from the
Board President
It has been a privilege and an honor to serve as President of the Board of Directors.
Each year, we seem to find ourselves with one foot in the past and one foot in the
future. 2013 was no exception for The Women’s Center.
On the Cover...
Hands can be used for so
many positive things.
World-renowned artist
Guido Daniele used hands
for his canvas to create the
beautiful art on this year’s
cover. Just as the trunk of a
tree supports and nurtures
its leaves and provides
shelter, this artist’s creative
expression reminds us that
hands are supportive
and beautiful.
At The Women’s Center,
our mission of providing
safety, shelter and support to
women and their families and
facilitating their development
is our top priority. It is also
important that we share our
conviction that hands can—
and should—be used for
many other positive things.
We believe hands are for...

You can see other ways
that hands have been
integrated into positive
and creative pieces of art
at Guido Daniele’s website,

After 25 years as The Women’s Center’s Executive Director, Marie Kingsbury expressed
her desire to retire and find new challenges. How do we appropriately thank
someone who has spent all of her professional life providing safety, shelter and
support to women and children in peril? The
Women’s Center owes much to Marie, not only
for her guidance and leadership, but for growing
us to a strong, viable and visible agency in the
community. There are too many “firsts” under her
direction to itemize. Suffice to say that naming the
emergency shelter the Marie Kingsbury Domestic
Violence Shelter was not only appropriate, but
required. Her legacy will long be with us—right
beside that of our founding mothers.
Sincere thanks to the Search Committee composed
of board and community members along with
Jamie Pratt, our consultant, for their dedication
and focus in selecting the right person to lead us
forward. Angela Mancuso joined The Women’s
Center in November, bringing with her a strong
background and experience in domestic violence
and sexual assault and, most of all, a deep, abiding passion for our mission.
We are excited and fortunate to have her lead us into the future.
Our economic situation is solid but always challenging. Government funding is
regularly cut and foundations change focus. We must remain diligent and
single-minded in supporting on-going and future financial requirements. In 2013,
The Women’s Center provided free services to over 9,000 women and children, proving
the need is great.
Thank you to the great number of corporations and donors who continue to recognize
the work we do. The Greater Milwaukee’s Foundation’s Match Day remains a significant
part of our fund raising efforts, introducing The Women’s Center to new donors.
And, last but foremost, my heartfelt gratitude and thanks to The Women’s Center staff,
board, volunteers and friends for their dedicated work and commitment in serving
our clients, aiding and supporting them as they find the courage and means to move
forward with lives without violence and abuse. The hugs, passion, and caring of the
staff is amazing to me. I was honored to be able to help.
Thank you for all you do to help provide healing.
Sharon Wood, Board President
A Letter
from the
Executive Director
Since I started at The Women’s Center in November 2013, many people have asked what brought
me here. Aside from the thirty-seven year legacy of helping thousands of women and their children
live safe, violence-free lives with progressive and unique programming, here are just a few things
that resonated with me:
• The legacy of Marie Kingsbury, a pioneer in the
domestic violence, sexual assault movement.
Marie worked tirelessly to ensure the families
of Waukesha and surrounding communities
who needed our services experienced the
highest level of compassionate advocacy. She
paved a path of progressive and collaborative
programming and her passion for this work had
enormous impact.
• The staff who commit daily to advocate for
those we serve. They responded to 7,300 calls
to our Hotline, provided hours of individual
and group counseling to youth and adults,
supported hundreds of women navigating the
legal system, provided over 6500 nights of care
in our shelter, provided employment counseling
and job training, helped hundreds of children feel
loved, supported and safe through our children’s programming. It is impossible to articulate
everything The Women’s Center does for one woman, one child, and one family.
• The hundreds of truly dedicated volunteers who work alongside staff ensuring that every
day for every client is brighter. Whether it is the Gentle Man volunteers who provide positive
mentoring and role modeling for our children, the bakers who ensure every client has a
birthday cake made for them, the special events volunteers who raise awareness and funds, or
the many other community members who give of their time and talents. We are honored and
humbled to have such caring and committed volunteers. • The faithful and compassionate donors such as you! Your support of The Women’s Center
through activities such as Match Day, special events, and appeals truly impacts the life of
another human being. I am personally encouraged by this outpouring of support for our
mission, and I can assure our clients are encouraged as well.
Going forward, we will continue to focus on enhancing our core programming, responding to client
needs, and increasing public awareness of our comprehensive services. No one suffering at the
hands of an abuser should feel alone.
On behalf of the women, men and children we serve at The Women’s Center, I thank you for
embracing our mission, sharing our commitment, and making a difference through your steadfast
and continued involvement.
Angela Mancuso, Executive Director

Programs Services
and
Domestic Violence
Programs and Services
The Women’s Center offers group and
individual counseling to adult and child
survivors of domestic violence. In 2013,
328 adults and 114 children and 45 parents
of child witnesses of domestic violence
received domestic violence counseling at
The Women’s Center.
22,113
hours
126 individuals
and 17 groups
provided 22,113
volunteer hours
Sister House Shelter
Our emergency shelter provides a safe
and immediate refuge for women and
their children fleeing their homes because
of domestic abuse and sexual violence.
In addition to receiving basic needs,
shelter residents have access to our
comprehensive services that provide
healing and independence, all of which
are located downstairs from the shelter.
In 2013, we provided 6,565 nights of care,
19,695 meals and 13,130 snacks to 301
women and children.
Transitional Living Program
Emergency shelter provides immediate safety
for the short-term but often is not enough
time for women to become financially
independent and locate permanent housing.
Our Transitional Living program provides safe
and affordable housing where survivors can
live up to two years. In 2013, 56 women and
41 children participated in our Transitional
Living program.
2
24-Hour Hotline
Our confidential 24-hour Hotline provides
a direct link between people in crisis and
The Women’s Center. The Hotline is staffed
24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In 2013, we
answered 7,344 crisis calls.
Sexual Assault and
Abuse Programs
The Women’s Center offers counseling to
adult and child survivors of sexual assault and
sexual abuse through individual and group
counseling. There were 71 adults, 31 children,
and 139 parents of sexually abused children
who received services through this program
in 2013.
Child Abuse Prevention Services
This program is designed to reduce the
likelihood of family violence, abuse and
neglect by providing emergency respite and
onsite childcare, crisis telephone counseling,
individual and group family counseling and
parenting classes. In 2013, 133 adults and 334
children used these services.
20%
of clients
whose ethnicity was
known were hispanic.
Services are offered
in both
english & spanish.
Legal Advocacy Project
Our Legal Advocates staff offices at The
Women’s Center and the Waukesha County
Courthouse helping survivors of domestic
abuse and sexual violence navigate the court
system. We assist with obtaining restraining
orders and provide advocacy and support
throughout the entire court process. A total
of 255 clients used these services in 2013.
the HOTLINE is staffed

Education and Prevention
Our Violence Prevention Advocate provides
education and prevention programming
about domestic abuse and sexual violence
to youth at local schools and other groups
in Waukesha and surrounding counties.
Education is provided through speaking
engagements and training sessions. The goal
of this program is to create awareness and
prevention, but also to provide an avenue
for those who have been victimized to safely
reach out for services. In 2013, this program
reached 5,313 individuals.
Employment Program
The Employment Program prepares women
for work, often after years of being barred
from working outside the home. Clients
identify their strengths and employment
objectives, increase their job readiness
skills through mock interviews, learn
resume writing, and begin mentoring
with professionals working in the business
community. In 2013, we served 232 women.
Volunteer Involvement
Volunteers continue to play a vital role at The
Women’s Center. In 2013, 126 individuals and
17 groups of volunteers made a difference at
The Women’s Center.
328
adults
&
114
children
received domestic
violence counseling
There may be some duplication in these numbers, as a client may have used more than one or all of
The Women’s Center’s services and would, therefore, be recorded as receiving services in each program area.

A Letter from
the Treasurer
The financial position of The
Women’s Center is healthy as
confirmed by a solid balance
sheet. The financial position in
2013 reflected a 2% decrease in
unrestricted net assets, this included
$84,820 of depreciation. Total 2013
revenues were 4% greater than
budgeted. Total expenses increased
by a modest 1.5%. The Women’s
Center’s cash position remains
strong. We own our buildings
and other property, and have no
significant outstanding debt.
The Women’s Center practices
sound fiscal management. Budgets
are carefully prepared and reviewed
monthly by a Finance committee
and our Board. We take very
seriously our obligation to donors
to use your contributions wisely to
support our mission of providing
safety, shelter and support to
women and their families. Donor
support allows us to offer programs
and services free of charge.
The valuable resource The
Women’s Center provides in our
communities will be maintained
with strong individual and business
support. There will always be
financial challenges. Sustained
and innovative fundraising efforts,
diligent work in grant writing,
success in special events and
ongoing expense control will
need to be maintained. Continued
financial health allows us to provide
our vital services to women and
families in need of help and hope.

Every year The Women’s Center holds special events to raise awareness of our mission and critical
dollars of support. Each event is different, but all provide information, enjoyment and an opportunity to
network. For dates and more information visit The Women’s Center website at www.twcwaukesha.org.
April/May
Join us as we celebrate each anniversary of The Women’s Center at the Anniversary Luncheon. This is
our largest event and features an informative keynote speaker who addresses important societal issues
affecting our communities locally to internationally.
April
April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Child Abuse Prevention Month. The Women’s Center provides
information and conducts programs on these issues during the month. One in three American women
will be sexually abused during their lifetime.
July/August
Supporters of The Women’s Center enjoy delicious food, drinks and entertainment as they watch the
sunset in the Lake Country area with friends at The Women’s Center’s Summer Evening event.
September/October
Our Futures Free From Violence event engages young professionals in our efforts to break the cycle
of domestic and sexual violence. The event offers an opportunity for the next generation of leaders to
partner with The Women’s Center to send the message that violence in our homes and communities
should not be expected or tolerated.
October
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Women’s Center provides information and conducts
programs during the month. One in four women will be affected by domestic violence in their lifetime.
November
Our Fashion Show involves collaboration with local clothiers to provide a unique fashion retrospective.
Board members, staff and other friends of The Women’s Center are invited to be models. Come and see
an interesting variety of fashion, and support The Women’s Center.
3
The mission of The Women’s Center
is to provide safety, shelter, and support
to women and their families,
and to facilitate their development.
