MESSAGE FROM
THE BOARD
MISSION
The Future Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit
501(c)(3) corporation founded in July 2004 to
advance the mission and vision of Wallace State
Community College. The Foundation promotes
equity, accessibility and excellence in education.
We believe that education should be attainable
by all, that it is vital to our community, and that
the College's employees and resources determine
the quality of service we provide to students and
the community.
The mission of the Future Foundation, Inc.
is to support the advancement of Wallace
State Community College’s vision and
mission by providing community members
opportunities for charitable giving and
service.
One of the Foundation's most important goals is
to provide scholarships to students whose
educational needs cannot be met by their current
resources. The Foundation raised more than
$29,000 at its first luncheon auction, entirely for
scholarships. To date, more than 18 scholarships
have been funded from this event alone.
Evelyn Burrow established the Foundation's first
$1 million endowed scholarship through her gift
of an irrevocable charitable remainder trust.
Scholarships have also been established to honor
certain individuals and to support students
engaged in specific areas of study.
Through philanthropic giving, no matter the size
or sum, you are making an investment in the
future of our students, the economic development
of the region and in Wallace State Community
College as we become a become a distinctively
world class, nationally-recognized, and
technologically-advanced learning College that
effectively serves the educational, cultural and
social needs of our community.
Because Wallace State is a state-assisted
institution, we rely increasingly on contributions
to reach our vision and better serve our students.
Become a partner in our success. Donations may
be made to The Future Foundation, Inc. at P.O.
Box 568, Hanceville, Alabama 35077. For more

WALLACE STATE FUTURE FOUNDATION AUCTION
RAISES $29,000 FOR SCHOLARSHIPS
The Wallace State Future Foundation raised more
than $29,000 for scholarships at its annual
luncheon auction on July 21. That amount
exceeded the organization’s goal of $25,000.
“I’m very, very pleased with the results,” Wallace
State President Vicki Hawsey said. “We exceeded
our goals. Anytime a private fundraising effort such
as this exceeds its goal, that’s something to be
extremely proud of. We are grateful to our board,
VIP committee and community members who
made this possible.”
Wallace State President Dr. Vicki Hawsey welcomes the crowd to
Thursday’s Future Foundation Luncheon Auction.
Proceeds from the event will go solely to provide
scholarships for Wallace State students.
A pound cake made by Gracie Grissom was the top
selling item auctioned, going for $1,050. A 1995
Chevy Cavalier donated by Harry Bivins Used
Cars sold for $1,900. Two seven-day vacations in
Gatlinburg, Tenn., from American Proteins went
for $800 apiece.
A full house at Wallace State Future Foundation’s first luncheon
auction raised more than $29,000 for scholarships.
Other items auctioned included dinner for two at
Frank Stitt’s newest restaurant Chez Fonfon, a
bracelet from Ed White Jewelers, Iroko spa
package, and decorative cross from Southern
Accents. A HealthFit fitness package, seven-day
vacation from Midnight Properties, 27-inch TV
from Wal-Mart Distribution Center, outdoor
furniture from Lowe’s, trips, art and home
furnishings were just a few of the items donated
from other community members and friends of the
College.
In all, 52 local businesses and individuals donated

WALLACE STATE BREAKS GROUND ON
Wallace State Community College broke ground on
its new Burrow Center for the Fine and Performing
Arts on August 29. The building, which will become
the 42nd building on Wallace State’s expansive 214acre campus, will be located on the front of campus
in the quadrant bordered by Highway 31 and College
Drive. The Center is expected to open in April
2007.
Chancellor of the Alabama College System Roy Johnson, Wallace
State President Vicki Hawsey, and Congressman Robert Aderholt.
The Burrow Center will house a $9.5 million
collection of fine art donated to the College by
Evelyn Burrow last year as well as a 300-seat theater,
200-seat recital hall, numerous classrooms and
practice areas, art studios and faculty offices.
This addition comes during the celebration of
Wallace State’s 40th anniversary year. In her
remarks at the groundbreaking Hawsey said,
“Wallace State celebrates 40 years of excellence, 40
years of progress, 40 years of change. Change occurs
today as we proactively pursue our vision to be a
world class institution that effectively serves the
educational and cultural needs of our students and
our community.”

The Burrow Center for the Fine and Performing Arts
is named for Ottis and Evelyn Burrow. The late Ottis
Burrow was instrumental in the selection of
Hanceville as the site of the George C. Wallace
Trade School of Cullman County, now known as
Wallace State Community College. His wife Evelyn
Burrow donated their museum collection to the
College last year.
Congressman Robert Aderholt, Chancellor of the
Alabama College System Roy Johnson, Hanceville
Mayor Katie Whitley, former First Lady of Alabama
Jamelle Folsom and Commissioner George Wallace, Jr.
were among the dignitaries present at the groundbreaking ceremony. Members of the Cullman and
Blount County legislative delegations, including Sen.
Zeb Little, Rep. Neal Morrison, Rep. Ron Grantland,
Rep. Jeremy Oden, and Rep. Elwyn Thomas were also
present along with a host of community members,
faculty, students and friends of the College.
FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
“The Burrow Center will provide opportunities for
students and the community to engage in culture in
new and exciting ways,” said Congressman Robert
Aderholt, emphasizing the importance of study of
the arts and literature in the development of a wellrounded individual.
“This first class facility will allow students to grow to
be everything they can be,” said Chancellor Roy
Johnson. “This college stands as a leader in the
Alabama College System. The Burrow Center will
help ensure that that leadership continues and that
Mrs. Burrow’s legacy lives for generations to come,”
he said.
