THE LOW DOWN THE MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF ARLINGTON AREA STREET RODS APRIL, 2013 April Meetings April 4th & 18th: DIXIE HOUSE CAFE 6200 East Lancaster Ave, Fort Worth TX 76112 http://dixiehousecafe.com/ Come eat with us at 6:00 P.M. / Meetings start at about 7:00pm 2013 AASR OFFICERS President: Don Kemp!! Vice President: Bill Ancona!! Secretary/Treasurer: Dave Cain!! Newsletter Editor: Bill Geer ! Parade. Jess called on Rick Duffin for the third GM product. After hours of cleaning and polishing to get the shine needed for such a job, Rick realized he had a schedule conflict, (oh, what would it be like to be Duffin for a day?), so he called on me to fill in. After hours of waiting in the parade line, the officials told us they had Ford products brought in to chauffer the representatives. So dumbfounded as I was, I looked at Jess and asked, "What lessons were learned from this"? Jess came back and said, "Does anyone have any T‐Birds for sale? I need to be prepared for the next time". He stopped and sat there for a moment then said, "No next time, I justdon't open the door". President’s Corner by Don Kemp My how time flies when you’re having fun! Here it is the end of March. Where have the last months gone? A lot has taken place in the last 3 months: Dallas Autorama, Good‐Guys, a few local car shows, dinner runs, and great turn outs at our club meetings along with some great guest speakers. There are some great things ahead of us. We are working on a benefit car show along with some sort of 40th year celebration. We are trying to line up some more guest speakers. If anyone has any thoughts or ideas please pass them along to me. I want to thank everyone for their patience and their continued participation and look forward to the next 9 months, and I'd like to ask that we continue to remember our guys that have not been able to attend due to health or other reasons. __________________________________________________ Texas Independence Day Parade by Don Kemp When you need help, who ya gonna call? The City of Kennedale Chamber of Commerce called on Mr. Jess Jordan. They were in need of three fine examples of GM products to chauffer state representatives in their annual Independence Day _____________________________________ The Donut Derelicts Hot Rod Cruise-in Reporting from the road – Craig & Gelia Coleman On a cool California Saturday morning in February, we rolled out bright and early to attend the Donut Derelicts long running hot rod cruise-in. The location is in Huntington Beach, California in a shopping center parking lot not too far from the beach, but most importantly adjacent to a great donut shop! How can you beat the combination of cool beach morning air, hot coffee, great donuts and hot cars everywhere? This has become one of our regular stops when in Southern California over the years. The History of the “Donut Derelicts” (from their website) Back in 1986 in sunny Southern California, four buddies who some years before went to high school together, met at a small neighborhood donut shop at the corner of Adams and Magnolia Ave. in Huntingto n Beach, California. This was the humble beginning s of what was to become "Donut Derelicts", the largest and most well-known casual hot rod gathering in the world. These four friends actually gathered to take their sons dirt bike riding. As time went on, the guys would show up in their hot rods and classic cars. Other guys in the area began to notice the couple of cars gathering, and as one thing led to another, the small group began to grow…6 cars, then 10, then 15 and so on. One day after one of the neighborhood hot rodders had been drawing cartoons for "Street Rodder" magazine, he invited one of the editors to the donut shop gathering. The magazine editor was so taken by the group, he photographed one of the unique cars and wrote a small article for the magazine entitled "Hot Rodders Coffee Break". This set off an explosion! When the magazine hit the stands, 75 cars showed up to the small donut shop. The "Donut Derelicts' came about as two of the guys, Jim McCain and Rick Finn were compiling a phone list…the name stuck! Over 75 cars were showing up each and every Saturday. Their group began to include such names as Art Chrisman, drag racer from the 60's, Little John Butera, hot rod builder (formerly with Hot Rods by Boyd"), and Chip Foose, builder, artist and designer…the list goes on and on. Each and every Saturday you can expect to see everything from "backyard rat rods" to "America's most beautiful roadster". Chrysler concept cars and new factory releases are but a few surprises. Back about 1989 Rick Finn, world famous motor sports artist, was asked to create a T-Shirt to represent the group. After a quick idea was scribbled on a napkin, the first "Donut Derelicts" T-Shirt was born. At first there was no plan to follow up the initial T-shirt design, but the response was so overwhelming other soon followed. Many years have passed and dozens of T-shirts have been created, along with an ever-growing accessory line for hot rod related products. Today you can cruise in to the "Donut Derelicts" and be amazed by the variety and quality of cars that drop by to join in the most famous car gathering in the world. Cruise by next Saturday…you will be amazed! HAPPY CRUISING The following link will take you to a YouTube video about the Donut Derelicts. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedd ed&v=2iDcL5IUrXE Their website is at: http://www.donutderelicts.com There are a lot of pictures on their website of the variety of hot rods, classics and exotics found in the parking lot on any given Saturday morning. If you ever find yourself near Huntington Beach, California with nothing to do at about 6am Saturday morning you gotta go see the Donut Derelicts! Reporting from the road – Craig & Gelia Coleman Club Dinner Runs By Don Smith Edelweiss German Restaurant - February 28, 2013 Open since 1967, true Bavarian charm resides at an unlikely location in west Fort Worth. The décor is Bavarian chalet with dark wood accents. We were served fine German cuisine from “die kuche” (the kitchen) of Master Chef Bernd Suhnerzinger. Excellent and unique food, great service and the atmosphere were enjoyed by us all. We had 24 members and wives present. Accordion music was supplied by Bernd himself. He took requests, but he didn’t necessarily play them. Carolyn and I did the “chicken dance”. We were the only ones that weren’t chickens! A good time was had by all. _____________________________________________ My Mother Was Right! By Don Smith Arlington Steak House – March 14, 2013 Arlington Steak House has been in business since 1931 at the same location. This long-time steak house is nothing but simple, with only home-style meals. We made it our March Club Dinner meeting spot. Dick Brink, owner/manager, gave us a twenty dollar gift certificate to use as we please. We asked him to pick his choice of cars to receive the gift certificate as an award. Marc Byers’ ’56 Chevy, well deserved, was picked. If we had over 15 cars, Dick said, we could have a 2nd $20 gift certificate. Maybe Don Kemp will use it as an award at the next club meeting. A total of 40 members and wives enjoyed the steak house menu items. We just barely fit in the private dining room. The parking lot was full and over flowing. Sorry if you missed it. A good time was had by all. I am a “Hot Rod Hoodlum”. Bonneville Land Speed racing . . . Yes Drag racing . . . Yes Street rod shows and events – Indoor / outdoor. . . Yes I like ‘em all! I believe it’s our generation; we can’t help it. Rust out, burn out; pick one. I think I’ll probably burn out. So when the Annual T.H.A.W. Drags and Car Show was happening in Denton, we were there. Five cars left South Arlington at 8:30 A.M., Saturday, March 2, 2013, to cruze up to the Denton For Fun and Frolic. I had my ’41 “2Flat” Fiat Drag Car there to make a few runs just for fun. Well I’ll tell you it was cold (48°). I run the “2Flat car on alcohol. At 48°, it will not start or run. We drained the alcohol, and put in gasoline. We re‐jetted the car for gas, started it, and warmed it up to 200° (engine temp). Quickly, we drained the gasoline, replaced it with alcohol, changed the jets, and she fired up. On our only run, the driver ran it out too far in low gear, and blew out the rear main seal! We need a tach in the “2Flat” thing. We would fire the driver, but he is our sponsor. Of course at 48°, wind chill was 34°, we were looking for a reason to go home. Next chance for fun is April 13th in Temple. I’m there! Come go and let’s have some fun! Don’t rust out! _____________________________________________ Remember when even the “big” racing teams didn’t have a semi? ____________________________________________ Of course, trailering it to Denton, unloading, starting (finally), warming up, towing to the start line takes approximately 3 hours. Burn out, staging, making a pass takes around 3 minutes! 6.65 seconds of the 3 minutes is the time it took to make a run. And, yes, I would do it all again, again, and again! This dragster was powered by a Hydrogen Peroxide rocket engine! There were two cylinders in the car under high pressure. One had hydrogen and one had Oxygen. Of course H2 and O2 have a strong affinity for one another. They want to get together really bad and make water! But not without quite a reaction! Result: Quarter Mile in about 3.50 seconds. _____________________________________________ Today’s Bad Idea No safety glasses or hearing protection! This car was outlawed after one season in 1975. It was just too dangerous. _____________________________________________ This is the Dodge Tomahawk capable of speeds up to 420 mph and an acceleration of 0 to 60 miles an hour in 2.5 seconds. The estimated top speed was never tested and was based on horsepower and drive ratio but ignored wind resistance, drag and rolling resistance; some experts predicted that without proper streamlining a rider would be lifted off the bike like a kite at about 200 miles an hour. The Tomahawk carries a 500 hp 8.3‐liter the 10 SRT 10 engine which was designed for the SRT Viper sports car. Having four wheels instead of two the Tomahawk is actually a quadricycle. Each Dodge Tomahawk was hand built and offered for sale at $550,000. Nine Tomahawks were sold to the public.
