A Newsletter for the Artists and Writers of the Billings Arts Association - Sharing Our Creativity & Inspiration
BILLINGS ARTS ASSOCIATION
www.BillingsArts Association.com
Dear Billings Arts Association members,
We had an excellent and productive Board meeting yesterday. It’s amazing how much we can do in
an hour and 20 min.
It has become apparent that we broaden our focus
in the community-scape to include the City and County
Councils ~ that we develop the official sanctions to
provide our arts community with the official support and reserve that we
have over the many years somehow neglected to harvest.
The old Bob Dylan tune “it’s a political world” is so very true.
We, on the board, ask for your input – in 1. whom do we know
within the city and county officials that are currently arts supporters? And
2. if you would be interested in being a representative from our Arts community to the City and County councils?
In order for us to elevate the scope of our endeavors and to be eligible for the various packages of ‘stimulus’ funding and municipal recognition we need to appropriate BAA as the Official Arts Community Organization.
We will be succoring the in-put and advice of our local leaders as
we bring BAA to it’s full fruition. I trust that you will welcome this and look
forward to hearing from you on this or any of the events we have lined up
in this superb BAA newsletter.
Thank you, William Crain
(Arlynn Fishbaugh, Montana Arts Council will be in
Billings, Saturday September 19th and will meet with
BAA members. Time and Place to be decided…..)

BAA FALL SHOW………………….
We have not been able to find a location for our
regular Fall Show since West Park Plaza is no longer
available. We are limited, if it is not a place that has
a full time attendant we would have to man it. A
number of our members do not like to drive down
town and try to find a parking place to sit an exhibit.
Therefore, this year, we elected to exhibit 1 piece
each at Sandstone Gallery during the month of October. There is an Artwalk that month and a reception will be held during the Artwalk celebrating two
members of Sandstone Gallery and the BAA exhibit.
There is also a Petapalooza Festival—Saturday Oct. 17 from 11 to 3. It
is a celebration of pets and their people sponsored by the Billings Cultural Partners. The street in front of
the Gallery will be closed and many
people will be down town with their pets. If anyone
would like to set up and draw their pet in front of the
gallery during the festival you may do that. Entry fee
is $5 and the exhibit will be juried and ribbons given
to the winners. For more information call Sue Hammersmark
or Madelein Bladow
Petroleum Club
Karen McBride is still trying to set up
a time and date to have a exhibit at the
Petroleum Club. More information to follow if we can confirm and schedule.
UPDATES
BAA MAY BANQUET
The May Banquet was held May 7 at the Elks club. We
were a little disappointed by the turn out. The meal
was excellent and the music entertaining and enjoyable. Possibly the date didn’t work out for some of our
members.
GENERAL MEETINGS
We are hoping to engage more speakers and demonstrators for our meetings but they are not going to want
to put the effort into a presentation unless they have
enough people attend to make it worth their while.
We have excellent participation for exhibiting art work
so help us out for our meetings.
Guests enjoy the
CTA Exhibit.
NEW TREASURER
A big Thank you and a welcome aboard
Eva Morganthaler for stepping up and
taking the treasurer’s position. Linda
Duncan has done a great job for the last
9 years plus and has earned a rest. A
big Thank you to both Linda and Eva….
—PAINTOUTS—
Linda Duncan was kind enough to plan a
paintout and members were notified by e-mail.
However no one showed up much to Linda’s
disappointment. Please call ahead when something is scheduled so the organizer knows
whether to continue or not.
—ZOO—
No one was evidently interested in the Geranium Fest at the ZOO either so we need some
feed back on what you would like to see BAA
organize. Barb Butler was the
organizer for this.

CTA Engineers – Silent Auction
Our annual Silent Auction was held during the May 1st Artwalk and extended through July. Once again, we had great
participation from our members. The auction featured over 60
pieces of artwork, representative of 20 artists. This year’s
sales totaled $525.00 with 25% to our “School Art Grant Program”, and 75% to the artists. The atmosphere of the economy can be attributed to sale results. We heard several comments from individuals, that at this time, just couldn’t afford a
luxury purchase of artwork.
Thanks to our members who participated and our efforts
resulted in positive support for our fundraiser.
Congrats to artists who sold artwork: LaVonne RiceGordon, Mary Knapp, Leo Olson, Lou Taylor, Victoria Wetsch.
CTA Engineers has scheduled BAA Silent Auction for
‘Artwalk’ May 7, 2010.

BILLINGS ARTS ASSOCIATION MEETING – August 27, 2009
SANDSTONE GALLERY
Meeting of the Billings Arts Association Board held on August
27, 2009 at Sandstone Gallery @ 10:00.
Board Members Present: William Crain, Sue Hammersmark,
Linda Duncan, Karen McBride, Eva Mergenthaler, Lana Bittner,
and guest, Carol Hartmann, Executive Director of Fresno, Calif.,
Arts Council
William opened meeting with a welcome to Eva Morganthaler, our new Treasurer, and a thank-you to Linda Duncan for
her many years of dedicated service to BAA, as Treasurer.
Treasurer’s Report
Eva gave the treasurer’s report that reflected an amount of
$554.00 collected from our auction in May at the CTA Engineers
Bldg. This amount was down considerably from our 1st auction in
‘2009, with almost $3,000.00 in sales. She also reported that we
have over $3,508.72 in our checking account and the Certificate of
Deposit in the amount of $1,000.00 and is accruing quarterly interest at a rate of over 4%. Board agreed to keep this CD intact, and
not deposit to checking account at this time. Membership is now
at approximately 152.
The contest to design a new “Logo” for BAA resulted in no entries
from our members.
Linda mentioned that Jacque Kittson was working on redesigning a new membership card.
Sue is compiling information for the newsletter on future shows in
September and October and is working on sending out by first of
next week( Sept.1st,2nd)
CARBON COUNTY ARTS GUILD
SEPTEMBER
Sep 1-30: Gary Larson & Paulette Kucera Exhibit. Larson’s Flemishstyle painting and Kucera’s modern glass will take center stage in the
Main Depot Gallery for September. The exhibit is free and open to all
during normal Art’s Guild hours. For more information, call the Guild
in Red Lodge at (406) 446-1370.
Sep 1-15: Beartooth Plein Air Society Exhibit. The second
annual Beartooth Plein Air Society Show of recent works began on
Monday, August 17th at the Carbon County Arts Guild in Red Lodge
and will continue through mid-September. The Beartooth Plein Air
Society was started by The Painted Ladies as a way to encourage
everyone, at all levels, to try their hand at painting out in nature. The
core group hopes to pass along their enthusiasm and love of plein air
painting and the endeavor has been a great success. For more information about the Beartooth Plein Air Society, call Dorci at (406) 4461490. For more information about the exhibit, call the Arts Guild at
(406) 446-1370. Exhibit is free and open during normal Arts Guild
hours.
Sep 4: Artists’ Reception. Meet artists Gary Larson and
Paulette Kucera in this early evening, opening night reception. Larson
and Kucera have work on display this month in the Guild’s Main Gallery. The reception is free and open to everyone. 4-7 pm with artists’
comments at 5 pm. For more information, call the Arts Guild in Red
Lodge at (406) 446-1370.
Art Grant
Sue also reported that BAA awarded the Boys & Girls Club $250.00 for
their “Tiles for Mentors Program” from our School Art Grant in June.
Critique/ CTA Silent Auction
Lana gave a summary of some observations on the CTA Silent Auction
during the art walk on May 1st. Once again, participation from our members was excellent. Extending the show did not result in additional
sales. Linda, and Karen also thought that art walk activity was down
due to the economy. Additional comments and observations will be
noted in our next newsletter.
Women’s Detention Center
William has been in contact with Women’s Detention Center on the art
classes that he is organizing, along with Linda Duncan, Madelein
Bladow, Sue Hammersmark as assistants with this project. The target
dates have not yet been scheduled, and looking for someone to document - film – Inmates interested total around forty.
Carol Hartman, an invited guest, shared her expertise on writing
grants for success and how they apply to ‘Art Based Projects”.
Discussion on possibilities where to have our General Meeting, date &
type of program, etc. was discussed. Sue mentioned that the Library
has an area that we could use, and with no charge. She will make the
contact.
Sandstone Gallery will host the BAA October Show with a limit of one
painting/artist with a entry fee of $5.00Art will be juried.
Note: William would like to explore the possibility of having a booth at
the Fair sponsored by BAA, Karen made motion to inquire and Sue
seconded. The Fine Arts Bldg, Cedar Hall, was recommended.
Karen will also contact the Petroleum Club for future shows.

Three of Clyde Apsevig’s paintings are on display
at the YAM until January from Vince Larson’s collection. The paintings are AWESOME and If you are an
oil painter these are a must see.
The current show at the museum includes more representational pieces than usual from Barbizon French

and lots of other pieces that are more realistic. This
might be a good time for our members to pay a visit to
