Celebrating 50 Years
Pats Peak birthday bash January 5th
The 2012-2013 season marks Pats Peak's
50th Anniversary season under the Patenaude
family ownership, which makes it the longest
continuously operating ski area run by the
same owner.
Pats Peak opened for skiing on January
5, 1963. The four Patenaude brothers – Joe,
David, Wayne and Stuart – combined Yankee
ingenuity with the several businesses owned in
the family to hand-fashion a ski area.
Saturday, January 5, 2013 marks the 50th
Anniversary of Pats Peak. To commemorate
this day Pats Peak will be celebrating with a
Birthday Party Celebration.
The day’s events include: WGIR Rock
101.1 DJ playing music from 10am-2pm in the
Base Area; Snap Candy free giveaways from
10am-2pm; a Birthday Celebration at 2pm in
the Main Lodge with a 50 foot cake, speeches
and contests for the Oldest Pats Peak Season
Pass and Most Pats Peak Season Passes-only 1
pass will be counted per ski season; an AprèsSki Party in the Sled Pub with a Harpoon Beer
Promo, Live Music by Nick’s Other Band and

“The Patenaude brothers had a vision 50
years ago and we are excited to continue the
traditions of Pats Peak. We look forward to
welcoming our skiers and riders during this
50th Anniversary season,” says Blomback.
Hillsborough couple wins Megabucks $2.1 million
The clerk at Circle K in Hillsborough made
a mistake, but Scott and Cathy Bennett aren't
complaining. Scott wanted to buy tickets to two
games on Wednesday.
He said he'd like a Lucky For Life ticket
and a Tri State Megabucks Plus ticket, but the
clerk sold him two Tri State Megabucks Plus
tickets instead. Scott didn't complain then,
and he didn't complain later when he found
out that his was the winning $2.1 million
ticket of the Tri State Megabucks jackpot.
The Bennetts chose the one-time cash option
payout of $1.3 million. Cathy and members of
the family collected the winnings Friday, but
Scott couldn't attend as he was snow plowing
for his customers.

Henniker Community School promotes 'Ambassadors of Kindness'
school.
The AOK Assembly on Wednesday,
December 19, was conducted completely
by the 7/8th grade student council. In
addition to announcing the number of acts
of kindness that had been accumulated to
date, the assembly featured the first per-
The Ambassadors of Kindness (AOK)
theme at the Henniker Community School
began eight years ago following a 7th grade
class discussion about role models. HCS
Teacher Elizabeth Paul used an example of
an unkind incident between two 7th graders to begin the class discussion. It was after that discussion that students noted they
had the choice to be kind to all of the lower
grade students and become positive role
models for them. The term Ambassadors of
Kindness came up at that class meeting and
became what it is today; the theme for the
Henniker Community School.
Each year since, HCS conducts whole
school assemblies where acts of kindness are noted and all the positive ways
students and staff share their kindnesses
are recognized. During the school year,
students, faculty, and staff are encouraged
to fill out an Act of Kindness slips any time
they observe someone doing something
nice for them or someone else. These slips
are turned into the office, laminated, and
then hung in various locations around the
school. Students, teachers, and staff also
are encouraged to wear their AOK shirts
every Friday and always on days of AOK assemblies. The AOK logo on the shirts was
designed by a team of Henniker teachers.
To determine what themes the AOK
assemblies should focus on, the school
uses behavior data to see what issues have
been noted in recent weeks. In addition to
focusing on a particular theme, such as this
month’s kindness and generosity, for assemblies; the selected theme is also carried
on to classroom morning circle discussions in the elementary school and teacher
advisory group discussions in the middle

Deering Selectmen reject support of seniors' group
On Wednesday, December 19, 2012
Charles “Chuck” Gaides, a resident of
Deering and Board member and Committee member of the GREATER HILLSBOROUGH SENIOR SERVICES (GHSS) presented the Deering Board of Selectmen an
overview of the GHSS services that have
been offered and provided to Deering
Seniors since the committee was formed.
While this committee has only been
functioning for the last several months
after finding a semi-permanent home in
the lower hall of St. Mary’s Church on
Church Street in Hillsboro, this was an opportunity to share with the Selectmen the
progress being made. This overview included activities undertaken by the committee such as: Senior
information gathering sessions, social
activities, trips in and out of state, presentations such as health, wellness, safety
and senior rides transportation services,
service opportunities, a monthly newsletter “Senior Moments,” the committee’s
budget information, as well as information
on monthly meetings and luncheons. Chuck also included a breakdown of
information regarding how many seniors
from the various towns were serviced
along with the number of volunteers. Although the participation statistics were
relatively low with 103 Hillsboro Seniors,
47 Deering Seniors and 41 Other Community Seniors, it did show that there was a
need and that the Seniors of Deering were
taking advantage of these GHSS offerings. With this need established Chuck made a
request that some funding from the Town
of Deering be included in next year’s
budget or as a Warrant Article. He left the
amount up to the Selectmen. A number
of Board of Selectmen questions, opinions
and statements followed this presentation. With 2 members of the 3 member Board
in opposition it was clear that this request
was rejected. The Newport Historical Society has many items for sale at the entry to Sugar River Bank.
Christmas Tree Bonfire supports the Food Pantry

Department, Hillsboro Parks and
Recreation Department and The Office of Youth Services are sponsoring a
Christmas Tree Bonfire at Grimes Field,
on Saturday, January 5th from 5:00pm
– 6:30pm. Trees may be dropped off at
Grimes Field the day of the event after
12:00 noon in the parking lot adjacent
to skateboarding and playground area.)

Newport Selectmen wants 0 budget jump
The Newport Board of Selectmen gave Town Manager Paul
Brown his marching orders at their last meeting, telling him
that they are looking for no increase on the budget's bottom
line. Selectman Gary Nichols said that although he is looking for a zero increase budget, the Board needs to drag some
money out for infrastructure improvements Selectman Todd
Fratzel said Newport needs to concentrate on core services and
core infrastructure such as roadwork and bridgework. Brown
responded that if voters turn down the budget at Town meeting, a default budget could possibly run $110,000 to $120,000
more than the proposed budget. Newport has been operating
on default budgets for two years.
Weare robots win LEGO Mindstorms
Weare Middle School Copper Bots won first place for their
research project in a regional competition held at Bishop Brady
High School in Concord. In addition to learning robotics and
computer programming by competing in LEGO Mindstorms
robot games, FIRST LEGO League teams are tasked to solve
real-world problems through research. This season, teams were
challenged to improve the quality of life for seniors. The Copper
Bots invented a product that improves accuracy and availability
of a senior patient' medical information.

H-D students join Life Skills Bread Baking Program
On December 13th, Hillsboro-Deering
Elementary School students participated
in a Life Skills Bread Baking Program that
has reached more than 190,000 students
nation-wide since it began in 1992, providing kids with a fun, real-world application
of skills they’re already learning in school
- math, science, reading, following directions, problem solving, and more.
Teaching to an audience of students in
grades 4 & 5, a King Arthur Flour instructor presents a 50-minute demonstration
on the bread baking process.
Students go home with flour, a recipe
booklet, yeast, a bread scraper, a bread
donation bag and the know-how to make
bread from scratch.
One loaf of this delicious bread will
be enjoyed by the student’s family and
one loaf will be returned to school and
donated to the Hillsboro Food Pantry.
Students learn a new skill and experience
the satisfaction of helping others in their

Deering Police Chief Pushee recently

indictments were handed down charging

2nd homicide trial for Hillsborough man
A Hillsborough man will be tried again on negligent homicide and
drunken driving charges relating to a 2011 accident in Stoddard which
killed his passenger and friend.
Eric Mays' first trial in October ended with a mistrial because of a
hung jury. In his first trial, Mays was tried on two counts of negligent
homicide, two counts of aggravated driving while intoxicated and
driving after revocation or suspension. Prosecutors said he was driving
a 1997 Honda Accord that went off Route 123. Passenger Brandon
Farrow, 24, of Hancock, died at the scene of the accident. A second
occupant, Lesley Mouradian, 25, of Milford, was also injured. Due
to conflicting testimony on who was driving, the jury was unable to
decide, a mistrial was declared.

Fire Fund set up for Newport woman
The Diane Callum Fire Fund account has been set up at Lake
Sunapee Bank in Newport to assist Callum whose home was heavily
damaged by an early morning fire Sunday.
Callum has been a 4-H volunteer for the past 35 years and the
Sullivan County Extension office in Newport was contacted by several
people wishing to aid Callum. Donations may be sent directly to the
Lake Sunapee Bank with checks made payable to the "Diane Callum
Fire Fund." Donations are also being accepted at La Valley Building
Supply in Newport. Donations can also be mailed directly to LaValley's

The Coach House at New London Inn
The New London Inn, 353 Main St. in New London is greeting the
New Year with a new name for its onsite restaurant. Formerly known
as Rockwell's at the Inn, the restaurant is now called The Coach House
- a name that symbolizes an earlier era. "The New London Inn was
built in 1792 and had a dining room for its guests. Back in the early
1800s, stagecoaches traveling from Concord would park alongside the

This will probably be one of my shortest

The bad news is you and I did not win
Tri State Megabucks. The good news is that
a great and deserving family did. Congratulations Scott, Cathy, Danielle, Travis and

Give yourself the best Christmas present ever.
I’ve found that it’s better to put the
potatoes in the box first. Then the onions
and carrots. There’s always room for the
canned vegetables, gravy, and cranberry
sauce later. The bread has to go on top.
Much like in life, if you don’t take care of
the big stuff first, the small stuff will take
over. These are the lessons you learn stuffing Christmas baskets in the basement of
St. Mary’s Church with the Hillsboro Lions’
Club.
In 1994, the local churches who did
Easter and Thanksgiving and Christmas
baskets announced they could no longer
afford three times a year. So the Lions
stepped up.
The Messenger, the local paper owned
by my folks, helps raise money to buy the
groceries. Local supermarkets usually
throw in some extra food. And the Lions
make sure each family on the list gets
enough of everything for a full Christmas
dinner.
This year, we sent out more than 111
baskets, feeding more than 400 people.
One was for a family of 16, three generations under one roof. The toughest are the
baskets for one.
I like to come back to hometown
because it helps people who need it. But I
have to admit to myself that the real reason
I volunteer is because it feels great.
Conservatives too often steer into the
perception that we’re heartless. Quite the
contrary. There is nothing compassionate about pushing the government to take
someone else’s money or to support failed
government bureaucracies that trap low
income families in poverty. Helping others
may not be a legal responsibility, but it is a
moral one.
In his landmark book Capitalism and
Freedom, Milton Friedman wrote “there
is one and only one social responsibility of
business–to use it resources and engage in
activities designed to increase its profits so
long as it stays within the rules of the game,
which is to say, engages in open and free
competition without deception or fraud."
Friedman was not saying that businesses can’t improve society. Rather he was
arguing supporting charity at the expense
of the business is a really bad way to do so.
Just about all of the charity done by
private business is undertaken to help the
firm, by attracting new customers, improving its image, or qualifying for favorable
tax treatment. This is great. But the societal
benefits of these PR projects are dwarfed
by those of a well-run business meeting
consumer demand. Even businesses with
no thought beyond the bottom line create
and distribute wealth throughout our
society.
The free market generates prosperity
for all income levels far more efficiently
than government, but not perfectly. Corporate giving certainly help a lot of people,
but not enough. That’s where you and I
come in.
When I was working as a radio reporter
in the Upper Valley, our three stations each
took on a holiday charity drive. My AM
news station organized the Christmas Crusade for Kids, which was like a local Toys
for Tots program. My best memory from
that project was the year that the students
at the Hartford VoTech built handmade
wooden toys to go along with the store
bought toys donated by listeners.
The hits station raised money for the
Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth, which
was just then opening its Prenatal Intensive Care Unit. The country station raised
money for David’s House, the home away
from home for kids getting treatment at
Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
I can’t say enough about David’s House.
The story of its founding will break your
heart. For three and a half years, David Cyr
was treated for acute lymphocytic leukemia
at Mary Hitchcock Medical Center. His
parents, Dick and Gerry, worried about
all the other parents who couldn’t afford
$1 a year. It received no other financial
assistance from the hospital. It keeps the
doors open with private donations.
This Christmas season do something
selfish. Do something to make yourself feel
better. Give your time. Give your money.
Support a local charity. I have a suggestion
if you need it.

experience life as a police recruit. This
year, the weeklong Academy will take
place at the New Hampshire Technical
Institute campus in Concord, New Hampshire from June 22 – June 28.
Registration deadline is June 15, but
applications are considered on a first
come, first serve basis. At the conclusion
students continuing their education in the
law enforcement or criminal justice fields.
There is funding offered by the Dunbarton
Police Association, Sean Powers Memorial Fund, NH Sheriff’s Association and
anonymous provider for assistance for
applicants who may not be able to fully
afford the tuition fee.

Newport's 'Twas Just Before Christmas' successful
The Newport Area Chamber of Commerce's 13th Annual Twas Just Before
Christmas set attendance records. "Last
year we gave out about 200 Passports to
Santa and on Saturday night we ran out
of them when the demand reached 300,
probably 350," said Ella Casey, executive
director of the Newport chamber.
The Newport Firefighters Association
also ran out of marshmallows they were
roasting in front of the Woodhull Complex
building on Main Street. "In all those years
that's the first time we've ever ran out,"
said Fire Chief Wayne Conroy.
Those passports, provided free to all
children, allowed them to enter the Newport Opera House through Santa's Secret
Entrance to meet Santa on stage and have
their picture taken.
The Newport Recreation Department's
Chili Cookoff was once again a favorite
attraction. There were 17 chili makers competing for the honor of being selected the
very best by the public who went from location to location for a sample before casting
their votes. In the individual class, Bob
Stanhope placed first followed by Robert
Griffiths and Chris Osgood. Violette's Supermarket was No. 1 in the business class
followed by The "King" of Cupcakes.
Students in the drama club at Hillsboro-Deering Elementary School recently put on a performance of “Fractured Fairytales.” The performance was directed

A field of 11 girls will be in the running for
queen of the 97th Annual Newport Winter
Carnival Feb. 3-10. The Carnival Pageant is
scheduled for Friday, Feb. 8th in the Newport
Opera House. The queen will receive a
minimum cash award of $1,000 or the same
amount for a college scholarship, according to
Todd Hjelt, executive director of the Newport
Opera House Association that oversees the
pageant. Other cash awards will be given out
for the winner of the talent portion of the pageant, Miss Congeniality and the contestant
who generates the most revenue from the
sale of carnival buttons and pageant tickets.

A significant number of adults are at risk of unintentionally overdosing on over-the-counter (OTC) pain medication, according to a new
study in the Journal of General Internal Medicine . Many adults in
the US regularly use OTC pain medication containing the active ingredient acetaminophen (Tylenol), the most commonly used OTC pain
medication in the US. They take it either own its own or in combination with other drugs, which may also contain acetaminophen. The
ease of access to OTC drugs presents a challenge to patient safety,
as many individuals may lack the necessary health literacy skills to
self-administer these medications appropriately. Indeed, individuals
make independent decisions that match an OTC product to a selfdiagnosed symptom or condition. Worryingly, acetaminophen overdose is the leading cause of acute liver failure.

Legion joins 'Wreaths Across America'

Members of Wilkins-Cloues-Bigelow-Pearson Post 39, American Legion, Warner, NH, placed wreaths at the entrances of five
cemeteries in North Sutton, Bradford, Webster and Warner plus at
the Sgt. William J. Tracy Memorial Bridge in Webster on December
15, 2012 in conjunction with “Wreaths Across America”. Participating from Post 39 were Post Commander Charles Trowbridge and
Post Public Information Officer Rich Dahlgren. This is the fourth
year that they have performed this ceremony which is accompanied
by a brief prayer.
Sunapee Recreation projects successful
Scott Blewitt updated the Sunapee Selectmen on the Turkey Trot
and Christmas in the Harbor. Blewit reported that the sixth annual
turkey trot was very successful with over nine hundred participants.
The expenditures for the 2012 turkey trot were $7,717.39. Blewitt
also reported that the Harbor Magic was a wonderful event and the
weather was perfect. The Looney Lunge was a bit light, with only
four (4) people jumping in the lake. Scott Blewitt went on to say that
Rhonda Gurney, who was the Chairman, did a wonderful job. At the
event, a $500 donation from the Dewey Family was received. Blewitt
asked to use the $500 donation, along with the $300 donation that
was received from the Sunapee Seniors and accepted at the last
meeting, to buy a new paddleboard. The cost of the paddleboard is
$899, so the remaining amount of $99 would come out of the recreation department budget. The Board approved. SHARP-ALL

Henniker Youth Hockey Association
The Henniker Huskies Edmunds’ Ace Hardware Bantam team
suffered two tough losses this weekend. Despite Jake Boucher and
Justin Bowen bringing their best efforts to the game, the Huskies lost
to top ranked Lebanon 0-6. The team rallied on Sunday against Twin
Valley with goalie, Thomas Scott, playing a very strong game in the
net. Patrick Early also fought hard for the team’s offense. Ultimately
the Huskies fell 0-2. The Henniker Huskies Parker, Blake & Cole PeeWees came out on
top of the Tri-Town Monarchs Sunday. Zach Urban and Stevie Cantin
each had an assist on Paul Molnar’s goals, while Chase Buckman
skated hard to keep the puck in the Huskie’s offensive end, helping
Jamo Bourque earn his second shut-out of the year.
Henniker Huskies Firman Electric Squirt team tied the Laconia
Lakers on Saturday 4-4. Ainsley King did an outstanding job in
goal. Andrew Nordstrom, Reece Protzmann and Drew O'Brien all
scored unassisted. Drew O'Brien scored an additional final goal in the
remaining 2 seconds of the game assisted by Cabot Lineberry. Harrison Briggs and Noah Lewis played well defensively.

WEARE - Richard H. "Dick" Perkins,
86, died Dec. 18, 2012, following a brief illness. Born in Goffstown, he was a lifelong
resident of Weare. He was the son of Ralph
and Josephine (Duckworth) Perkins. He
was predeceased by his son, Richard H.
Perkins Jr. Members of his family include
his loving wife, Bonnie; three grandchildren, Katy Davis, Bethaney Perkins and
Sam Perkins; four great-grandchildren,
McKenzie Perkins, Tristan Perkins, Jamie
Davis, and MaKayla Amoako; and two
nieces and extended family.
