DEAR CHAMBER MEMBERS
The proof of this newsletter had already come back from our newsletter printer, Allegra
Print & Imaging, when I learned of an exciting development affecting State Issue 4 – the
Governor has decided to pull the issue from the ballot, sparing Ohio’s businesses from
being trapped into a costly mandate by a well-intentioned electorate.
State Issue 4
State issue 4 would have injected unwanted and unnecessary government mandates
into the employer-employee relationship and would have been a fatal, job-killing recipe
for Ohio small businesses. State Issue 4 would have required businesses in Ohio with
25 employees or more to provide seven days of paid sick leave to each worker, to be
taken in increments of an hour or less, with no advance notice necessary. State Issue 4
would have even prohibited affected employers from changing their existing policies
to accommodate these extra seven days off. It had been deemed a “job killer,” placed
on the ballot by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). If the Governor
hadn’t pulled this issue from the ballot, and the good people of Ohio voted it into law
not realizing its crippling effect, Ohio would have been the ONLY state with mandated
paid sick leave.
The support of more than 50 chambers of commerce across the state, including the
Loveland Area Chamber of Commerce, joined a coalition to oppose this issue, urging
the Governor to pull the issue from the ballot. The Ohio Chamber of Commerce and
Ohioans to Protect Jobs and Fair Benefits (PAC opposing the issue) aggressively pursued the support of a broad coalition of businesses and business organizations to oppose
this issue.
“Nobody is against sick leave,” said John C. Mahaney, Jr., treasurer of Ohioans to Protect
Jobs and Fair Benefits, a coalition of businesses, trade associations and employers
concerned about the actual impact of the proposed mandate. “But Ohio’s struggling
economy – and especially the thousands of small businesses that are the backbone of
our economy – can’t withstand provisions in this proposal that threaten pay, benefits
and jobs.”
While polls show most Ohioans like the idea of sick leave – in fact most Ohioans take
some form of sick leave for granted as part of their overall benefits package – experts
say this particular proposal was badly written and contained significant flaws. We are
pleased that the Governor has courageously bucked the union that placed this initiative
on the ballot and spared Ohio’s businesses this costly expedition.
Trustee Elections
Speaking of election season, it will soon be time for our annual trustees’ election. The
trustees meet for about an hour and a half on the second Tuesday of the month at 8:30
am in the Chamber Board Room. Each year, five trustees are elected or appointed to
the 11 member board: three trustees are elected to three year terms, and two are appointed for one year terms. If you’d like to serve our business community in this way
and this meeting schedule is something you can accommodate, please contact me at the
office and I will give you more information about becoming a trustee. Any member
can run for a trustee position, and the Board is very interested in strengthening itself,
as evidenced by the passage of a new 5 year strategic plan which includes this measure.
continuned on next page…
5 Year Strategic Plan
The 5 Year Strategic Plan has arisen from the results of the Fremont
Group Feasibility Study conducted earlier this year in which 31 chief executive officers, financial officers and other higher-ups of area employers
were interviewed about the future and direction of the Loveland Area
Chamber of Commerce in our community.
The interviewees unanimously supported strengthening the Board,
hence our 5 year strategy to “Invite senior executives of major employers
and area stakeholders to assume leadership positions including service
on the Board of Trustees to help chart a new direction for the Chamber.”
Most recently, Patrick Taylor, CEO of General Electric Credit Union
was appointed to the Board, filling the unexpired term of Georgia Porter.
I’d like to thank Georgia for her years of service on the Board and for her
contributions of time and effort on behalf of the entire Board and Staff of
the Chamber.
In addition to Board development, strong support for reorganizing the
Chamber into a full-time operation led the way toward the following:
“Restructure the governance programs and finances of the Chamber to
enable it to become a full-time operation capable of influencing positive
economic growth and solutions to major issues facing the City of Loveland and the surrounding area.” The Chamber has identified a number
of internal initiatives and objectives on the road toward achieving this
goal, including implementation of QuickBooks and integration with
ChamberMaster, supporting the efforts of the Membership Committee
to boost membership to 400 members, and increasing non-dues revenue
in 2009. The Frog Festival committee is well on its way to achieving that
goal for our September 27th event. If you’d like to join the Frog Festival
committee or any other committee, please let me know. Committee
involvement is one way you can help support your investment in the
Loveland Area Chamber of Commerce.

• A special thank you to Doris Osborne for helping us in the
office with all the work that goes into putting on our golf outing fundraiser. Doris worked as both a temporary employee
and a volunteer and did a great job. We also appreciate Doris
contacting our Valentine Ladies to participate in this year’s
Fourth of July Parade. Thank you, Doris!
• Congratulations to Deb Harp on the 10th anniversary of the
Deborah Harp Insurance Agency, LLC, representing the
American Family Insurance Group. Deb also serves on our
Board of Trustees as 2nd Vice President and on our executive,
finance, membership and scholarship committees.
• Many heartfelt thanks to our Valentine Ladies Winona
Franz, Margaret Keifer, Doris Osborne and Kathryn
Undercoffer for helping us with mailing our spring quarter
newsletter. We especially enjoy visiting with you as we fold,
label and seal all those newsletters!
• Congratulations to Dr. Jeffrey Kemmet on receiving the City
of Loveland’s 2008 Business Enhancement Award! A long
time Chamber member, Dr. Kemmet, owner of the Loveland
Chiropractic Offices at 215 Loveland Maderia Road, met the
challenge of expanding his business by undertaking a diligent
property search with the help of the City of Loveland to relocate his business within the City limits.
• Thank you to Museum Director Jan Beller and President Rob
Bauer for hosting a special edition of Business Networking at
the newly renovated Greater Loveland Historical Society
Museum on Thursday, June 19th, with refreshments graciously provided by Nancy Cengal of Tastefully Simple. The
museum, located at 201 Riverside Drive in Loveland, is open
on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4 pm, or by appointment
683-5692, and is well worth a visit.

to increase their capacity to better serve their customers. Stop
by and visit them at their new location at the Fountains of
Mason, 7288 Central Parke Blvd., Mason, Ohio. Their phone

operation are Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Doug Banbury, President/CEO of AlphaGraphics, prepares
to cut the ribbon at their new and much larger facility located
in the Fountains of Mason. The new facility is also home to
Quest Marketing Solutions, which provides full-marketing
for small to medium sized companies.
• Speaking of Networking, we are certainly enjoying our new
tables! Another round of applause for Creative Memories consultant Cathy Shea and Tastefully Simple consultant Nancy
Cengal for their generous donations, and to all who participate
in our on-going “Tickets for Tables” campaign to help purchase
the tables. Networking meetings are held at our offices in The
Bauer House on the first Thursday (8 to 9 am) and third Thursday (12 to 1 pm) of each month.
• Congratulations to Scott Gordon and The Works restaurant
for being named Best Brick Oven Restaurant by CityBeat
magazine for the 2nd year in a row!
• Thank you to Ed Hogan at Sam’s Club for donating dessert
for our April 29th Legislative Luncheon and soft drinks for our
golf outing. Sam’s Club is a great place to do your small business shopping!
• How wonderful it was to see Peggy “The Gardener” Goodwin magically reappear with her gloves and shovels and flowers
to plant in the yard at The Bauer House! Peggy, a longtime
individual citizen member of the Chamber and our 2006
Valentine Lady, also handled our gardening duties last year. We
also appreciate Terry Schildmeyer of Tufts Schildmeyer Family
Funeral Home taking care of having our shrubbery trimmed
and weeds pulled. Thank you, Terry!
• Speaking of flowers, congratulations to The Loveland Greenhouse for winning the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society
Award at this year’s Cincinnati Flower Show at Coney Island!
• Just a reminder that this time of year is a particularly good
time to help the L.I.F.E. Food Pantry (Loveland Inter Faith
Effort) as donations are especially low during the summer and
back-to-school months. For more information, contact President Donna Bednar at 583-8222 or [email protected].

Sydney.
• Chamber members are eligible to receive a 10% member
discount on publishing rates provided by Gary McCauley of
Town Planner Community Calendar. Town Planner offers
affordable solutions for increasing brand awareness and name
recognition that are costly in traditional marketing and advertising firms. Gary is now reserving space in the 2009 Loveland
Town Planner Community Calendar, mailed free to nearly
17,000 households in December. You can reach Gary by calling
513-519-5451, or by email to [email protected].
• The Loveland Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to see
the remodeling project in progress at Loveland Kroger since
July. Built in 1987, the remodeling includes a pharmacy and
deli expansion, an additional restroom in the front of the store,
larger u-scan carousels, extra lighting, a new entrance, new
refrigeration, new décor, new check out counters, a new ceiling,
and, for the first time ever in a pre-existing store, new stained
concrete flooring. Carol Kilgore, store manager, requests your
patience as the location of store items changes frequently to
accommodate the transition.
• The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) approved another reduction in the maximum discount employers
can receive for keeping their workplaces safe. This reduction,
from 85% to 77%, is the second step in the BWC’s plan to
change the workers’ compensation system. The Ohio Chamber
of Commerce is working with a coalition to find alternative
reforms that promote safe workplaces and result in a win-winwin outcome for the BWC, Ohio employers and their workers.
• A special thank-you to outgoing trustee, Georgia Porter,
of Schiff Kreidler Shell, who fashioned new aprons for the
Chamber’s annual pancake breakfast. White aprons provided by Tammy Ashby of Fifth Third Bank for the pancake
breakfast’s debut two years ago, did not withstand last year’s
onslaught of pancakes and sausage stains from serving more
than 500 people last year. Georgia cleaned the old ones as well
as could be, and took it upon herself to make a bunch of new,
black aprons, she is hoping won’t stain as easily.
• Thank you to Loveland’s Amazing Race Committee for contributing $4,000 in proceeds from Loveland’s Amazing Race to
the Loveland Area Chamber of Commerce.
Loveland City School District teachers Laverne Armstrong and
Lori Ketchum took a field trip to the Loveland Area Chamber of
Commerce to learn about chambers of commerce and the way the
Loveland Chamber supports businesses and the Loveland area
as a great place to live, work and play. Their trip also included
visits to the Greater Loveland Historical Society Museum and
Loveland City Hall.
• Quest Marketing Solutions is expanding its services and
offices this month and announcing the launch of two new
service divisions in conjunction with its move to new offices
in the Fountains of Mason. Its two new divisions are: Lucid, a
brankd design and management team which provides graphic
and web design services, and Matalas, a logo gear division that
provides company apparel, gifts and other items that carry the
company’s logo.
• Congratulations to John Stewart, CFO of Deerfield Construction Company one of twenty three chief financial officers
of Greater Cincinnati organizations who were named finalists in
the Business Courier’s CFO of the Year awards program.
• Bob Roncker, owner of Bob Roncker’s Running Spot in
O’Bryonville and Glendale has purchased the Runner’s Depot
of Loveland, at 127 W. Loveland Avenue, which has been in
business for four years. Be sure to visit the new store and urge
their continued membership in the Loveland Area Chamber of
Commerce. For more information about the store, visit www.
runningspot.com or call 831-2378.
• The Bureau of Workers’ Compensation’s (BWC) decision
to lower the discount rate attracts more attention than their
intention to lower base rates. Of the 260,000 employers doing
business in Ohio, 93,000 participate in the BWC’s group rating
program for Workers’ Compensation premiums. Approximately
20,000 employers receiving the highest discount will pay more
in premiums, while the remaining 73,000 will receive little or
no increase, and may actually receive a decrease. The remaining
167,000 non-group participating employers will have lower premium rates. For more information, please contact Pat Williams
at Hunter Consulting Company, 231-4023 x 106 or Colleen
Culp of Compensation Consultants Inc., at 800-837-3200.
• New Member Huntington Bank has joined with Loveland
Interfaith Effort (L.I.F.E.) Food Pantry as their community
partner in celebration of the opening of their new branch on
Loveland-Miamiville Road in Miami Township. Donation bins
to collect canned goods, dried goods and paper products will be
setup between August 18th and September 30th.
•The City of Loveland Police Department has announced
its Senior Citizen Community Watch Program. The program
is designed to provide a link between our senior residents and
the Police Division. Our goal is to enhance the communication
and interaction between the senior community and Loveland
Police. Seniors who wish to be contacted by a police officer on
a regular or semi-regular basis are encouraged to contact the
Police Division. Through this contact and interaction, we will
try to ensure that seniors are receiving needed assistance and try
to link seniors with any special services they may require. For
more information about this program, please contact either of
the two coordinating police officers, Steve Moster or Ed Ramsey
at 513-583-3000.
• A very special thank you to Doris Kramer, who has been volunteering to clean up and organize nearly 40 years of the Chamber’s historical records. Doris has been coming in a few times
a week since the summer began, and she has already accomplished quite a bit. She has located and organized decades of
minutes of the Board of Trustees and folders full of golf outing
records from the past twenty years. Doris – we appreciate your
efforts! Thank you so much!
• We are pleased to announce a new tenant in our office for lease. Susan Beckman of Visiting Angels has been renting the office
since the beginning of September. Susan learned of the office by
taking early advantage of one of the most overlooked of Chamber benefits – access to our conference room. Susan has used
it many times over the summer months to interview caregivers,
and now, she will be close by the conference room in her very
own office. Please give a warm welcome to Susan the next time
you stop in to the Chamber.
• A very special thank you to Scott Findlow of Findlow Filtration, Inc., chair of our Property Management Committee, who
went above and beyond the call of duty by arranging and paying
for the furniture in the upstairs apartment to be hauled away, as
we prepare for the “Awesome Apartment, Dude!” makeover.
