F. Sikes, on August 2, 1965, and the U. S. Senate Bill 2346 Senator Spessard Holland, on August 30, 1965, the permanent site for the main campus in Niceville was approved by the Board of Public Instruction and ownership transferred from the U. S. Government (Eglin AFB) to the Okaloosa County Board of Public Instruction for exclusive use of OWJC; and WHEREAS, in the college’s first year of operation, OWJC students selected the “Raiders” as the college’s official mascot name, in honor of the Doolittle Raiders, WWII heroes, who trained for their historic mission at Eglin; and WHEREAS, the first commencement of 85 charter students took place on May 1, 1966, in Perrine Park, Valparaiso; and WHEREAS, governance of OWJC was transferred from the Okaloosa County Board of Public Instruction to the OWJC Board of Trustees on July 1, 1968, and the college moved to a new permanent campus in Niceville in December 1968; and WHEREAS, a HUD grant was approved for the establishment of the OWJC Chautauqua Neighborhood Center in DeFuniak Springs with a groundbreaking ceremony held on September 4, 1970; and WHEREAS, Dual Enrollment, a state program enacted by the Florida Legislature in 1971, began at the college in 1972 to enable high school students to earn college credits while still in high school; and WHEREAS, a 2 + 2 program was established with the University of West Florida in winter semester 1982, with start-up monies being appropriated by the 1983 Legislature for a Joint Center in Fort Walton Beach; and w 9 w Shires Contracting Steve Shires 850-585-0762 • www.ShiresContracting.net w 10 w OWJC to NWFSC History Highlights, Continued WHEREAS, recognizing the importance of providing direct on-site college education and services at the local military bases, the college established centers at Eglin Air Force Base and Hurlburt Field in 1983; and WHEREAS, the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra at Okaloosa-Walton Junior College was established in August 1987; and WHEREAS, the official name of the college was changed March 15, 1988, to OKALOOSA-WALTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE; and WHEREAS, local community leaders partnered with the college to establish the OWCC Foundation in November 1988 to provide charitable and educational aid to the college for enhanced educational opportunities, instruction, and other related activities, resulting in more than $16 million in scholarships and support to the college since its inception; and WHEREAS, by Congressional Act, H.R. 5291 - Congressman Earl Hutto, land has been designated for a permanent site of the Okaloosa-Walton Community College/ University of West Florida Joint Center in Fort Walton Beach on October 18, 1988 with construction groundbreaking in August 1990 and the new joint campus opening for classes in August 1992; and WHEREAS, the college has provided higher education opportunities and adult basic education instruction in north Okaloosa County for more than thirty years and purchased the Robert L.F. Sikes City of Crestview Library building in 1993 to provide a permanent college instructional location in the area, named the Robert L.F. Sikes Education Center expansion in Crestview and the South Walton Center in Walton County; and WHEREAS, the Collegiate High School was established in 2000 at the Niceville campus and is consistently among the state’s top performing high schools, providing opportunities for 10th, 11th and 12th grade students to earn college credits and an Associate degree simultaneously; and WHEREAS, through a cooperative effort with the University of West Florida, baccalaureate degree opportunities were first offered at the college’s Niceville campus in 2000; and WHEREAS, the State Board of Education authorized OWCC to develop baccalaureate degree programs in April 2003, and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges awarded the college Level II accreditation status in December 2003 to award baccalaureate degrees, and the college began baccalaureate programs of study starting fall semester 2004; and WHEREAS, the official name of the college was changed July 1, 2004, to OKALOOSAWALTON COLLEGE to reflect the new accreditation to award bachelor’s degrees; and WHEREAS, the Florida Legislature passed the “State College Bill” establishing the Florida College System in 2008, which was signed by Florida’s governor on June 12, 2008, at a ceremony held at the college’s Niceville campus; and WHEREAS, the District Board of Trustees changed the official name of the college to NORTHWEST FLORIDA STATE COLLEGE on July 8, 2008; and WHEREAS, the college recognized the need for expanded credit and non-credit opportunities in Walton County and thus constructed the South Walton Center, which opened for classes January 6, 2009, as the college’s seventh area location; and WHEREAS, the college has provided a wide variety of non-credit and postsecondary vocational credit programs to area citizens over the years, including college preparatory, adult basic education, literacy, adult vocational, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), GED preparation, continuing education, and personal enrichment courses and professional skills training; and w 13 w 850.243.7001 • [email protected] w 14 w OWJC to NWFSC History Highlights, Continued WHEREAS, the college has awarded more than 35,440 degrees and certificates to students and has served more than 350,160 individuals since its inception, and WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees designated the calendar year 1989 to commemorate the college’s 25th anniversary and the period of April 2003 to May 2004 to commemorate the college’s 40th anniversary; BE IT RESOLVED that Northwest Florida State College be commended for its stellar 50 years of service to provide educational opportunities from GED to Bachelor’s degrees, cultural enrichment, and more to improve the lives of its students and the regional citizenry; and THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that: Northwest Florida State College will officially celebrate its 50th Anniversary from April 17, 2013 through August 30, 2014 with special recognitions and events and that all official college publications reflect this milestone in the history of NWFSC. Adopted by the Board of Trustees in Regular Session on this 19th day of February, 2013. w 15 w Performers • Joan Burton (Guitar/Harp/Vocals) Joan is a recording artist with more than 15 years in the music industry. In addition to vocals that captivate an audience with its range and flawless control, she is an accomplished guitarist and pianist. Originally from Rochester, New York, Joan performed in a wide variety of acts, most notably an all-original group, The Joan Burton Band. On her first CD, “Only a Moment Away,” she worked with Starship’s legendary guitarist Craig Chaquico. On her latest CD, Joan teams with Lou Gramm of Foreigner, who co-wrote one of the songs with Joan and produced three of the tracks. She has appeared on stage with Greg Lake of ELP and Richard Marx, and has opened for Paul Rogers, Electric Light Orchestra, and Peter Frampton. Joan now calls Myrtle Beach, South Carolina home. • Scott Leftwich (Guitar/Vocals) Scott is a singer/songwriter/guitarist who hails from Greensboro, North Carolina. His indie rock band, Scott Leftwich & the Atarians, was selected to open for Journey and Def Leppard in 2006. He has also performed with Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley and other national acts at venues across the country, including LA’s Whiskey A-Go-Go. He has written and recorded soundtracks for a number of independent films and has recorded six CDs, including Love in 2012 which received critical acclaim from national publications and music blogs. • Daryn Owen (Bass/Vocals) Daryn began his musical career in 1983 as a guitarist/vocalist with Solution, a touring show band. Expanding his horizons in 1990, he joined Mystic Pie, a popular progressive/ jazz rock ensemble. Daryn also worked for six years as a front-of-house sound engineer with Apex Sound & Lighting. He returned to the stage in 2006, performing with The Reach Band at festivals and venues in the Carolinas, and then with Smokin’, a touring tribute to arena rock. • David Krol (Keyboards/Guitar/Vocals) David hails from Charlotte, North Carolina and has been touring professionally since the age of seventeen. He has performed with The Beach Boys, Kiss, The Producers, Eddie Money, The Grassroots, Pat Travers, Joe Davis, and The Rossington Collins Band. In 1999, he founded Smokin’, an arena rock tribute act that has toured extensively. Dave is also an experienced audio engineer and road manager. His musical strength lies in his chameleon-like versatility and the ability to coax a wide range of instruments from his multiple keyboards. • Eddie Darst (Lead Guitar/Sitar/Vocals) Eddie got into music as a drummer in 1968. After a few years he switched to guitar, which has been his passion for 38 years. After playing in rock and funk shows through the ‘70s and ‘80s, he formed the band Mere Mortals in 1995 and released two CDs. In 2004, he opened a 48-track recording studio, Blue Wynds, and established an Alan Parsons Project-style studio venture called Line of Fire which released two CDs on Tribunal Records. In 2007, he joined the arena rock tribute Smokin’ , before joining This Is The ‘60s. Eddie lives in Greensboro, North Carolina. w 16 w Performers, Continued • Freddie Trumbower (Drums/Percussion) Freddie has been playing drums since 1969. With his trademark versatility, he is just as comfortable playing Ringo Starr fills in a Beatles tune as he is pounding through complex John Bonham triplets in a Led Zeppelin number. Raised in a suburb of Chicago, his early ventures into music were in symphonic and jazz bands. In 1983, he gravitated to rock, playing in a number of metal and classic rock bands in the Midwest, including Passion Killer and regional favorites Hanover Fist. His versatility brought him studio session work ranging from country music to hard rock. Freddie now resides in Charlotte, North Carolina. • Dara Creswell (Dancer/Vocals) Born and raised in North Carolina, Dara has been an enthusiastic dancer from a young age. She has been dancing consistently for over two decades, many of those years on the Dance Specialties Illusion Dance Troop, a competitive team that travels across the country. Dara is a recent graduate of UNC-Charlotte where she danced with the school’s dance team the “Gold Dusters.” Recently she has been using her dancing talents as a member of the Checkmates, a dance team that performs at Charlotte Checkers Hockey games, and at community events across the Charlotte Metro area. • Anna Rednour (Dancer/Vocals) Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Anna keeps busy working as an actor, dancer, singer, and musician. Even at the tender age of nineteen, she has already amassed an impressive resume in the performing arts world. She can be seen as a principle dancer in the Warner Brothers motion picture A Cinderella Story 3, as well as the films Hunger Games and Break Up. On stage, she has appeared as both a dancer and singer in regional productions of The Wizard of Oz, Jungle Book, Swingtime Canteen, Alice in Wonderland, Charlotte’s Web, and The Big Bad Musical. Anna has also performed as a featured dancer and voice soloist at Walt Disney World. Production Staff • Jim Duffy (Producer/Director/Tour Manager) Jim is an Emmy Award-winning television producer/writer/director who began his career as a CBS news cameraman and producer in 1972. In 1979, he established his own production company, Venture Media. He has written and produced documentaries for Discovery Channel, Travel Channel, the National Park Service, the Armed Forces Network, and the U.S. Navy on topics ranging from the Beatles, to the Blue Angels, to Abraham Lincoln. As a contributing writer for Modern Drummer Magazine, he has penned articles on Ringo Starr, Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell, and the Top 10 Rock Drummers of the 1960s. His numerous production honors include an Emmy Award, sixteen Telly Awards, and twenty Addy Awards. He was named to the Top 100 Multimedia Producers list by AV/Multimedia Producer Magazine and is listed in Who’s Who in Media & Communication. Jim is also a drummer and guitarist, performing in numerous rock bands since 1967, including the Beatles tribute band Cavern. As owner and president of Lyric Media—a multimedia concert production company—Jim has combined his extensive documentary storytelling experience with his background as a rock musician to develop a new and unique concert experience. w 17 w Production Staff, continued • Greg Duffy (Production Designer/Associate Producer) Greg has been designing looks and graphics packages for broadcast programming for six years. His work is seen on the Armed Forces Network, Travel Channel, the Pentagon Channel, and numerous DVDs and home entertainment projects. As Lyric Media’s Art Director, Greg works as graphic designer, animator, and Avid video editor, utilizing a wide range of computer programs and workstations. • Bruce Pilato (Associate Producer/Marketing Director) Bruce is a 34-year veteran of the entertainment and music business. He owns and operates Pilato Entertainment, Marketing & Media, LLC in New York, providing entertainment marketing, artist management, tour management, promotion, and project development for a number of domestic and international clients. He has worked in management and marketing for a number of established acts including Emerson Lake & Palmer, Asia, Foreigner, Yes, and The Tubes. In 2001, Bruce worked with ex-Beatle Ringo Starr in developing the original line-up for Ringo’s All Starr Band, as well as planning and marketing the All Starr Tour. As a respected music journalist, Bruce is a contributing editor/writer for Variety, as well as The Associated Press, USA Today, New Music Review, Mix Magazine, Hit Parader, and Us Weekly. • Dawn Rickus (Choreographer) Dawn has been working as a professional dancer, choreographer, and instructor for over twenty years. She began her career as an instructor for dance studios in North Carolina. At the age of 21 she was hired as a dancer for Paramount Parks where she performed in numerous theme park musicals and stage productions. She has since been seen in television commercials, feature films, music videos, and stage productions. She also worked as New Faces Director and Scout for one of the leading talent agencies in the Southeast. Dawn has choreographed dancers for country star Jake Clayton’s music video Kickin’ Up Dust, as well as theater productions of Nunsense, 1940’s Radio Hour, Alice in Wonderland, and Radio Gals. She also choreographs stage shows for the Havana Social Club & Ballroom.
