Make yourself at home
Fall in love with Rauma! One of the oldest towns
in Finland, Rauma is famous for its long lacemaking tradition and distinctive dialect. Rauma
is a town of culture, with a rich history, fascinating
museums and a diverse range of events.
Tampere
Helsinki
The town was established in 1442. It has a long
tradition as a significant centre of industry and
trade, where history meets the present, creating a
vibrant town with a unique atmosphere.
Rauma is home to two UNESCO World Heritage
Sites, Old Rauma and the Bronze Age burial site
of Sammallahdenmäki. Rauma has developed
from a small village into a lively and friendly industrial harbour town with about 40,000 residents.
In the pages of this brochure, you can read how
people living in Rauma see their home town.
“People in Rauma are warm and friendly.
The atmosphere is pleasant and relaxed. People
treat you nicely everywhere: in shops, municipal
offices and health care centres. Someone living
in Turku suspected that the friendliest people in
western Finland live in Rauma.”
The quotes were collected from Rauma´s online development forum.
They are marked with speech bubbles.

Marela Museum
Marela is a home museum of merchant and
ship-owner families.
The exterior of the main
building was renovated
in Neo Renaissance style
in the late nineteenth
century. At the time, the
house was owned by Gabriel Granlund, a leading
tradesman. Its decorative tile stoves, doors,
panel work and murals
on the ceilings reveal
the wealth of its former
residents. The interior
reflects the lifestyle of
an old ship-owner family.

Old Rauma
– the heart of the town
Old Rauma was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1991. Distinctive
Old Rauma is a unique example of an old Nordic wooden town. In Old Rauma, people live,
work and enjoy their free time in a historic environment.

The Church of the Holy
Cross in Rauma was
originally built for a
Franciscan monastery in
the late fifteenth century.
When the Church of the
Holy Trinity in Rauma
was destroyed in a fire
in 1640, the Church of
the Holy Cross became
the church of the local
Lutheran parish. The
church continues to be
one of the most popular
attractions in Rauma.

Kirsti Museum
The buildings and yard of the Kirsti Museum are representative of construction in the eighteenth and nineteenth
centuries. Over the course of history, the house has been
owned by sailors, workers and craftsmen. Before becoming a museum in the 1970s, it was owned by the same
family for 200 years. The museum exhibits the lifestyles
of house owners and tenant families in the twentieth century. Summer attraction.

Old Town Hall
Located in the centre of the city, the Market Square is surrounded by more than 100 shops
and boutiques as well as ateliers and atmospheric cafés and restaurants.
Distances are short in Old Rauma: shops, sights and attractions are located within walking
distance. Narrow and meandering streets and lanes are characteristic of Old Rauma, following medieval routes. The district is also known for its impressive gates, wooden fences
and asymmetric plots.
4
Located by the marketplace, the Old Town Hall was completed in 1776. Today, it serves as a museum. Its collections are related to the history of the town, including
lacemaking. The Old Town Hall also houses changing
exhibitions. It is a baroque-style building, but its basic
shape – a two-storey town hall with a clock tower – was
already common in medieval towns.

Sammallahdenmäki
remains a mystery
Sammallahdenmäki is a Bronze Age burial site that was included in the list of UNESCO
World Heritage Sites in 1999. It was the first archaeological site in Finland to make the list.
This unique area reflects the religious beliefs and burial practices of a community in Western Finland in the Scandinavian Bronze Age and early Iron Age (1500–50 BCE). Spanning
about a kilometre, the area features 36 burial cairns of different shapes and sizes.
The site is located in Kivikylä in Lappi, about 20 kilometres from the centre of Rauma. You
can visit the site on your own (signage from Highway 8 and Highway 12). The area has parking and signposts, and brochures are available.

A town of
lacemakers
Lacemaking is an old tradition in Rauma. The tradition dates back to the 1750s, if not further, and it experienced its golden age in the early 19th century, when silk bonnets with lace
trimmings became fashionable.
Lacemakers earned a considerable income, and the governor decided that lacemaking
was to be regarded as an industry – after all, Rauma had more lacemakers than any other
region in Finland.
The 44th Rauma Lace Week will be celebrated in 2014. In addition to workshops and
demonstrations, the programme features exhibitions, concerts and theatre performances
for the whole family.

A town of artists
The Rauma Art Museum, the Lönnström Art Museum and
professional artists as well as active art associations –
such as the Rauma Art Society, the Rauma Association
of Printmakers, the Keramos Group of Ceramic Artists,
Art Hauenguano, Inspira and the RaumArs Artist in Residence Programme – contribute to the diverse and active
art scene in Rauma.
“Rauma promotes
culture and wants
the voices of residents
to be heard.”
11
The exact origin of the
Rauma dialect is not
known, but the dialect
has been enriched by
foreign words introduced
by sailors. Speakers of
the Rauma dialect tend
to shorten words but talk
at length. Frans Hjalmar
Nording, better known
as author Hj. Nortamo,
was a popular advocate
of the Rauma dialect,
local culture and community spirit. He was
also known for his great
sense of humour, Rauma
style.

The Rauma
archipelago
is the heart of the Bothnian Sea National Park
Underwater nature and cultural heritage are particularly important for the Bothnian Sea
National Park. Boating, cruises, hiking and birdwatching are the best ways to explore the
archipelago, an area of culturally and historically significant natural beauty.
The national park area in front of Rauma has more than 30 kilometres of marked hiking
trails. The extensive and fragmented archipelago is also ideal for canoeing trips. Along the
trails, you will experience history, from stone ovens built by Russian soldiers in the eighteenth century to old farms and relics of world wars.
18
Enjoy hiking and the sea breeze
The best hiking trails in Rauma can be found on the large
islands in front of the town: Nurmes, Aikonmaa and Reksaari. The trails are marked and are suitable for hiking
on your own or with a group or a guide. The stops along
the trails have shelters, toilets, campfire sites and wood
for burning. Visitors can also book a cottage with a sauna. The buildings have been renovated in the style of old
archipelago farms. A brochure with maps of hiking trails
near the sea is available.
Bothnian Coast Road
The newest national tourist route in Finland runs along
the shores of the Bothnian Sea National Park, offering an
opportunity to explore valuable cultural heritage. For centuries, it served as an important postal road. Brown signs

Villages full of life
The idyllic landscapes
of Lake Köyliö
are nationally and
culturally significant.
Vibrant villages
Köyliö is known for its lively villages and active associations. Fairs, concerts and sports events draw large
numbers of people, also from other villages and towns.
In 2014, the Tuiskula summer theatre celebrates its 40th
anniversary. The tourist information point and café at Villa
Linturi are open in the summer and also hold art exhibitions. Photo: Simo Nummi
Kepola
Kankaanpää
Designed by Profes sor Aimo Tukiainen, the
statue of Lalli in Kepola, the centre of Köyliö,
was unveiled in August
1989. The wooden Köyliö
Church, completed in
1752, is located on Kirkkosaari, Church Island,
by a road that leads from
Kepola across the lake.
The stairs that the priest
used when arriving to
Church Island are still
located by the lake.
Kankaanpää is the home
of Kuninkaanlähde
(King’s Spring), a spring
of 1.5 hectares. It was
named after Gustav III,
who visited the spring
in Midsummer 1775.
Ystävykset (Friends) is
a sculpture with a bust
of a man and his horse.
Located in the yard of
the municipal administration building, the work
reminds people of the
artist, Emil Cedercreutz,
and his love of the Satakunta region.

Catholic pilgrimage site

Museums and attractions
– idyllic national heritage landscapes
The written history of Köyliö and Finland begins with peasant Lalli, his wife Kerttu and
Bishop Henry. Lalli killed Bishop Henry near Kirkkokari on the ice of Lake Köyliö in January
1156. This is the first event in the history in Finland for which the time, place and people are
known with some certainty.
