Annual Ice Cream Zoofari set for August 20, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Treat your taste
buds to a frozen extravaganza
by building your own ice cream
sundae or enjoy a cone or root
bear float—it’s your choice!
Admission for CALM members
is $10 adults and $8 for children
(3-12 years). For non-members
admission is $15 adults and $12 for
children (3-12 years).
Your Ice Cream Zoofari ticket
includes entrance to the zoo,
docents strolling the grounds,
free rides on the Central California
Children’s Railroad, and of course,
delicious ice cream. Back by
popular demand is the Dixie Nuts
Dixieland jazz band.

Beastly Ball elegantly returned to CALM
Chandeliers and candelabras greeted 200 guests as they
arrived for the return of the Beastly Ball to CALM. Musical
entertainment, Plein Air artists, silent auction and personal
meet and greet with CALM’s Ambassador Animals was a
prelude to a gourmet dinner and good company. The event
was a wonderful success.

CALM celebrates National Zoo Keeper Week July 17-23
The unsung heroes of any zoo are the Zoo Keepers (or Animal Keepers as they are called at
CALM). In honor of our Animal Keepers and those across the nation, CALM will reduce admission
fees to $5 adults and $3 for children (3-12 years old) during National Zoo Keeper Week July 17-23. A
variety of activities is planned for that week including meet and greets with the animal keepers.
Three hundred and sixty five days a year,
twenty four hours a day, seven days a week,
in all weather (from hurricanes, to blizzards, to
heat waves, and everything in between), keepers
have to be ready for anything. They are involved
in captive animals’ lives and welfare from birth
to death and every moment in between, and
often create life long bonds. A keeper’s day can
include an array of tasks including cleaning, food
preparation and feed out, medical treatment,

Most animal care professionals have bachelor
degrees or higher, many with advanced degrees, and continue to advance
their education by attending workshops, conferences, and certificate programs
annually. They are not just skilled laborers, but professionals who continue to
expand their knowledge of an ever advancing field. Working with animals requires
constant complex problem solving and progressive learning. Beyond their daily
duties, keepers are involved in research projects, field work, and conservation
organizations. And yet – most do not earn more than minimum wage, and some
even work second jobs.

CALM honored as “Best” in The
Bakersfield Californian Reader’s Poll
Once again, The Bakersfield
Californian readers chose the California
Living Museum as “Best of” in the Family
Attraction category and HolidayLights
at CALM received “Best of” in the Best
Annual Event category.
CALM has so much to offer: We
are a 14-acre zoo and garden and our
beautiful grounds have an abundance
of picnic areas as well as a children’s
playground. We are open seven days a
week to better serve our visitors.
Our annual events include Spring
Fling, CALM’s Birthday Bash, Ice Cream Zoofari, Boo-at-the-Zoo, Twilight at CALM
and HolidayLights at CALM. We also offer Kids Free Day (the last Saturday of the
month) and Senior Discovery Day (every Monday). Most recently, the Beastly Ball
returned to CALM.
Every year, thousands of school children visit this facility and learn about the
nature that surrounds them.
This past spring, CALM opened the Condor Challenge which features a 32-foot
climbing tower and ropes course.
Our Gift Store offers unique wildlife and nature-related gifts and souvenirs and
has something for everyone.
CALM turned 33 years old this year and we want the community to know that
this is your zoo. A dream of many local individuals who worked to open the facility
in 1983, CALM is a community jewel that we can all take pride in.
We would like to thank everyone who voted to give us both honors. You
inspire us to make CALM better for all to enjoy!
