Seen from the sky, it is like a green oasis fringed with
blue and its tall white pyramids are its main feature.
Located on the shores of the Mediterranean, it is as
unique as a dream. It was a work of visionary architecture by Jean Balladur, inspired by nature, by
the outline of Pic Saint Loup on the horizon and by
the architect’s amazement at the sight of the Aztec
pyramids in Mexico.
La Grande Motte was designed in total harmony with
the sun, the beach and the environment. To encourage
people to get the most out of life, it includes wide open
spaces, terraces and extensive parklands, miles of pedestrian footpaths, a multitude of carefully-conceived
amenities, high-quality accommodation and disabled
access to many of the infrastructures etc.
The seaside resort has been described with every possible superlative and now, with a certain emotion, it
has celebrated its 40th birthday. “France’s answer to
Florida“ provides relaxation, leisure, sports and water
sports throughout the year.
When you come to La Grande Motte, you are coming

The Sea
Located on the shores of Aigues-Mortes
Bay between Sète and Le Grau-du-Roi, La
Grande Motte offers a magnificent marina with 1,452 moorings for yachts and
pleasure craft, open all year.
The town is passionate about the sea and
the inspiration it offers. A wide range of
water sports and other activities is available here. There are so many different things
to do and so many mouth-watering treats
awaiting you throughout your stay here.
La Grande Motte is intensely Mediterranean, with links to water in all its forms.
Its 7-kilometre stretch of fine sand is a
vast beach that slopes gently down to the
sea, ideal for swimming and games for
all ages, while providing parents with a
sense of well-being.

As Europe’s leading “green” resort, La
Grande Motte fully deserves the praises it
receives and its claim that it has a character all its own. Nature is part and parcel of
the town, giving balance, a healthy environment, comfort and beauty for all those
who come here.
This “environmental” purpose was introduced by its founders and it has been
fully taken on board by the town for more
than forty years. This has resulted today
in a remarkable situation since 70% of
the town’s total area of 1,500 hectares
consists of greenery!
The Green Town offers 22 kilometres of
car-free paths for walking and cycling,
running right into the centre of the town.
When it comes to the environment, nothing is left to chance. Air and water
quality is monitored, a selective domestic
waste system has been introduced, there
is a clean harbour scheme, and the carefully-protected beaches boast a number
of amenities.
Far from being a concrete jungle of a resort, La Grande Motte is an oasis of cool
greenery, a place where life is sweet, in
harmony with nature.

Things to do
In addition to the many activities based in and around water, La Grande Motte
provides sports and relaxation in buildings with high-level equipment. The town is
full of the sporting spirit.
In the depths of the pine forest are 32 tennis courts including 5 indoor, 2 clay and
a mini-tennis.
Is golfing more your thing? Whether you’re a complete beginner or a more advanced player, there are 3 courses including the famous 18-hole international course
designed by American architect, Robert Trent Jones, and 85 hectares of greens
and fairways.
The riding stables in La Grande Motte provide lessons and courses for riders of all
levels of skill in addition to hacks in a unique setting for riding fans.
And if your preference goes to fitness without too much effort, let yourself be spoilt
in the Institute of Thalassotherapy set in breathtaking surroundings.
There is plenty to appeal to young visitors too e.g. concerts, festivities, free street
and beach entertainment, roundabouts, games arcades, cyber-cafés, discos and
“Le Grand Bleu”, an aquatic leisure complex open all year.

Whatever the season and whatever you want to do,
La Grande Motte provides a superb backdrop.
A brief overview of the special events will give you
a foretaste of the local ambience and the vivid
colours that make for great fun.
Spring marks the opening of the season and, in
April, the town hosts 1,2,3, Fiesta, street entertainments in the various districts of the town to mark the
start of the season.
To ensure that the season is exceptional, the Tourist Office and Town Council have planned a programme of high-quality events including “Cinétoile”
(cinema under the stars), concerts in the Théâtre
de Verdure (open-air theatre), the Golden Nights
festival of fireworks and music, the Summer
Carnival etc.
The outstanding hours of sunshine in La Grande
Motte enable the private beaches to open from
April to October. They offer upmarket services that
combine comfort and relaxation by day with a
great atmosphere and fun in the evenings.
In fact, throughout the year, La Grande Motte is
the place for Cinema, Theatre, Jazz Concerts, Art
Exhibitions etc.
