These opportunities were approached based upon predicted areas of growth and after listening to supporters and program participants. This annual report briefly describes project outcomes, recognizes volunteers and donors, and outlines the financial health of the organization. Questions and comments are always welcome. For the first time, the WCI held a 2-day Harvest Celebration in October that attracted over 400 visitors. The demonstrations, garden tours, plethora of beautifully displayed produce, live music, games and perfect fall weather made the event a great culmination of another successful year. Many thanks to our wonderful staff and the public for your support and interest. Groups attending one of the Hearts & Homes Historic Teas during the year included a bridal shower, Questers, and a book club. Des Moines Senior College contracted for two programs just for its members. Thursday night Food for Thought Dinners at the Wallace House attracted more than 750 diners in 2015, thanks in part to feature stories in dsm magazine, the Des Moines Register, and Cityview magazine. this number is a 7% increase from 2014. “Having an organization like The Wallace Centers of Iowa to bring these conversations to the table is important and challenges our community to think about the food we are eating.” —Greg Van Den Berghe Senior Marketing & Community Relations Specialist Whole Foods West Des Moines grow COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE (CSA) FARM APPRENTICES DIRECT PRODUCE SALES The garden continues to flourish under Mosa Shayan’s sustainable and thoughtful care. WCI’s Community Supported Agriculture program joined 140 subscribers in sharing the risk and bounty of the growing season by purchasing a farm share. Farm staff added a 4-week Winter Share to the Spring, Summer and Fall options, extending the CSA program to 31 weeks of the year. In addition, a special Thanksgiving produce box was offered to customers. This year, subscribers selected and bagged their weekly produce instead of getting a prepacked box. 2015 subscriptions met or exceeded initial projections. 90% of survey respondents rated the CSA as “awesome” or “better than most”. Two Farm Apprentices seeking practical experience in fruit and vegetable production spent weeks with WCI, learning organic farming practices and the specifics of produce production such as preparing plant beds, weed and insect management, cover crops and farmers market sales. WCI continues to work with local food distribution company FarmTable Delivery to expand produce sales to area restaurants, grocery stores, and institutions. FarmTable Delivery works specifically with small and mid-sized producers who have a commitment to high quality standards including certified organic, practicing organic and chemical-free. learn REAL FOOD CAMP “I would recommend the camp to kids with an interest in healthy living, agriculture and pizza!”—Eleanor Real Food Camp hosted three teens in 2015 for a learning experience focused on all aspects of food. Campers took part in team building activies, hands-on learning, meal preparation, physical activity, and discussion. A service project at a local food pantry helped develop leadership and community service skills. One student reported, “We walked through a wildlife and watershed area and learned about water. A hunt through the grocery store taught us about local foods. We looked at a map to see where food is shipped from. We hauled onions at the food pantry.” learn CULINARY CLASSES DIALOGUE DINNERS CIVILITY & LEADERSHIP LUNCHES The number of Culinary Classes increased 50% to accommodate requests from private groups such as Des Moines’ Senior College, business interns and others wanting a chance to learn cooking techniques from Chef Katie Porter. The topic of water evolved into a Dialogue Dinner series with in-depth conversations about the future of Iowa’s water. More than 100 people from all walks of life attended one of the discussions. These were held at the Wallace House, the Country Life Center and White Rock Conservancy in Coon Rapids, Iowa. A new Leadership and Civility lunch series at the Wallace House offered insight on effective leadership and how civility practices can lead to more sustainable outcomes. Many sessions were full, with 115 people attending one or more lunches. Program speakers included Tabby Hinderaker of Purposeful Growth, Kevin Pokorny of Pokorny Consulting, Aubrey Alvarez of Eat Greater Des Moines; Bill Stowe from Des Moines Water Works; Donna Red Wing, One Iowa and Bob Vander Plaats, The Family Leader; and Callista Gould, Culture & Manners Institute. give Machine Shed cONSTRUCTION Machine Shed & Capital Project Donors Finally! The machine shed at the Country Life Center stands complete at the north end of the garden. All of the farm equipment can now be secured overnight and stored when not in use. And just as important for the long-term care of WCI’s machinery, staff now have a place for regular maintenance and needed repairs. Quality Structures, Inc., with several locations in southwest Iowa, constructed the building. “The shed was a necessary addition to the farm as we continue to expand.” —Mosa Shayan Farm Programs Manager Donors Anonymous Anonymous Adair County Rural Electric Co-op Co Bank Iowa State Savings Bank Mary Jensen (in memory of Ray Jensen) Bob and Patti Jester Ed & Gretchen Johnson Willard Olesen Diane and Robert Murphy Rick & Minoo Spellerberg Ann Taylor & Mike Gaul David Wallace Jeff and Elizabeth Wallace Bob and Diane Weiland give Owen J. & Doris Jean Newlin Riley Family Fund Earl & Susan Rogers Willard & Susie Olesen Sharon Glickman Penn Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area Diane & Bob Weiland Whole Foods Market Annual Fund Donors $10,000 and above Anonymous Bessemer National Gift Fund David & Deborah Douglas Fleming Family Charitable Fund Fleming Family Foundation State of Iowa Historic Tax Credits David Wallace Wallace Genetic Foundation Wallace Global Fund $5,000 to $9,999 Anonymous Jeff & Elizabeth Wallace $1,000 to $4,999 Nicholas & Stephanie Devereux Farm Credit Services First National Bank Greenfield Community Development Christine & John Halbrook Jay Howe Iowa State Savings Bank Marion & Nancy James $500 to $999 Doug Burns Gayle & Timothy DeVries Bob & Patricia Jester Jan & Karl Knock Jim & Linda Miller Ann Taylor & Mike Gaul West Bancorporation Foundation $100 to $499 Eileen Armstrong Charles & Libby Becker Blue River Hybrids Arthur Boyer JoAnn Campney & Sue Terry Martha Carr Annette Chance Deb Copeland & Jeremy Phillips Joy Corning Andrew & Betty Corty Richard Deming Jordan Dye Greg & Mary Ellison Steve & Ellen Elmore Chuck & Marilyn Farr Anne Fleming & Bill Wright Jim & Allison Fleming Rob & Susan Fleming Corneila & Jan Flora Ricci & Sue Frambach Liz Garst Linda & Dave Gobberdiehl LaVon & Craig Griffieon Rich & Deb Hall Neil & Darlene Harl Sara Hill Dave & Trudy Hurd Jim & Barb Kalbach Anne Kindwell Richard & Kathleen Kirkendall Jet & Allen Kofoot - in memory of Katie Kofoot Caroline Levine Matt Liebman John & Dianne Liepa Duane & Donna Miller Joan Myers Mark & Janet Rosenbury Polly Ruth, Ruth Construction Marlene Schildberg Leon & Judy Schwartz Jennifer & Marty Smith Gordon Smith James & Elizabeth Stansberry Mathilde Brown Swanson Rod & Eileen Swoboda Brian & Jane Turner Alex & Linnea Treitler James & Holynn Wallace William & Sara Wallace Fritz Wehrenberg & Jennie LeGates Delon & Shirley Weuve Dennis & Kristi Woodruff Sumner & Karen Worth Alvie & Katherine Young Brian Zachary & Jean Weishaar give Annual Fund Donors, continued $1 to $99 Adair County Soil & Water Conservation District John & Christine Augustine Jamie Beauchamp Ivan & Carol Ashby Bendorf Sharon Bennett Chris Boone Elizabeth & Scott Brennan Deanne & Steve Bryce The Capecchi Family Lois Frederick Wes & Marilyn Geidel Barbara Graham Bryan Hall & Patricia Barry Cecil & Pat Hoffman Hedy & Michael Hustedde Richard Joens & Scott Smith Marlin Marckmann Keith & Sharon Mensing Lynn & Garry Miller Joshua Nelson Patty Parrish Steven Person Mary Powell Questers, Wallace Chapter Warren & Mary Riedesel Michelle Roberts Paula & Claude Sampson Yvonne Schildberg Phil & Diana Sickles Linda Sidey Tom Smull & Liz Gilman Janna Steed Arlene Sweet John C. & Wanda Wallace Doug & Jenice Wallace Connie Lee & Jim Whalen Tom & Mary Jo Williams Carol Woolsley Kent Zimmerman In-Kind Cindy Baldogo Amy Bice Jason & Amy Boyer Steve Campbell Dot Crosby Emily Floyd Sue Ford James Fox, Fox Trust Judy Giles Suzanne Harter Carla Herling Jay Howe IoWeb Publishing Deb Irving Betsy Keenan Steve Kerns Karla King Lissa Kleven Bob Kling Donna Miller Connie Minto Howard Montgomery Jan & Greg Moore Sheila O’Riley Katie Porter Pat Randol, Randol Honey Farm Lisa Swanson Ann Taylor & Mike Gaul Wallace’s Farmer Diane & Bob Weiland give VOLUNTEERS WCI is fortunate to have a legion of volunteers who are ready, willing, and able to help.
