BevltHllTfitinn Of A Running Club
Two years ago. when I became president, the club had approximately 50 members and, at best,
only 10 of these participated regularly. Doug Brown and Janice Reid did everything for the
club. Even the weekly Wednesday night runs had sparse showings. The main conversation
during runs was how much people hated their jobs and were so overworked and underpaid. We
were best known for being the running club that owned its clock and timing system. It was
often asked why we had a clock and larger clubs, such as Central Jersey, did not have their
own. Gone were the early days of our club, when Wednesday meant running with our group of
professionals and the academic community of Rutgers University and the accompanying
stimulating conversations and positive attitudes.
The last two years brought some highly visible and positive growth in the club. Membership
has doubled and active participation is about 50% of the membership. That is staggering.
Outside of a college fraternity, few organizations can get half of its members to participate in
its activities. And the talent that we have now is astonishing. We truly have blended the best
of the old and new. Long time, valuable members Allen Paul, Bruce Nadler, Rick Pangborn,
Peter Fama and especially Doug and Janice continue to work hard for the club. And with the
addition of so many new, talented members who are also successful career professionals, we
again look and function like a first rate running club. We have shaken out the pessimism that
affected the club and now have a positive and amicable group. The point when I knew that the
club had come full circle occurred this summer, when two members were running on a
Wednesday at a 6:30 pace while having an in-depth conversation on English Comparative
Literature.
1991 was the best year ever for the club. Groups runs often surpassed 40 people. The
Summer Series had its largest and deepest field in its eight year history. We had several
successful overnight road trips to races in Cape May, Atlantic City and Kutztown. RVRR staged
the grandest and most successful event in our history, the East Brunswick 10K. We revived
this once popular, but lately, failing race that nearly disappeared when the East Brunswick
Social Runners gave it up. In this race, we increased the number of entries by more than 307S
in a year when most races had drastically lower numbers. We also raised and donated over
$1000.00 to charity. The ability of our runners, both male and female, is at the best level
ever. At races, our members often dominate the awards ceremony. And as I write, newcomer
Mark Zamek is organizing a High Point to Cape May relay run. Though this event is outside the
purview of our club this will be a great personal achievement for Mark and those from RVRR
who participate in it.
RVRR is a very different club than it was 2 to 3 years ago. We are a progressive, productive
and amiable group that enjoys running, working and life in general! It is satisfying to be
working with a group of such talented, professional people who have healthy, positive views on
life and are desirous of cooperating with their fellow runners. Thank you to all the old
members, who persevered through our tough times and continued to work for the club. Thanks
to all of our many new members who have brought their talent, spirit and cooperation to us.
Collectively, we now have the finest social running club in New Jersey.
As we approach 1992, RVRR will become even more prolific. We will continue to encourage
participation in running and make the sport more enjoyable. We encourage all of you who have
been away from the club to come back and see how much we now have to offer and the great
group of people who now represent Raritan Valley! Hope to see you December 13 at the Holiday
party.
Happy Holidays and Healthy Running To All!
