Chamber Membership ROI
National studies reveal membership in a local chamber of commerce can significantly boost a business’s
image among consumers, as well as among other businesses. In a scientific survey of two thousand U.S.
adults, The Schapiro Group, an Atlanta-based strategic consulting firm, found positive perceptions of
chamber members in a number of areas, including overall favorability, consumer awareness and
reputation, and likelihood of future patronage.
The study, showed that when respondents were
told that a particular small business was a member
of its local chamber, they were 44 percent more
likely to rate it favorably than study respondents
who were not told of the chamber affiliation.
Respondents were also 63 percent more likely to
want to purchase goods or services from a small
business that is a chamber member.

“We discovered that informing someone about a company’s chamber membership opens the door to
substantial increases in positive perceptions of that business,” said Alex Trouteaud, Ph.D., senior
strategist for The Schapiro Group. “There clearly is a feeling by our respondents that chamber
membership is synonymous with quality and desirability.”

To tap into this reservoir of goodwill, a small business should not only join the local chamber of
commerce and participate, but also make sure consumers and other businesses are aware of that
chamber affiliation. The positive impact of perceived chamber membership is felt by big businesses, too.
For example, when consumers believed a restaurant chain was a member of the local chamber of
commerce, they were 40 percent more likely to eat at the franchise in the future. And if a consumer
believed one of the major automobile manufacturers was a member of its local chamber, the consumer
was 9 percent more likely to consider purchasing his or her next car from that automaker.
“This study reinforces research done in 2005 about the perceived capacity of chambers to lead businesses
and lead communities,” said Mick Fleming, president of the American Chamber of Commerce Executives
(ACCE). “These new national findings point to even more direct benefits for companies willing to be
stakeholders in their local chamber.”
The study results had good news for chambers themselves, where 82 percent of respondents indicated
that a local chamber of commerce “creates jobs and promotes economic development.”
“The message from this national study is as simple as
it is ground-breaking,” said Jim Blasingame, small
business expert and president of Small Business
Network, Inc. “Join your local chamber, be an active
participant in your chamber’s programs and be sure
to let your customers and prospects know you’re a
proud chamber supporter when they come in your
business and when they see your marketing material.”

Middle School Career Fair
The Wayne County Chamber of Commerce's Wayne Education Network
hosted the fifth annual county-wide Career Fair for public, private and
homeschooled eighth grade students on March 3, 2015. The event involved
interactive demonstrations and dialogue between 79 different business
representatives from the various career clusters. Connecting students to
careers provides relevancy to the school curriculum, helps students plan
their course selections, and connects secondary to post-secondary
education. The goal is to expose students to a wide variety of career options
and to make crucial connections with adults who might be working in the
students' chosen career area.
Volunteers were encouraged to talk with students about the varied components that comprise their career: high school preparation,
post-secondary educational requirements, technology employed in their jobs, and character aspects of employment such as criminal
background checks and drug screening requirements. Businesses from all over Wayne
County were able to share what they know with the students and help them as they
explore all of the career options that await them.
STEM Fair
STEM Fair
On March 4, 2015, the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce's Wayne Education
Network partnered with Wayne County Public Schools to host the first annual
county-wide STEM Fair. Wayne County Public Schools along with the 4-H Robotics
team setup displays relating to Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics. This first-ever event encouraged students to create a project, display
and be prepared to answer questions asked by the 7th grade Wayne County Public
Schools students that attended. The goal is to help students to understand their own
potential in the areas of STEM; to help them to build confidence and competence
among their peers; and to foster a spirit of scientific inquiry.

The N.C. Department of Labor honored Goldsboro area employers and employees at
the agency’s annual Safety Awards Banquet in Goldsboro on Wednesday, May 6th.
“It’s really an honor for me to travel throughout the state and recognize these
employers who are making a commitment to their employees’ safety and health,”
Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry said. “These employers are helping to make North
Carolina workplaces some of the safest in the country.”
The awards honored outstanding on-the-job safety achievements of each company
during 2014. Recipients were based in Dudley, Dunn, Four Oaks, Goldsboro,
Morrisville, Mount Olive and Smithfield.
Commissioner Berry spoke at the banquet and presented the awards.
The local recipients have met the stringent requirements necessary to receive a
safety award. Under program rules, companies must have been free of fatal accidents
at the site for which the award is given to be eligible. The gold award criteria are
based on a DART rate that is at least 50 percent below the statewide rate for its
industry. The rate includes cases of days away from work, restricted activity or job
transfer. The silver award is based only on cases with days away from work. They
are recorded when the worker misses at least one full day of work, not including the
day of the injury. The applicant must attain an incidence rate for cases with days
away from work that is at least 50 percent below the rate for its industry.
More information on the Labor Department’s Safety Awards Program is available by
calling 919-807-2908 or e-mailing Eursula Joyner at [email protected].

Twenty-five local high school juniors
graduated from the Wayne County Chamber
of Commerce Junior Leadership program on
May 5th. Kate Daniels, Wayne County
Chamber of Commerce President, stated
“With over 300 graduates in the last 17 years,
the Junior Leadership program is a proven
success. Our goal is for the students to have
an ‘inside look’ into Wayne County and
discover what their community has to offer.”
Two students, Nolan Davis from Wayne
Country Day School and Caroline Clucas from
Wayne Early Middle College High School
spoke on volunteerism and the Junior
Leadership program to the community
representatives, family and class members
that attended the graduation. In his speech
on volunteerism, Nolan Davis, son of Mike
and Bernice Davis, stated “Volunteering is not
about fulfilling required hours. It is to better
the lives of others. One must truly
have a passion for it. This year, the
class has worked closely together.
We have become friends. This is
important that we work well
together as we will be the next
leaders of Wayne County. In twenty
years, you will see us working as
county manager, or being the next
Kate Daniels (Chamber of
Commerce President).”
Kathy Jones, committee chair, stated
“Junior Leadership Wayne is an
outstanding leadership program. It
is a pleasure to work with these
students because one day we hope
to see them in leadership positions
in our community. The opportunity
to participate in this program is
coveted by high school juniors and
rightfully so." High School juniors
are selected for the year long
program in the fall of their junior
year. Once selected, the students
begin the program with a one-day
orientation and then spend six days
throughout the year focusing on a
variety of topics. Participants have
an opportunity to visit places
involving local government,
industry, health care, history,
education, military, and agribusiness. The students learn more
about our multi-faceted
county and about career
opportunities they may not have
considered.
The program is open to all high
school juniors who attend
public, private, or parochial
schools and homeschoolers in
Wayne County. Applicants
must have a solid "B" or above
average and demonstrate
leadership in school and/or
community activities.
Applications will be available at
the Wayne County Chamber of
Commerce and at each of the
area public high schools the
week school begins. For more
information, call Janet Brock at

Leadership Wayne Graduates!
Twenty-one local community members graduated from the
Wayne County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Wayne
program on May 21st.
The nine month program begins in September of each year
with an Opening Retreat where class members get acquainted
with the program and each other through participation of
various leadership skills development exercises and training
sessions. The program also offers networking opportunities as
the class members interact with area community leaders and
business owners at each of the 8 class days. The class days are
designed to allow the class members to become more familiar
with the area by visiting businesses as they relate to different
topics: Business & Industry Day, Seymour Johnson AFB Day,
Government & Law Day, History Day, Agri-Business Day,
Community Services Day, Education Day, and Arts & Leisure
Day.
The program also offers opportunities for professional
enhancement in team building through the selection and
implementation of a community based class project. This
year, the class elected to create a “Reading Garden” for the
Boys & Girls Club of Wayne County. Class Liaison, Dr. Ernie
White commented “Class members this year set a new
standard by exceeding the grant request of the Boys & Girls
Club. The fruit of their labor will positively impact current
and future children. I am extremely proud of their work, not
just for what they accomplished this year, but what they leave
behind. I encourage everyone to stop by the Boys & Girls Club
and see their work.”
Congratulations to this year’s graduating class!
Class president, Tonya Barber stated “I was honored to be part of the
2014-2015 leadership class. I have made a lot of new friends and
learned so much more about my home county. I recommend this
program to all residents of the area. I am thankful to have been given
such a wonderful opportunity.”
The program is open to area residents interested in additional
professional enhancement in team building, enhancing leadership
skills, getting involved in the community through community service
and volunteerism, getting opportunities to network with community
leaders and area business owners and becoming more familiar with
the area by participating in the monthly familiarization tours.
Applications are available at the Wayne County Chamber of
Commerce and on our website, www.waynecountychamber.com.
For more information, call Janet Brock at (919) 734-2241.
Charlotte Watson, committee chair, stated “This class has
truly proven the merit of this leadership program! They really
dug in, came together and made a difference in their
community and that is what the Chamber Leadership
program is all about. In the words of a great leader, Henry
Ford-“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is
progress. Working together is success!”- this class has made
this year a huge success. It has been a joy to get to know and
work with this caliber of leaders."
This year’s keynote speaker was Dr. Kay Albertson, President
of Wayne Community College. Dr. Albertson spoke on the 10
lessons in leadership that she has learned over the years. One
lesson was entitled the “Happy Factor” where she believes that
in order to lead one must commit yourself to the job at hand
and express in your tone and actions that you are interested
and excited about the project.
