Gil Michaels
For many of us Baby Boomers,
our slow descent into Geezerville
has meant that Mother’s Day is a
time for melancholy reflection and
remembrance, rather than celebration. In remembering my mom, the
angelic Champagne Rosie (my mom
had to be an angel to put up with
my bloated persona for 50 years),
I prefer to focus on the things that
she loved.
Champagne Rosie loved
Champagne, cheeseburgers, great
pizza and, most of all, giving me
advice.
There was her advice on my
attire: “L’il Puddin, don’t go out
wearing brown pants, a green shirt
and a red hat. You look like a giant
shrub.”
There was her advice on my
grooming: “Honey, I know that you
want to look more mature, but that
little moustache and bad haircut
make you look like a huge Hitler.”
There were her observations
on my love life: “Chubbo, I don’t
care if your girlfriend is the Virgin
Mary, Mother Teresa, Joan of Arc
and Oprah Winfrey all put together,
she’s not good enough for my L’il
Puddin and she’s too fat to be wearing tank tops.”
There was her commentary on

my social skills: “Gil, I know that Croll’s co-owner and Puertas family matriarch, Teresa

I’ll have the lot at [email protected]
list now includes:
1. Croll’s Garlic-Cheese Bread. This dish is a decadent, delicious and glorious “Death By Cheese”; a beautiful, cheesy, gooey, crispy, garlicky delight. When eaten
straight from Croll’s ovens, with their homemade red
sauce, it is truly one of Alameda’s finest culinary treats.
2. Croll’s new Spring Seasonal Pizza. “Fresh local
asparagus, aged Parmesan cheese, creamy mozzarella
and Black Forest ham in our homemade creamy garlic
sauce,” said Lorenzo. “The we top it with lemon zest from
lemons grown in my neighbor’s Alameda backyard.” This
pizza features a superb, aromatic balance of asparagus,
ham, garlic and lemon flavors. Excellent.
3. Croll’s new “Batatista” pizza features thinly sliced
sweet potato with red onions, sheep’s milk feta cheese,
fresh garlic, and California extra-virgin olive oil. An eclectic blend of sweet and salt savoriness, with a mild garlic
punch. Terrific.
4. Croll’s new “Smoky Sue” pizza is topped with
toasted leaves of kale, gorgonzola, Parmesan and lemon
zest, over Croll’s homemade creamy garlic sauce. A
Croll’s guest took one bite of her Smoky Sue and said,
“Oh, my God, I’m in heaven!”
5. Croll’s famous Margherita pizza rounds out the
top five. Lorenzo describes this pizza as, “the classic
Italian pizza made with our special tomato sauce, sliced
Roma tomatoes, creamy mozzarella and fresh basil” (from
Lorenzo’s backyard). Croll’s Margherita is Alameda’s most
popular pizza, and is a favorite of celebrated local culinary
goddess Weezie Mott. It is also a favorite of another Croll’s
guest, a vociferous, pizza loving nine-year-old boy, who
loudly proclaimed it to be, “The best pizza, ever!”
I could easily fill the remaining spots on the Alameda
Great Eats List with goodies from Croll’s new menu,
like their famous Gold Coast and Fernside pizzas and

Clubs Paved Way for Mothers Day
Dennis Evanosky
Julia Ward Howe takes credit for
coming up with Mother’s Day as we
know it today. Her 1870 proclamation put the day on the American
calendar. Howe’s proclamation was
a reaction to death during the Civil
War. She called on mothers to unite
and protest the futility of their sons
killing other mothers’ sons.
By 1873 women’s groups in 18
North American cities were observing Howe’s holiday.
When it came to celebrating
mothers, another woman preceded
Howe by some 15 years. In the 1850s
Anna Reeves Jarvis started Mother
Work Day Clubs, organizations that
focused on providing medicine for
the poor and on improving sanitary
conditions. During the Civil War,
