Join us on January 28th for the largest event of the year !
The Chamber's Annual Banquet provides an overview of the Chamber's
accomplishments during the previous year and includes the ceremonial induction of
the 2016 Chairman of the Board to its membership and the community. The spotlight of
the evening is the Chamber's presentation of the Cornerstone Award. This award is
presented each year to an outstanding citizen who has given a life of commitment and
service to Wayne County. The prestigious Ollie Toomey Service Award will be given to
an individual who has volunteered their time and service above and beyond. The Wayne
Community College Small Business of the Year Awards will be presented. These awards
are given to businesses that meet the US Small Business Administration criteria for
classification as a "small business.” And last but not least, the Ambassador of the Year
Award will be given.
This will be a night of celebration and vision for the New Year. Chairman Dr. Scott
LaFevers will pass the gavel to Neal Benton who will serve as Chairman of the Board
in 2016. We are thankful for each of the businesses who make up the Wayne County
Chamber of Commerce and the tremendous work you do in our community. Collectively,
we will continue to move Wayne County forward! RSVP today!

Nick Tennyson was named as Secretary of
the North Carolina Department of Transportation
in August 2015.
Prior to assuming this role, Tennyson served
as the department’s Chief Deputy Secretary,
responsible for providing oversight and
integration across all operational and support
functions of the North Carolina Department of
Transportation. He also served for three months
as interim commissioner of the Division of Motor Vehicles.
Tennyson is the former mayor of Durham, a role he held from 19972001. During that time, he co-founded the Metropolitan Coalition of
Mayors with Governor Pat McCrory, then mayor of Charlotte. While
serving as mayor, Tennyson was vice-chair of the Metropolitan
Planning Organization for his region, which provided him the
opportunity to learn about the NCDOT and federal transportation
planning process.
Tennyson also served as an officer in the Navy before beginning a
career as a home builder and developer. In the late 1980s, he
transitioned to work with trade associations, such as the Greater
Durham Chamber of Commerce. Prior to joining NCDOT, he was

Wayne Education Network
Career & STEM Fairs
The Wayne County Chamber of Commerce's Wayne Education
Network is gearing up for the 6th annual county-wide Career
Fair and 2nd annual STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering &
Math) Fair. The Career Fair is open to all public, private and
home school eighth grade students and will be held Tuesday,
February 23, 2016. The STEM Fair is also open to all Wayne
County seventh grade students and will be held the following
day, Wednesday, February 24, 2016.
The Annual State of the Military was held
on Thursday, November 12th at Lane Tree. Julie
Daniels, Military Affairs Committee (MAC) Chair,
Col Mark Slocum, Commander, 4th Fighter Wing
and Col Michael Miller, Vice Commander, 916 Air
Refueling Wing briefed local business and
government leaders on highlights of the last 12
months and shared comments on upcoming
activities, opportunities and challenges. The high
energy and informative briefing was one that left
attendees energized about the incredible movement
and activity of SJAFB and the role that the Wayne
County community is playing to support the men
and women who defend this great Nation.
“Today our Military Affairs committee includes 135
Chamber Members, who are dedicated to
supporting the efforts of SJAFB. Our Mission is to
maintain and improve the community’s relationship
with Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, to learn
about the operation and needs of the base, and to
advocate for policy, procedures, infrastructure and
an environment which will promote the importance
of SJAFB to the United States Department of
Defense and to endeavor to ensure the long term
viability of SJAFB in the face of overall reductions
within the Department of Defense. I continue to be
amazed by the support that everyone is willing to
give without question - every time we ask. You will
not ever have the opportunity to meet finer men
and women as there are at Seymour. It is a
tremendous asset to have these individuals within
our community, the families working in our
businesses, going to our churches, going to our
schools and often volunteering to benefit those in
need. We are grateful,” stated Mrs. Daniels.

The Career Fair will involve interactive demonstrations and
dialogue between multiple different business representatives
from the various career clusters. Connecting students to
careers provides relevancy to the school curriculum, helps
students plan their course selections, and connects secondary
to post-secondary education. The goal is to expose students to
a wide variety of career options, and to make crucial
connections with adults who might be working in the students'
chosen career area.
The STEM Fair will include three different areas of focus for
the students. One section will be dedicated to student STEM
related projects, another section will be for static displays like
the Woodman of the World Star Lab, the last section will
showcase Wayne County’s seventh grade students in multiple
STEM Battle competitions.
We are recruiting businesses of all trades to come out and talk
with our students at both events. It is easy to prepare for, just
bring a real world problem that you have solved. It could be
something as simple as a plumber bringing in pipe and fittings
to let the students learn the dynamics of plumbing, an
engineer bringing a set of drawings that need to be updated for
a manufactured item or a funeral director bringing the tools of
their trade out for the students to see and touch.
Volunteers are encouraged to talk with students about the
varied components that comprise their career; high school
preparation, post-secondary educational requirements,
technology employed in their jobs, and character aspects of
employment such as criminal background checks and drug
screening requirements.
Join other area businesses as we share experiences with our
future workforce! Call Janet Brock at the Chamber to find out
how you can participate!
On November 17, we toured two unique education sites and downtown Goldsboro. First, we visited Partnership for
Children of Wayne County. There, we learned about the many programs and services offered. Partnership for
Children is a nonprofit corporation that works to make the most of the time between a child’s birth and their entry
into kindergarten. Before our departure from Partnership for Children, we were allowed to take a look at their
“Lending Library”, which is one of their offered services, a library of educational toys and games for children.
After Partnership for Children, we toured Edgewood Community Developmental School. At Edgewood, each
student has their own unique education plan, an IEP, that caters to their specific needs. Many people were unaware
that there is a school like Edgewood in Goldsboro. What Edgewood does for its students is outstanding, and I am
glad there is a school that offers what Edgewood does in Wayne County.
To learn about the history of Goldsboro, the last thing we did was “put on our walking shoes” and tour the newly
renovated downtown area. We went to the old Waynesborough hotel to learn the history of the building, and were
allowed onto the roof to get a spectacular view of downtown. We then made our way to the Union station, learning
about quite a few historic buildings along the way, including the old Wayne County Library. We were allowed
inside of the Union station, including the second story. The old station was fascinating and was definitely a
highlight of the day for me.
Leadership Wayne Class Jumps Onboard the Literacy Train
This year’s Leadership Wayne class is jumping
onboard the literacy train with the Kiwanis Club
and Partnership for Children of Wayne County.
The project is on track to be the best one yet! After
carefully researching and reviewing nine
community project proposals the class selected one
submitted by the Kiwanis Club and Partnership for
Children of Wayne County.
The original project proposal was to create a
Reading Station with storage; add a story walk
through Herman Park; give a face-lift and
improvements to the Train Station; paint inside of
the tunnel and add art work; improve the landscaping inside the train yard; and replace the damaged fencing. This
year’s class is hard at work with all the interested parties to complete this project and make it the best one yet.
All class members will serve on one of two teams. The Project Management team will create the project scope, scope
baseline, schedule, cost baselines, management plan, staffing plan, procurement, and analyze the project quality and
risks. The Fundraising/Marketing Team will create a multi-facetted fundraising plan to include a raffle, sponsorships,
and donation of project materials as well as facilitating the public reveal of the project.
Raffle tickets are on sale now. Each ticket will get you one chance to win 1 of 5 prizes: an IPad mini, 32” Smart TV,
FitBit, Dinner for 2 at Ed’s Southern Food & Spirits, or a package of products made in Wayne County. The tickets are $5
each or $12 for three. The drawing will be held January 28th during the Chamber’s Annual Banquet.
Call the Chamber today to purchase a ticket!
EDUCATION impacts everyone at every level and the Annual
Education Hot Topic Breakfast held on Wednesday, December
16th at Lane Tree proved just that. The distinguished speakers
included Dr. Kay Albertson, President, Wayne Community
College, Dr. Michael Dunsmore, Superintendent, Wayne County
Public Schools & Dr. Philip Kerstetter, President of the
University of Mount Olive. Dr. Ed Wilson, Chairman of the
Wayne Education Network, led the discussion for the event.
Attendees received an inside look into chow each of the
organizations are collaborating with each other, how the state
budget is impacting their organizations and what’s on the
horizon for education in 2016. A consistent theme throughout
the discussion was that of the importance that collaboration has
in the success of the of each organization and the community as
a whole.
Millie Chalk of Duke Energy made a surprise announcement
awarding Wayne Community College with a $250,000 grant on
behalf of the Duke Energy Foundation. The funds will be used
to purchase state-of-the-art practice equipment for students in
WCC’s new mechatronics engineering technology and existing
industrial systems technology.

Thank you to those of you who could join us for the
Annual Christmas Holiday Mixer. With record attendance, it was a packed
house! Great food, great drinks, and great Chamber friends. It was nice hearing
several attendees say that they didn’t know a lot of the people there…that’s a
good thing, folks! That means new faces are getting involved at some level.
We know that engagement is the key to success!
