Demonstrations will be scheduled for the two days and a couple print give-a-ways is always an added attraction. The committee had some discus- Sue Hammersmark - Red Lodge sion and thought the idea would be good for BAA to have added visibility and would be another venue for our members to show art work. Members can submit (2) art work pieces, labeled with name, title and sales price, with a $5.00 entry fee for each piece. The cost of the entry fee would go to the Babcock Arcade Gallery, as Victoria is not charging a commission on sales. This event would also be a fundraiser to benefit our‘ Images Art Grant‘. Sales split would be 80% to artists, 20% to fundraiser. Some entertainment is planned and local vendors will participate. We will need members to help hang and be present during the Art Walk hours of 5:00-9:00. Please let us know by Oct. 4th or ASAP if you have interest in this show, as space is limited and we can plan accordingly. Participation by members and artwork displayed was down to 53, compared to 63 last year. A total of 29 members participated and sales totaled $985.00. A portion has been allocated to our Images Art Grant. Congrats to Jeanine Deiling, Elliott Eaton, Mary Knapp, & Jeannette Magstadt for artwork sales. This auction is a great show for community involvement, but felt that attendance was down, but a definite plus, was the addition of the Youth Symphony for entertainment. Lots of positive comments. A few of the members asked to take their artwork from the exhibit after the auction, and felt the length of time was too long and should be limited to the month of May ONLY. The auction is once again scheduled for the May Art Walk, ‘2012. Kennedy, Jr., 89, died June 11, 2011, at Billings Health and Rehabilitation. He was born on April 17, 1922, in Billings to Michael J., Sr. and Leta Kennedy. He graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1940. He served in the Air Force during WWII. On June 16, 1951, he married Ailene Laulo in Fort Benton. They moved to Chicago where Mike received his formal art training at the American Academy of Art and worked in the art departments of Montgomery Ward and Spiegel catalogs. Mike and Ailene moved back to Billings where he worked at Billings Neon, Reporter Printing and retired from Trott Printing Company in 1984. Mike was a true public servant and served on the City Council for 2-1/2 terms, the Planning Commission, City Traffic Commission, Billings Housing Authority, Airport Commission and Montana Board of Housing. Mike was a talented artist and member of the Billings Art Association. Several of his paintings are scattered throughout Billings, the state of Montana and Juneau, Alaska. He also won several blue ribbons for his paintings at the fair and won two or three trophies and several honorable mentions for The Billings Gazette Christmas display contests. Mike was a past Grand Knight and a member of 4th Degree for the Knights of Columbus. He also served as an Elks officer for over 30 years. CALL FOR ACTION!!!! At the present time there are workshops available for watercolor artists which bring in Nationally know art instructors. There are no regularly scheduled workshops for oil or pastel artists. The BAA is willing to help an interested group of members initiate regularly scheduled workshops catering to oil and pastel artists. This would require a minimum of 3 people to form a committee for the purpose of planning and arranging the workshops. If you would like to see this program develop, volunteer to start the planning committee. Contact any BAA steering committee member and tell them you are interested. SPEAKERS AND DEMONSTRATIONS The board needs someone to schedule speakers and /or demonstrations. There are many local artists around Billings who would be willing to share their art and we just need a committee to organize this. Let a member of the board know if you would be on this committee. Montana Artists Refuge Dear Friends, It is with great sadness that the Montana Artists Refuge announces its official closing October 1, 2011. Economic times do not permit us to continue. The original founders of the Montana Artists Refuge and current board and staff would like to thank the literally hundreds of volunteers, advisers, past board and staff, friends, unfailing Basin-area community supporters, donors large and small, business sponsors and of course the artists. This wealth of participation made the Refuge the vibrant institution it has been. To the multitude that gave so generously: Bravo! Over the last 18 years, the Refuge has seen over 300 artists, from a variety of disciplines and from all corners of the globe, spend productive and creative time here in our little community. We trust that most of them found something unique in the experience. The artists brought their passion for art and shared it with the larger community through poetry readings, exhibitions of sculpture, painting and fabric art, concerts, the lively jazz brunch, performance pieces, theater workshops, and dance concerts. The Refuge provided thousands of people the best food, fun and art experiences The original founders began with nothing more than space, vision and a passionate belief that art is important, in fact vital. With that beginning, and through the participation of all MAR supporters through the years, without question the Montana Artists Refuge has contributed both to the vibrancy of the arts in Montana and a special vitality to our small community of Basin.
