The Berkley Buzz
“Creating Community Through People, Parks and Programs”
Spring has sprung! By the time that you are reading this, spring will officially be here. As I write this letter, spring certainly feels like it has
arrived in Berkley. For us here at Parks & Recreation that means that people are in our parks, walking around the city, playing tennis at one of
our 10 courts, biking along the city’s bike route, inquiring about spring and summer camps and much more!
It seems that each spring we are offered a new beginning. We wake from the slumber of a long Michigan winter and rush to get outside and
greet the warmer weather just as we greet our neighbors over the fence lines. We walk to a neighborhood park and we make plans for all that
we will do during the warmer months our great state offers. Spring is a time of new beginnings and this year at Parks & Recreation, we thought
it would be a good time to begin a wonderful collaboration with our top-notch Public Library.
Beginning in mid-April and running through mid-May the Friends of the Berkley Library and Friends of Berkley Parks & Recreation are teaming up to sponsor Tale on the Trail in Jaycee Park. This new interactive event will have a kickoff on April 25th at 5pm and will be available
for people to visit throughout the following month. We encourage you to participate in this wonderful new activity. More details regarding this
event can be found on page 4. Many thanks to our respective Friends groups for sponsoring this and for having such pride in their Library and
our Parks!
In addition to Tale on the Trail, the Library and Parks & Recreation departments will also be working together to bring you story time with an
activity in three of our parks this summer. You will find dates and times in this addition of the Buzz. Please note that the parks selected coincide
with Summerfest dates that occur a week after the story time. This is a wonderful way to get your child’s brain and body flowing and we hope
to see you there!
Did somebody say Summerfest?! Back for a 6th year, our annual Summerfest series of events will look a lot like they have in past years, but we
will be changing our Community Picnic this year. We hope you will join us for a fun family Lua and dance on July 7th and we hope to see you
at all of our Summerfest events this year. A full schedule of events for 2016 is located on the back cover of this issue.
We hope everyone had an active and fun winter. Our recreation programs were full all winter long and our 6th annual Winterfest proved to be
a major success even without the snow! A heartfelt thank you goes out to all our sponsors, participating local restaurants for our Soup-off, our
energetic and caring volunteers and all those that came to enjoy the day with us. The day would not happen without our sponsors and volunteers
and it would be no fun without all your smiles and laughter. Thank you.
WinterFest Sponsors include: Berkley Dad’s Club, Berkley Mom’s Club, Friends of Parks and Recreation, Berkley Steelers, BerkleyHuntington Woods Youth Assistance, Harfield Lanes, Berkley Lions Club, Royal Popcorn Supply, Detroit Deluxe, Boy Scout Troop 1085
Soup Competition participants include: Coco Fairfield’s, The Lunch Cafe, The Recipe Kit Warehouse
We have a full slate of programs for all ages in the coming months and we hope you find something that peaks your interest in the following
pages. Check out our great summer day camp and our specialty camps for fun summer activities for your child.
As always, we encourage you to come to us if you have any questions or suggestions regarding one of our parks or programs. We love to hear
from you.
On behalf of Parks & Recreation staff, thank you for taking the time to read about the great work the department is doing and we hope to see
you out and about this summer.

Safe On Campus
Self Defense for Children
Ages 6 - 11
Statistically women are in the greatest danger twice in
their life, when they are going to college and when they
are senior citizens. But the most common crimes against
women are easy to avoid if you know how to recognize the
warning signs and you know what to do. Learn real world
self-defense for every day people from an instructor who has
been teaching self-defense in colleges since 2003.
Instructor: Live Safe Academy
If someone wants to hurt our children,
they won’t choose a time or a place with
witnesses. That means no parents, no teachers,
no policemen, just our children and the
predator. The safety of our children will
depend on their ability to recognize a
threat and respond effectively. These fun,
interactive and age appropriate workshops teach essential,
lifesaving information about the threats facing our children,
strategies for prevention and real world techniques designed
to reduce their risk of abductions, assaults and other forms of
violence. Most of all, these programs teach students that they
have the right to be safe and no one has the right to hurt them
and that their life is worth protecting.
