However, during our junior year our intramural softball team waltzed through the tournament and defeated one of the so-called jock fraternities in the finals. After my unremarkable high school athletic career, playing center field on that Lambda Chi team was a small measure of redemption. We were not as lucky in intramural basketball. When playing against the PiKA’s, I especially recall that every time I took a jump shot, Tom Tredway jabbed a finger in my stomach as I released the ball. I am still waiting for the referee’s whistle. Only because our family and the Tredway family have remained close friends over the years am I still considering forgiving Tom for holding down my point totals. Lasting H-SC values: 1. The Honor Code 2. Dr. Gilmer made my first math class both interesting and fun. I tried to follow his example throughout my teaching career, even though much of our coursework in actuarial science centered around life and death. I had many excellent professors, but Dr. Gilmer was the one who made the most lasting impression on me. Drs. Miller and Kubler came in tied for second. We have enjoyed all of these trips very much. When my wife suggests to me that we go on any trip, I always seem to have something to say from a negative standpoint, as usual, but she reminds me that “We’re not getting any younger.” Favorite H-SC Memory: My freshman year I left school during early football practice to go to Richmond to take my lady friend, now my wife, to a cocktail party. When I returned to school rather late that evening, I tried very hard to sneak into my room. I suddenly looked up and there stood Marshall Ebert, one of our tri-captains. When he inquired where I’d been, I confessed I was at a cocktail party. Hence, the name “Cocktail” which has lasted for 54 years. A lasting H-SC value: When it’s to time to work, work hard. When it’s time to play, do so and enjoy it. Don’t confuse the two—it took me several years to understand this, unfortunately. Richard Foster Glenn PO Box 489, Prospect, VA 23960 Home: (434) 574-6540 [email protected] Spouse: married THEN Undergraduate Degree: BA, Hampden-Sydney Advanced Degree: Ph.D. Duke, 1967 Retired: Graduate School Faculty (Arts and Sciences): Northwestern, 1967-1975; Colgate, 1976-1977; Alabama, 1977-2003 (Dept. Garnett and his wife, Liza James, have two sons, Garnett IV (6) and Claiborne (3). Anne and I recognize how very fortunate we are to have both sones and our grandchildren in Richmond! Undergraduate Degree: BA, Hampden-Sydney Advanced Degree: The Stonier Graduate School of Banking, Rutgers University Retired: I am retired from Crestar Bank, formerly UVB (now SunTrust), as senior V.P. for Trust & Investment Management, Banking was a very rewarding 38.5 year career which commenced two weeks after H-SC graduation. I actually had been a summer employee for the bank while at H-SC with the understanding that I would join their ranks in June ‘62. Note: When I decided to retire at age 60, I still had no formal résumé! Boy, have times changed! Although banking was a most rewarding profession, I now am enjoying involvement in Retail Real Estate with Long & Foster in Richmond. My wife has been with the same company for 22 years and has enjoyed a fantastically successful and rewarding career. In retirement, I recognized, as a licensed agent, I could work out of the same office to assist Anne. We both stay too busy! Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: Anne and I have enjoyed some wonderful travels, Paris, Rome, the Amalfi Coast, Normandy, England, Canada, Pacific NW, and Western U.S. sojourns being among the most memorable. This summer we will try a new adventure, our first DisneyWorld experience with our grandchhildren. Many of our trips have included our children which is a joy! Not having a second home at “tha Rivah,” for many years we have had our kids (and our grandkids, too!) to Virginia Beach, or a Carolina or Georgia Beach, for wonderful family memories. We feel so young, but the older we get the more Anne and I value such time. Favorite H-SC Memory: I have many wonderful H-SC memories. Most involve the wonderful friendships established not only through fraternity life in Chi Phi and on the entire Fraternity Circle, but also through numerous organizations in which I was involved. The fantastic rapport with most faculty members and their families are so treasured... the P.T. Atkinsons, Crawleys, Thompsons, among many. That closeness to the student body, and faculty as well, is like no other campus! Yes, among the best years of my life are those spent in Death Valley! A lasting H-SC value: The highly esteemed standards of ethics and the revered Honor System of H-SC prepared me to seek out the same in both business and social circles. I truly believe I have singled out these values in all endeavors of my life and the business associations I developed. It is all thanks to the nurturing of said ethics and honor at H-SC, to which I am very indebted. Call Dee! A lasting H-SC value: The Honor Code and its success Omicron Delta Kappa Keeping my shotgun in the dorm and hunting before classes in Buffalo Swamp Knowing each other well Peyton R andolph Keller, Jr. 1310 N. Ritchie Court, Apt. 15-C, Chicago, IL 60610 Home: (312) 475-9894 [email protected] THEN Spouse: Kathryn C. Keller, married 39 years Children: none Undergraduate Degree: B.A. Psychology, Hampden-Sydney Advanced Degree: M.S. Administrative and Organizational Behavior, MSW NOW Retired: 20 years, Clinical Social Worker, Department of Veterans Affairs, Hines VA Hospital, Hines, Illinois (outside Chicago). 2 years with Lawrence Hall School for Boys, Outreach Coordinator 3 years, caseworker, Children and Family Services 12 years, County and State Department of Public Aid Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: Right after college, entered the U.S. Air Force aand avoided combat. Served as an engineering and scientific aide at Brooks Air Force Base. Worked on the Apollo moonshot. Failed as a 7th-grade teacher in my first job after service... some of the kids were bigger than I was, and I couldn’t keep discipline in the class. Next job was as an insurance adjuster and found that I was good with interviews, but beaten by an inability to settle claims and keep costs down. Married at age 32 and moved to Chicago. Very happy with the diversity and the intellectual stimulation there. Plays, classes, music, opera, lots of thrift and used book stores! Only three major hospitalizations: two life-threatening carotid artery, hemophilia infection and pneumonia, bilateral hernia Favorite H-SC Memory: Some of them I would rather not remember... Ah, the follies of youth, a time of exploration and testing the limits. All night on assignments that had been put off... the peer pressure, the partying! A couple of specific incidents come to mind: Waking up one snowy winter morn in my bed outside the upperclass dorm! The stealing of a white policeman statue from Farmville in the late 50’s. It was brought to Hampden-Sydney, painted black, and returned to the streets of Farmville. The Volkswagen brought inside and left on the 1st floor lobby. The honking of its horn must have driven the teachers crazy. There were a lot of creative pranks played on each other. It relieved the stress of the high academic expectations. It increased the bonds. A lasting H-SC value: I think that the smallness of the community and the tradition of greeting your fellow students going to and from classes is a good memory. The Honor Code helped me develop my integrity. It was important that I take personal responsibility for my actions. Lastly, although many men or women might now want to admit it, but going to school with only people of your own sex really helped me focus on academics at times and allowed time for relaxation and socializing at appropriate times. Robert Gordon McKenney 565 Harper Road, Eastsound, WA 98245 Home: (360) 376-7429 [email protected] THEN Spouse: Sylvia, married 41 years. Since 2002 we live 3-4 months of the year in Waldkirchen, Germany. The remaining 8-9 months of the year, we live on an island in the Salish Sea near the Canadian border. My occupation allowed me to live in 11 different locations (10 States) from Florida to Washington from 1962 to 2002. My travel experience included three trips (1970-73) to Leipzig and Zeitz, German Democratic Republic, and to Budapest, Hungary. Sylvia and I met with friends and her relatives who lived in the GDR. I officiated at U.S. Swimming National meets in Florida, Washington, and California. Favorite H-SC Memory: I have many rich and valuable memories from my time at Hampden- Sydney College. I was young and probably could have taken better advantage of what was offered, but it still worked out well. A lasting H-SC value: Hampden-Sydney College provided me with a solid liberal arts education. For me, life is a continuing education. H-SC provided me with a base from which to expand my knowledge of history, literature, the German language, philosophy, music, and art. If I had known then what I know now, I would probably have spent my time more wisely. Donald Barry Nolan 3574 Peakwood Drive, Roanoke, VA 24014 Home: (540) 343-4522 [email protected] THEN Spouse: Carolyn Galbraith Nolan, married 47 years Children: Karen and husband are ER Doctors at Carilion; they have 2 sons. Laura is a stay-at-home Mom and has 2 sons and 1 daughter. Doug works in e-commerce for Orvis and just married in November. Undergraduate Degree: BS, Hampden-Sydney Advanced Degree: MD, UVA. Internship Wake Forest; Residency UVA Neurology including 3 month fellowship at Queen Square, London. NOW Retired: I practiced neurology in Roanoke from 1971 until retirement in 2005. Currently, I occasionally fill in for other neurologists who are ill or away Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: I have lived happily with my wife for 47 years and have great children, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law as well as five healthy grandchildren. My best travel memories are with family. Everyone our age has had medical problems; we just have to put them out of our mind and keep going. Favorite H-SC Memory: The first week at H-SC some upperclassmen took a car load of us freshmen to Chapel Hill for Pizza---in the middle of the week. We all thought, “Man, this must be the way it’s going to be all year.” How naive we were. Months later when we were initiated into Theta Chi, the pledges were taken miles away into the boondocks and told to get back the best way we could. We were about half dressed and cold, so Vince Sexton went to a dark farmhouse and persuaded an old farmer to take us back to school. We were not about to go back to the fraternity house, so we went to our dorm and went to bed. Our fraternity brothers were out looking for us all night. There is a rumor that someone called Dean Crawlety and said that they had lost a few freshmen. There are so many stories about H-SC but the funniest always seemed to be about our freshman year. My warmest memories are about the professors. Most of them gave us personal attention if we asked for it. Dr. Ty Miller and Dr. Don Kubler were as tough or tougher than the professors in medical school, but if you worked really hard and put in enough time, you could do OK. I was one of the few people who had to wear a uniform and go to a reserve meeting in Farmville every Tuesday night for four years. I was always appreciative that I did not get a lot of heckling (at least not a whole lot) from the other guys. A lasting H-SC value: I must confess that I could see no value in some of the required courses; nor did it make any sense to me that we had to go to chapel on Tuesday and some time in assembly on Thursday. I just was not mature enough to realize the value of a liberal arts education. Now with the aid of hindsight, I see that this is the way life is. You do what is required and if you do the very best you can, you are always rewarded, even if it is just by your own satisfaction. Others have spoken eloquently of the Honor System. I agree: a man is judged throughout his life by his integrity and honesty Stephen Dulany Proctor 499 Jarvis Point Lane, Kilmarnock, VA 22482 Home: (804) 435-3335 [email protected] THEN Spouse: Jean Hatfield (Deceased June 2011), married 40 years Children: 2 Daughers, 5 Grandchildren Shannon Lipsteuer—Bradley, Ella, and Jack Shaune Colliver—Bryadon and Brody Undergraduate Degree: BS, Hampden-Sydney Advanced Degree: LLB or JD NOW Retired: Senior Counsel (1969-1983), Export-Import Bank of the US Manager (1983-1995), Export-Import Bank of the US Managing Partner PROVA, LLC (1995-2000) (trade finance company) Member of Virginia State Bar Member of US Delegation to the Paris Club (19871995) Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: Traveled extensively- Middle East, Egypt, Europe, Mexico, Central and South America on Business Favorite H-SC Memory: Rat Races as a Freshman A lasting H-SC value: Lasting Friendship William Robbins R agsdale 514 Heilig Avenue, Salisbury, NC 28144 Home: (704) 630-0130 [email protected] Spouse: Annie Joe, married 35 years Children: 3 children and 7 grandchildren THEN Undergraduate Degree: BA, Hampden-Sydney Advanced Degree: BD, Duke Divinity School Retired: 41 years in Methodist pastorate, during which 15 years were spent on leave from the church doing magic shows in elementary schools in NC and VA NOW Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: 2 open-heart surgeries, divorced in 1973, remarried in 1976, worked for the Ecumenical Institute in Chicago 1971-75, during which time lived in San Francisco a year and traveled to several Asian cities including Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Rangoon. Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: By far my 50-year highlights have been my marriage to June, raising a family and watching our daughters become smart, contributing citizens. I was married to my former wife, Susan, for 11 years. We were divorced while I was in Nashville at Vanderbilt. We have 2 wonderful daughters, Liz and Catherine. I worked with June in Nashville and we just “clicked.” We got hitched in 1976. We have 3 daughters, Ellen, Anna, and Mary. Our 5 daughters are really soul mates. Through our daughters June and Susan have become good friends. June and I have traveled extensively. Our most interesting trip was across Russia on the Trans-Siberian Railroad with my brother, his wife, and two daughters. We also had a wonderful trip to China with a large group of friends. My favorite family trip was a “Northwest Venture” with June and our girls. June and I are really a solid team. We enjoy being together landscaping, ball room dancing, skiing, tennis, and traveling. June is a Physical Therapist and worked at the same hospital with me for years. I fixed hips, knees, etc. and June helped make the surgery work. In recent years together we have gone to Haiti regularly with an annual Orthopedic Mission. Favorite H-SC Memories: 1) Freshman Year: My father died between my Junior and Senior years in high school. I entered Hampden- Sydney with the attitude that I could not “goof off”, and I had to earn my way through college. Two professors, Dr. Tyler Miller (Chemistry) and Professor William Hoffman (English Composition), from the start “lit my fire”. On my first day in their classes they both declared and outlined what they expected from their students. I buckled down and did so well in Chemistry that I chose it as a major. Professor Hoffman taught me writing skills I have never forgotten. As a freshman I earned the reputation of a “good student” for which I was recognized throughout my four years of college. Also, I was tagged with the nickname “Horsehead” by Marshall Ebert during freshman football. I did not like it at the time, but now I wear the “Horsehead” college nickname with honor. 2) First visit back to campus: After graduation in 1962 I did not again set foot on campus until 1978. I had been preoccupied with my very long medical education. June had never been to Hampden-Sydney. She is from Eastern North Carolina and went to East Carolina University. In early August 1978 we left her home in Elizabeth City and made a bee-line to a small college in the woods and cornfields of Southside Virginia. Arriving with a carload of family, we all had to use any bathroom. I found the Library open for such and walked in with June and children. I was greeted by the Librarian and his secretary with a hearty “Hi, Bill. How are you doing?” June’s jaw dropped as I was recognized after 16 years. I assured my family that I had spent many hours in the Library as a student and told my kids that I could have qualified as a “nerd.” We then found my old coach Stokeley Fulton and old friend Gil Simms at the Gym, preparing for early football practice. Stokeley presented me with an old, very large helmet which would only fit a “Horsehead.” June and Gil commiserated about training and physical therapy. A lasting H-SC value: Personnel honesty. Four years of regularly pledging in writing a declaration of personnel honesty embedded in me a foundation of character of which I am most proud. The tradition of the honor code as the basis for student behavior was to me the foundation of the Hampden-Sydney College experience. Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: Susan and I have taken cruises to Alaska (with Bob Batten and his wife Jane), around Italy and two cruises in the northern part of Europe. Favorite H-SC Memory: Rooming with Tim Butler, being a member of the football team, and being in PiKA. I believe Tim was responsible for all the nicknames given to the class members. Tim was also a practical joker. “Tim stories” will always be a part of the class of 1962. A lasting H-SC value: The Hampden-Sydney Honor Code has had a strong and lasting influence on my life. Playing football for Stokeley Fulton was an incredible experience. He was more than an excellent coach. He was a motivator; he made me want to play my best and he was just a really good person. Yeargin 8 Barrington Drive, Greensboro, NC 27408 Home: (336) 545-1958 [email protected] Spouse: Martha Taylor Yeargin, married 49 years THEN NOW Undergraduate Degree: BA (English), HampdenSydney Retired: After graduation attended OTS and became a 2nd LT and spent four years in the Air Force, including one year in Viet Nam. After the Air Force, I went to work for Burlington Industries for thirty-two years. I filled many different jobs with Burlington, with the last twenty as Executive Vice President of several different Divisions within the Company. I took early retirement in April of 2000. Civic Organizations, Volunteer Work: Rotary, Urban Ministry, Barnabas, Wheels to Work, Church Vestry, Lay Reader, Church Usher, Transitional Housing, English Teacher for Refugees, Tutor for schools, Church Men’s Club, Mobile Meals, Christian Social Ministry, and Pastoral Care. Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: We lived in Ireland for three years. I was part of a group that built and started up four plants in that country. We lived in Tullamore in County Offaly. The location was in the middle of the country between Dublin and Shannon. Our three children attended school there and as a family, we became close. Many friends were made there by all five of us and we still communicate with several of them. We were able to travel all over Europe. My favorite of all was London. We went there several times and our youngest daughter spent a college semester there and of course we had to go visit her and our friends in Ireland while she was there. My tour in Viet Nam was not great but Martha and I were able to meet in Honolulu on R&R— what a beautiful place and full of nice people! Associated with my work with Burlington we spent time in New York and were able to see some great plays, visit all the museums and wonderful restaurants. Also I spent time in India, an interesting country but with too many people and so much poverty. I was always glad to leave. The other country that I spent a lot of time in was Mexico. As the textile industry moved south, Burlington was in the lead. We had operated a plant there since the early 60s, then in the 90s we built three more and bought two. With all this going on I was in Mexico at least once a month at different locations. This led to a lot of travel, some unsafe conditions, and frustration, thus early retirement. Favorite H-SC Memory: H-SC was a great fit for me, being from a small town and graduating from a small high school, I did not realize it at the time, but I would have been lost in a larger place. One of my favorite stories is from Dr. Roppʼs class. He walked in one day and sat down at his desk, looked around the class with the I-dare-you look on his face, and asked the question, “What makes the world go around?” I raised my hand and said, “Love.” He looked at me, shook his head, and said, “Class dismissed” and walked out. Every one could not believe this and for a moment no one moved. Then we flew out of there. I remember being on the football team, enjoying the fellowship of the students, being a part of the yearbook staff and a fraternity member. A lasting H-SC value: The Honor Code left a lasting effect on me. I have used these guidelines in all I did after H-SC. My children and grandchildren have heard me speak often on being honest and truthful to yourself and to others. MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1962 (compiled from the academic catalogue and the tiger) C.
