Welcome to Unioto High School, home of the “Sherman Tanks”. We believe the “Sherman Tanks” is one of the most unique high school mascots in the United States, as it is named after General William T. Sherman and the WW I Army training camp which previously occupied our campus, known as Camp Sherman. The tank, resembling the “Sherman Tank”, serves as a symbol of our strength and resiliency in athletics, academics and the arts. Our students commonly refer to us as simply, the “U”! Unioto High School is proud to boast a consistent “Excellent Rating” on the Ohio Department of Education report card and is considered to be one of the finest public high schools in the southern Ohio region. The core of our mission is to produce students that are College and Career Ready using the modern day three R’s, Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships. Our staff is made up of our experienced and well trained professionals that pride themselves in lifelong learning through constant professional development. As a Race to the Top district, we intertwine progressive researched based initiatives with the Ohio Improvement Process focusing on reading and math. Unioto High School is committed to Advanced Placement courses as well as Career Based and Intervention courses that meet the needs of students with varying abilities and post secondary education goals. We partner with the award winning Pickaway Ross Career and Technology Center, which is conveniently located to our north east across the Scioto River as well as Ohio University Chillicothe. We at Unioto High School work to maintain a clean, safe and orderly environment where our students can learn and our teachers can teach at their optimum. Extra-curricular activities are plentiful not only in athletics but the arts and in service clubs and organizations. There is truly something for everyone at Unioto and we encourage each student to take advantage of being a part of a performing group, club or team. That experience, coupled with a targeted sequential curriculum provides students with the tools necessary for success once they cross our stage as graduates and become Alumni. Please peruse our web site for more information and come experience Unioto in person. We love and welcome visitors. James A. I graduated from a surrounding school district forty (40) years ago and I can still remember what our school said about Unioto. Not everything was positive, but the one common feeling was Unioto was strong in academics and athletics. After having the pleasure to be employed here for 28 years, I can attest that Unioto strives to provide a rigorous curriculum for all students and we have been lucky to have had tremendous athletes that go hand in hand with strong leadership. The old saying goes; “you will get out of it what you put into it” is a true statement pertaining to everyone. That saying stands for Unioto, if you want to succeed; this is the place to make it happen. Hard work with a series of goals and a vision of what you want your future to be all rest with the individual. If I know nothing else, I know the success of a student and their academic endeavors relies heavily upon the involvement of the parents. Structure and guidance serves as a beacon as a child matures into adulthood. This pattern sets into motion a positive effect for generations to come. If this is not happening within your family today, maybe it is a good time start. During the 1999-2000 school years, the enrollment at Unioto was 1,876 students. Today, the School District enrolls over 2,284 students and has been ranked continuous improvement and or effective on the District Report Card during this time frame. The District has gone through a $32,000,000 building project and purchased 19 acres of land to allow for additional expansion. The athletic complex has been upgraded with new home and away bleachers, a new concession stand, and new restroom facilities. The Union-Scioto Local School District has completed a House Bill 264 project which has helped the District conserve energy through heat recovery from the chillers. We have been awarded the Energy Star for conserving energy and identified by the Ohio Smart Schools as a District that has maintenance and operation programs that function at an efficient and effective manner. Unioto is the only school in Ross County that is participating in the Race to the Top initiative, which is helping our educators to provide quality instruction to increase student achievement. We are currently on the ground level of a building project which will add another wing to the Junior High. The wing will house the sixth grade classes, making the building a true middle school. The project should be completed mid August 2013. This will open up a now overcrowded elementary building. Unioto is on the move. A school district of hardworking, dedicated people concerned about the future of the students that attend here. A district that is proud of its past and excited about its future.
