Magical creations pop out everywhere during the second weekend of August at the three-dimensional art paradise of Loveland. It’s hard to imagine a better name for a city where the people are so madly in love with their art, and the artists are so madly in love with the city. Art is a year-round romance for this thriving Front Range community, and Loveland’s Summer of Love is back in all its passion Aug. 9-11. Nearly 4,500 pieces are on display across the city – a wondrous array of oddly beautiful and beautifully odd creations of bronze and other metals, stained glass, wood, stone, classic Colorado marble from the town of Marble and even carvings from antlers. Art celebrations and glorious statues are fixtures here all year long, but Sculpture Weekend is when Loveland becomes ed, nor can the role of persistent art supporters throughout the community.” The festival that now flourishes was formed in 1984 with the first Sculpture in the Park celebration. Now in its 30th year, it will showcase 160 acclaimed sculptors and 2,000 pieces in what has become the largest juried sculpture show in the nation, with more than $1 million in sales. The show will once again be held at the amazing Benson Sculpture Garden, where there are 139 permanent sculptures in this 10-acre park. Year-round art in Benson Sculpture Garden is maintained with proceeds from Sculpture in the Park. The garden is recognized as one of the 20 must-see FREE Keepsake Issue! For Juneau, perhaps even more stunning than the sculptures themselves is the growth of what three decades ago was a distant dream cherished by city planners and the arts community. “No one ever imagined that their dream would turn into such a nationally acclaimed reality, ” Juneau said. “And, they certainly never envisioned that over the course of 30 years, they would also create a living legacy in the form of Benson Sculpture Garden. ” Just a short walk from Sculpture in the Park is its neighbor, the 22nd Annual Loveland Sculpture Invitational, which kicks off the sculpting marathon on Friday, Aug. 9, with a three-day show at Loveland High School. This is the largest outdoor sculpture show in the United States. The show hosts more than 200 sculptors from 30 states, with an eclectic mix that includes works from its famed Big Three founders, world-renowned bronze sculptors George Lundeen, Victor Issa and Lee Stark, as well as promising artists like Loveland native and firefighter Austin Weishel, who at 23 is one of the youngest sculptors to create a monument in Washington, D.C. The invitational’s main sponsor is the nonprofit Loveland Sculpture Group, which because of the festival has been able to donate 30 sculptures valued at $275,000 to the Loveland community, plus $252,500 total to Thompson School District art education programs. PHOTO BY: JOSH HARDIN/COLORADO LIFE PHOTO BY: JOSH HARDIN/COLORADO LIFE 50 50 With the sun on our skin and the fresh Colorado air soaking into our lungs, Loveland offers diverse outdoor recreation you love. Or, if your creativity is flowing, go play throughout Loveland by viewing incredible works of art in our museums, parks and galleries; attend a lively program through one of our performing art venues or catch the latest movie in a stateof-the art movie theater. Whatever you choose, your adventure begins in Loveland. The key is to respect the wildness of wildlife. “Wildlife” is just that—wild. Most dangerous and potentially harmful encounters occur because people fail to leave animals alone. Wildlife should not be harassed, captured, domesticated or fed. Intentional or inadvertent feeding is the major cause of most wildlife problems. It is illegal to feed deer, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, pronghorn and elk in Colorado. Contact the local Colorado Parks & Wildlife office at 970-472-4300 for information regarding big game species like deer, elk, pronghorn, sheep, goats, bear, and moose. Altitude Adjustment Loveland is situated at 4,982 feet above sea level in a semiarid climate. The sun is more intense, and you should always wear sunscreen of at least 15 SPF, sunglasses, and drink lots of water. There is less oxygen at higher altitudes, so give yourself time to adjust, plan a day of rest before strenuous exercise like downhill or cross-country skiing; pace yourself while hiking or biking. To decrease the risk of acute mountain sickness at altitudes above 7,400 feet, take it easy, eat high carbohydrate foods and limit salt and alcohol intake. 51 51 Parks Want a leisurely day with the family?
