The CALM Condor Challenge
Guests to CALM will be given the opportunity to reach new
heights as the zoo opens its latest attraction called Condor
Challenge.
The addition, which consists of Bakersfield’s only outdoor
rock-climbing tower and high-ropes challenge course, is
something totally different for CALM, says Kern County
Superintendent of Schools chief of staff Steve Sanders.
“It’s our first attempt at a recreational exhibit,” Sanders
said. “It’s one that will complement nicely what CALM already
offers — our animal and plant collection and our train.”
Condor Challenge is a couple years in the making and was
paid for through a grant awarded to KCSOS by the Carol M.
White Physical Education Program.
“Because we already have so many students visiting CALM
during the year, the project was a perfect fit,” Sanders said.
CALM enlisted the help of local rock-climber and outdoor
guide, Jeff Firkins. He recruited a team with experience
in climbing and working with groups to foster trust, selfconfidence, determination, cooperation, communication and
agility.
“Condor Challenge is about group bonding and promoting
team-work but also has an inherent component of selfchallenge,” Firkins said.
Condor Challenge is geared toward groups of up to 24
participants and is designed for the likes of youth and church
groups, businesses, non-profits, school clubs, youth and adult
sports teams and birthday parties. It is broken into various
high and low elements. The high ropes course involves a
series of elements that challenge participants to climb to
heights of more than 35 foot and maneuver across horizontal
obstacle like a single cable, nets, poles and an incomplete
bridge.
Low elements consist of six separate ground-level
components that involve balance and agility in which the
entire team’s participation is needed to achieve a set goal
Condor Challenge also features a 32-foot climbing tower
with two faces featuring a minimum of four distinct climbing
routes. The climbing facility is used as part of high/low ropes
packages, but is also available for individual use on weekends
and during special events.

It’s the California Living Museum’s 33rd Birthday Bash, Saturday, May 21, from 9
a.m.-4 p.m. Once again, we have a line-up of presentations and activities that will
provide entertainment for just about everyone!
In celebration of our 33rd Birthday, kids up to 12 years old are FREE with a paying
adult. As always, CALM members are admitted free.
Throughout the day, CALM’s Animal Keepers will provide wildlife presentations
and our docents will stroll the grounds with our ambassador animals. A variety of
nature-related and civic organizations will be on hand to provide party guests with
information and give-a-ways.
At noon, Steve Martin’s Working Wildlife featuring Jeff Lee will make a return
appearance with animals from around the globe.
Be sure to purchase a ticket (only $10) for CALM’s Condor Challenge Climbing
Tower.
The train will be running that day and tickets are only $1 per person. Hunsaker
Brothers Carnie Corn will have their food and beverage booth featuring kettle corn,
funnel cakes, hand-dipped corn dogs and shaved ice.
It won’t be a happy birthday without you! Please mark your calendars for
Saturday, May 21, and attend the festivities.

Taz and Lola, two endangered fishers — members of the weasel family — now
call the CALM home. The species has never before been exhibited at the 33-yearold zoo. The pair came from the Bramble Park Zoo, in South Dakota, and are part of
CALM’s breeding program.
“We are thrilled to have them in the collection,” said curator Don Richardson.
“The hope is that we will expand the number of this endangered species through
our breeding program.”
The secretive and intelligent fishers (Martes pennati) are only found in the
forests of North America. They are in the weasel family and related to wolverine
and martens. Males and females are similar in appearance but the males are larger.
Males are 35–47 inches in length and weigh 8–13 pounds. Females measure 30–37
inches and weigh 4–6 pounds.
Despite their name, fishers do not hunt or eat fish. Their main diet consists
of rabbits, rodents, birds, carrion, insects, and occasionally nuts and berries. The
scrappy fishers are the only forest carnivore to eat porcupine with regular success.
Fishers have few predators aside from humans.
Taz and Lola will be housed in CALM’s Mammal Round at the 14-acre zoo.

The Wildlife Rehabilitation Team assists our Animal Keepers caring for more than 600 injured or orphaned birds that come through CALM each year. Without our Wildlife Rehabilitation volunteers, it would

CALM Needs YOU to Volunteer
Volunteers are always
needed at the California Living
Museum. We have a variety
of volunteer opportunities
including Animal Keeper
Assistant, helping with our
Maintenance and Grounds
Department and Special Events.
Volunteer groups are also
welcome.

CALM Docents often venture offsite sharing their knowledge about wildlife
and promoting the zoo. Attending offsite events help with outreach to those in the
community who may have never visited CALM, or are new to the area.
Within the past few months, Docents have attended Read Across America/
Dr. Seuss Reading Day at numerous schools, Blessing of the Animals, Bakersfield
Condors Ice Hockey game and most recently the Grand Opening of Disney’s
Zootopia at the Maya Cinema.
We are grateful to our wonderful, dedicated Docent Team who make this happen!
In Memory of Harold DeWitz
Harold DeWitz, a CALM volunteer who donated his time and
energy toward the Central California Children’s Railroad, passed away
last November.
For the past seven years, you could count on Harold
(or “Robber Baron” as he was known to the train crew) to come
in Tuesdays and Thursdays to work on a variety of train-related
projects. Almost every night during HolidayLights, he was the train
engineer. Throughout the years, he gave thousands of CALM visitors
a wonderful experience as the “train robber” who would hold up the
train and hand out treats.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends and
his CCCR buddies.
Harold will be missed.
