Issue 4 Term 2, Week 4, May 2014 Principal’s Message - Rev Fr Joseph Sleiman Welcome back to Term 2. I trust everyone had a wonderful holiday. The Easter season celebrated by the Church at this time leading to the Feast of Pentecost provides us with a powerful opportunity to reflect on the virtue of hope in our lives, in the life of our community and in our world. As we commence Term 2, I trust our students will immerse themselves in the experiences offered with hopeful enthusiasm that speaks loudly of our Easter joy. On Tuesday 6th May, we had a special visit to the College from Dr. May Chidiac who was in Australia for a short visit. Dr Chidiac addressed Years 11 & 12 about her life in the media, her challenges since her attempted assassination and the challenges that Lebanon faces without the influence of all Lebanese citizens residing outside of Lebanon. She encouraged the students to value their heritage and to maintain their roots and ties to their homeland. Sunday the 27th April marked an historical event in the Catholic Church where we saw history being made in a double canonization of two Popes, John XXIII and John Paul II, at Vatican City, attended by up to 1 million faithful. In this historic event, Pope Francis paid tribute to "two men of courage" who he said had "co-operated with the Holy Spirit in renewing and updating the church". "They were priests, bishops and popes of the 20th century. They lived through the tragic events of that century, but they were not overwhelmed by them," he said. I hope that we can take something from the lives of our new saints and adapt it to our everyday lives. Last Sunday was Mother’s Day, a time to remember our Mothers and all the sacrifices they make for their family. Happy Mother’s Day to all our mothers. We especially remember our Mother Mary and ask her blessing upon us all. We would like to thank all the mothers who attended the Mother’s Day Mass and morning tea, and also thank the P & F for their organisation on the day. Head of School’s Message - Mr John Klumpp NAPLAN has come and gone for another year. While the assessments themselves are not that difficult, there tends to be quite an amount of stress surrounding them. Unlike the assessments we conduct at school, where the students receive their results and feedback within a week, the results of the NAPLAN will not be available to us for a number of months. So what is their worth?, you may ask. The results will provide the College with the data required to help us make decisions about when and how we deploy staff to support student learning and what and how teaching will take place in the future at the College. More importantly, staff are currently working on finalising assessment records for Semester One. (this has already been done for Year 12). The assessment records are the foundations to what will appear on your child’s report card at the end of June. The mid-year report is a good indicator of how your child is achieving at school and where their strengths and challenges lie. I encourage all parents to speak to their children about their attitudes to work so far this year. Parents who have concerns about their child’s progress are encouraged to take the time to make an appointment with their child’s teacher or teachers well before the report interview day at the end of term. This is important, especially as parents and students do not like any unfortunate surprises on report interview day. It also gives you time to devise a plan of action to ensure that optimum progress is made in the second semester. We will be conducting our Semester One Awards Ceremonies in June this year. We aim to vitalise these ceremonies and I look forward to seeing as many parents as possible attending these occasions to join the celebration of what we do well as a College. Prayer to our Mother Mary Lord Jesus, You have known a mother's love and tender care, and You will hear, while for our mothers most dear,we offer this Mother's Day prayer. Protect the lives, we pray, of those who have given us the gift of life. May our mothers know from day to day the deepening glow of joy that comes from Your presence. We cannot pay our debts for all the love that we have received; but, You, Lord, will not forget their due reward Bless our mothers both on Earth and in Heaven. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Director of Curriculum (K-6) - Mrs Tina Harb Dear Parents, It is amazing how quickly the holidays have come and gone. I hope all our families enjoyed their Easter celebrations. We have come in to a very busy term with so many events and excursions organized for your children. Already we have had the Healthy Harold program run across all the Primary classes. The children enjoyed learning about the wonderful message about health and safety. Our Year 3 and Year 5 have just this week completed their NAPLAN tests. We now look forward to receiving their results most probably in early September. Next week our Year 6 students attend Camp. I wish to thank our dedicated teachers for their work organizing this event, especially Ms Hawwa who has ensured the program of activities organised will be amazing for the children. In regards to our amazing P & F Committee and their organizational skills, we have had a lovely morning tea with all the frills and of course the children have had the opportunity to purchase gifts for their mothers. The next venture will be the Disco scheduled for Friday 30th May. I look forward to an amazing evening of fun for not only our children but for our parents as well. Just a small note on housekeeping, if I could please ask that all items of your children’s clothing are labelled. We have ended up with a basket full of lost property for weeks now. I am very understanding of the cost of replacing lost uniforms and so labelling your child’s clothing clearly will help immensely in ensuring your child is able to locate a lost item. Finally, I wish to convey the importance of communicating with either myself, the Stage Coordinator for your child’s grade or your child’s teacher where the need arises. Please feel free to contact me or make time to see your child’s teacher or Stage Coordinator if you have any queries or questions. God bless. Director of Curriculum (7-12) - Mrs Karen Jubb Thank you to teachers, parents and students of Year 12 who participated in the very successful Year 12 Report Card Evening on Tuesday 13th May. The twilight event allowed teachers to discuss their students’ performance in assessments, as well as the recent half yearly examinations. Teachers provided information on what students need to do over the remaining two HSC terms, in order to achieve their HSC ambitions. Any parent who was unable to attend the evening is invited to contact teachers to discuss their child’s results. Library News - Ms Christine Golz Year 5 & 6 will be attending an author visit on Friday the 13 th of June (Week 7). James Phelan, author of the Last Thirteen series, http://jamesphelan.com.au/my-new-series-the-lastthirteen/ will be giving a talk about his novels. If students wish they will be able to purchase one of the last Thirteen series books and have it signed. We will also be holding a Book fair in Week 8 from Tuesday the 17th of June until Friday the 20th of June. Students and parents will be able to purchase Ashton Scholastic Book Fair books from the library from 8:154pm each day. All purchases contribute towards new resources for the library. Happy Reading 2 Director of Pastoral Care (K-12) - Mrs Bernadette Hems We were delighted that at the start of term we were able to award our students with so many certificates for excellent attendance and punctuality in Term 1. Improving attendance and punctuality has been one of our pastoral priorities and monitoring and evaluation of the data suggests that we are moving in the right direction. Last term we also established the Classroom standards in the High School. This means that there is a consistent approach to expectations across the board in all classrooms. In Term 2 there will be a focus on classroom and playground rules and expectations in the Primary School. We are implementing Record of Achievement across the board K-12 to encourage our students to value their gifts and talents and to celebrate them. These are important documents which will inform reference and report writing. Students are encouraged to think about all that they do well. Our pastoral focus is to ensure that our students think positively about themselves. The students who feel happy in their varied achievements are more successful academically! Mrs Mansour has established a community profile which means that when students contribute in any type of community service or charity work, it is acknowledged. This will also form part of the Record of Achievement. To tie in with our positive behaviour management it is also our intention to create a whole school system of rewards. I am happy to receive any parental input to this. If parents would like to contribute funds to sponsor individual trophies or display cabinets, all donations would be gratefully received. We intend to display our students’ achievements around the school as a constant reminder of their God given gifts and talents. We are a school that celebrates all that we do well. One challenge that we have set for the school is to create our own video version of the ‘Happy’ song which is popular at the moment. The intention is to invite all members of our school community to take part. It may just involve lip synching and dancing to part of the song. You can see various versions of this on the Internet. If parents would like to be involved please let us know. It could be fun! We have updated our uniform policy in both the High School and the Primary. We have attached these to the newsletter. Please note particularly the reference to hairstyles. Some of our boys are following the trend for stepped hairstyles and this is not in keeping with school requirements. I would like to thank the staff who organised the Mother’s Day mass which was a highlight at the start of term. It was a wonderful occasion and the P&F did us proud with their morning tea. It is occasions like this that express what St Charbel’s College is all about. It is a privilege to work in such a vibrant, caring community. We hope that you will all keep free 27th June as there will be an Awards Ceremony for both the Primary and High School on that day. We look forward to seeing you there. Early Stage Coordinator - Ms Paras Luca Welcome back to Term 2. The Kindergarten students appear to be ready for a busy and fun filled term and are eager to learn. The students have settled in well to school and their new routines. They are exceeding our expectations!! This term Kindergarten will continue to develop their literacy and numeracy skills. It is wonderful to see how awe struck Kindy become with their progress in reading and writing. The students enjoyed visiting Healthy Harold. They learnt about road safety and healthy eating. Beware parents, your children are and will continue to develop an understanding of the importance of healthy food choices. So please pack a healthy lunch box, no junk food for our Kindy students. They now know better!! “We do children an enormous disservice when we assume that they cannot appreciate anything beyond nutritionally marginal, kid-targeted convenience foods. Children deserve quality nourishment.” Victoria Moran, author. 3 Stage 1 Coordinator - Ms Sue Durham Welcome back to all. I trust that everyone has come back prepared for hard work as this is a very busy term with assessments and reporting to parents taking place. Parents can assist their children at home by reading with them, to them or by listening to them read. You would really be surprised just how much 5 minutes out of your busy day can mean to a child. Show an interest and you will see improved results! The term began with a commemoration service for Anzac Day and I am always very proud of the way St Charbel’s marks such important occasions with reverence and respect. I had the opportunity to accompany the Year 11 History class and the Primary School captains to a memorial service at the War Memorial in Hyde Park in the city and it was wonderful to see our students, along with students of many schools, participating in something that has become so much a part of Australia’s history. Our photo shows the students at the War Memorial after the formal activities. Term 2 has lots in store for Years 1 and 2. Year 1 will be looking at “Workers in Our Community” and Year 2 “Identifying Us”. I hope all mums had a wonderful Mother’s Day. Again our school celebrated an important occasion in style with a beautiful Mass and a morning tea provided by the hard working P&F. Children had the opportunity to buy their mums a lovely gift at the annual Mother’s Day stall and I’m sure our mums woke up to lovely surprises on Mother’s Day. Many thanks to the P&F for their efforts in making the day such a success. I look forward to a fruitful term. It was heartening to see all children happy to be back and I am sure all teachers were happy to be back too! Stage 2 Coordinator - Mrs Mary Anton Overview of Stage 2 Term 2 Programs: English YEAR 3 Concept: Narrative Technique YEAR 4 Concept: Characterisation In Year 3, students have been encouraged to listen to, read, view and write narratives about unfamiliar experiences as well as familiar experiences. Students will be encouraged to focus particularly on sizzling starts, tightening the tension, how resolutions are developed and how dialogue is used in narrative. There is also a focus on how dialogue helps to create characters and can be used to predict what might or might not happen in different stages. In Term 2, students will be encouraged to extend their written descriptions so that they are more detailed and precise. For descriptions both written and oral, word banks will be brainstormed to encourage the use of specific vocabulary. Students will be aware that descriptions are not often “stand alone” texts but are actually part of a longer text such as a biography, a story’s setting, description of characters in a narrative or even verses in poetry. The grammar focuses are using comparing adjectives and verbs, noun groups, similes and metaphors to build up description. Maths Multiplication & Division, Fractions & Decimals, 3D, Time, Data, Position, CAPA Integrated with Science Multiplication & Division, Fractions & Decimals, Patterns & Algebra, 2D, Length and Area, Time, Data, Position, Volume & Capacity Sculpture HSIE/Science & Technology PD, H & PE ‘Music’ Unit title Sounds Great Art Appreciation: Henry Moore Unit title: Stuck On You SPORT - Dance SPORT - Dance Health - The Human Body 4 Stage 3 Coordinator - Ms Marie-Claire Hawwa Term 2, Report term is well underway. Stage 3 students have some important events this term, Year 5 have undergone their NAPLAN Testing and Year 6 will be attending the Year 6 camp at Stanwell Tops. We are very proud of the consistent effort displayed by all Year 5 students during the NAPLAN testing and we have no doubt they will achieve great results. Year 6 camp is a great opportunity for students to challenge themselves and face their fears. They will retreat from their usual life to become responsible and develop lifelong friends. This is a great emotional transition of preparing the students for High School. In Science the Year 6 students have been experimenting and investigating changes in state of liquids, solids and gases and whether or not they are reversible. The SRC students have been working tirelessly to maintain their roles and have been displaying great maturity and responsibility. On behalf of the Stage 3 teachers and myself, we look forward to meeting with each of you to discuss your child’s progress towards the end of this Term. REC Primary - Mrs Mary Wells Giving witness to the faith is an every day event at St. Charbel’s College, however, this reached a new dimension at our Mass of New Sunday. Many of our teaching staff were featured in the reflection of the Gospel. Congratulations to all the team who took part. Reconciliation is high on the list of study for students in Grade Two. The program is long and in depth and has the support of our Chaplain and RE Department. Attendance at Sunday Mass, with the family attending together, is a wonderful way to help students grow in faith. Students must successfully complete the program to qualify for their First Reconciliation, so we request that parents of students this age consider this if they are planning to go overseas during this time. Missing out would mean that they have to join the Parish students for Reconciliation. The same is said for those who will begin to prepare for their First Holy Communion. Please pray for these little ones who will meet our Saviour in the Sacraments. A new HOMEWORK CLUB in MATHEMATICS will be running every Tuesday & Friday mornings Come along to these sessions if you wish to get some extra assistance with your homework All students of all years are welcome to attend. It was an unbelievable experience that has changed the lives of every single person who was present, students and staff alike. We participated in adventurous activities including high ropes, abseiling and a 12m high obstacle course that brought out the best in everyone and truly highlighted how talented and unique everyone is and we all learned to appreciate each other’s skills. We also shared in very moving spiritual activities that brought everyone together in ways we never thought were possible. We conquered fears and learned to forgive. We learned to draw out the good things in others and in ourselves. We sang together, prayed together, laughed together and cried together. We came out of this experience better people and we came out a family. We formed bonds and strengthened relationships that will, without a doubt, exceed the boundaries of time. The special moments we had during the retreat will forever be held dear to our hearts and we are immensely grateful to have experienced such an unforgettable retreat. They can be purchased ONLY from the Accounts Office Primary PE Teacher - Miss Catherine Zalloua This term has started off with a bang, as students have been participating in dance for co-curricular sport, rugby league for AASC, and Jump Rope for Heart fundraising and skipping. The children are having a great time dancing away and I find myself joining in with the fun! They have learnt some dances including Bollywood and Hip Hop going by the names of Around the World, AM to PM and even Gangnam style to warm up! Children are still welcome to join afternoon sports, just come and see me at the sports room to get a permission note. Lastly, some children are showing great enthusiasm and initiative in the event to raise money for Jump Rope for Heart. This is a great cause and I am looking forward to the end result! I encourage the students involvement in future gala days and events, as there will be many more to get involved in!! On Friday the 16th of May the Primary School had their Jump Off day for Jump Rope for Heart. On this day all Primary and Year 10 students, were involved in skipping activities at recess and lunch to promote physical activity and living a healthy and active life. Students were asked to wear a red shirt to support this foundation and at assembly in the morning, it was a sea of red, so fantastic to see! A short circuit of six stations was set up in the green area where Year 10 students led the activities at each station. This gave the younger students the opportunity to learn new skills and to give skipping a go, even if they did not know how to do it! I was impressed with the students’ involvement and enthusiasm; it was definitely contagious as some of the teachers were getting involved as well and helping out. Some skills that students learnt were criss cross, two in, hopping, skipping in a long rope, double dutch and triangle skipping. The Year 10 students were fantastic mentors to the Primary kids as they helped them with developing their skills and took the time to teach students to understand the basic skip so they could do it and get involved. The environment created was very friendly and supportive which all students K-6, had the opportunity to be part of. I am very proud of the way the Primary students behaved, as they listened to the Year 10 students and were happily playing with everybody. Thank you to all the staff and students who supported this great cause through donating money or participating. It was a fantastic event!. Exemption From School As we get closer to the July break, we would like to bring to your attention the Changes to Student Leave in NSW. Changes to legislation in NSW have resulted in parents needing to apply for an ‘Exemption from Schooling Certificate/s’ when a child will be absent from school for more than 15 school days. This is a legal obligation for parents. Applications for more than 50 school days leave in one school year cannot be granted by the Principal but need to be sent by the College to the Minister for Education’s delegate. Exemption application forms and guidelines are available from the Administration Office. So, if you are planning on taking your family overseas for an extended period of time, please ensure that you pick up a form. On this note, we would like to point out that it is not recommended that a child misses an excessive number of school days as they will be missing out on valuable teaching time which might result in them falling behind in their learning. 8 Ancient and Modern History European Tour for April 2015 An Ancient and Modern History study tour to Europe is being offered to students in Years 10, 11 and 12 in 2015. Information for Parents/Carers Schools across Australia are taking part in a new national data collection on school students with disability. The data collection is being introduced in stages over three years, and started in 2013. From 2015, this information will be collected in every school across Australia, every year. All Australian governments have agreed to this. WHAT IS THE BENEFIT FOR MY CHILD? All Australian governments agree that every child in an Australian school should have a high quality education. It shouldn’t matter what the individual child’s circumstances are – every child should have the same opportunity to succeed at school. disability. WHAT ARE SCHOOLS REQUIRED TO DO? Every school in Australia is likely to have a student with disability at some point. Schools need to be able to support students with disability by removing any obstacles for them to participate in their education. By law, schools are required to make reasonable adjustments where needed to assist students with disability. These responsibilities are outlined in the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005. This means that schools need to talk to the student and/or their parent/carer about reasonable adjustments. These are things the schools do now and this won’t change. The aim of this new data collection is to have better information about school students with disability in Australia. The new data collection will record students who have been identified by a school team as meeting the definition of disability under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and provided with an adjustment. Better information about school students with disability will help teachers, principals and education authorities to support students with disability to take part in school on the same basis as students without disability. WHAT IS AN ADJUSTMENT? WHY IS THIS DATA BEING COLLECTED? There is nothing new about schools collecting information about students with disability – in fact, schools have had to do this by law for some time. But the type of information currently collected varies between each state and territory. An adjustment is a measure or action taken to help a student with disability participate in education on the same basis as other students. Adjustments can be made across the whole school setting (like ramps into classrooms), in the classroom and at an individual student level (like extra tuition for a student with a learning difficulty). With the new data collection, every school in Australia will use the same method to collect this information – that is, a government school in suburban Sydney will collect and report data in the same way as a Catholic school in country Victoria and an independent school in the Northern Territory. The information provided through this new national data collection will enable all Australian governments to better target support and resources to benefit students with disability. It will help to put the right supports in place for students with disability so that they have the same opportunities for a high quality education as students without a 12 WHAT INFORMATION WILL BE COLLECTED?
