The I Will Not Be Silent campaign achieved unprecedented community support and widespread recognition among government officials, city leaders, and the community at large. L AST YEAR WE L AUNCHED I am so proud of CALM’s efforts to lead the way in child abuse prevention in Santa Barbara County, and in building a safer and more nurturing community for children and families at risk… but we’ve only just begun. CALM will not be silent for as long as it takes to end child abuse in Santa Barbara County. The problems facing children in our County are acute. One in five children are living in poverty, domestic violence reports are growing, and public resources are shrinking. We are raising our voice about the needs of our children throughout all of Santa Barbara County. Now more than ever we need support from you—our generous donors, corporate partners, volunteers and community supporters—so that we may continue to address the critical needs of the growing population that we serve. Cecilia Rodriguez, MFT Cecilia Rodriguez, MFT Executive Director Let’s raise our voices together for the children who have had their voices taken away from them. Thank you to our devoted staff, who is collectively responsible for implementing CALM’s vital programs, as well as providing outstanding service to the most vulnerable in our community. I am incredibly proud of CALM’s work in preventing, treating, and assessing child abuse throughout Santa Barbara County. I a m h o n o red t o ser v e In 2009, CALM adopted a strategic plan which outlined our goals to expand our services in North County. In 2010 we opened an office in Santa Maria. To date, we have fifteen full time staff members working in Santa Maria, and eight staff members in Lompoc. Together those therapists serve children and families throughout northern Santa Barbara County. We used the strategic plan to guide our growth and take us to our current level of service. However, we know that 80% of the child abuse reports in our county come from north of the Gaviota tunnel, while only 20% of our staff is located there. The challenge in front of us is how to grow in a sustainable, thoughtful, and effective way to meet the needs of children and families throughout our county. To that end, we are beginning a new strategic planning process in the Fall of 2013. We know that we cannot change children’s lives without our community’s support. I am delighted to be leading the charge to expand our services while ensuring that we are effectively treating and preventing child abuse. I invite you to join us in our vital work. Our excellent outcomes are a result of the investment our community makes in our work. Your donations enable us to hire well-trained, culturally competent therapists to provide high quality interventions. Your support enables our staff to provide care to all those we touch. Jenny Kearns Board President Thank you for your commitment to CALM. I invite you to visit, volunteer, and donate. CALM’s Art Therapy Program has helped many victims of abuse, like “Angelica,” a 17-year-old girl who was sexually assaulted by an adult male relative when she was only 10. Angelica started drinking, doing drugs, failing school, and working hard to suppress her feelings. She was referred to CALM, where she began to work through her past in the Art Therapy Program. In treatment, Angelica was able to express deeply buried emotions and access the pain she had repressed for too many years. Through her paintings, she was able to free painful memories and move them from inside her mind to the exterior, where she could see them with more objectivity and ultimately, release them. After referral from Child Welfare Services, the Front Porch engagement specialist contacts these families, helps them identify which services might be helpful to them and then connects them to those services. This program is so successful that last year a second referral of Front Porch families to Child Welfare Services fell from a previous rate of 30% to 5%. CALM’s continuum of care enables us to prevent and treat child abuse. We assess our work regularly to make sure that we are successfully changing children’s lives. CALM employs evidence based practices—meaning that our therapeutic interventions have been studied, tested, and shown to be effective. CALM believes that every child deserves to be loved and no one should suffer from abuse or neglect. All our work is designed to strengthen families, provide health and safety for children and to build a world free of abuse. Great Beginnings – Prevention and Early Intervention Great Beginnings serves families with children aged 0 – 5 and is aimed toward prevention and early intervention. Great Beginnings programs include: • Prevention Early Intervention • Healthy Families home visitation •SafeCare • Postpartum support • Parents’ empowerment groups • Child-parent psychotherapy • Parent-Child Interaction Therapy • Pre-school Mental Health Consultation © Spotlight on: Domestic Violence Groups José is a large stuffed bear who attends one of our DV support groups. Like all of the children in this group, José lives in a home where there is fear and violence. By sharing with José and asking him questions, young clients learn to develop a safety plan and learn that they are not alone. They also learn healthy boundaries by treating José as another child in the group. 8 calm Annual Report 2012.2013 The Work We Do at calm Center-Based Treatment At our offices and community partner agencies, we serve children of all ages and their families who have experienced sexual abuse, violence in their home, or neglect. Center-based programs also work toward prevention by providing resources at local schools, and ending the cycle of violence and abuse. Center-based programs include: • Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy • Dialectical Behavior Therapy • Domestic Violence Therapy and support groups for children and parents • Art Therapy • Music Therapy • Play Therapy • School-based Prevention • Front Porch Whatever it Takes This hands-on program works with children and families in the Foster Care system and in chaotic homes to strengthen family ties and provide consistent support for children through age 21. The WIT team’s heroes truly do whatever is needed to help a child persevere through difficult times, including cleaning homes, waking kids up and getting them to school, meeting with school counselors and principals, and teaching life skills. WIT programs include: Spotlight on: Pre-school Mental Health Consultation CALM is leading our community in mental health consultation in local preschools. Pioneered in collaboration with Storyteller Children’s Center, CALM provides support which enables teachers to increase their capacity to work with high risk children. CALM therapist, Donna Richards, oversees this program which is now in four schools. One teacher said, “I didn’t realize I was suffering from vicarious trauma, working with the students I care for so much. Before Donna came, I was stressed and short tempered. Now, I have more patience and more tools for working with my kids. I feel supported and heard. Thank you CALM for providing this important service.” • Children Affected by Methamphetamine (CAM) • Families in Recovery Embracing Sobriety and Health (FRESH) •SPIRIT • Helping Others in Parenting Environments (HOPE) • Intensive In-Home Therapy 9 calm Auxiliary an instrumental role in sustaining the great legacy of CALM and ensuring the vital work of the organization for over 40 years.
