9 – 13 Nov 2011 tickets & info: 01463 234 234 www.invernessfilmfestival.com Sponsored by welcome to the 9th Inverness Film Festival, which this year features a number of Scottish Premières, including the opening screening – Terence Davies’ The Deep Blue Sea, and the closing screening – Steve McQueen’s new film Shame starring the incredible Michael Fassbender. Other premières at IFF include Red Road Director Andrea Arnold’s new version of the classic Brontë story Wuthering Heights (which shows the Yorkshire moors like you’ve never seen them before), and a brand-new version of the 80’s horror The Thing. Alongside the Scottish Premières, you’ll also find two World Premières (The Suppressor and Graders), a great selection of French cinema, have the chance to experience FW Murnau’s 1927 silent film Sunrise accompanied by a brand-new live score, and be able to discover the work of film-maker and director Timothy Neat – the subject of this year’s Retrospective. You can also enjoy an enchanting animated work – Tales of the Night which is simply wonderful, and a heart-warming family friendly version of a classic Australian legend – Red Dog. I’d urge you to try something new this year, step away from convention and take a risk with one of the screenings – I’m sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised. As always, I'll be around during the Festival and I’m always happy to have a chat – just say hi! Enjoy! Paul Taylor PS – You will notice that some of the screenings are certificated as ‘IFF’ rather than the conventional BBFC certificates. This just means that at the time of publication, the BBFC hadn’t given the film a certificate – so we’ve made our best guess. If you are unsure as to the age suitability of any screening, please ask the Box Office staff, or visit the Inverness Film Festival website for up to date information SUPPORTED BY Media Partner: The Inverness Courier Opening Night Gala The Deep Blue Sea Page 6 Closing Night Gala Shame Page 7 Highlights Hunger Page 8 Highlights Wuthering Heights Page 9 Highlights The Whistleblower Page 10 Highlights Another Earth Page 11 Highlights We Have A Pope Page 12 Highlights Like Crazy Page 13 Highlights The Thing Page 14 Highlights Red Dog Page 15 Music Inni Page 16 Film Event Sunrise Page 17 New Scottish Cinema Graders Page 18 New Scottish Cinema The Suppressor Page 19 Fighting On Film Workshop with Ara Paiaya Page 20 French Cinema House Of Tolerance Page 21 French Cinema Angel & Tony Page 22 French Cinema Love Crime Page 23 French Cinema Tales Of The Night Pages 24/25 Page 26/27/28/29 Timetable Retrospective of Timothy Neat Page 30 World Cinema Mysteries Of Lisbon Page 31 World Cinema The White Meadow Page 32 World Cinema Cairo Time Page 33 World Cinema Parked Page 34 World Cinema Take Shelter Page 35 World Cinema Las Acacias Page 36 World Cinema Mad Bastards Page 37 World Cinema Carancho Page 38 World Cinema The Turin Horse Page 39 World Cinema Kosmos Page 40 Documentary Grant Morrison: Talking With Gods Page 41 Documentary The Story Of Film Page 42/43/44 contents Page 4/5 Short Films Page 45 Audience Award Page 46 Tickets & Info INVERNESS FILM FESTIVAL // 3 OPENING NIGHT FILM SCOTTISH PREMIERE INVERNESS FILM FESTIVAL // 4 OPENING NIGHT FILM THE DEEP BLUE SEA Terence Davies returns to the big screen for the first time since 2000’s House of Mirth. Hester Collyer (Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz) leads a privileged life in 1950s London as the beautiful but bored wife of high court judge Sir William Collyer (Simon Russell Beale). To the shock of those around her, she walks out on her marriage and moves in with young ex-RAF pilot, Freddie Page (Tom Hiddleston), with whom she has fallen passionately and dangerously in love. Set in post-war Britain, this deeply moving adaptation of Terence Rattigan's classic play is a study of forbidden love, suppressed desire, and the fear of loneliness. Stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea, what, or whom, should Hester choose? (12A) I WED 09 NOV 19.00 I UK / USA 2011 I 98 mins Director: Terence Davies Starring: Rachel Weisz, Tom Hiddlestone, Simon Russell Beale Thanks to Artificial Eye INVERNESS FILM FESTIVAL // 5 CLOSING NIGHT FILM SHAME SCOTTISH PREMIERE Winner of three prizes at this year’s Venice Film Festival, including Best Actor for Michael Fassbender and the FIPRESCI Prize for Best Film (which is voted for by international film critics). Steve McQueen’s second film, following the powerful Hunger, continues his collaboration with Michael Fassbender (Jane Eyre) who is one of the finest and most versatile actors of recent years. Fassbender plays Brandon, a 30-something man living in New York who is completely unable to manage his sex life. When his younger sister Sissy (played by Carey Mulligan) comes to stay uninvited, her presence heightens Brandon’s frustration and he goes on a hedonistic search of ever-greater sexual pleasures on the city streets. Shame is a compelling and timely examination of the nature of need, how we live our lives and the experiences that shape us. (IFF 18) I SUN 13 NOV 20.00 UK 2011 I 99 mins Director: Steve McQueen Starring: Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan, James Badge Dale Thanks to Momentum Pictures. INVERNESS FILM FESTIVAL // 6 HIGHLIGHTS HUNGER British Turner prize winner Steve McQueen’s debut film tells the story of the last six weeks in the life of IRA prisoner Bobby Sands (Fassbender, who starved himself for two months to prepare for the role). Life inside the notorious prison is powerfully chronicled in one of the best British films of the last decade. Steve McQueen’s new film Shame is the closing IFF film this year. This is a rare chance to re-watch, or discover, his spectacular first film on the big screen. (15) I SAT 12 NOV 13.30 I UK 2008 I 95 mins Director: Steve McQueen Starring: Michael Fassbender, Liam Cunningham, Stuart Graham, Helena Bereen INVERNESS FILM FESTIVAL // 7 HIGHLIGHTS WUTHERING HEIGHTS SCOTTISH PREMIERE Director Andrea Arnold (Fish Tank, Red Road) brings new life to Emily Brontë’s classic moorland tale of obsessive love and class division. In Brontë's novel, a Yorkshire farmer on a visit to Liverpool finds a homeless boy on the streets and takes him home to live as part of his family at their isolated moorland farm. The boy develops an all-consuming relationship with the farmer's daughter, and provokes jealousy and resentment from her brother. Although paying due respect to the original, Arnold’s interpretation is radical, not least in its casting of young unknowns in the lead roles. Equally original is the film's breathtaking visual style; it's unlikely you will ever have seen the Yorkshire Moors so bleakly and beautifully captured on film. Rhoda Williams (Brit Marling) is a bright young astrophysicist who aspires to explore the cosmos, and is accepted into the M.I.T. astrophysics program. At the same time, a brilliant composer named John Burroughs (William Mapother) has reached the pinnacle of his profession and is about to have a second child with his loving wife. On the eve of the discovery of a duplicate Earth, tragedy strikes and the lives of these two strangers suddenly becomes irrevocably intertwined. Estranged from the world and the selves they once knew, the two protagonists embark upon an unlikely love affair and reawaken to life. But when one is presented with the chance of a lifetime opportunity to travel to the other Earth and embrace an alternative reality, which new life will they choose? Felicity Jones plays Alice – a British student living in Los Angeles. She meets and falls in love with an American named Jacob (Anton Yelchin). The more time they spend together the more they fall for each other, but then Alice’s visa runs out and she returns to London. At first they are hopeful about their long distance relationship, then as time passes they realise how hard it is to maintain a long distance relationship, and both begin to appreciate the hardships that come with being in love thousands of miles apart. Campbell’s classic short story ‘Who Goes There?’ (after 1951’s The Thing From Another World and John Carpenter’s cult classic from 1982) has a terrific cast, including Joel Egerton (Animal Kingdom – 2010 IFF) and could be the best version yet. Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has travelled to Antarctica to join a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across a spaceship buried in the ice. When a simple experiment frees an organism from its frozen prison, Kate must join the crew's pilot, Carter (Joel Egerton), to keep it from killing them off one at a time. And in this vast, intense land, a parasite that can mimic anything it touches will pit human against human as it tries to survive and flourish. Kriv Stenders brings Australian cinema back to life with his new movie based on the old Australian story of the Red Dog who united a disparate local community while roaming the Australian outback in search of his long lost master. The screenplay by Daniel Taplitz lays on the nostalgic populism with a trowel, but looks likely to be a true Aussie classic. Red Dog is one of the finest heart warmers in years, it will make you laugh and it will, definitely, make you cry. A truly perfect film for all the family. Inni focuses on the band's performances and stands as a stark counterpoint to Heima's kaleidoscopic richness. Where Heima was lush and expansive, Inni is sparse and near-monochromatic. Filmed in a manner that invites both intimacy and claustrophobia, Inni draws the viewer into a ‘one-on-one’ relationship with the band and depicts just how it feels for both band and fan to experience Sigur Rós live. The Oscar winning film's narrative concerns a married man who falls for a slatternly woman from the city; once under her spell the woman attempts to persuade him to drown his wife. Award-winning Aberdeen-born guitarist Graeme Stephen has composed a powerful new score that brings a radically modern perspective to accompany Murnau's visual masterpiece. Harnessing influences from various musical styles including Folk, Classical and Jazz and featuring the scintillating instrumental talents of Chris Stout (violin), Ben Davis (cello), Phil Bancroft (saxophone) and Chris Wallace (drums/percussion) Stephen’s music speaks loudly of ambition, imagination, nous and harmonic adventure yet teemed with the sort of tuneful realization that swells the heart The Herald (U) I SAT 12 NOV 19.45 PRE CONCERT TALK AT 19.15 ONETOUCH THEATRE I SEAT PRICES £12.00 I REDUCED RATES £10.00 EDEN COURT FRIENDS DISCOUNT APPLIES INVERNESS FILM FESTIVAL // 16 NEW SCOTTISH CINEMA GRADERS WORLD PREMIERE Polish artist Ania works in a restaurant while her sister Celina busks on the streets of Edinburgh. SAT 12 NOV 14.00 I PRICE £5 INVERNESS FILM FESTIVAL // 19 FRENCH CINEMA HOUSE OF TOLERANCE L’APOLLONIDE (SOUVENIRS SE LA MAISON CLOSE) SCOTTISH PREMIERE 2011 Palm d’Or Nominee Set in a Paris brothel (a ‘house of tolerance’) Bertrand Bonello’s highly stylized look at the final days of a fin-de-siècle brothel in Paris conjures up the languid beauty and frank sexuality of French Romantic painting. In the nineteenth century, much of the Parisian sex trade was confined to ‘grands maisons,’ populated by elegant madams and a vetted clientele. They were akin to social clubs, with the gentleman participants expected to be as charming and witty as they might be in more respectable drawing rooms. The ladies were provocatively dressed and, upstairs, occupied numerous boudoirs ready for carnal pleasures. Even in such a controlled environment, dangers still lurked: disease was rampant and lethal, and sometimes even a gentleman might lose his temper and harm one of the women. Angel (Clotilde Hesme) is a young woman falling apart. She arrives at the seaside town of Normandy determined to reconnect with her young son, yet also scared she's unfit to take care of him. Tony (Gregory Gadebois) is a fisherman, trapped in emotional solitude and who lives with his widowed mother. Angel and Tony meet via a personal ad; she is forthright and rough, and her attempts to seduce him are met with surprise: Tony literally can't believe his luck... But will Angel’s secret threaten their future? Rising star Clotilde Hesme (Les Chansons d’Amore) and Grégory Gadebois (Gainsbourg) are so natural in their roles that you find yourself truly caring for them and hoping they make it. With her quiet, intimate approach, Delaporte allows the actors to shine, and the pitch-perfect, wholly naturalistic performances from Hesme and Gadebois elevate this absorbing and sensitive drama, as does the magnificent coastal scenery. Michel Ocelot uses silhouettes and bright colours to tell wondrously fantastical stories full of excitement and adventure. Michel Ocelot’s animated Les Contes de la Nuit (Tales of the Night) is a charming collection of six short allegorical folk tales revolving around ideas of morality and love. Each night a boy and a girl meet in an old run down cinema where they are joined by an old technician who shows them these colourful fantasies that they would otherwise only get to see in their dreams. The audience is plunged into a veritable whirlwind of adventures and escapades, coincidences and revelations, sentiments and violent passions, vengeance and love affairs – all wrapped-up in a rhapsodic voyage from Portugal to France, Italy and as far away as Brazil. Defying any genre, this fable-like tale follows the odyssey of a man who sets out by boat across an archipelago of stark, inhospitable islands on a nameless sea. The film’s narrative floats behind the character of Rahmat as he makes his mysterious rounds by rowboat on Lake Urmia, the largest lake in the Middle-East. Drawing first-hand on the challenges faced by Iranian artists of today, this deeply atmospheric, poetic film is a stark allegory of intolerance, brutality and mystified routine which resonates far beyond the borders of any one state. In December 2010, Mohammad Rasoulof was sentenced to prison, along with his editor – Iranian director Jafar Panahi – for making this, as well as other films. Fletcher uses his background in documentaries to great effect. He succeeds in getting powerful performances from the largely non-professional cast. Fletcher also co-wrote the screenplay with the two main stars; Dean Daley-Jones and Greg Tait, who each drew on their personal experiences – creating the characters and shaping the narrative of the film. TJ (Daley-Jones) is a big city tough-guy who decides to move back to his small Aboriginal town so he can reconnect with his young son – Bullet (Yeeda). Bullet has been living with his grandfather Tex (Tait) who is a local policeman. TJ’s arrival in the town leads him onto a collision course with Tex, but this is a vital part of his redemption. Mad Bastards is an extraordinary film. It is filled with memorable performances and is certain to leave you thinking about the plight of Australia’s Aboriginal communities in a similar way as the outstanding Samson & Delilah (IFF 2009). INVERNESS FILM FESTIVAL // 36 WORLD CINEMA CARANCHO 2010 Cannes Film Festival Official Selection This new film from award-winning Argentinean director Pablo Trapero (Born and Bred, Lion’s Den) starring Ricardo Darín (The Secret In Their Eyes, Nine Queens) examines the countries appalling road safety record. Each year around 8,000 people die and more than 120,000 are injured in road accidents. Darín plays Sosa, an ambulance-chasing lawyer who scours the accidents and emergency wings of hospitals and police stations seeking clients. Although supposedly working for a charity that aids victims, it is, in fact the front for a shady law firm out to secure a slice of the victim’s families compensation. One day, while staking out the scene of an auto wreck, Sosa meets young doctor, Luján (Martina Gusman). Despite her seemingly noble line of work, she has demons of her own, including a drug habit. She finds herself attracted to the morally conflicted lawyer, even after he helps to arrange for an accident for the benefit of a friend. Together they are two damaged souls who try and find some semblance of normality in the other. INVERNESS FILM FESTIVAL // 37 WORLD CINEMA THE TURIN HORSE A TORINÓI LÓ In Turin, in 1889, the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche stopped a cab driver from whipping his horse, then promptly collapsed, living his remaining ten years in more or less demented silence. The Turin Horse is a stunningly composed, leisurely fable. So bold are both the conception and execution of Tarr’s darkly cinematic elegy that the final scenes are as sobering as anything in his – or indeed anyone else’s – body of work. This is a strangely captivating and imaginative film that will confuse and amaze in equal measure.
