making
this year a success.
This past year, we focused on expansion and reorganization, beginning with a new Constitution and
Bylaws which fully recognize our purpose in the
Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art and a new
mission statement which speaks to the Board of Directors’ desire to make an impact in the community and to ignite community engagement through
exceptional Canadian Art curation and education. The Smith Foundation and Artists for Kids, working collaboratively to program the Gordon Smith
Gallery, ensures that we have a gallery space
where education is not an afterthought in curation,
but the purpose of each step we take. Curation is a
pedagogical endeavour and arts education is integral to community participation.
During the school year the gallery displays the AfK
Collection in a Teaching Exhibition for school
groups, families and the general public. Each
year we select works from the collection that share
a common theme and speak to pertinent art historical, social, cultural, political or environmental
issues in a way that is accessible, sparks great con-

2014 Highlights:
•Our celebrated Summer Exhibition: Gu Xiong: a journey exposed. Internationally-known and celebrated Canadian artist, Gu Xiong transformed the gallery space and involved hundreds of students in the
creation of a new installation piece, A Pig’s River.
•
Work is Art, curated by Gordon Smith: We were honoured to bring Gordon Smith’s vision to life and
to support the artists and teachers whom he has worked so closely over the years with the Work is
Art exhibition in September 2014.
•New Public Programming: 2014 was the inaugural year for our Friends of the Gallery, Yoga in the Gallery, and Music in the Gallery Programs. We participated in Culture Days and developed partnerships
with local organizations and artists. We were also proud to collaborate with Artists for Kids to display the very last Capilano University Studio Grad Show in April 2014. This new programming is a large
part of meeting our new mission statement and generating excitement and interest in the North Vancouver community. North Vancouver is a distinct and vibrant community and we are happy to offer
thought-provoking programs for our neighbours.
•Two exceptional fundraising events: Our 11th annual Spring Luncheon “Rites of Spring” was held on
June 1, 2015 and our 3rd annual Gala “Palette to Palate” was held on October 15, 2015 – proceeds from
both supported art exhibitions and public education programs at the Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art as well as Artists for Kids programs.
