Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: In 2004 I lost my wife,
Rebecca. We had been very happily married for almost 42
years. I have now married a lovely woman, Elizabeth. We
will be celebrating our fourth anniversary this June and still
feel like newlyweds. Between us we have five children. My
three are a bit older and scattered all over the globe, including a son who lives in Singapore. Elizabeth’s two sons are
still in college, one at Virginia Tech and the other at University of Alabama. Our children are healthy, well adjusted,
and we’re able to see them with some frequency. I also have
nine grandchildren. They are what you would expect in a
group whose ages run from 5 to 14: tons of energy, lots of
surprises, and tremendous curiosity about the world which
they will soon be running. With that good fortune how
could I be anything but upbeat?

Favorite H-SC Memory: I’m not sure why I decided to study Greek under Dean David Wilson, but I did. It quickly became apparent the entire class consisted of students planning to
go into the ministry and thus preparing themselves to translate biblical passages from the
original Greek. There were only two exceptions: John Brinkley and myself. It also became
quickly apparent to me that Brinkley had a bent for ancient languages. After a month
or two of toiling in the vineyards—so to speak—I approached John and suggested what
I thought was a most ingenious plan. It went something like this:
Allen: “John, do you realize we are the only non-divinity students in this class?”
Brinkley: “Yes, you’re correct.”
Allen: “Don’t you think we should band together and benefit from each other’s observations and note taking?”
Brinkley: “Just where are you going with that?”
Allen: “Well, it might be helpful for us to study together for tests and exams.”
Brinkley: “That’s an intriguing notion, but it will cost you a fifth of Vat 69 for tests and
two fifths of Vat 69 for exams.”
That’s when I discovered Brinkley was no fool. On the other hand, none of the other
divinity students had figured this angle out, so I would have to say I was no fool either.
John and I both did fine in Greek, but he did much “finer” than I did. And, yes, studying
with Brinkley gave me a decided edge.
A lasting H-SC value: Three things come to mind. First, the friendships established at
Hampden-Sydney during my attendance were one of the most meaningful “values” of
the Hampden-Sydney experience. The friends I made in the late-1950’s continue to be
dear friends today. The second “value” was the conviction that with a Hampden-Sydney
education I was prepared to do almost anything. And I proved it by not only going into
the advertising business in New York after law school, but also going into the consulting
business (also in NYC) and then finally pumping gas with East Coast Oil Corporation in
Richmond, Virginia. That’s as wide a divergence of occupations as you are going to find.
The third “value” would certainly have to be the sense of honor and integrity instilled in
us both overtly and subtly during our four (or more) years at the College. Our word is our
bond. What a great legacy!

A lasting H-SC value: The Liberal Arts approach provided
a solid base for all studies, especially in history.

Semi-Retired: I did general surgery residency training at
the University of Kentucky Medical Center and otolaryn­
gology residency at the University of Virginia Medical
Center. Practiced otolaryngology in Asheville, NC, for 23
years. Then went into hospital management in Asheville as
Senior VP of Medical Affairs and subsequently a similar
position in Ocala, FL. Since 1999 I have been a consultant
to hospitals across the country in matters of medical staff
governance, accreditation and quality. Still doing some
work now, but I have cut back from the pace of 35-38
hospitals a year.
Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: Married to Carol
Walton for 39 years. She died in 2001 following a 14-year
cancer battle. Have since married a wonderful person that
was a long time family friend. Jane and I are now enjoying
life with an annual monthlong skiing vacation (this year
Utah) and an annual trip in July to Oregon for the International Pinot Noir Celebration, followed by two to three

weeks at the Oregon coast. We spend the winter in Everglades City, FL, a funky little fishing village with a definitely laid-back lifestyle! In spite of all of that we still are able to be
gainfully employed part-time! I have been fortunate to have had a chance to travel through
Europe and have visited 49 of the United States through either business or pleasure travel
(still have North Dakota to get to).
Favorite H-SC Memory: Having the opportunity to take classes under Mr. H. B. Overcash.
The dread of realizing I was not prepared for the daily recitation.
And finally, being able to converse with my father about Mr. Overcash’s classes and lecture
style, because he also had him as a professor when he attended Hampden-Sydney.
A lasting H-SC value: The liberal arts preparation allowing continuing definition of my
career.

summer of 2008 and spent 3 weeks.
Favorite H-SC Memory: Guarding the campus the night
before the Randolph-Macon Game.
Hazing by the sophomore class, sending the sophomore
President on a one-way ticket....

Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: My wife and I have
travelled extensively in the United States, visiting nearly
all of the National Parks. Some of our RV excursions have
included trips to Canada and Newfoundland.
Through the years, I have entered many races. For the
last two years, I have participated in the Angels Triathlon
in Lynchburg, Virginia. Other activities include bicycling,
fishing, and golf. I have gotten two holes in one.
My wife and I spend our winters in Florida where we
especially enjoy golfing, square dancing, and round dancing.
Our most enjoyable times are when we are with our
family and watching our grandchildren participate in
sporting events, dance recitals, and numerous school and
church activities.
Favorite H-SC Memory: Spring break in Florida.

excellence. To be honest with self and others.

4. Virginia State Health Department, as toxicologist
dealing with various health effects and problems with
chemicals in Virginia; worked to implement the Virginia
Toxic Substances Information Act passed by the VA
General Assembly to prevent another Kepone event in
Virginia. Background: Kepone was a pesticide that due
to improper use and disposal resulted in worker health
problems (neurological) and contamination of James River
below Richmond, VA. To prevent another such incident,
VA Legislators passed the Toxic Substances Information

Act requiring all firms in VA to disclose, confidentially, to the Health Department all
chemicals (and their location) in VA. I was among three toxicologists and two chemists
who reviewed the submitted inventory to attempt to identify and place in class 1 chemicals
considered most threatening to human health and to the environment. I authored the
report, for the first 5 chemicals so designated by the Governor’s Advisory Council for Toxic
Substances.
5. Toxicologist with Life Systems, a private firm contractor in Washington, DC. We
reviewed carcinogenics studies submitted under the PMN Statute of the toxic substances
control act, implemented by USEIA.
6. Senior Toxicologist, United States Environmental protection Agency, Health Effects Division, Washington, DC from 1984 until retirement. This work involved reviewing major
health effects studies (animal models) for pesticides; carcinogenicity studies, developmental
toxicology studies (birth defects); neurotoxicology studies especially to address potential
neurological effects in infants and children resulting from chemical contaminants in the
US food supply, as required under a new federal legislative act “Food Quality Protection
Act.” Developed special reports: “Cognitive Effects of Cholinesterate Inhibition” and
“Ocular Effects of Organic Phosphates.”
Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: Have developed, with my brother Wayne, a photo
exhibit of our Dad’s photographs taken of Winston Churchill and General Dwight Eisenhower on their visit to Richmond and Williamsburg, March 8, 1946, shortly after the end
of WWII. This visit came just three days after Churchill made his “Iron Curtain” speech
in Fulton, MO. Our Dad (Frank Dementi) was sole photographer when the ChurchillEisenhower party convened for social events in Raleigh Tavern in Williamsburg. This
exhibit we have presented so far (with talk and refreshments) at Suitable for Framing (art
gallery in Richmond, VA); Lakeside Presbyterian Church; Williamsburg Regional Library;
Fort Lee (Quartermaster Museum) outside Petersburg, VA; Patriots Colony, Williamsburg,
VA ; and one is planned in the summer at the Hopewell Historical Society, Hopewell,
VA. Would be pleased if H-SC considered our presenting at the College sometime. FYI in
connection with this photo exhibit, as we develop (write) our own book on Dad’s photos—
have read lengthy biographies on General Eisenhower and Winston Churchill and Robert
Oppenheimer (H-SC’s Dr. Bliss would be proud to find a B.S. who has become such a
history buff for WWII). In connection with this work, my wife and I have visited Westminster College Presbyterian in Fulton, MO, where Churchill gave “Iron Curtain” speech
in 1946, and visited Ike’s home in Gettysburg, PA. We have been involved with members
of the Churchill Society.
Favorite H-SC Memory: When a freshman at H-SC, during registration (when we all
freshmen wore beanies with nametags around our necks) I was on my way to register for

class and passed another freshmen whom I did not know, but he had a book under his arm
entitled “Toward Understanding Jesus” and I thought “What’s with this guy?” Here we
are free at last from parents and high school and here he’s walking around with a book like
that. Well, when I went to register—lo and behold- this was to be my text also. All freshmen must take Bible (New Testament, and this along with the Bible were the texts—so I
walked away with a copy of the same book under my arm—well as it turned out, this was
the best thing that ever happened to me—being compelled to study our lord and savior,
Jesus Christ. I was a chemistry major and would likely never have chosen Bible 101 on my
own. I still have my copy of “Toward Understanding Jesus” and often refer to it when
preparing Sunday school lectures. Incidentally the freshman I passed that day and didn’t
know, later became my Theta Chi fraternity brother John Crump.
A lasting H-SC value: This lasting value is a continuation of the above—in my view the
best liberal arts education should include bible study—old and new testament—as was
required when I was at H-SC. I don’t believe one can appreciate fully the history of American and European civilization apart from the influence of the Bible. To remove it from
public interaction is wrong historically—and wrong in placing Christ in a back room. His
words are as true today as ever before. One day I was attending a concert at the Carpenter
Center in Richmond (either a symphony orchestra or an opera) and during intermission
I “bumped” into H-SC’s Dr. Graves Thompson. And during the brief time we talked—
I told him that H-SC’s requiring me to study the bible was the greatest thing of all I had
obtained from H-SC. He “lit up” and said “tell them that”—well until now I have failed
to honor his request. Another good memory—travel with Ned Crawley, Choir Director,
as member of H-SC Men’s Choir singing concerts and all the great rehearsals we had.
I remember and value much what Dean Crawley repeatedly said to us: “You must always
be a Hampden-Sydney gentlemen” and this I have attempted to do and with much pride
I tell folks I went to H-SC.

Working: July 31, 2009, recognized as a life member of the
VA State Bar Association. This is awarded to a person who
has practiced law for over 40 years, is over 70 years of age,
and is in good standing.

Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: I took two twelve-day
trips to Europe, first flew to Paris, then took a train to
Vienna, Hamburg, Cologne, to Paris then home. Second
trip, flew to Paris, train to Amsterdam, Geneva, to Paris,
from Paris to London, from London back to Paris and
then flew home. Both trips were quite historic and anyone
who has not gone to Europe should go there.
Since 1974, I go to Clearwater Beach, Florida, for
baseball spring training (35 straight years!). I visit with
Marty Brennanman, the Broadcaster for the Cincinnati
Reds, who is from Portsmouth, VA, and who is a friend
of mine. I play golf in the morning and watch baseball in
the afternoon and have dinner at night. It’s golf, baseball,
dinner, and sunny weather.
Other vacations that were nice were Hawaii, Acapulco,
Nassau, Bermuda, and San Juan, Puerto Rico.
I have also gone on golf trips with friends approximately twenty times to Hilton Head Island, SC and to Myrtle
Beach, SC; have travelled to Myrtle Beach, SC to golf with
groups probably over 50 times.

Favorite H-SC Memory: I loved to play basketball in Williamsburg, VA, against the William & Mary Indians because I was from Portsmouth, VA, and W&M was in the Southern Conference. We were in the Mason-Dixon Conference. It was a very exciting moment
for me and many of my friends came up from Portsmouth, VA which was a short drive, to
see those games.
Being a member of Hampden-Sydney College baseball team, second baseman, in 1957,
1958, and 1959. We were the Mason-Dixon Conference Champion all three of those years.
Hampden-Sydney beat Norfolk William & Mary. I hit a buzzer beater in this game.
On the Norfolk William & Mary team that night were five close friends of mine from
Portsmouth, VA: Butt, Hoffman, Griffin, Pratt, and Ainsworth, and I have continued to
be friends with them most of my life. I was the only player on the Hampden-Sydney team
from Portsmouth.
A lasting H-SC value: I am now 72 years of age and have always been an eternal optimist.
I have very much enjoyed practicing law, playing amateur sports (basketball, baseball, and
softball) and I still enjoy each day.
The four years I had at Hampden-Sydney College are the greatest four years of my life
without question. Most of my other Hampden-Sydney friends also say the same. What a
wonderful four years, and what a wonderful place. I say thanks to Hampden-Sydney College for allowing me to attend.

Favorite H-SC Memory: Freshman year basketball game in
Gammon Gym against a strong Mt. Saint Mary’s team, an
upset victory for the Tigers. Freshmen “dressed up” with
crazy outfits, banged on pots and pans, were spirited, and
“rode” the visiting team unmercifully. A great example of
school spirit!

Record, even though I did not do well academically in
high school, Hampden-Sydney took a chance on me by
accepting my application for admission, and even gave me
a scholarship. My academics finally came together for me
and it really built up my self-esteem. As a result I was able to
graduate with honors, go on to graduate from the University of Virginia Law School, and have a career that I have
loved. None of this would have happened except for the
help Hampden-Sydney and my wife, Molly, gave me. I have
always deeply appreciated the College for this.

Favorite H-SC Memory: My favorite H-SC story did not
take place on campus, but several thousand miles away
in Eagle, Alaska (population, under 100!) on the Yukon
river, about 200 miles from the nearest paved road. I met a
couple there from Minnesota (we were the only visitors in
town), and after awhile in the conversation, I mentioned
going to H-SC, the “small, all-men’s liberal arts college in
Virginia... you’ve probably never heard of it!” They both
beamed and said that H-S was one of their favorite places
to visit! What a shock it was to hear this in Alaska, where
I often fielded questions such as “is Virginia on the coast?”

or “is it near Pennsylvania?,” etc. It turned out that the man had retired from a government
job in D.C., during which time they lived in Arlington. They had no children and had
“adopted” two neighborhood boys who went to H-S and the couple visited them often.
A lasting H-SC value: An outstanding liberal arts education provided in a wholesome, caring environment, during which time I established lifelong friendships.

Favorite H-SC Memory: Dr. Ben R. Lacy was the minister
of the College Church when I was at H-SC. Dr. Lacy was
my mentor and dear friend. He always let my dates stay at
his house for dance weekends, etc. We spent hours talking
about everything and he is responsible for my going to the
seminary. He also married Charlotte and me and baptized
our first child. I was also very close to President and Mrs.
Joseph Robert, who spoiled me with many delicious desserts at their home.
At Dr. Lacy’s request, I preached my first sermon. He
asked me to preach at the Village Presbyterian Church in
Charlotte Court House, which had been the church of my

paternal grandmother. Dr. Lacy also asked me to visit weekly at a near-by nursing home
(Mrs. Thaxton’s), which I did for three years, conducting a devotional time and hymn sing.
Since I did not know any of the “old time” hymns, I had to learn all new hymns.
A lasting H-SC value: H-SC helped me to learn the value of lasting friendships. I deeply
appreciated the small size, where everyone knew each other and felt comfortable visiting to
talk to professors.
Dr. Graves Thompson helped me to learn to appreciate classical music. I wish that I had
been able to take his Art Appreciation Class.
Over the years, I have grown to truly appreciate the meaning of “A Hampden-Sydney
Gentleman.”

Some travel highlights include having played Ailsa with my
brother at Turnberry, Scotland, before the 2009 British Open,
having a beer at U Fleku Beer Garden, oldest brewery in Prague,
established in 1499; watching fireworks from atop a boat in Budapest; visits to Las Vegas and Biloxi, MS.... Memories include
walking on Hitler’s Parade Ground in Nuremburg, waking up
at dawn surrounded by glaciers in Alaska, touring Franco’s tomb
in the Valley of the Fallen, and seeing Picasso’s Guernica; experiencing Gaudi’s architecture in Barcelona; driving into Avila,
Spain, in an out-of-season snow storm in April; crossing the

A lasting H-SC value: The value of my Hampden-Sydney
experience is found in the many friendships formed over
the years among alumni who attended before and after
me. After having attended grammar and high school with
my close and oldest friend Bobby Bray, I followed him to
Hampden-Sydney where we roomed together our junior
and senior years. As children, we lived two blocks apart
and since our return to Portsmouth, we still live in close
proximity. Upon arriving at Hampden-Sydney in the fall
of 1956, I met Earl Griffin, who became my closest friend
at Hampden-Sydney. Following graduation, we both
entered T. C. Williams School of Law at the University of
Richmond. In the year 1968, we formed the firm of Griffin
& Pappas while at the same time being assistants in the
Portsmouth Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office—which
in those days allowed us to conduct a civil practice. Since
1968, Earl and I have been law partners, joint owners and
constant companions, virtually being together most every
day for the last 53 years. My life has truly been enriched
through the many established Hampden-Sydney friendships, especially Bobby and Earl. How lucky can you be!

Working: Having attended Law School at UVA for 1 year
and deciding that this was not my passion, I started working for J.C. Wheat & Company in 1961 as a stock broker.
I opened two successful branch offices; one in 1969 in
Newport News, Virginia, and then in 1979, in Hampton,
Virginia, serving as Branch Manager of both. In 1991,
I became a graduate of the Firm’s Financial Planning
Institute and earned the designation of Certified Portfolio
Manager in 1992. I received the prestigious J. C. Wheat
Community Service Award in 1991 and the firm’s Lifetime
Achievement Award in 1994. Currently I am a team member of the Saunders/Holt Investment Consulting Group
for Wells Fargo Advisors in Hampton, Virginia. This is
our 7th, and hopefully the last, corporate name change
since 1961. Our once small regional firm is now the third
largest brokerage firm in the USA.
Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: I have had the privilege
of extensive traveling, both in the USA and other parts of
the world. This experience began in 1958 with three KSIG
brothers: Tom Allen, Whitey Robertson, and myself. We
traveled in 17 countries in Europe for three months for the
total cost of $1,136 each. We were going to be “cool,” grow
a beard, etc., but we saw the “ugly” American at work and
decided to be H-SC gentlemen—polite and clean. This
paid off in spades. The student ship going over the pond
had 700 students; 500 girls and 200 guys. When we three
put the H-SC KSIG basement shag on these Northern
girls—well...we were “Virginia Gentlemen.” End of story.

I personally believe that the more you travel, the more you educate yourself on other
people’s cultures. This enables you to grow and appreciate many things that we take for
granted in the USA.
Favorite H-SC Memory: “Who” cut down the tree across Five Forks Road in a car race?
Who remembers “Goldilocks” at Cedarbrook? Who remembers Throckmorton’s store . . .
the cheapest beer in town! We experienced numerous road trips when we were young and
dumb, and those road trips will remain in the minds of those of us who participated—and
survived to tell about them!
A few of us also enjoyed our road trips with the Glee Club under Dean Crawley. Dean
Crawley was truly dedicated to H-SC and his unselfish efforts with the Glee Club. He
helped us to mature and learn from tireless commitment to represent H-SC in its finest
light, especially to small churches in Virginia and at women’s colleges where we performed.
And many of us remember Reggie Smith, who made our beds and served as a bartender. Many of us would find Reggie every time we returned to campus and we would slip
him a $20 bill to thank him one more time!
A lasting H-SC value: The “fraternity bonding” that lasts a lifetime is a true H-SC value.
H-SC was definitely the right college for me. The impact Dr. Thompson had on my life
is immeasurable. He was my mentor and he lived his life as he taught it. There were three
Latin words that best described Dr. Thompson and these were said at his funeral. They
were...
GRAVITAS: Be responsible for your own actions.
SIMPLICITAS: Work hard and earn a simple honest living.
PIETAS: Be responsible for your family, your community, your church, your country and
your god..
I feel privileged to have been a part of the great H-SC class of 1960. H-SC, with the
help of our parents, the Honor Code and its traditions, has helped each of us to be leaders
and good citizens. We possess the understanding and character to make the right choices
despite the pressure to sacrifice principles for expediency, self promotion, etc.
May all in our class benefit from our H-SC experiences and may we all work together
to make H-SC and our world a better and kinder place to live, grow and foster future leaders.
As we celebrate our 50th Reunion and those reunions in the future, as members of the
Patrick Henry Society, let us remember to give back to the College, as those before us have
given back, and to preserve the H-SC experience for young men in the future.

Consulting Part Time: In my early career I worked on design
and construction of petrochemical plants based in NYC. I
spent many years managing multimillion-dollar industrial
and commercial construction projects for owners and contractors, including the Charlotte Coliseum. I was appointed
president of Southern Engineering Company (structural steel
fabricator) in Charlotte until it was sold. I currently provide
construction consulting as a licensed professional engineer on
a part-time basis.
Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: I spent one summer in Iran
overseeing construction of a fertilizer plant on the Persian
Gulf. This experience allowed me to see Italy on the way over
and England on the return trip. I learned a lot about that part
of the world.
Favorite H-SC Memory: I remember the night McIlwaine
Hall burned our freshman year.
A lasting H-SC value: I chose H-SC because of size and reputation and it proved to be the best choice that could be made.
I will always remember those good years for many reasons.

Retired: Whew! The last 50 years! OK, here goes!
Upon graduating from college, I went to NYC for 18
years, where I pursued my love of acting which had begun
at Longwood College, performing in eight productions
under the guidance of David Wiley. In NYC I began
working at Time Magazine as a copyboy along with Dick
Cavett. Of course this was to pay the bills. Then I was
lucky enough to be seen by Joseph Papp, the producer of
such later hits as “Hair,” “Rent,” and numerous others, and
he gave me my union card. Performing with a children’s
theater group led to my first Broadway play, “Rosencrantz
and Guildenstern Are Dead” in 1967. We won the Tony
that year and the show ran until 1968, whereupon I had already signed a contract for the musical “Canterbury Tales.”
There followed other productions and finally I ended
up in “The Magic Show” with Doug Henning and I
stayed with the company for three years. All the time
I was involved with theater, I was also performing in
commercials and modeling for printwork. I loved NYC
but finally wanted to try my hand at film and movies, so
I re-located to Hollywood in 1978. Once again luck was
with me and I signed with agents in California and started
commercials on the West Coast. Theater was also available
and I performed with Sally Kellerman and Kevin Kline in
“Holiday” as well as various theater groups.
I had a second home in Laguna Beach where I would
escape to on weekends. In 1994 the Northridge earthquake
destroyed my condominium, and so Laguna became my
prime property. Finally, so many of my friends had abandoned Laguna, that I decided to sell and move to Palm
Springs, where my friends had relocated. One of my best

moves. At this tender age it is good to be among seniors who understand and sometimes
commiserate with me. I’m actively involved in square dancing and a walking group. I have
now participated in four theater productions at a Palm Springs venue, the last being Alfred
Doolittle in “My Fair Lady.”
So life is good and I’m enjoying the desert life. Think I will stay here awhile.

Favorite H-SC Memory: Memories of Lancaster Brown, the
Chi Phi caretaker, telling stories of bygone years involving
fraternity alumni.
A lasting H-SC value: I am proud to be a graduate of
Hampden-Sydney College. This school, the 10th oldest
college in the United States, is rich in both history and
tradition, and provides its students and graduates with a
quality education and lasting friendships.

Favorite H-SC Memory: My earliest memory of H-SC is
the rat line. Learning the football schedule backwards and
forwards was intimidating but character building. Most
importantly, the freshmen class was taught to respect the

upperclassmen and the faculty.
A lasting H-SC value: William Hoffman was my favorite teacher. He taught me how to be
creative and to appreciate good writing. Bill became one of my closest friends after college
and it was my great honor to speak at his funeral. I will always be indebted to him.
My classmates were, and remain, my closest friends. My roommates Tom Allen and
Bill Saunders have been important friends for over 50 years, and it is very satisfying now to
serve on the College’s board with these gentlemen.

Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: Travelled four continents. I have enjoyed renovating old buildings. I helped
to preserve three houses in Brooklyn in the 70’s and 80’s.
More recently I have worked on two 18th-century historic
houses in Lynchburg, Tennessee. One is a former jail built
in 1869 and the other is an 1890 cottage. Come to Lynchburg, Tennessee to see them!
Favorite H-SC Memory: A lot of my memories have been
sworn to secrecy. However, one does come to mind. One
evening during my freshman year (I was rooming with
Ray Wallace above the infirmary), the bell tower was
exploding with sound. McIlwaine Hall was burning. I ran
into the building, which I had never been in before, up the
side staircase to the top floor. I did not have any trouble
seeing for the whole place was on fire. It was a large wide
open hall the size of the whole floor, burning through the
roof. I quickly retreated to watch the entire building burn
to the ground. I have never known who started the fire,
but I am sure it was arson.

Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: As a member of the
British-American Preacher’s Interchange, I spent two
months in the UK preaching in the churches of different
denominations. I also enjoyed pulpit swaps with pastors in
Canada and the UK on other occasions as well.
Favorite H-SC Memory: It’s a toss-up between the day
Dr. Ropp threw me out of class for being a wise-mouthed
sophomore and the time Bill Ware told Dr. Thompson
about “the cleaf waves” in Ovid.
A lasting H-SC value: Comparing notes with others of our
student generation, I realize how much independence we
were given at Hampden-Sydney. We didn’t have “house
mothers” so we were pretty much on our own socially,
where we learned from our mistakes. In terms of our studies, we were also free to form our own opinions and points
of view which were honored by our teachers even when they
were half baked and patently weak. In short, we learned to
be responsible for ourselves and to think for ourselves. What
more could one ask of a college education?

Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: Douglas and I have traveled and stayed in many nice places thanks to the paper
industry, my trusteeship at the Virginia Retirement System,
and teacher meetings. Annual visits include NYC, the Waldorf, Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, several trips to California
(San Francisco, Stanford Court, La Bourgogne), Monterey
(Steinbeck Museum), Carmel, Pebble Beach, Santa Barbara,
Biltmore, Sam Simeon, San Diego (Hotel del Coronado). Additionally, wonderful trips to Rome, Venice, London, Bath,
and Paris, and train from London to Paris under the English
Channel.
Favorite H-SC Memory: Dean T. Edward Crawley, Dean of
Students, and my professor for American Literature....conversation similar to this:

RBW—“Dean Crawley, about the assignment—I read it and really didn’t understand it.”
TEC—“Well Mr. Wallace, how many times did you read it....just once?”
RBW—“Yes, sir, I read it very carefully once.”
TEC—“Well, Mr. Wallace, when you read something, and don’t comprehend it, what is
left to do?”
RBW—“I am not certain, if I don’t understand it.”
TEC—“You read it again.”
RBW—“But what if still don’t get it?”
TEC—“Well, Mr. Wallace what would the next step be?”
RBW—“Re-reading it again?”
TEC—“Oh, Mr. Wallace, in your case, I think you are on a great adventure.”
Lord, how many times have I shared that story..... that grade of 84 was the best grade
earned at H-SC.
A lasting H-SC value: So many values, so little time.....
You will not succeed in fighting your spiritual thoughts sprouted from the liberal arts
education at H-SC.
That place plants many inconvenient self examinations, and commitments, which one does
not want to face.
It can often war against your better worldly ambitions, and really can get in the way of
what many view as the “good life.” But, the H-SC experience will not leave you alone, and
will nag you more than occasionally to venture forth on “the road less traveled.” She is a
wonderment to behold !

hearing the slate roofing sliding off one by one and crashing to the ground.
Another memory was the march on Dr. Clower’s house
and he came out on the porch and addressed us. I can’t
recall what it was about, but I admired him for confronting us.

never regretted my decision to attend H-SC.

Collins in Covington in the practice of law in 1963; later
became Collins & Wilson; Collins, Wilson & Collins;
Collins, Wilson, Collins & Singletary; Wilson & Updike;
Wilson, Updike & Nicely. The firm does almost entirely
personal injury work, is AV rated by Martindale Hubbell
and two of the partners, William T. Wilson and Russell
W. Updike, have been named super lawyers in the Richmond Super Lawyers Magazine. The other partner, Nolan
R. Nicely, Jr. (H-SC 1991) was named a “rising star” by the
same magazine.
Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: I have been lucky to
travel all over the world. Lang and I have both had prior
marriages. I served in the Virginia House of Delegates
1974–1989 and during that time I got to meet lots of
very unusual and exciting people including several U.S.
Presidents, the Queen of England and Prince Philip, and
Jacques Cousteau, to name a few. I still hunt and fish for
a living to provide food for the family. Lang and I enjoy
good health and live on a farm in Alleghany County with
3 dogs, 1 cat, and 1 horse.
Favorite H-SC Memory: Fred Hoback, my roommate, and
I decided that we would go out on the morning of the HSC—Randolph-Macon football game to hunt for wild turkeys. We had been told by Coaches Thalman and Fulton

that we needed to get our rest and to think about nothing except the big game. The “big
game” for us was the wild turkey that morning and we brought one back to school. We saw
Dean Crawley, who at the time was teaching us English Literature. We thought that giving
him turkey might improve our chances of getting a better grade. As we were delivering
the turkey to Dean Crawley next to the College Church, we heard a car stop behind us.
Looking around we saw two very angry coaches. We were ordered by the coaches to come
over to their car immediately. There we were, caught between being killed by two coaches
and failing English Literature. Faced with our dilemma, we finished our transaction with
Dean Crawley and then went over to the coach’s car. Needless to say, they were not pleased
and sent both of us to our room saying that we would not play in the game. Fortunately,
and lucky for us, they had a change of heart and sent for us just before game time. As you
might guess, Fred and I played our hardest that day—our lives depended on it!
A lasting H-SC value: The Honor System at Hampden-Sydney has always been a think
of wonder to me. I remember Hal McVey corralling the freshman class in the balcony at
Johns Auditorium and giving us a lecture about how the Honor System worked at H-SC.
After that I watched it work throughout my four years and I got to see it work more closely
when I served on the Honor Court. I remember when UVa had trouble with their Honor
System and sent a delegation to H-SC to study our Honor System. Our system worked
well, although we had lots of freedom at H-SC to come and go as we pleased. We were
bound to act honorably and honestly in all of our dealings. That guiding light and those
values have served me well since I left Hampden-Sydney.
