HOPEWELL MOOSE NEWS 2014-2015 Premier Lodge Award April 2016 Hopewell Moose Family Center Newsletter New Facebook Page Due to circumstances beyond our control the Communication Committee Chairman, Art Steward and the Board of Officers, created a “Community Page”. We apologize for the confusion but this was necessary to regain control of our Facebook Page. If you see the profile picture below, you are at the correct site. https://www.facebook.com/HopewellMooseFamilyCenter1472/ “He has a right to criticize, who has a heart to help.” ― Abraham Lincoln “You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.” ~Winston Churchill In This Issue We were happy to host the Old Dominion Moose Legion 148 Ritual Team, for their practice, tonight. It was also a great night, as 3 new legionnaires, were conferred. Welcome brothers! (Ed Jones, Mathew Kilbourn, Francis Pattin) Office Notes Advance ticket sales end at 5pm the day before all events. After that tickets must be purchased at the door. Only members are permitted to purchase tickets. All qualified guests must be signed in by a member. Gary, Lodge Administrator Moose Legion Adopts Mooseheart Child LOOM & WOTM Elections Car & Bike Show Volunteer Participation VMA Fourth Annual Golf Tournament WOTM Spring Yard Sale Moose International Conference Message from our Territory Managers on District Elections Brothers, You are receiving this correspondence as I have received many inquiries expressing concern as to the District Presidents holding a second term in office. During the exit Breakfast at the VMA Mid-Year in Norfolk, TM Rodger Huffman expressed that District Presidents were encouraged to run for a second term. This “suggestion” is (of course) not mandatory, as it would take a change in the by-laws. I concur only if the President is doing a good job and ESPECIALLY if there is no one else to run. This is not meant to discourage anyone from placing their name on the ballot; competition is healthy. Hopefully this will clarify any misunderstanding. Fraternally, Mike Rios Territory Manager Eastern Virginia Phone 757.650.6445 E-mail - [email protected] Governor’s Message I have been truly blessed to serve you for the past two years. There are countless people to thank for my time in the “HOT” seat. I have seen the true value of a strong lodge and what you can accomplish if given the tools and resources. The WOTM contributed to the success of the LOOM over the past year. We partnered together for the Rocker & Cradle fundraiser to increase our giving power to the Endowment Fund, worked together at our summer picnics, collected items for the needy, all as a TEAM. My time has been rewarded by how close the Moose Legion, WOTM and LOOM worked on dozens of events. If you look back, it would be hard to distinguish which ones were WOTM, LOOM or Moose Legion’s. We truly have come together and grown as a Lodge. Please support you new Board of Officers, Women & Men, as we continue to prosper and lead the way in the VMA. I look forward to seeing more of you step up an serve on various committees and attend lodge meetings. God Bless Mooseheart & Moosehaven. “Myrtle Casey Senior Luncheon” Senior Lunch has really taken off this year. The menu is the best deal in town. There were 70 Attendees last month. Hazel Krelik won the door prize. Our next luncheon will be held on April 21th—same place, same time. Hope to see you then! Message the Moose International Membership Department Brothers ALL, Each of you can surely see the huge numbers that your Lodge or your Territory has to overcome by looking at the column on the right hand side of the (above attached AED) report by Membership Chairman Calvin Greene. This huge number (-3088 unpaid just for March) will certainly cripple our membership goal of 34,335 by 4/30/16. At present time the Association stands at 34,658. With everyone teaming together, making contacts with unpaid members, Virginia can overcome this deficit. Please use teamwork, commitment and fraternalism an reach out to your members in arrears for January, February and MARCH. Supreme Governor Terry Walls will be coming to northern Virginia April 15th and 16th and telethons need be conducted during his visits at those Lodges as well as others. Together, we can overcome the huge number above and move our Association inside the top 5 at St. Louis. Thank each of you with this gallant membership effort in making Virginia one of our premier Associations. God Bless and thank each of you again for your devotion and fraternalism, it’s making a difference. Administrator’s Message Fraternally, My first year as Administrator of the Hopewell Moose Lodge has come to an end. It has indeed been an interesting and rewarding year for me. Rodger Huffman Continue to support your new “Board of Officers” and you will see better things happen at the Hopewell Lodge. I can’t thank each individual personally for the help I’ve received this past year; therefore, I’ll just say “thanks” to each and everyone who had a part in making Hopewell Lodge the best in the state of Virginia! Moose International Membership Department Mid-East Region Territorial Manager Liaison Western Virginia 540-294-5932 [email protected] Again, thanks for letting me serve you as Administrator. The Election of Officers for the 2016-17 Moose Year will be the first Thursday of April. Come on out and VOTE!!! Gary Bartholomew 2 The Women of the Moose, Hopewell, Virginia - Chapter 1180, Would cordially like to invite you to attend our “Installation Ceremony” on Wednesday, April 27th, 2016 at 7 p.m. Please show your support and encouragement for your Chapters incoming Board of Officers, Committee Chairmen and Appointed Officers for the 2016/2017 term. Unified in oath and commitment, these co-workers will dedicate countless hours in service, not only our lodge, but also for Mooseheart & Moosehaven. Please join us as we wish them a very successful year. Refreshments will be served immediately following the ceremony, which will be held in the ballroom. ~ D.M. Ozmore~ Senior Regents Message Spring has arrived, and with it comes new beginnings. April brings forth a new year for both our lodge and chapter. This month, the Women of the Moose will have our Installation Ceremony complete with a brand new Board of Officers, Appointed Chairmen, & Committee Chairmen to guide us through the next year. It is with mixed emotion that I find myself writing one of the last articles ever, as your Senior Regent. It’s true what they say…..”By the time you feel familiar and comfortable with the position….your time is over.” My year was wonderful, and for that I owe a big thank you to all the Collegians, who served before me and took me under their wing. To all my fellow co-workers who supported and encouraged me, (even though I’m sure I caused a few headaches along with some laughter). To the Men’s Board of Officers, thank you not only for your support of Women and Chapter, but for your patience with me. For all my requests, for all my questions, and for all the times I asked, “Why”? Lastly, thank you to all of our lodge members for your support of our Chapter. Your participation and donations with ALL of our functions (and we hit you guys up with a lot!), made this past year, a very successful year. From Ice cream socials, taco & spaghetti dinners, 50/50’s, bake sales, cooler and rocking chair raffles, Fall Bazaar & craft Sales, Paint Nites, nursing home contributions, Father’s Day Breakfast, Children’s parties, holiday dances...right up to our upcoming yard sale. Your support has been tremendous, and we are lucky to have such member support. We can only be as successful as our members contributions allow. I never would have thought when I attended my very first Chapter meeting a couple of years ago, that I would ever be a Senior Regent. I can still recall looking around in both confusion & awe, when I heard the song, “Mooseheart The Happiest”, (and to be honest, I wasn’t even sure if I was going to come back to another meeting), but I did. I kept coming back because it was bigger than me, it was a challenge, & it served a higher purpose. In Faith, Hope & Charity, ~D.M. Ozmore~ 3 Moose Legion Chairman As promised the Moose Legion has hit the ground running this year. We have sponsored a monthly breakfast, held a paint night social, participated in the ODML 148 Winter Celebration, held a silent auction, partnered with the WOTM for a Christmas Dance and Yeti Cooler Raffle and added 4 new legionnaires to our fraternity. Our most recent milestone, is our proudest! Your Moose Legion is the newest sponsor of a Sunshine Child from Mooseheart!! The Moose Legion will be making monthly donations, holiday and birthday contributions from our own budget, to sponsor a 15 yr old young man named, Latif. Number of meetings the Moose Legion holds each month....1 Yearly dues for membership in the Moose Legion.............$17 Making the difference in a child's life..................PRICELESS Join us today and be part of a bigger plan! Follow us on Facebook at “Hopewell MooseLegion” Brad Ozmore ODML 148 Ritual Team visited the Lodge for a Mini-Conferral “Volunteer Participation: One of the Biggest Issues Facing NonProfit Organizations Today.” All over the Country, a common theme seems to be developing. Maybe it is just a sign of today’s times; the more we plug in to connect, the more we disconnect from our family, neighbors and community. In our efforts to stay connected, we actually further distance ourselves. Perhaps it has more to do with today’s culture, and/ or increasing crime rates, or economic issues. Whatever the underlying issue is, or the systematic steps that led us to where we are today; the one thing that still remains is the need to aid and assist others through nonprofit organizations with the support of volunteers. The common thread across the Nation is not only getting volunteers, but more importantly, retaining the volunteers. Do these sound familiar? Common reasons people cite for not volunteering: 1) I don’t want to go to meetings. 6) I don’t like Jane Doe or John Doe. 2) I don’t want to commit. 7) I really don’t understand what you do. 3) It sounds like too much work. 8) No one has asked me to help 4) I just don’t have time. 9) I don’t feel qualified 5) I won’t know anybody. 10) I’m really not sure who to talk to for info We would like to develop and implement a “process” to initiate a program of volunteer participants that are profile based on their interests or expertise. From this process, we would like to enrich and expand our current “Volunteer Recognition” program to include more of a comprehensive “Volunteer Rewards and Recognition” program that we can build upon over the next few years. This new program will include: motivation stimulators, feedback, clear and concise areas needed for volunteer efforts, expectations & descriptions, training/and or support, recruitment tools, mentors, exit meeting follow-ups, reward & recognition levels. It will also include a “Volunteer Coordinator/Chairman”, and a volunteer committee. If you are interested in helping with this new initiative and developing pathways for this program, please contact: Troy K. King –Governor, Brad Ozmore –Moose Legion Chairman, or Dawn Ozmore –Sr. Regent, for more information. Stay tuned for more information! ~D.M.
