Winter 2011 - Birkbeck, University of London
The Birkbeck effect
Your gift, our future
Winter 2011
Welcome from the Master
Thank you
If you are one of the many people who have given generously to the College
in the last academic year, we thank you. Your donations have a huge impact
and make a difference both to Birkbeck students and the life of the College.
Professor David
Latchman CBE
The world of higher education is
on the verge of a major shift.
In the last few months we
have come to learn of changes
that will affect students for
years to come. Looking back,
it has been a strategically
important year for Birkbeck and
we have lobbied hard to gain
parity for the part-time sector
as well as secure the long-term
future of the College.
This year Birkbeck was
shortlisted for the Times
Higher Education University of
the Year award and the College
appeared for the first time in
the Times Higher Education top
200 universities in the world,
above, for example, several
large Russell group Universities
such as Leeds, Liverpool and
Nottingham. As the Editor of
the THE said: “The top 200
Universities in the world
represent only a tiny fraction of
world higher education and any
institution that makes it into
this table is truly world class.”
We would like to thank our
alumni donors, friends and
volunteers who have enabled
us to establish such a strong
position. Leadership donations
have modernised facilities such
as the molecular biology
laboratories through a gift from
the Wolfson and Maurice Wohl
Foundations or launched major
research centres, such as the
new Institute for the Study of
Anti-semitism funded by the
Pears Foundation. All donations
increase our ability to provide
world class facilities and
resources for both students
and academics.

A year of fundraising
at Birkbeck
Fundraising at Birkbeck is
flourishing. Thanks to the
support of alumni, charitable
trusts and friends we raised
over £3.6million in the last
financial year. This total
includes: a transformational
£1million gift from the Garfield
Weston Foundation to support
the development of our building
in Stratford, the completion of
multi-year pledges from the
Wolfson and Maurice Wohl
Foundations and a number of
five and six figure gifts from
senior alumni and friends of
the College.
The support of our alumni
continues to be an essential
component of Birkbeck’s
fundraising. Last year 1,186
former students donated to the
Alumni Fund, with half choosing
to make regular gifts. Together
alumni have given a record
£115,000 which has been
used to alleviate student
hardship and improve services
and facilities. With gifts
ranging from £2 to £4,000,
it is the collective support
that really stands out and is
greatly appreciated.
The College received a
record number of pledges from
those who intend to remember
Birkbeck in their wills. Gifts
received from legacies help to
secure the financial health and
security of the College in the
future. Past donations have
resulted in cutting-edge,
internationally recognised
research as well as enabled
hundreds of students to take
advantage of the opportunities
that Birkbeck offers.
Our fundraising achievements
ensure that we can continue to
meet our objectives to develop
the campus to support
excellence in teaching and
research; make higher
education accessible to
students for whom money is a
genuine barrier to education;
and deliver an outstanding
student experience with
teaching from world class
academics. The chart below
shows how donations in the
last academic year have been
spent in these three key areas.
It is perhaps pertinent to
note that Birkbeck has been
engaged in fundraising since
its inception. During the
College centenary in 1923
a fundraising publication
outlined the primary aim of
Birkbeck, one which still
resonates today.
Thank you for your
commitment and support in
the last academic year –
Birkbeck is truly grateful
for your help.

Building Birkbeck
Green light for
Stratford
Planning permission has been
given for the new shared
education building being
developed in Stratford, in
partnership with the University
of East London (UEL). Birkbeck
and UEL have also signed a
new memorandum of
understanding to work in
partnership to improve
participation in Higher
Education in east London by
attracting new students who
would not otherwise consider
going to university.
The building will create
shared teaching facilities
for both higher education
institutions and their partners,
which will include Newham
Sixth Form College (New Vic)
and the Theatre Royal Stratford
East. A range of departments
from each university will be
housed in the building,
alongside dedicated spaces
for subjects including Law,
Performing Arts, Dance, Music
and Information Technology.
The Master, Professor David
Latchman CBE, commented:
“Our two universities have
been working together since
2007, increasing the flexible,
part-time study opportunities
to the people of east London.
This building will create an
education centre which
4
encourages access and
progression into higher
education for local people,
supporting the economic
regeneration of the area.
The university centre will be
for use by all members of the
community, regardless of their
prior educational attainments;
it will offer them the
opportunity to acquire
skills that are needed for a
rapidly changing local and
regional economy.”
The proposed building is
central to London Thames
Gateway Development
Corporation and Newham
Borough Council’s plans to
transform the area surrounding
the site into a new cultural
quarter for east London. Work
is expected to start in August
2011, with the building
completed and operational
for the start of the academic
term in autumn 2013.
Birkbeck is seeking to raise
£3million to complete funding
for the new building. Over one
third of that has already been
secured through a £1million
donation from the Garfield
Weston Foundation, gifts from
alumni and Birkbeck’s former
Chair of Governors.

Making higher education
accessible to all
Opportunities
for students
continue to grow
For nearly a third of our
students, lack of finance
remains a major barrier to
attending university. Over 1000
students studying at all levels
were supported through gifts
from charitable trusts,
individuals and former Birkbeck
students in the last year.
Lola Aladeshelu is one of the
many students who received
financial support throughout
her degree. She joined Birkbeck
in 2005 to study Law and gain
a professional qualification
while continuing to work full
time. Without the support of
the Exilarch’s Foundation which
contributed to her fees, she
would not have been able to
complete her course:
“I wouldn’t be here without
the bursary which gave me
an extra boost and the
determination to succeed.
I lacked the confidence to
undertake degree level study
but I had always been aware
of Birkbeck and the support
I got was far beyond my
expectations. The staff were
fantastic, they were there for
me when I was going through
both highs and lows.”
At the Scholars’ Evening in
2009, Lola thanked the donors
present for their commitment
to the College and outlined
her plans for the future. Lola
has been truly bitten by the
Birkbeck bug and is now
studying for a postgraduate
degree in Journalism: “Birkbeck
is a special place, a university
like no other. When I am at the
College it just feels like it is
where I should be. The
opportunities it has given me
have enabled me to take a step
forward in life towards my
career aspirations.” At her
graduation in November, Lola
reflected: “Walking across the
6
(L–R) Professor David Latchman CBE, Pro-Vice Master Tricia King, Lola Aladeshelu, David Dangoor
and Lord Noon at Scholars’ Evening
stage to shake the Master’s
hand and celebrating with my
family and friends it is one of
the happiest days of my life.”
Of the £680,000 provided for
student financial support in the
last year significant donations
were provided by the Noon
Foundation and the Man Group
plc Charitable Trust to support
students studying at Stratford;
the Richard Reeves Foundation
support for students living in
the City of London was ongoing;
SNR Denton’s support for
postgraduate students
continued for its third year; the
Guildford Academic Associates
initiated a scheme to support
“It has given me a
second chance in
life. With the help of
the bursary I can
achieve my dreams.”
Sharon Elliott, Psychology
Birkbeck’s Science students;
the Leverhulme Trust and the
Exilarch’s Foundation continued
their loyal support of
undergraduates and Cyril
Dennis MBE remained a
generous benefactor to the
Student Opportunity Fund. One
quarter of the sum raised by
the Alumni Fund also provided
financial support to those
students who need it most.
“My bursary has
taught me that,
irrespective of your
background, you
can do anything if
you work hard
enough. Through
this bursary I have
learnt that there
are people who
truly care.”

Delivering a great student
experience
Alumni Fund
supports My
Birkbeck Centre
Birkbeck has always been
committed to ensuring students
have the best possible learning
experience to enable them to
achieve their educational goals.
This aim is reflected in
College’s fundraising priorities
and with donations from
charitable trusts and
foundations, as well as
generous contributions from
the Alumni Fund, we have been
able to make progressive
changes and improvements
to the student experience.
Most notably, Birkbeck
opened the My Birkbeck
Student Support Centre in
September 2009. This ‘one
stop shop’ aims to simplify
every student’s journey from
first enquiry through to
graduation. The centre offers
face-to-face advice, information
and access to support
services across the College
and is open during the day, in
the evenings and at weekends.
This advance in student
support would not have been
possible without donations
from former students.
With the help of larger
donations from charitable
trusts and foundations the
College has been able to
introduce further initiatives to
help the transition into studying
for students who are new to
higher education or returning to
learning. Many students who
seek academic help at the My
Birkbeck centre are pointed in
the direction of the Study Skills
Support team who facilitate
one-to-one help and online
training to students who wish
to develop essential skills in
essay writing, numeracy,
research and presenting.
The Rayne Foundation has
supported a web based training
project aimed at those wishing
to improve their mathematic
skills, focusing on those who
have been out of education for
some time. This interactive
programme enables students
to work at their own pace and
access the guides externally.
The Esmée Fairbairn
Foundation continued to fund
work with non-traditional
students who might not
normally consider entering
higher education. The College
targets mature students in east
London and partners with local
organisations such as nurseries
and community groups to
provide entry level courses
for single mothers and other
under-represented groups.
Now in its fourth year, the
project has contributed to
rapidly increasing student
number in east London.
Without the funding provided
by such generous gifts from
our alumni, friends and
supporters, Birkbeck would
not be the institution it is
today. Thanks to the support
of so many who believe in
Birkbeck’s mission, we
continue to deliver a great
student experience and
fulfil our commitment to
helping ambitious individuals
change their lives.

Volunteers
Alumni volunteers
demonstrate their
commitment to Birkbeck
Over the last year, Birkbeck’s
alumni volunteering programme
has gone from strength to
strength with a record number
of graduates giving up their free
time to help at College events.
From giving talks at Open
Evenings to mentoring current
students, our alumni have
shown real commitment.
This comes as welcome
news for Birkbeck. Carly-Dee
Stewart, the Alumni Officer who
oversees the volunteering
programmes explains: “We are
delighted to see so many
alumni keen to volunteer.
For a unique institution like
Birkbeck, our former students
truly understand how to
balance study with working
and family life. We really value
their input at events, such as
open evenings and induction
days. Their advice helps to
put anyone considering coming
to Birkbeck at ease about
managing part-time study.”
For many of our alumni,
welcoming new students to
Birkbeck is great way to give
something back to the College
and its students. “I remember
my own hesitation before
registration, especially in
terms of time management,
but overall, studying at
Birkbeck was a positive turning
point in my life. Volunteering
has given me the opportunity
to share this experience
with other students in the
same position and express
my enthusiasm for the
College,” said former
student Lynette Spencer.
The feedback from students
has been overwhelmingly
positive: “I was very impressed
with the former students’
talk. It was interesting to
listen to another student’s
experiences and very
reassuring to hear that
studying part-time and fulfilling
other commitments can be
done. I came away from the
talk feeling even more
enthusiastic about my course,
and far less worried! Hard
work yes, but do-able!”
In light of this success
and the increasing popularity
of the volunteer programme,
the alumni team will build
upon the current range and
number of volunteering
opportunities available during
the year. These will include
an expansion of the mentoring
scheme and activity at
Open Evenings, giving many
more alumni the chance to
make a difference to
Birkbeck’s students.
