of the first residential apartment companies to
offer tenants recycling and composting in an effort to reduce the amount of waste being
sent to the landfill. The company also donates discarded appliances to Parker Street Food
and Furniture Bank and encourages its tenants to give unwanted furniture to them. Some
also are donated to facilities involved in the training of appliance repair people.
Mr. Spatz is also personally involved in his community. He has served as a member of the
Directors of the Beth Israel Synagogue; as a canvasser for the United Israel Appeal and
also the Israel Histadrut Campaign. His generosity has advanced a number of cultural
entities such as Neptune Theatre, The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, and the Halifax
Buskers' Festival.
EVENING CONVOCATION
Phyllis Grosskurth
Dr. Grosskurth attended St. Clement's School, Toronto, and after receiving her Bachelor of
Arts, Honours English from the University of Toronto, proceeded to the University of
Ottawa for her Master of Arts. In 1962 she obtained her doctorate from the University of
London and subsequently also received a Doctor of Letters from Trinity College in
Toronto. She is married to Robert McMullan (the President of Abbeyfield Houses Society
of Canada) and has three children, Christopher, Brian and Anne as well as five grandsons.
She is the well known author of eight books, including biographies of John Addington
Symonds, Havelock Ellis, Margaret Mead, early Freudian pioneers, Melanie Klein and
Lord Byron. Her first work, The Memoirs of John Addington Symonds: The Secret
Homosexual Life of a Leading Nineteenth-Century Man of Letters, was the first frank
book about the life of a homosexual. It won two awards, the Governor General's Award for
non-fiction (1965) and the University of British Columbia Award for Biography. Havelock
Ellis was nominated for the National Book Award in Britain in 1980 and Melanie Klein for
the Governor-General's Award in 1986. Byron: The Flawed Angel was nominated for the
Trillium Award and received the University of British Columbia Award for Biography
(1998).
Dr. Grosskurth has reviewed extensively for The Times Literary Supplement and the New
York Review of Books. She has also lectured widely throughout Europe, North and
South America.
One of the first women hired by the English Department at University College, University
of Toronto (1965), she is now one of its Professors Emerita. In 2000, she was named an
officer of the Order of Canada.
Terry Kelly
Born in Newfoundland, at the tender age of seven Terry Kelly's parents made the difficult
decision to send their son to Halifax to attend the Halifax School for the Blind. It was here
that his musical talents developed. After graduating from high school, Terry enrolled at
Saint Mary's University in a Bachelor of Arts degree program.
Mr. Kelly continued working on his music and it finally paid off in 1993 at the East Coast
Music Awards when he won in all of the five categories for which he had been nominated.
This had never happened previously and was another milestone that he had set for
himself. These categories were, Album of the Year, for "Divided Highway", SOCAN Song
of the Year for "In My Father's House", Male Vocalist, Country Artist, and Live Act. Mr.
Kelly has also been nominated for a Juno and for four Canadian Country Music Awards'.
In addition to his musical talents Mr. Kelly is a well-known motivational speaker. He
developed and has presented his "We Can Do Anything" lecture to thousands of
teachers, students, professionals across Canada and in the United States. For students at
the Sir Frederick Fraser School for the Blind in Halifax, he also has designed a workshop,
the focal point being the transition from secondary to post secondary education, and to
the workplace.
While Mr. Kelly has been blind since the age of two he has never let his disability hold
him back from either his career or personal life. In 1979 he became the third blind man in
the world to run a mile in less than five minutes, thus qualifying him for the 1980 Paraolympics in Arnhem, Holland.
Mr. Kelly has been recognized for his frequent contributions to his community. In
February 2000, along with Stephanie McClelland and Walter Gretzky he received the King
Clancy Award in recognition of his contributions in promoting increased public awareness
of the potential of disabled persons. Last spring the University of Kings College, Halifax,
awarded him an honorary Doctor of Civil Law degree. In March 2002 the Lieutenant
Governor of Nova Scotia, The Honourable Myra A. Freeman, hosted a luncheon to
commemorate Mr. Kelly's latest CD, "The Power of the Dream". This is the first CD in the
world which is accessible to the blind, the visually impaired and the sighted alike, by
virtue of the Braille liner notes. In addition all the printed information is included in an
html file on the enhanced CD.
Today, some of Terry's free time is spent jogging and skiing. If that is not enough, Terry is
talking about skydiving - so keep a watchful eye above, just in case!
John Savage
Born in Newport, Gwent, United Kingdom to an Irish family doctor who had settled in
Wales and his Welsh wife, John was educated at Prior Park College, Bath, England, and
received his medical degree from Queen's University, Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1956. He
and his wife, Margaret, have been married for forty-four years and have seven children,
Shelagh, Michael, Jane, Philip, Patrick, Barney and Brigid - the youngest being born in
Canada.
Dr. Savage completed his Compulsory National Service with the Royal Army Medical
Corps(1958- 1961). In 1962 he set up the first pre-natal clinic in South Wales.
In 1966, the Savages immigrated to Canada. Dr. Savage joined the Dartmouth Medical
Centre, where he became partner in 1967 and practiced for the next 25 years. During that
time he took an extremely active role in the medical and social needs of his community.
For example he was the Medical Director of the North Preston Medical and Child Care
Society (1968 - 1988); established the first mainland Nova Scotia Detox Centre in the
Salvation Army Hostel on Gottingen Street, Halifax (1973), where he served as the Medical
Director until 1985. He was a founding member of Big Brothers/Big Sisters in the Halifax/
Dartmouth area and also of the Development and Peace Committee, of the Roman Catholic
Archdiocese of Halifax. He was the Vice President of the Nova Scotia Home for Coloured
Children in 1973 and a board member for 10 years.
He received the Family Practice Literary Award for the best article submitted by a doctor in
the Atlantic Provinces, "Early Intervention in Alcoholism" in 1985. Dr. Savage has also
received the YMCA Peace Medal (1987) and in 1991 the Environmental Award from the
Wildlife Association, Nova Scotia Division. And the list goes on demonstrating why he
can rightfully be termed "a Renaissance Man".
In 1985 Dr. Savage entered politics when he was elected as the Mayor of Dartmouth, a
post to which he was subsequently re-elected in 1988 and 1991. In this position he
established Dartmouth as a "Healthy Community" - physically, environmentally, socially
and spiritually. In June 1992 he was elected leader of the Provincial Liberal Party, followed
the next year by winning the Dartmouth South seat. The Liberals won a majority of seats
that year and he thus became Premier of Nova Scotia, a position which he held until his
resignation in July 1997, although he continued to serve as a Member of the Legislative
Assembly until February 1998.
In retirement, Dr. Savage has maintained his involvement in a number of international
projects from Niger and The Gambia, West Africa to a small Russian republic, Chuvashia
where he is part of a team of health professionals advising on health reform. He is also on
the board of Oikocredit Atlantic, a newly formed local branch of an international microcredit organization, Oikocredit International, with headquarters in the Netherlands. This
organization secures investments for small projects, often run by women, in the
developing world.
This gifted and energetic doctor is truly a magnificent role model for all Nova Scotians.
AFTERNOON CONVOCATION
VALEDICTORIAN
Karen Williams
Originally from New Glasgow, Karen graduated from New Glasgow High School. She was
one of the first graduates from Mount Saint Vincent University's Bachelor of Public
Relations degree programme in 1981. In 1997 on her application to the Master of Business
Administration programme at Saint Mary's, Karen noted that "The onset of middle age
does not mean life and learning are over. Rather, it is a time for new beginnings and the
return to formal education.... I have a passion to learn. This is neither something to do
because it is expected of me nor because all my options are exhausted." The mother of
two stepsons, Joey (16) and Jeffrey (14), she is married to Keith who is also a member of
this year's graduating class.
Karen is an active member of the Blessed Pope John XXIII parish in Colby Village, where
she and her husband organize the Marriage Preparation Program. The entire family is
involved in the Lifeteen program.
Saint Mary's University was a logicial choice for Karen as her father attended Saint
Mary's High School (1945-1947) and Saint Mary's College (1947-1950). He played on both
the football and hockey teams and has been the recipient of the "Silver M', "Gold M", and
football's Block and Tackle Award.
Today Karen is graduating with a Master of Business Administration degree.

HISTORY OF SAINT MARY'S UNIVERSITY
Saint Mary's University was founded in 1802 to provide opportunities for higher learning
to young Catholic men. Its founder, the Reverend Edmund Burke, had meagre resources
to work with, but on later being named Bishop with responsibility for Nova Scotia, he
continued to support the college as essential to the development of the Catholic
community. In 1841, the Nova Scotia House of Assembly gave formal recognition of its
academic role. Its legal status was confirmed in perpetuity by enactment in 1852.
In 1913, the Christian Brothers of Ireland, a teaching order, were invited by the
Archdiocese of Halifax to direct the college and its academic program. During the ensuing
years, Saint Mary's University became more widely known for the quality of its
undergraduate teaching and continued to develop new instructional programs, most
notably within its Faculty of Commerce. In 1940 the Upper Canada Province of The
Society of Jesus was invited to succeed the Christian Brothers as administrators and
teachers in the University, and for thirty years until the enactment in 1970 of the new act
of incorporation, the college remained under Jesuit supervision. The long-standing
emphasis on liberal arts and commerce was extended to include new programs in science,
engineering, and teacher education. Extension courses became an important part of the
University's commitment to an active educational role in the community. The newest
building on campus, The Sobey Building, opened in the fall of 1998 and houses the Frank
H. Sobey Faculty of Commerce and provides meeting rooms as well as state-of-the-art
classrooms for all three faculties of the University.
As the University begins a year-long series of events to celebrate its Bicentennial
Anniversary, world wide attention will be focused on our very own postage stamp which
was officially launched on 15 May and which will go on sale on 27 May 2002. Watch for
our future celebrations during the next twelve months.
AN EXPLANATION FOR OUR GUESTS: THE CONVOCATION CEREMONY
(a)
The Procession
The ceremony starts with the procession — the entering of the members of Convocation,
beginning with the Marshall of Convocation and the students who will be presented with
degrees, diplomas, and certificates during the service. As the students fill up the chairs in
the Gymnasium, they will give the impression that today's ceremony really is, as
convocations traditionally were, a meeting of the whole University. (The word
"convocation" means "calling-together".) Indeed, the Gymnasium could not hold all the
individuals who are part of Saint Mary's — the students, the professors, the
administration, the staff, and a large number of alumni around the world — not to mention
their families and friends.
Next in the procession are special guests, the Members of Faculty, the Board of
Governors, and the Deans of the Faculties.
Next are honorary degree recipients. In addition to "earned" degrees awarded to students
who have studied and met the usual requirements, annually the University confers several
"honorary" degrees on individuals who have been designated by the University's Board
of Governors and Senate as deserving special honour. To symbolize the degrees, they will
receive hoods trimmed with specially designated colours. The person receiving this
honour will be introduced during the Convocation ceremony and a brief text is read to
explain why she merits the award. Details are found in the earlier portion in this program.
The final members of the academic procession are the Vice-President, Academic and
Research (who presides over Convocation), the President, and the Chancellor of the
University. Frequently, the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia and her husband join the
procession.
Many will have colourful gowns and hoods of institutions from across Canada, the United
States, and many nations of the world.
(b)
The Ceremonial Mace
The ceremonial mace, which is carried by the Marshall of Convocation at the head of the
academic procession, was presented to Saint Mary's in April 1980 and used for the first
time at the Spring Convocation of that same year. It symbolizes the University's authority
to grant degrees. It was made and presented to the University by Maritime Command in
recognition of Saint Mary's alumni killed in both world wars and also serving members of
the Canadian Armed Forces who have been students at the University.
The mace is made of oak with a cast brass crown and brass plates carrying traditional
ceremonial engravings. The plates represent the contribution to Saint Mary's by the
Jesuit Fathers, the Christian Brothers of Ireland, the Archdiocese of Halifax, the LaSalle
Christian Brothers, the Lay Teachers, and the Armed Forces.

To honour those outstanding students, the President's Hall of Academic Excellence was
inaugurated on 22 May 2002. Located in the main hallway of the McNally Building,
directly outside the President's Office, this Hall will display the names of all students who
earned their parchments with one of the distinctions previously cited. It will also include
the names of students who won academic medals at graduation. This Bicentennial project
will serve as a permanent and very public recognition of the academic excellence of Saint
Mary's University's students.
TRADITIONS
Traditions form a very important component of a University. A number of these are
associated with Convocation, including the five described in the following paragraphs.
(a)
University Crest
Hanging above the centre of the stage is a replica of the University crest, designed in the
1940's by the Reverend Daniel Fogarty, S.J., then Dean of Education. Each symbol in the
crest has a significance relevant to the various phases and history of the University.
On the outer portion of the crest, the name and location of the University are inscribed in
Latin and, in Roman numerals (1841), the date the University received its charter
authorizing it to grant degrees.
The book shown above the shield represents learning and knowledge. The inscription on
the page of the book is in Latin — "Age Quod Agis". This is the motto of the University
which exhorts all those connected with the University to strive to do their best in
everything that they do. This quotation is from the Irish Christian Brothers and
symbolizes their contribution to the development of the institution.
The upper part of the shield has the official seal of the Jesuits with I.H.S. being the Greek
initials for Christ's name. Below these initials are the three nails which represent the
Crucifixion, and surrounding these is the Crown of Thorns.
The two crowns represent a dual loyalty — to the then Dominion of Canada and to the
British Commonwealth. Below these crowns is the thistle, which stands for Nova Scotia's
Scottish heritage.
(b)
The Presidential Medallion of Office
On 22 October 2000, a Medallion of Office was officially presented to the University and
used for the first time that same day at the installation of Dr. J. Colin Dodds as President.
Designed and crafted by James Bradshaw and Bruce Babcock of James Bradshaw
Jewelery Design Studios, Inc., Halifax, its centre is a University Gold Medal, traditionally
awarded to the top graduating students. It symbolizes the University's deep commitment
to academic excellence. It is surrounded by contrasting sterling silver, representing the
diversity of the institution's students and of its academic programs. It was generously
presented by Mary Eileen Donahoe and her family as a memorial to the late Senator
Richard A. Donahoe, Q.C., K.S.G., LL.D.(Hon.), a member of one of the earliest Boards of
Governors, in recognition of his career of public service and his love of Saint Mary's.
(c)
The Hooding Ceremony
As you will observe, all the graduates and members of the academic procession are attired
in the basic elements of formal academic dress, which at Saint Mary's follows the general
guidelines established at Oxford and Cambridge Universities in England. Formal attire
consists of academic robe, hood and mortar board, although at Saint Mary's the latter is
limited to Master's graduates only. The academic dress worn by each participant depends
upon the academic level attained. There is a special attire for the Bachelor level
candidates, for the Master's, and the Doctorate. While tradition has dictated the style or
cut of the academic attire, each post-secondary institution, for the most part, will amend
certain details of the attire to suit its own particular tastes and traditions.
The academic hood which each graduate is wearing symbolizes the degree into which the
student will be or has been admitted. The hood itself traces its tradition back to the
Middle Ages, when its prototype, with a cowl-like appendage and tail, was used to cover
the shoulders in the cold and draughty medieval buildings or in inclement weather.
Gradually this garment was modified and the hood assumed an academic rather than
functional significance. The hood has two basic elements: the trim on the outer edge and
an inner satin lining. Each hood has its outer edge trimmed with a colour to. indicate a
particular faculty and degree: white symbolizes Arts; gold, Science; grey, Commerce; and
white with pale blue, Education. The hood for the Master's candidates is essentially the
same as the Bachelor's hood except that the trim is usually an inch or two wider. All the
Bachelor level hoods are lined with satin in the colours of the institution granting the
degree. Hence at Saint Mary's the hood is lined with maroon satin with a white chevron.
The Master's hood at Saint Mary's is lined with maroon satin only to give it added
distinction from the Bachelor's.
A symbolic hooding ceremony has become a traditional feature of all Convocations at
Saint Mary's.
(d)
Flags on the Stage
Each year Saint Mary's has a number of non-Canadians in its student body. The flags
which you see displayed on the stage for Convocation are from some of the countries
from which these students come, not necessarily graduating students, but those in any
year of study. The globalization of the Saint Mary's University community is a feature of
justifiable pride which contributes markedly to the growth and understanding of both
Canadian and non-Canadian students.
Also included in the University's permanent collection of flags is one from the
International Year of the Disabled signifying the University's permanent commitment to
people with disabilities. Also part of this collection is that of the Mi'kmaqs' in recognition
of their First Nation's Status. For the first time at our Spring 2002 Convocations the
University's Bicentennial flag has taken its rightful place in our permanent collection.
(e)
Graduation Alumni Pins
The Alumni Association of Saint Mary's University has generously provided an Alumni
Pin again this year. To commerate our 200th Anniversairy a special designation has been
added to this year's pin. This is a tradition which started with the 1992 Spring
Convocation. Graduates are encouraged to wear theirs with pride and to consider
becoming an active member of the Association.
A symbolic presentation of an Alumni pin to the Hooding Candidate by the President of
the Alumni Association has become a traditional feature of all Convocations at Saint
Mary's University.

The University's symbols and traditions reflect its roots as well as looking to its future,
and the ritual of Convocation looks to the roots of the University as well as being a
beginning for the students who now enter a new stage in their lives. Indeed, both the
symbols and the Convocation look back far beyond the beginning of this University to
the centuries of academic life in western civilization. Today the University dresses in
clothes which are symbolic, not functional, and goes through the 600-year-old ritual of a
convocation for the conferment of degrees, diplomas, and certificates.
We thank you for being present to share in it with the Saint Mary's University community.
