At the April 16th celebration of the sacrament of Confirmation Bishop Wypych gave all of our students a prayer card as they were confirmed with a lovely adaptation of a prayer written by Pope Francis on the occasion of the 51st World Day of Prayer for Vocations. This is the Prayer for Vocations those confirmed last weekend were handed, this is the prayer I read at the Masses last weekend: PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS BLESS me with the gift of cour age to r espond to your call. Open my heart to great ideals, to great things. INSPIRE me, your disciple, to loving and giving – so that I may use the gifts you’ve given me to live the dream you have for my life. INSTILL within me a bold and noble path of a life – that I live it well, whether it be in the single life, married life, the diaconate, the priesthood or the consecrated life. UNITE me to J esus thr ough pr ayer and sacr ament, so that I may cooperate with you in building your reign of mercy and truth, of justice and peace. Amen. Today is the fifth Sunday of Easter – we are on our way to once again faithfully celebrating the fifty days of the Easter season. At times in our world, even in North America, when new life in nature is abundant and rich, we may not see new life in relationships, in neighborhoods and in war torn areas of our wounded world. In my recent reading the following struck a chord in my heart and in my soul. “Despite every appearance, sometimes, in the end, love does triumph over hatred. Peace does triumph over chaos. Forgiveness does triumph over bitterness. Hope does triumph over cynicism. Fidelity does triumph over despair. Virtue does triumph over sin. Conscience does triumph over callousness. Life does triumph over death. And good does triumph over evil, always. Mohandas K. Gandhi once wrote: “When I despair, I remember that all through history, the way of truth and love has always won. There have been murderers and tyrants, and for a time they seem invincible. But in the end they always fall. Think of it, always.” 2 The resurrection, most forcibly, makes that point. God has the last word. The resurrection of Jesus is that last word. From the ashes of shame, of seeming defeat, failure, and death, a new, deeper, and eternal life perennially bursts forth. Our faith begins at the very point where it seems it might end, in God’s seeming silence at Jesus’ death.” Can we hold fast to this hope, this truth as we journey with joy to the promise of Pentecost in a few weeks. Today’s gospel can inspire, strengthen and guide us this Easter. John writes: “When Judas had left them, Jesus said, ‘Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and God will glorify him at once. My children, I will be with you only a little while longer. I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.’” Let us live resurrection. Let us love one another. Let us share mercy. Let us live Easter. God bless you with a resurrection faith this Easter!
