Spiritual Stories
and Wine
For any woman in pursuit of inspiration and encouragement, this
year’s Marco Faith and Wine series featuring two spiritually
acclaimed speakers at the San Marco Parish Center was just the
ticket. In February, Allen Hunt, Ph.D. brought to light the theme of
his best selling book, “Everybody Needs To Forgive Somebody: How
Forgiveness Can Unleash Unexpected Power In Our Lives,” followed
in March by Christina King, mother of eight, radio talk show host
and author of “Treasure In Earthen Vessels: How God Can Shine
Through Our Cracks and Weaknesses.” Although vastly different in
backgrounds Hunt’s as a Wall Street consultant to a crusader for
Christ, while King’s began within the shadows of childhood sexual
abuse and emerged edified through the light of Christ’s love — both
speakers shared their personal stories of redemption in entertaining
and engaging style followed by Q & A and book signings. .

An Irish Night
What would March on Marco be without Kathleen Reynolds to
remind us of our Irish roots? “Without the Mackle Brothers there
would be no Marco Island,” she said to the crowd at this year’s
Shamrock Dinner Dance. It was indeed a green carpet affair at the San
Marco Parish Center. Kretch’s Restaurant catered the delectable cuisine
of corn beef & cabbage and the music by Mary Jo and Mike “Moose”
O’Regan transported everyone from County Collier to County Kerry
with sing-a-longs and dancing. Reynolds, dubbed Marco’s Queen of
Ireland, could not have been more pleased with the sold-out celebration
with proceeds split between the Sons & Daughters of Erin and the
San Marco Catholic Church.

A Walk for Life
Marco Islanders put another Relay for Life into the record books in April, after 29 teams
took to the track that raised the relay’s goal of $235,000. The money is all earmarked to
help the fight against cancer and support those struggling with the disease. The Knights of
Columbus honor guard led the Survivors’ Lap, along with other cancer survivors wearing
purple T-shirts. The overnight endeavor also included entertainment by Kirk McFee,
Greenview Band, No Exceptions and magic by Chris Pritchard as well as sack races, a
scavenger hunt and charades.

Time for Lunch
Members of Just Friends enjoyed a cooking demonstration at CJ’s
on the Bay with Chef Laura Owen in April. They were given a
tour of the kitchen as Owen explained the various posts of food
preparation. The lunch demo included a main dish, salad, dessert
and wine. Owen gave cooking hints and shared some favorite cook
book titles with the group.

Shredded for a Cause
Shred Parties have become common parlance on Marco Island, though
it’s doubtful other parts of the world would have the foggiest notion of its
meaning. Actually, they began almost five years ago as the brainchild
of Keith Dameron, VP/Manager, IberiaBank Marco, in response to a
trend he observed. Folks needed massive amounts of documents shredded
and resources were both limited and costly. So on June 6, 2009, with
great fanfare and community involvement, the first Shred Party was
inaugurated — and the demand for “yet another” has never ceased! This year’s spring shred party was a major blockbuster, breaking
all previous records. Dameron rattles off the numbers like baseball stats:
740 boxes and bags, 196 vehicles and $2260 collected for the Marco
Police Foundation Scholarship Fund. “To date, all 14 shred parties have
produced 68.6 tons of shred,” Dameron said. “Now that’s a lot of shred!”.

Funds for YMCA
The Greater Marco Family YMCA hosted three separate fundraisers in late April and early
May. Two are longtime Island favorites, and one is a new addition to the plethora of
activities held during season on Marco. The Taste of Marco, held in May, returned for its
24th year, with a steading stream of visitors who packed the Esplanade courtyard buying
samplings from Island restaurants. Miss Dottie’s Duck Derby was held in late April at the
Y’s Dottie Weiner Aquatic Center. Spectators were treated to a number of heat races that
produced winners in three different categories Celebrity “Rock ‘N Roll” Duck Race,
Corporate “Concert Fan” Duck Race and Numbered Ducks Race. And the final event,
Healthy Kids Day, was held in April as a way to educate kids on how to have a healthy
lifestyle. Healthy Kids Day is a nationwide YMCA initiative to improve the health and
well-being of kids.

Spring Jubilee
Thousands of young children turned out in April for
the annual Spring Jubilee where 20,000 eggs were
scattered across the pancake-flat, clipped grassy soccer
field. The eager, not to say rapacious, children waited
for the horn to sound releasing them to scoop up as
many eggs as possible until the field was picked clean.
The children also enjoyed other activities under the
airnasium, where they played games, enjoyed a bounce
house and train rides around the lake.

Hallelujah! He has Risen
Thousands of people greeted the Easter Sunday sunrise at the beach behind the
Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort, in a tradition that has now gone on for 26
years. This year, a fresh breeze blew in off the Gulf of Mexico, kicking up a surf and
blowing the white fabric shroud off of the “old rugged cross” that stood behind the
stage. The crowd heard from three pastors, beginning with Kirk Dreiser of the Wesley
United Methodist Church, then the Rev. Dr. Steve Schoof of Marco Presbyterian
Church, and ending with Thomas McCulley of New Life Community Church.

Mad Hatter
Tea
The Mother/Daughter Mad Hatter Tea Party
returned to Mackle Park in May, one day
before Mother’s Day, giving moms the chance
to have a girls’ day out with their precious
female offspring. Almost two dozen girls,
moms and grandmoms came to the park, for
games, arts and crafts, and the grand finale of
morning tea, complete with some mouthwatering baked treats. The ladies, dressed in
their elegant party clothes, enjoyed tea served
from an impressive array of teapots.

Hats and Horses
Marco Island wasn’t without its display of outlandish hats for the
annual Kentucky Derby in May. It was the Marco Island Brewery
that hosted the traditional fundraiser benefitting Upon a Star, a local
Island charity. Hostess and charity co-founder Michelle Jordan
naturally had one of the most over-the-top toppers, in red, white and
black. And other ladies donning their extravagant attire were in
attendance too.
