TOGETHER, WE CAN SOLVE HUNGER
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
July 1, 2012 - June 30, 2013
Officers
No one is immune from hunger — and nowhere is that more evident than Alameda County.
Despite living in the heart of one of our nation’s wealthiest regions, 1 in 6 people in our
community struggles to put healthy meals on the table.
That’s where Alameda County Community Food Bank comes in.
Leading local anti-hunger efforts since 1985, Alameda County Community Food Bank serves
49,000 children, adults and seniors each and every week.
We believe hunger is a solvable problem, and our approach, highlighted within this report,
includes both short- and long-term solutions.
We are the hub of a vast collection and distribution network that provides food through 240
food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and other community-based organizations — as well as
our own direct-distribution programs — throughout Alameda County.
We also provide hope for a brighter tomorrow by leading community partnerships, influencing
policy, creating innovative programming and building sustainable, long-term solutions to end
hunger in Alameda County.
We recognize and operate under the assumption that anyone in our community could need
help — and everyone can help.
When one considers the large number of donors, volunteers, activists, food drive participants,
schools, religious organizations, corporations, foundations, elected officials and agencies
that are involved in our work, few — if any — organizations truly engage as much of the
community as we do.

VISION: Children,
about where their next meal is coming from.

This list reflects board membership and affiliations as of June 30, 2013.
Our clients are as diverse as our community. They come from all corners of our county and
every walk of life. Most are children or seniors. Many live in households with working adults.
Many are in school or taking job training courses. Some depend on us entirely, while some
may only need our help once.
Our clients include the 3,100 household referrals made by our Emergency Food
Helpline to a same-day source of food every month, and the 8,000 who received
help with CalFresh (SNAP, or food stamps) applications last year. They may have
seen us on TV, read about us in the news, found
us online or met our staff at an event. Maybe
they know someone who once needed
our help.
They all share a resilience and
dedication to making life
better for themselves
and their children.
That’s what inspires
us at the Food
Bank every day.
“It’s hard to hear your grandson say ‘I’m
hungry’ and have nothing to give them.”

FOR TODAY
ALAMEDA COUNTY COMMUNITY FOOD BANK ANNUAL REPORT 2013 | 4
Innovative child hunger programs
like Children’s BackPack and
Mobile Pantry bridge the food
gap for children who rely on free
or reduced-price school meals,
ensuring they are nourished and
prepared to learn.
ACCESS TO HEALTHY FOOD
At the core of our operations is the procurement, storage, sorting and distribution of healthy food. In FY13,
Alameda County Community Food Bank distributed the equivalent of 22.3 million meals to individuals and
families struggling with the burden of hunger.
We are committed to providing our community with the healthiest options available. Fresh, locally sourced
fruits and vegetables — critical to a well-rounded diet and essential for good health — made up 57 percent
of the food we provided last year, to the tune of 15.2 million pounds.
But hunger relief isn’t just about the quantity and quality of food; it’s also about access. For far too many
people in our county, healthy food isn’t just expensive — it’s out of reach, with neighborhoods barren of
major food retailers. The Food Bank creates healthier environments in these “food deserts” by distributing
food through hundreds of food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other community organizations located
in all corners of Alameda County (see page 8).
We also continue to enhance and expand direct distribution programs, including Children’s BackPack and
Mobile Pantry, through which we bring healthy food to elementary schools to ensure our community’s
most vulnerable families can provide adequate nutrition to their children.
Food for our neighbors means more than a simple bag of groceries or a warm meal. It means children are
nourished and ready to learn. It means seniors won’t have to choose between food and medicine. It means
struggling adults can remain healthy and productive. And it means parents are free from worry as they put
healthy meals on the table for their families.
Alameda County Community Food Bank
creates healthy food environments by
delivering fresh produce to neighborhoods
without grocery retailers or food markets.

LEADING A MOVEMENT FOR CHANGE
Elected officials, including U.S.
Representative Barbara Lee,
regularly turn to the Food Bank for
information about hunger in our
community and the struggles our
clients face every day.
In FY13, Alameda County Community Food Bank took the bold step to reframe hunger as a solvable
problem.
Our role goes far beyond providing food for today — we also give hope for tomorrow. We are leading the
fight against hunger and strive for long-term solutions.
The Food Bank’s Policy and Advocacy Program is more robust than that of any other food bank in
California. Our passionate team of staff and community advocates is a powerful voice in local jurisdictions,
Sacramento and Washington, D.C. In FY13 our grassroots efforts included voter registration for low-income
residents, calling for guaranteed access to healthy meals for schoolchildren, and fighting for a strong safety
net to reduce the number of people who lack resources for food.
For 10 years, we’ve partnered with Alameda County to improve and broaden the reach of CalFresh
(Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps). Our multilingual
Outreach Program was the first of its kind in 2003, and our successful approach serves as the blueprint for
programs across the nation. In FY13 we registered nearly 2,000 households for CalFresh benefits, generating
$7.3 million in economic stimulus for Alameda County.
We continue to work with the city of Oakland and Oakland Unified School District to promote and
strengthen the free Summer Lunch Program, which ensures local schoolchildren can have a healthy lunch
when they don’t have access to school meals. For the second consecutive year, this included the program’s
innovative expansion into Oakland Public Libraries.
Every year on Hunger Action Day,
advocates from across California convene
in Sacramento to educate lawmakers and
rally around hunger issues. More than 100
advocates come with Alameda County
Community Food Bank — by far the largest
contingent statewide.
Hunger is a solvable problem, but we can’t solve it alone. Our advocacy and outreach efforts are rooted
in community support because we are all partners in this work. A strong and healthy community benefits
everyone.

The Food Bank’s Nutrition
Education Program serves our
member agencies and their clients,
as well as schools and other
community partners throughout
Alameda County.
BUILDING NETWORK CAPACITY
It’s no coincidence that Community is our middle name.
Alameda County Community Food Bank is a key source of food and other resources to 240 community
organizations that directly serve our clients. The success of our work depends on our agencies' ability to
meet the evolving — and growing — needs of our community. With the introduction and expansion of
several innovative programs, FY13 was a landmark year for building the capacity of our network.
Produce Hubs bring truckloads of fruits and vegetables to strategic locations throughout the county,
providing a convenient way for our agencies to acquire farm-fresh produce. This program was instrumental
in increasing produce distribution by nearly 25 percent from FY12 to FY13.
Our new Grocery Rescue Program facilitates procurement of unsalable yet safe and healthy food by
agencies from local grocery retailers. The program is instrumental in building stronger community
partnerships, increasing distribution of staple food items and decreasing unnecessary waste. In FY13, the
program resulted in 605,000 meals distributed to our community, rather than going to landfills.
Diet-related illnesses disproportionately affect low-income individuals. Serving 1 in 6 Alameda County
residents, we play a significant role in the health and wellness of our entire community. Our Nutrition
Education Programs have been crucial to our efforts for 20 years, continuing to empower our agencies and
clients to prepare meals that are inexpensive, healthy and satisfying.
Food Bank member agencies meet in
strategic locations throughout Alameda
County to collect fresh produce delivered
by Alameda County Community Food Bank.
Volunteers are the heart of our organization. Last year, community members
served more than 90,000 hours, sorting and packaging food, distributing free
summer lunches, staffing our Emergency Food Helpline, and performing office
tasks to help us pursue our mission for a hunger-free community. Altogether,
volunteer service was the equivalent of 46 full-time staff members — two-thirds
the size of our staff.
“...I enjoy volunteering because I thrive off the
positive energy from other volunteers and the Food
Bank staff. Most important though, I get a warm
feeling in my heart knowing I’m making a difference
in someone’s life.”
— Gail, Food Bank volunteer

Note 1: Feeding America , the national food bank network, valued donated food commodities at $1.69 per pound for FY13.
Note 2: The Food Bank recognizes donated and USDA commodities as a contribution and resulting inventory. Inventory is expensed when food is distributed. The decrease in net assets is due to a decrease in donated inventory. The Food Bank
distributed more donated food in FY13 than it received.
