This spring, three Desert bighorn lambs were born at CALM. The photo above was
taken when they were two days old.
Bleach
Three endangered Desert bighorn lambs were born at the California Living
Museum. All three births occurred with 48 hours of each other (April 29 and May
1). All ewes and lambs are doing well.
Esther (11 years old)-This is her tenth lamb which is one of the females. She
is a wonderful mother and the lead ewe in the herd.
Emma (four years old)-This is her second lamb and she gave birth to the
male.
Diane (two years old)-This is her first lamb (female). Diane was also the first
lamb born at CALM (her mother is Esther).
Banner (seven years old)-The proud father is a little overwhelmed but doing
just fine!
Three years ago, CALM received two ewes from the San Diego Wild Animal
Park and one ram from the Los Angeles Zoo. This is CALM’s first cooperative
breeding program partnership.
From the 2014 census, CALM is home to seven of only 47 Desert bighorn
sheep on display throughout the country.

Our annual events include
Spring Fling, CALM’s Birthday Bash, Ice Cream Zoofari, Boo-at-the-Zoo, Twilight at
CALM, Feast for the Beasts, and HolidayLights at CALM. We also offer Kids Free Day
(the last Saturday of the month) and Senior Discovery Day (every Monday).
Every year, thousands of school children visit this facility and learn about
the nature that surrounds them.
Our Gift Store offers unique wildlife and nature-related gifts and souvenirs
and has something for everyone.
CALM turned 32 years old this year and we want the community to know
that this is your zoo. A dream of many local individuals who worked to open the
facility in 1983, CALM is a community jewel that we can all take pride in.
We would like to thank everyone who voted to give us both honors. You
inspire us to make CALM better for all to enjoy!

Senior Discovery Day
Each Monday,

Last March, CALM graduated the Docent and Wildlife Rehabilitation class of
2015.
The Docent and Biofact Docent Programs are vital to educational outreach for
CALM. Our seasoned Docents mentor new graduates, plan animal enrichment,
interact with the public, conduct exhibit observations and serve as good will
ambassadors for the zoo.
We proudly acknowledge the following for completing the seven week course
and actively joining the Docent Team: Natalie Bernhart, Pam Bernhart, Angel
Correra, Cherri Duran, Ronald Duran, Gariela Facio, Reginald Flores, Cristal Fuller,
Alexander Harrison, Kiersten Humphries, Kelly Lee, Samantha Neymark, Zacharia
Staver, April Tolle and Kristen Steele-Watt.
The Wildlife Rehabilitation Team assists our Animal Keepers caring for more
than 600 injured or orphaned birds that come through CALM each year. Without
our Wildlife Rehabilitation volunteers, it would be almost impossible to manage
a successful program. We proudly acknowledge the following for completing
the three week course and actively joining the Wildlife Rehabilitation Team: Ben
Cava, Peter Eastwood, Cristal Fuller, Joaquin Gonzalez, Berkley Hanley, Joy Hollins,
Kiersten Humphries, Cheryl Kautzman, Myka Kuster, Dianna McElwain, Alex
Moreno, Salena Kroeger-Phillips, Jeff Richwood, Alaura Silas, Sean Stephens and

William and Florence Wheeler Foundation
donates $25,000 for CALM’s California Coast Room
The California Living Museum is thrilled to announce a $25,000 donation from the William and Florence
Wheeler Foundation for the California Coast Room.
The new exhibit will be in the Education Center and feature a touch tank and jellyfish tank.
Renovations to the entire Center and Gift Store will include new flooring, painting, plumbing for the tanks
and signage. Completion of the project is estimated for early 2016.
William and Florence Wheeler were longtime supporters of CALM. Their legacy of giving continues
through their Foundation and through their daughter Nancy Wheeler-Smith.
“Thank you” doesn’t quite convey our appreciation for this wonderful gift. The animals and this
community are the true beneficiaries of the William and Florence’s generosity.
