2013 Annual Report - Wayne County Chamber of Commerce
2013
Over 100 years Strong
The Wayne County Chamber of Commerce is a membership-based nonprofit organization comprised of business and professional
persons who have joined together for the purpose of promoting the civic and economic progress of our community. The Chamber
serves more than 500 businesses and organizations that collectively employ more than 35,000 local residents. The Chamber is
charged with two primary functions: (1) to be the leading voice for the business community, translating group thinking by its
members into action, and (2) to provide leadership in solving community problems and enhancing the quality of life throughout
Wayne County.
The Chamber is an advocate for its members; it is not a government entity. Governance and policy-making responsibilities are vested
in the Board of Directors which is composed of up to 25 local business leaders. The Chairman presides over all Board of Directors and
Executive Committee meetings.
The Chamber enjoys many collaborative partnerships with key organizations,
including the following:
 The Wayne Charitable Partnership, Inc., the Chamber’s 501(c)3 “incubator” for
nonprofit start-ups such as Literacy Connections, Wayne County Committee for
Green Schools, and Wayne County Long-Term Recovery.
 The Wayne Business and Industry Center at Wayne Community College providing
educational opportunities for small businesses.
 The Wayne County Development Alliance promoting business and industry in
Wayne County.
 The Goldsboro-Wayne County Visitor Center – part of the Travel and Tourism
Division of the City of Goldsboro – which is housed in the Chamber building.

2013 Chamber Board Chairman
It has been said that in today’s world if you continue doing things the same way you did a few years ago,
you are probably doing it wrong. The speed with which changes occur is unprecedented in our society; the
Chamber is no exception to this phenomenon. It would be difficult to argue that the Wayne County
Chamber of Commerce lacks for change. 2013 marked another year of change, transition, stabilization, and growth. As members, you have
witnessed and experienced the positive successes that the Chamber’s leadership made as they continued to develop more value for
Chamber members.
We all owe our thanks and gratitude to those who helped fill the leadership gap during the early months of 2013, and to the Search
Committee for selecting our new Chamber president, who has accomplished remarkable successes in her brief time with us. Clearly, the
Chamber has a management and staff team who are enthusiastic and skilled at inspiring continued successes and growth. A new board
member recently commented that the board’s whole demeanor has changed since he last served on the board, attributed mostly to our
outstanding staff and the limitless tasks they accomplish in an energetic, professional, and competent fashion.
Many thanks to the Chamber’s board, committee chairs, volunteers, and leaders who have selflessly given countless hours to further the
economic growth of our Wayne County businesses and the ongoing improvements in the daily lives of our community. With the momentum
this strong, the future is bright.

“For me, the true strength of the
Chamber is the people—
Smart and engaged members,
volunteers and staff.”
~Kate Daniels, Chamber President
I have a strong sense of gratitude to the many people who have
provided leadership over the years to the Wayne County Chamber, including the Board of Directors, committee members and most
importantly, our members. For over 100 years, the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce has remained a champion for a strong local economy
for business.
Our commitment to building a stronger community and economy
remains steady. As home to the Military Affairs Committee, Wayne
Education Network, Governmental Affairs Committee, Small Business
Advisory Council, Young Professionals and Leadership Wayne, the
Chamber’s focus spans all areas that make Wayne County the absolute
best place to call home. Serving over 500 business members, the
Chamber is committed to the concept that there is enormous strength in
unity and great benefit to be gained by the exchange of information and
ideas.
The Chamber is the sum of all 532 members and that strength makes
your Chamber the single most powerful voice for the business
community. While each member’s involvement and engagement may
vary, the participation of each business is essential to the continued
success. I challenge every member to participate in at least one
Chamber activity each month. I’m confident you will realize positive
return on investment.
Since coming on board in May of 2013, we have celebrated 10 ribbon
cuttings, welcomed 72 new members, celebrated a record Total
Resource Campaign and increased attendance for all Chamber events. I
am thankful for the incredible leadership of the Board of Directors and
the phenomenal staff. I am confident 2014 will prove to be a
record year as we ensure that our members are the forefront of every success we make.
The Chamber employs four full-time staff and two part-time
employees. The staff is integral in the implementation and
execution of all Chamber programs and events, providing
full administrative, marketing, member services, and
financial services support for members, initiatives and
committees.
