Satilla REMC Foundation’s Generous Donations to Benefit
Coastal Pines and Wiregrass Technical Students and Programs
T
he Satilla Rural Electric
Membership Corporation
(REMC) Foundation recently
made three $5,000 donations
to benefit area communities
and residents of Southeast
Georgia. The significant and
generous donations will be
used to support student and
program success at Wiregrass
Technical College (WTC) in
Fitzgerald and Coastal Pines
Technical College (CPTC)
through scholarships, program equipment, capital
projects and other worthy
investments that promote a
highly skilled workforce.
From left, Jim Tucker, Chairman, Satilla REMC Foundation, presents a check to Tina K. Anderson,
Funding for the award President of Wiregrass Technical College
was made possible through
voluntary contributions of Satilla REMC Members who
round up their monthly electric bills.
Coastal Pines Technical College, which began
offering classes in July 2014, was established from the
consolidation of Altamaha Technical College (est.
1989) and Okefenokee Technical College (est. 1965).
For many years before the merger, the Satilla REMC
Foundation championed the mission of the former
colleges and provided financial support.
Five thousand dollars was donated to the
Altamaha Technical College (ATC) Foundation, and
another $5,000 given to the Okefenokee Technical
College Foundation when CPTC President Glenn
Deibert visited the Satilla REMC main office in Alma.
At the Fitzgerald presentation, Romeo Reyes,
Satilla REMC President/CEO, and Jim Tucker,
Chairman of the Satilla REMC Foundation, presented
WTC President Tina K. Anderson a $5,000 check for
students in the Coffee County area.
“Your annual contribution is a blessing,” Deibert
told Satilla officials. “Knowing the source of the funds
makes us even more grateful and accountable. At a
time when people are pinching pennies to pay bills
or maintain their lifestyle, how humbling is it to know
that so many choose to give each month to education. It speaks to how much they value higher education, understand its benefits and care about their

Change Your Clocks; Change Your Batteries
T
he second Sunday in
March will trigger daylight
saving time, when we “spring
ahead” and set our clocks one
hour later.
That’s also the best day to
change the batteries in smoke
alarms and carbon monoxide
detectors—even if the batteries
aren’t dead.
If you don’t have fire
alarms and CO detectors, your
family is at risk. The alarms will loudly warn you if smoke or
gas is present in your home, so you can get out.
Carbon monoxide is a clear, odorless gas that is deadly
but hard to detect. If you don’t have an alarm, it’s unlikely you
will know if your home has a CO leak.
Carbon monoxide doesn’t come just from cars. Your gas
furnace or stove is a potential source of the
gas. The U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) offers these tips for poison prevention:
• Keep gas appliances properly adjusted.
• Use electric space heaters, not gas space
heaters.
• Install an exhaust fan, vented to the outdoors, over a gas stove.
• Open flues when wood-burning fireplaces
are in use.
• Choose properly sized wood stoves with
tight-fitting doors that are certified to meet EPA emission
standards.
• Have a trained professional inspect, clean and tune up your
central heating system—including furnaces, flues and chimneys—annually. Repair leaks promptly.
• Do not idle your car inside the garage.

Cold Weather Drives Up Power Use
F
all and winter started off unusually mild here in South Georgia, but we have
seen a normal amount of cold weather here since January 1. The graphs
below show cold weather data for Satilla’s service area (hours below 45 degrees
Fahrenheit), taken from georgiaweather.net. The first graph includes the mild
temperatures experienced here in the latter part of 2015.
Because of the very mild 2015 temps, we will likely have the warmest overall winter experienced here in recent years. However, if you look at the second
graph, your will see that since January 1, winter conditions (hours below 45
degrees Fahreinheit) have been back to normal.
Members can get a custom graph of their usage by completing a 10-minute
survey on our website, www.satillaemc.com/homeenergypage.html.
