{ Camera Buying Guide }
°Digital Camera Buying Guide
What to Look Out For in Your Camera Purchase
MICRO FOUR
THIRDS
Developed by Olympus and Panasonic and announced in 2008, the Micro Four Thirds takes the sensor
that was made for a DSLR and fitted it into a smaller package by omitting a mirror and pentaprism.
The result is an interchangeable lens camera that is more portable than a DSLR, yet capable of taking
quality pictures.
Olympus OM-D E-M1
Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GM1
nown for its fast and high-quality photos and videos, this
camera is feature-packed. It is weather-sealed to protect itself
from the elements, making it a perfect companion for the
adventurous photographer who’s not into dragging a large DSLR
around. But, remember to get a matching weather-sealed lens for full
protection. The camera, however, is more suitable for the enthusiasts and
its vast selection of modes and settings could prove daunting to the
beginner. It also takes a little finessing to get the most out of the camera.
Nevertheless, we cannot overlook the pedigree that is Olympus.
quality camera, the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GM1 has
everything one would expect from a modern digital
camera. It has a reliable iAuto mode that is very useful
for beginners, or those who just want to point, shoot, and get the
best out of what they paid for. Portable and capable, the camera
supports shooting in RAW and the kit lens that comes with it is
quite impressive. It is also fitted with a crisp touchscreen display
that we wished could swivel. Still, this is a great camera right out
of the box.
K
MIRRORLESS
A
The Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera (MILC) is a class of camera with many names and many
sensor specifications. It basically refers to any camera with an interchangeable lens system but omits
the mirror reflex viewfinder, much like the Micro Four Thirds. However, the size of the sensors varies
from 1/2.3-inches to full frame.
Sony Alpha 6000
Nikon 1 J4
porting a huge 23.5 x 15.6mm 24.3MP Exmor HD CMOS
sensor, the Sony Alpha 6000 is no stranger to accolades.
Capable of producing fantastic pictures, the camera
continues Sony’s recent streak of exceptional digital cameras. It is
also fitted with a digital viewfinder that will make composing pictures
simpler and easier than cameras that solely rely on the LCD screen.
As it’s not equipped with a touchscreen, navigating through the
camera options may need some getting used to, but it is worth it.
he legendary DSLR camera maker’s entry into the
mirrorless scene created a splash and spawned many
iterations. Its latest, the Nikon 1 J4, is touted to be
speedy with the ability to capture 20 frames per second in burst
mode. It is also capable of capturing full resolution still images,
while recording in 1080p at 60 FPS. This means that you will
never miss a moment. The camera is also small, so small that it
uses a microSD instead of a standard SD card as storage.

{ Camera Buying Guide }
One of the most important aspects of choosing a digital camera is the form
factor. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses, ranging from portability to
versatility to image quality. Here, we take a look at the four basic types of digital
cameras, including some of our recommendations, to help you make your decision.
ADVANCED
POINT AND
SHOOT
MICRO
FOUR
THIRDS
MIRRORLESS
ADVANCED
POINT AND
SHOOT
DSLR
Point and shoot cameras are simple and easy to use. Simply point the camera at a subject and take a
picture. However, its compact size and fixed lens attracted many enthusiasts who want more features,
more capabilities – all in the same compact design. The demand created a new class of cameras, the
Advanced Point and Shoot.
Olympus STYLUS 1
Canon PowerShot SX700 HS
his small camera is capable of producing fine quality pictures,
thanks to its excellent 10.7x zoom, f/2.8 lens. Its shooting
performance is notable especially when compared to other
cameras of its ilk. Its picture quality, however, may require a little
tweaking. In typical Olympus style, the STYLUS 1’s settings are fully
customizable, giving it a DSLR feel. On top of it all, the camera also
features a touchscreen and an electronic viewfinder.
eed something small to shoot landscape and far-away
objects? Then, the Canon PowerShot SX700 HS may be the
camera you’re looking for. The travel zoom camera features
the latest image processing engine from Canon, the DIGIC 6. Its
biggest feature is its 25mm-750mm f/3.2-6.9 lens. It may not be the
brightest lens on a compact, but it certainly does the job well. For
easy connectivity, the camera also has Wi-Fi and NFC
T
DSLR
N
The Digital Single-Lens Reflex camera is the symbol of quality in photography. Loved by professionals
and enthusiasts alike, no other digital camera could match the quality and performance of a DSLR.
However, what makes it unique: its interchangeable lens, and mirror and pentaprism viewfinder
technology, is similar to that used in the days of film photography.
Nikon D7100
Canon EOS 70D
he name of the game is speed and the Nikon D7100 is speedy
with 51-point autofocus system. It also has a startup time to
match. It’s well designed and also comfortable to use, both very
important features of the large and relatively bulky DSLR. The camera
also has very good low light performance at high ISO. Its picture quality
may be only slightly better than its cheaper sibling, but it more than
makes up for it in speed.
anon’s most recent workhorse, the EOS 70D, has a notable
autofocus performance and feature sets specifically
targeted towards its audience. Controls are easy and hands
on, although the camera also has a touchscreen display. Sharing
photos directly from the camera is also easy with its built-in Wi-Fi
connectivity.

°Sharing is Caring
Make the Most of Your Camera’s Built-in Wi-Fi
A photo not shared might as well not exist and what easier way
to share a photo then to use Wi-Fi or your smartphone? Camera
makers understand this sentiment and have included built-in Wi-Fi
capabilities into their cameras. There are three basic ways in which
Wi-Fi is implemented in a camera:
Direct Connection
to the Web
Pairing Camera
to a Smartphone
Using a Smartphone as
Remote Viewfinder
ameras like the new Samsung NX
mini is built for sharing. It has the
capability to connect to a Wi-Fi
network and upload pictures directly to
social networks without the need of
intermediaries. Pictures taken using the
camera can be uploaded to the social media
network of choice almost instantaneously.
i-Fi is not always available wherever
you travel, but more often than not,
your smartphone would have a
signal. The Samsung NX mini, for example,
lets the phone connect and browse the
content of the camera through direct Wi-Fi
connection. The phone can then upload the
pictures online.
sing the Samsung NX mini as an
example again, it lets you use your
portable device as a remote
viewfinder. This is can be used for group
photography, or to take creative pictures in
hard-to-reach locations.
However, cameras like the Samsung
NX mini makes using the camera’s Wi-Fi
feature easier by coupling it with NFC.
Simply tap the camera and your mobile
device together and they are ready to be
paired through Wi-Fi.

°POWER AND
MOBILITY
POWER, PERFORMANCE AND MIND-BLOWING GRAPHICS. SPEED,
MOBILITY AND LIGHTNING-FAST CONNECTIVITY. THESE ARE SOME
OF THE FACTORS THAT ONE CONSIDERS WHEN CHOOSING OR
UPGRADING A DESKTOP SYSTEM OR NOTEBOOK COMPONENTS.
HERE’S OUR LITTLE SMART GUIDE TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT
THESE COMPONENTS DO AND HOW THEY HELP YOUR SYSTEM.
The PC Conundrum
DESKTOP PC UPGRADES
Motherboard
he motherboard is the equivalent of the human spine to the
PC. Without it, your components will not function.
Depending on the size of your PC, motherboards come in
different sizes: mini-ITX, M-ATX, ATX, XL-ATX and even E-ATX. If your
intention is to build a small form-factor PC, then a mini-ITX or M-ATX
size motherboard would be more than enough. If you’re a gamer
building a high-performance PC or an overclocking enthusiast, then
you have a choice from anything in the ATX size motherboards, all
the way to the extreme performance E-ATX motherboards.
T
Memory Modules
he memory modules are just as important as all the other
components. This component is essential in helping your
system perform volumetric and computational
calculations at breakneck speeds. Additionally, memory modules
today are divided into different categories as well, from basic
performance RAM to high-performance RAM with overclockable
memory speeds.
T
VIBES • MAY – JUL 2014
CPU
f the motherboard is the spine, then the CPU is the heart
of the entire PC. The CPU is the main processing unit
which, in layman’s term, delivers orders directly to all
other components about how they should work. Depending on
your preference, you may choose between Intel’s Core processors
or AMD’s APUs. On a side note, your choice of processor is also a
determining factor on the type of motherboard you will need.
I
Graphics Card
his component is the heart of all gaming PC and is usually
found inside the heart of a high-performance PC. This
component runs independent from the CPU and is solely
used to process graphical computations and images. There are two
major brands: NVIDIA GeForce and AMD Radeon. Once again,
depending on your preference and budget, both companies
provide cards from the “bang for your buck” variant graphics card,
all the way to the “money isn’t a problem” top-tier graphics cards.
T
{ Smart Upgrade for Desktop and Notebook PCs }
Power Supply
f course, you can’t run anything on your PC without a
steady source of power. This is where the Power Supply
Unit (PSU for short) comes in. The standard PSU used in
most ordinary PCs usually run at 550W. If your PC is a powerhouse,
then you’ll definitely need a PSU that provides a bare minimum of
750W or more. Keep in mind, the component that tends to draw
the most power is the graphics card, so depending on how many
graphics cards you have in your system, the PSU that is needed
differs exponentially.
O
11
Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) and Solid State Drives (SSDs)
DDs have been around since the arrival of the PC. These
days, HDDs are still widely used by PC owners, simply for
their sheer storage capacities that reach as high as 4TB.
HDDs, however, are relatively slow when compared to the new SSDs.
These storage devices are fast, providing users with near
instantaneous boot-up times and shorter loading times between
programs. The only thing an SSD lacks is the massive storage
capacity in which the HDD possesses. The type of storage you want,
therefore, depends on whether you’re looking for capacity or speed.
H
5
2
6
4
1
3
1. Motherboards all come in different sizes.
2. Intel or AMD. The choice is yours.
3. The RAM is just as important as the other components.
4. Graphics processing requires a graphics card.
5. Without a PSU, nothing will work.
6. Massive HDD storage, or lightning fast SSD boot-up speed.
Mobility Power
NOTEBOOK PC UPGRADES
WHEN IT COMES TO A NOTEBOOK PC, THERE ISN’T VERY MUCH THAT
YOU CAN CHANGE ABOUT IT. HOWEVER, THERE ARE ONE OR TWO
COMPONENTS IN WHICH YOU CAN CHANGE TO EITHER MAKE YOUR
DEVICE A MASSIVE STORAGE BAY OR INTO AN EXTREMELY FAST AND
STEADY MOBILE WORKSTATION.
HDDs and SSDs
ost notebooks today come equipped with either a HDD or
an SSD. The difference between the two formats are stark:
if you want to physically carry your media content with you
wherever you are, then an HDD would be more suitable as they
usually have larger capacities, the largest being 2TB for the 2.5-inch
form factor. If you’re looking for fast boot-ups and short loading
times instead storage capacity, then the SSD should be your
weapon of choice.
Unlike HDDs, SSDs are made out of the same flash memory
modules in which many manufacturers used to build memory
modules. Additionally, because they have less moving parts, the
majority of SSDs on the market are practically shock-absorbent.
M
1
2
1. SSDs are usually the storage format of choice for notebooks.
2. Your notebook’s performance also depends on your memory module.
Memory Modules
otebook PCs and Ultrabooks in general use a very different
kind of memory module compared to the PC. It’s known as
SO-DIMM and is actually smaller in size. The memory
modules in notebooks are actually also primary contributors
towards how fast a programs boots up. Before you go all out on
upgrading the RAM, just remember that the majority of laptops
only support a maximum capacity of 16GB. Only a selective few
notebooks are capable of supporting a 32GB capacity.
