A Hillsborough couple preparing to go to Concord for the birth
of their third child discovered that the baby had her own ideas, and
they had to deliver her in their driveway instead. Pete and Tori Gelinas were ready to make the half-hour trip to the Concord Birthing
Center on Monday morning when Tori Gelinas went into labor.
"I have two other kids and they both came very fast, and so we
knew that once things started, we needed to get moving," Tori told
WMUR TV-9. The couple called their midwife, and grandparents
were already watching the older children. But they were barely out of
the driveway when Tori Gelinas realized she was about to give birth.
That prompted them to turn around and call the midwife again.
"We came back up to the house, and (my husband) came around,"
she said. "One more push, and she was out." Avery June was born in
the front seat of the family's minivan.
"At first, it was a little hard for me to differentiate what was going
on," said midwife Kate Hartwell. "I could hear a lot of noise, and that
was right as Avery was being born."
The couple said they were stunned by their daughter's speedy
arrival.
"The light shut off on us, and stuff like that. I was trying to find the
dome light," Pete Gelinas said. "And when Kate said it sounded kind
of chaotic when she was on the phone with us, it was because I had
the phone upside down."
Tori Gelinas' father, Bruce, helped her and her husband get the
baby to the couch inside, while her mother, Iris, grabbed towels,
waiting for the midwife to arrive. Avery was healthy, at 6 pounds, 6
ounces and 20 inches long.
"Pete and I kind of sat here," Tori Gelinas said. "It was kind of like
Christmas after you open all your Christmas presents. We're just
kind of sitting here with a baby, and the kids were sleeping upstairs."
The children were excited to learn they had a little sister when
they woke up.
"She came down, and she was running around the downstairs saying, 'Yay, baby!'" Tori said. But the brother was a little more serious.
"And I said, 'She was born in the driveway by Daddy,'" Tori Gelinas
said. "He said, 'Babies don't come from the driveway.' Not typically."

A dragon puppet entertained people at the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen's Fair at Mount Sunapee Resort on August 2nd. Paul Howe photo.
New London Selectmen briefed on issues
New London Town Administrator Kim Hallquist brought the
selectmen up to date on severals issues at their July 29th meeting:
• The review of the Dispatch Center is proceeding on schedule and
the final report should be available by Labor Day.
• The preliminary designs for the Elkins Project have been submitted. She visited the Elkins Beach to see the area described as a
problem area due to boat parking and agrees that the area is very
small and she recommends a no docking sign be installed.
• A new meter, which measures how much New London waste
is being sent to the Sunapee Wastewater Treatment Plant, is being
installed; and Sunapee is installing its own meter.
• Frank Anzalone has provided a list of items to be included in a
Request for Proposal (RFP) for repairs needed for Whipple Hall.
• The bandstand has been spruced up and the Department of
Public Works is looking at structural issues.

Brown Memorial Library in Bradford
Hopkinton officials gathered last Thursday to break ground on the addition
to the Fire Station. Prior to this photo, Cathy Schaefer, widow of former Chief
Richard Schaefer, put the first shovel in the ground.
Hopkinton Selectmen and Chief discuss
Fire Department new equipment options
Hopkinton Fire Chief Doug Mumford met with the selectmen to
discuss the possible options for the equipment and staff to be out of
the building at 9 Pine Street during certain times of the upcoming
renovation. It was noted that the trailers used for office space cannot
be used as sleeping quarters for firefighters. Fire Chief Mumford stated there is the option of an addition to Station 3, located at 110 Main
St, Hopkinton. The addition consisting of 2 bunk rooms and office
space; and other options discussed were renting an RV or perhaps an
apartment in town. Fire Chief Mumford will look into all three. His
thoughts on an addition to Station 3 are that in the end, we would
have an addition but with the other options, the money goes for rent.
Cost for an addition would be around $23,000. Mumford stated the
tanker will have to be stored off site. Options were discussed. Mumford will return in two weeks with more information.
Henniker man arrested for sexual assault
Henniker Police have arrested a man accusing him of trying to
molest a young girl in April. Francis Rayno, 31, of Liberty Hill Road
was arrested on June 23rd. According to an affidavit filed in Hillsboro's District Court, the girl reported the crime to her mother in
April, saying Rayno slipped his hand down her underwear and tried
to touch her genitals one night while she was sleeping. She resisted,
but Rayno proceeded to embrace her inappropriately. Rayno was
convicted in 2010 of simple assault and in 1996 was charged with
aggravated felonious sexual assault, but was never indicted. He was
released on $10,000 personal recognizance bail pending a hearing
on September 5th.
Stoddard Historical Society receives grant
The Stoddard Historical Society has received a generous grant
from the New Hampshire Humanities Council to host Mr. Jack
Noon at the next historical society meeting on Friday, August 22,
following the covered-dish dinner for its members. The meeting will
be held at Lakefalls Lodge, 750 Aten Road, Munsonville, beginning
at 5 pm, with the presentation by Jack Noon to start at 7 pm. His
subject, “Four Centuries of Fishing in New Hampshire: Yankee
Character, Yankee Priorities,” runs the gamut of nets and spears to
the rise of many new fish species in New Hampshire. He has also
written several books on fishing in New Hampshire and the historical impact. Members and friends are invited to come. Any questions
– please contact: Jean Kelly, 446-7773.

Newbury resident complains of excessive fireworks noise
A Newbury resident received little satisfaction over her complaint at the Newbury
Selectmen's meeting on July 28th. The
woman asked that the town place restraints
on the use of fireworks. She related that she
is unable to sleep late at night because of the
loud noise which resembles the sound of
bombs. In concluding she said, "I question
the need for fireworks, there are other ways
to celebrate the Fourth of July." The Board
informed her that only the State of New
Hampshire has the authority over fireworks
laws and a bill to limit fireworks has already
been voted down by the legislature.
Town Administrator Dennis Pavlicek
suggested that she start a petition to be presented to New Hampshire representatives
for reconsideration. Newbury Health Officer
Wayne Whitford added those residents who
launch fireworks without a permit cause
most of the problems because they disregard the permit's.
Washington Concert August 24
Pianist Jayne Kelly will present a concert
of music by Mozart, Janacek, Chopin, Schubert, and Debussy at the Washington Congregational Church (Route 31) on Sunday,
August 24th at 7 p.m. The church is fully accessible, and parking is in the lot behind the
church. Donations will be welcomed. There
will be a reception after the concert.
With extensive renovations on schedule, Hillsborough's Ming Du Chinese Restaurant should be
moving into it's new West Main Street location soon.

Cyanobacteria warning closes Long Pond
The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (DES)
has issued a cyanobacteria lake warning for those who recreate on
Long Pond, Henniker, NH, due to extensive bluish-green patches of
cyanobacteria seen floating in the pond. The whole pond has shown
cloudy greenish-blue water, although during windy conditions, the
cyanobacteria may congregate in small sections of the pond. Direct
contact with the water is discouraged. Please continue to monitor your
individual shoreline for changing conditions.
This warning is intended as a precautionary measure to prevent
short term exposure to cyanobacteria toxins and is not based on a
toxin evaluation. DES advises lake users to avoid contact with the
water in areas experiencing a surface scum or blue-green clouds. DES also advises pet owners to keep their pets out of water that has a
surface scum or blue-green clouds. Once a cyanobacteria warning has
been issued, DES returns to affected waterbodies on a weekly basis
until the cyanobacteria bloom is not evident. Cyanobacteria are natural
components of water bodies worldwide, but blooms and surface scums
may form when excess phosphorus is available to the water. Some cyanobacteria produce toxins that are stored within the cells but released
upon cell death. Toxins can cause both acute and chronic health effects
that range in severity. Acute health effects include irritation of skin and
mucous membranes, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Chronic effects
include liver and central nervous system damage. THE
