While you may not notice it yet, but as of right now, many countries around the world, including Malaysia, are transitioning or have transitioned into the use of 4G telecommunications. What does this mean? Well, for starters, it’s the adoption of a faster, more efficient form of mobile communications standards of LTE (Long Term Evolution) – the next step of keeping in touch with your loved one, if you will. 4G and LTE Unmasked The State of 4G in Malaysia 4G is essentially the abbreviation of the words ‘fourth generation’. At present, 4G is marketed as 4G LTE. LTE is a standard used to describe wireless communication of high-speed data for mobile phones and data terminals. It is based on the GSM/EDGE and UMTS/HSPA network technologies and is a combination of different radio interfaces assimilated into core networks. The goal of LTE is to increase the capacity and speed of wireless data networks using new DSP (Digital Signal Processing) techniques and modulations that were developed around the turn of the millennium. While the world has reached the supposed halfway point of 4G LTE implementation, Malaysian telcos only began evolving their lines in order to accommodate the shift towards 4G LTE as recent as 2012. Of the major telcos in the country, Maxis Communications was the first telco to officially announce and implement the provision of 4G LTE service that is integrated seamlessly with the existing 3G networks. At present, Maxis has made its 4G LTE network available in selected parts of the Klang Valley, Cyberjaya and is steadily increasing its reach. Walking the same line is Celcom, which is part of the Axiata group of companies. Like Maxis, Celcom intends to introduce the wonders and lightningfast speeds of 4G LTE to Malaysian consumers, allowing them to ride on the 2,600MHz spectrum. Like Maxis, Celcom’s 4G LTE network availability is limited to specific areas, as the service is still in its infancy stages. As if that weren’t enough, DiGi is also underway with its ‘The Tomorrow Network’ network modernization towards providing fiber-like 4G LTE speeds for its users, both existing and future potentials. Plans were underway ever since DiGi announced that it will be upgrading all of its network sites in the country, which will be completed by 2013. Regardless of the players, one thing is certain: 4G LTE has finally arrived on our shores. And it’s only going to get faster and better from here on out.
