Annual Report 2014
We seize each day’s opportunity to provide better care to our community. Dear Friends and Supporters: At Whitman-Walker Health (WWH), we seize each day’s opportunity to provide better care to our community. This was the key line of our cultural norms that we collectively developed during 2014 to ensure intentionality behind our performance and each other. 2014 was a year where we continued laying the groundwork for the significant organizational growth that would take place in 2015. This included steady progress on our 43,000-square-foot facility at 1525 14th Street, NW, which opened in May 2015. However, 2014 was not exactly a year of calm before a frenzy of activity in 2015. It was a year where we re-named our signature AIDS Walk to the Walk to End HIV, becoming the first AIDS Walk in the country to make that shift. It was also a year where Whitman-Walker’s groundbreaking research on real-world use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (or PrEP) for HIV prevention and on new hepatitis C therapies had national implications. And it was a year where our pro bono legal services department served the legal needs of 2,500 people in 4,000 different cases. Overall, in 2014, we provided service to nearly 15,000 people. We are proud to have been recognized as a Top Workplace by The Washington Post. We were also recognized for the fourth year in a row by Human Rights Campaign Foundation as a Leader in Healthcare Equality and by the Washington Blade’s Best of Gay D.C. as Best Nonprofit. We finished the year with $36,361,566 in total revenue, and the work of our team of employees and volunteers led us to another great year in terms of quality of care scores. The pages that follow further share the accomplishments of 2014. Thank you for your continued support and commitment. With sincere gratitude, Mark Edward, Board Chair Don Blanchon, Executive Director Those seeking comprehensive, quality health care at Whitman-Walker Health came from all across D.C. and the metropolitan area. Nearly 70 percent of our patients came from D.C., while 15 percent came from Maryland and 11 percent came from Virginia. The name change “reflects a cataclysmic shift to what HIV is today – a chronic, manageable disease,” said Don Blanchon at the time of the announcement. This name change was made largely because there is significant stigma associated with the term AIDS, and this stigma serves as a significant barrier to testing, prevention, and keeping people in care. So much has changed in the three-plus decades of the HIV epidemic: no longer is AIDS a death sentence. Far from it, in fact. As Chief Medical Officer Dr. Raymond Martins said in a news release announcing the name change, “from the time I started training to become a doctor in the late 1990s to now, the advances in HIV treatment, prevention, and delivery of care have been remarkable.” Now, we know that addressing the HIV epidemic is about caring for the health and well-being of the whole person. We also know that with increased testing and treatment we can prevent HIV infections. So changing the name of our signature Walk was a statement of hope and optimism. It was an attempt to move away from the stigma that surrounds AIDS. It was also a way to focus attention on getting us to that ultimate finish line - providing care for all who are HIV-positive and getting to zero new infections. Even without a cure or vaccine, through testing, early detection, and a comprehensive care plan, we know we can get there. Groundbreaking Research Conducted at Whitman-Walker Health Whitman-Walker Health’s Research Department continued to be a leader in examining new ways to prevent and treat diseases, including HIV, hepatitis, and STIs. Two groundbreaking studies that Whitman-Walker researchers completed in 2014 were the following: -PrEP Demonstration Project: Though the medication Truvada as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention has been FDA-approved for this use since 2012, it wasn’t until this NIH-funded study’s completion in 2014 that we had clear, incontrovertible evidence that this intervention would be effective outside of a clinical setting among the population that needs it most in the United States: men who have sex with men. In a study conducted at four sites in the U.S. (including among 100 men enrolled at Whitman-Walker), researchers found that the majority of those in the study consistently took the medication to prevent HIV infection. Research Director Dr. Richard Elion, a study leader, noted in a Voice of America article that the study added to a growing body of research indicating that PrEP is a powerful “additional tool to prevent HIV.” Nicholas Gourdine, a participant in the study at Whitman-Walker, told The Washington Post in an article published in November that PrEP is helping to save lives and that “it’s been a factor in saving my life too – not just physically but also emotionally.” Findings from this PrEP study and an STD study were presented at the 20th International AIDS Conference in Melbourne, Australia. -New Drugs Cure Hepatitis C: Whitman-Walker has conducted multiple studies that evaluate cutting-edge hepatitis C therapies — pills and that can cure the disease in as few as eight weeks. Two drugs from studies conducted at Whitman-Walker would later win FDA approval, including Harvoni in 2014. In December, Vox.com profiled a Whitman-Walker patient who received another new hepatitis drug that was studied at Whitman-Walker, Sovaldi, and noted his remarkable cure in just 12 weeks. Philip Mason, the patient, noted that he kept thinking the disease would come back. “But each time they test me, it’s undetectable.” PrEP Forum Held at George Washington University In September, Whitman-Walker Health co-hosted a forum on PrEP, in front of a packed house at George Washington University. The event was live streamed online to hundreds, and the archived live stream has been viewed thousands of times. Participants included Whitman-Walker Health Research Director Dr. Richard Elion, AIDS Healthcare Foundation President Michael Weinstein, and Dazon Dixon Diallo of SisterLove, Inc. Left to Right: Dazon Dixon Diallo, Christopher Chauncey Watson, Dr. Richard Elion and Michael Weinstein Broadening Your Horizons through Volunteering After completing Whitman-Walker’s addictions services (WWAS) program in June 2009, Michael Scott wanted to give back to the Whitman-Walker family. WWAS is a six-month, abstinence-based group that educates clients on substance abuse, avoiding relapse and addressing mental health issues. “If you get something, you should be giving back,” Michael said in a recent interview. He had been taking peer counseling training when Whitman-Walker approached him to facilitate the WWAS alumni group, a peer-facilitated support group for outpatient or intensive program “graduates” as they continue their recovery journey. Michael took on the role of volunteer facilitator in August 2011 and loved it. It kept him in touch with his own recovery while also allowing him to help others continue their individual journeys. He felt privileged to give back because “the WWAS program was a lifesaver for me.” “Volunteering takes you out of your own head and builds empathy and understanding,” said Michael about his experience. “You engage with people who have different experiences from your own.” Volunteering broadened Michael’s world, but it also helped us fulfill our mission as an organization. We are so thankful to Michael for his four years of volunteer service to the Whitman-Walker Health family. Ugandan Trans Activist Granted Asylum in U.S. In October, Whitman-Walker Health’s Legal Services Department announced that it had secured final asylum approval for prominent Ugandan LGBT activist Nikilas (Nikki) Mawanda. “The asylum process and the four months I had to wait anxiously were very emotionally taxing for me, but I’m so relieved this day has finally come,” said Nikilas Mawanda in a press release. “The reality is that I’m one of the lucky ones. So many asylum seekers have to wait many more months or even years before getting final approval. The process desperately needs to be streamlined and asylum seekers better supported if the U.S. is to live up to its values.” Mawanda was one of four LGBT foreign nationals for whom WhitmanWalker Health secured asylum in 2014. 1525 14th Street, NW Gets Ever Closer to Opening Steady progress was made throughout the year on Whitman-Walker Health’s future medical home at 1525 14th Street, NW. Tours started being conducted mid-way through the year, and those who walked through the space, even when it was just a shell, could tell it was going to be something special. What impressed me more was your representation of ‘customer service’, which in today's world seems to be a lost act. I am very touched that you went the extra mile to assist me. Being a senior, I remember that such outstanding customer service was a normal expectation back in my younger days but seems to be a lost human behavior today. Thank you. ” Your act of kindness will never be forgotten. Patient comment September 2014 As with donors, our volunteers work toward a common goal. Enthusiastic, reliable and thoughtfully linked to our mission, their service makes a recognizable difference. Sheehy Jule Slagle Harriet and Irving Malitson worked as scientists for the federal government and had one child in their immediate family. Irving was a physicist with the old National Bureau of Standards in the Department of Commerce while Harriet was an astronomer with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the Department of Commerce. They were both instrumental pioneers in their respective fields. Their son, Paul Henry Malitson, sought and received quality care from WhitmanWalker in the early 90’s. Paul Henry died in 1993 from complications from AIDS at the age of 40. In 1996, the Malitson’s became annual donors to WWH and funded the x-ray room in the Elizabeth Taylor Medical Center in honor and memory of Paul.
