APRIL CULTURAL MEETING In April , we will feature traveling through Italy and staying in Abbeys and
Monasteries. After a full and busy day in Italy with many musei, piazze, and gelati, there is nothing more
refreshing and comforting than going back to your room for some rest to be ready for the next morning.
How about if your room is in one of the many monasteries and convents that offer accoglienza-hospitality?
Yes! Instead of staying in a hotel you can find one-of-a-kind accommodations run by nuns and monks in
any region you want to visit. Nivea Soto-Lightbourn and her husband Angel have stayed in many of these
places over the years in various regions in Italy. They will be here on Friday, April 8th, 7:30 p.m. at Mount
Carmel Parish Hall to share their experiences with us.
GRAZIE We thank Rosemary Czubj and Diane Magliolo for sharing
with the Society, in the month of March, the interesting pilgrimage
they took from Rome to southern Italy and the Sacred Journey to the
Black Madonnas.

NIGHT AT THE MOVIES The Society will resume the movie events beginning on Friday, April 22. The
opening movie will be the marvelous romantic comedy Il Postino (The Postman). The film was cheered by
critics and audiences everywhere as the record-breaking, Academy Award winning romantic comedy that
delivers heartfelt laughs!
Mario is a bumbling mailman who's madly in love with the most beautiful woman in town...and who's too
shy to tell her how he feels. But when a world-famous poet, Pablo Neruda, unexpectedly moves into town,

Il Postino was directed by Michael Radford and features Massimo Troisi, Philippe Noiret and Maria Grazia
Cucinotta.
SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE
Applications for the 2016 Dante Academic and Music Scholarships have
been distributed to local colleges and universities. Forms are also available on the Dante website,
www.dantealighieriofdenver.org . Students must submit completed applications by April 15 after which the
Scholarship Committee will select worthy recipients. The annual Scholarship Luncheon will be held on
May 1, 2016 at West Woods Golf Course, 6655 Quaker St., Arvada. Please make a note of the date and
plan to attend this wonderful event. Please see attached flyer. As always, contributions are always
welcome and can be sent to Dante treasurer Carol Marsala at 1696 Garland St., Denver, CO 80215.

ITALIAN LANGUAGE CLASSES
The Dante Alighieri Society is currently offering the 10-week spring session of Italian language classes,
which began the week of March 28. The 10-week summer session of classes will begin in late June 2016,
and the summer class schedule will be posted on the Dante website in May. The classes are taught by
experienced and talented bi-lingual teachers, and include beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes.
Each class meets for 90 minutes, once a week, at 3549 Navajo Street, Denver, in the parish offices of Our
Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Cost is $100 for members and $130 for non-members. New members are
welcome to join the Dante Alighieri Society when they register for classes. For more information,

THE FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE is gearing up for another great year and hoping to increase its
activities this year. If you have ideas or want to join this very active committee, please call Chairwoman
Susan Gurule at 303-524-9502. We welcome your input and energy.

hundreds per day. We have had several join the Dante Society and classes from viewing our page.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU Past President Jim Scalmanini with his late wife Jean.
1. What region in Italy were your ancestors from. If you do
not have Italian ancestors, what is the ethnic background of
your family. Have you ever been there and what was your
experience?
The Scalmaninis originally came from the small town of
Tesserete just north of Lugano in the Italian-Swiss Canton of
Ticino. We visited there ten years ago under the impression that
there were no Scalmanini's left in the old country. Much to our
surprise, however, we found Mauro Scalmanini and his family.
After some quick research we decided our great grandfathers
were brothers.
2. When did your ancestors arrive in America, and where did
they settle originally? Did they come right to Colorado?
The first of our family that came to America settled in San Francisco in about 1875.
My family moved to Colorado in 1971.
3. If you had to describe yourself in one word, what word would that be, and why?
Extremely lucky! I was born in a great country, at a great time, found a great wife, and we had a great
family with an over abundance of good friends and acquaintances.
4. Who was most influential to you growing up, and why?
My father. He was a living example of how a man can be moral and compassionate without being
religious.
5. Tell us a little about you, employment, family, interests and so on.
Like 99.9 percent of the rest of the male population in our culture, I have no idea what's going on. So I
have deferred to my wife the tasks like determining the meaning of life, how to fulfill that meaning, etc. So
after having two children of our own, we fostered three more and now enjoy a family of about 35.
Jeannie studied Child Development and taught kindergarten and pre-school. I studied math and statistics
and specialized in obfuscation with numbers.
6. How would you most like to be remembered?
As a no bullshit good guy. That is I try to tell it like it is and I hope to minimize the suffering I might cause
others.
7. What attracted you about joining the Dante Alighieri Society?
I wanted to learn to understand and to speak Italian.

NOTIZIE DALL'ITALIA I costi del corteggiamento a confronto con galateo e tempi moderni: chi
paga?
Un aspetto imbarazzante tipico del primo appuntamento e della
successiva, possibile o probabile frequentazione, è: chi e come si
sobbarca i costi del corteggiamento. Il retaggio culturale, che ben
solidalizza con il Galateo, non pone alcuna alternativa: i conti sono a
carico dell’uomo.
Alcune donne insorgono affermando che questa “imposizione sociale”
aveva senso nei tempi in cui le donne non lavoravano o guadagnavano
molto poco, ovvero un comportamento volto a ”fare di necessità
virtù”, imputando alla galanteria il sopperire all’indigenza di lei,
evitandole la palese umiliazione. E’ pur vero che anche le signorine provenienti da buona famiglia, pertanto
benestanti, si attenevano alle citate usanze. Per contro, altrettante donne, pur economicamente indipendenti,
rivendicano il piacere della cavalleria, sino a criticare aspramente l’uomo che negozia, ovvero che propone
“chi paga cosa”.
Personalmente, pur economicamente indipendente, propendo per la tradizione, ma reputo che al “chi paga
cosa”, si debba aggiungere un “come” oltre al non considerare “lui” alla stregua di un bancomat inesauribile.
Non tutti gli uomini dispongono di capitali infiniti ed il tatto di “lei” credo possa e debba sopperire all’eventuali
ristrettezze di “lui”. E’ pur vero che molti uomini si sentono umiliati nel consentire alla donna di pagare il
conto dell’albergo o ristorante che sia. Per questo conferisco assoluto potere al “come”.
Il “come”, dettato dalla sensibilità individuale, dovrebbe divenire uno stile di frequentazione complice e,
soprattutto, minimizzante verso tutto quello che non è possibile avere, in favore di una disinibita e reciproca
esternazione dell’essere.
Se è incontestabile che il classico schema culturale associa un lui facoltoso e potente ad una lei bella ed
affascinante, è pur altrettanto ovvio adeguarsi all’evidenza dell’eterogenia.
In funzione della consapevolezza che lo standard del tenore di vita possibile non è esclusivamente
elevato, nei casi in cui tra due persone vi sia un constatabile dislivello socioeconomico, ritengo
indispensabile verificare obiettivamente, scevri da buonismo da parte del più abbiente e da eccessivo orgoglio
dal canto del più disagiato, se questo fattore è superabile o bloccante.
So bene che qualcuno potrebbe asserire che se ci si ama queste cose non contano. Tuttavia, se il mio lato
romantico è assolutamente condiscendente, quello razionale mi esorta a contrastanti riflessioni. Penso,
ad esempio, al disagio di un lui “socialmente importante”, contestualizzandolo in un ristorante raffinato,
accompagnato da una donna carina, ma inelegante nel vestire e naif nel modo di porsi.
Richard Gere in Pretty Woman, è un esempio eclatante, ma non dimentichiamoci che inizialmente lei, Giulia
Roberts, era una professionista, pagata per accondiscendere ai desideri di lui. Certamente, per quanto riguarda
il look, la signorilità di lui può sopperire porgendole uno splendido pacco dono contenente un vestito completo di
accessori, esclamando ammirato “tesoro sei stupenda e non vedo l’ora che tu possa indossare questo abito che
su di te mi farebbe impazzire. Vorresti metterlo per me questa sera?” Se lei accetta di buon grado, e non per
occasionale opportunismo, è per lui possibile proseguire aiutandola nella crescita non solo estetica, ma…
qualora lei rifiutasse? “Cenerentola”, povera, ma intelligente ed orgogliosa, potrebbe non gradire la dietrologia
intrinseca nella generosità di lui e, percependosi inadeguata, non accettare la forzatura. Dubito che lui sia
disponibile alle inevitabili future mortificazioni altrui.
E quando è la donna bella, ricca e potente ad innamorarsi di un uomo modesto? Per quanto lei possa
essere animata dalle migliori intenzioni, l’orgoglio maschile, costantemente sottoposto ad imbarazzo costrittivo
di fronte al di lei disinvolto pagamento di ogni conto, non credo impiegherebbe molto nel manifestarsi,
rigettando così, la situazione, dunque lei, oltre ai cadeaux donatigli non solo per amore.

E’ evidente che il problema del “chi paga cosa” si delinea ben più ricco di sfaccettature rispetto a quanto possa
apparire, tuttavia se è vero che “al cuor non si comanda”, credo che offrirsi una possibilità sia irrinunciabile, non
fosse altro che per non avere in seguito rimpianti.
Penso che almeno per la fase iniziale della reciproca conoscenza, lei debba lasciare a lui la scelta del
ristorante e/o dell’albergo, suggerendo celatamente le sue abitudini/desideri. Se lui è attento e tiene a lei,
farà in modo di non deluderla. Escludibili imposizioni pretenziose, così come richieste misere: entrambe lo
umilierebbero. Ad esempio, lei può esternare il desiderio di consumare la colazione a letto, senza imporre il
numero delle stelle dell’albergo… E’ implicito che questo servizio non è proprio di un ambiente scadente. Idem
per quanto concerne il ristorante: preferisco la carne al pesce, ad esempio, non implica il livello del
ristorante, bensì solo la tipologia della cucina.
Nel caso si decida di trascorrere un primo fine settimana insieme, galateo e condizioni economiche di lui a
parte, ritengo sia apprezzabile agli occhi di un uomo che al ristorante, lei, in un momento non sospetto, con
la più femminile delle scuse, leggi incipriarsi il naso, si rechi alla cassa e lasci la propria carta di credito.
Al momento in cui lui chiederà il conto al cameriere, sarà l’ eloquente sorriso di lei… ad essere impagabile.
Bandite volgari negoziazioni sulla suddivisione del conto! Squallide le richieste di “fifty fifty” da parte di lui. I
tempi moderni non sono un pretesto valido per venire meno all’eleganza. Se due persone sono garbate e
non profittatrici, non hanno bisogno di ricorrere a desolanti puntualizzazioni.
PAROLE RITROVATE: Primavera.
Per i latini il ver, la stagione in cui le cose iniziano a rivivere, aveva un valore molto
importante. Tanto importante che c’era una festa, il Ver Sacrum, che si indiceva solo
imomenti di particolare difficoltà, quando la rinascita doveva essere più efficace del
insolito. Particolare importante: il Ver Sacrum si poteva svolgere solo se lo decideva il
popolo. Magari funziona anche oggi. Buon primo vere a tutti.

Italian sport: Will 2016 be a golden year for Italy?
Like every leap year, 2016 will present at least two events not to
miss for Italian sports: the Olympic Games in Rio and the European
Soccer Championships in France, two events in which our teams do
not start as favorites but may surprise many. What will be held in
Rio de Janeiro from August 5 to 21 will be the 31st Olympic Games
and, with the Soccer World Cup in 2014, the second major sporting
event to take place in Brazil in just two years.

Italian culture and history: Castel del Monte, the Citadel of Mysteries
Castel del Monte, 37 miles from Bari, is one of the 50 UNESCO World
Heritage Sites in Italy. Commissioned by Frederick II of Swabia in the
13th Century, the Castle is a massive and dominating octagonal
structure that sits on a small stretch of the Murge plateau in Apulia, 11
miles from Andria. Universally considered an example of genius
medieval architecture, Castel del Monte actually unites elements of
diverse styles and traditions from different epochs in history. Visitors can
see this in the Romanesque lines of the lions at the Castle's entrance, in
the Gothic cornice of the towers, in the Classical movement of its interior
frieze, in the defensive grandeur of the structure in general and in the
