A NOTE FROM SCOTT SMITH, DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS
Summer has come and gone and as you receive this, football season
will have begun. Please join us on Saturdays and Sundays in both
lounge areas to watch your favorite college and pro teams.
As most of you may have noticed in our weekly Wednesday e-mails,
we have tried to stress the importance of making reservations for all
activities and meals at Steelwood. It is very difficult for us to provide
you with the level of service that you deserve if we do not know
you’re coming. We do realize that there are times that you may make
a last minute decision, which is fine. Please call us on your way so
we may have ample time to prepare.
By now you have received your 2012 Member Guest invitation. The
tournament is scheduled for October 19th—21st. We hope you are
making plans to attend and I urge you to return your reply card as
soon as possible.
As always, if you have any suggestions and/or concerns please feel
free to contact me at any time.

THE WINE CLOSET, A NOTE FROM DAYNA WANDREY
Another issue of the newsletter is here and once again we get to talk about wine
knowledge. In this issue, we will discuss the different types of wines. All wines fall into
one of these categories: white wine, red wine, rose wine, sparkling wine (includes
champagne), dessert wine, and fortified wine. Within these different categories there are
several different grape types, which are called varietals. A wine’s character and flavor
are determined by the varietal of grape and how the grapes are treated throughout the
wine making process.
Red wine: All red wine is made by growing and processing red (or black) grapes. The end result will vary
greatly not only because of the type of grape used but also because of several other factors. These factors
include the country and region in which the grapes are grown. The climate—temperature, rain
percentages, and soil conditions—as well as the age or ripeness of the grapes and the time of year that they
are harvested are also contributing factors. The way they are treated and processed once they are harvested
can affect the end result as well. The most common red grapes are:
Barbera
 Brunello
 Cabernet Franc
 Cabernet Sauvignon

Dolcetto
 Gamay
 Grenache
 Malbec

Merlot
 Nebbiolo
 Pinot Noir
 Sangiovese
Syrah or Shiraz
 Tempranillo
 Zinfandel


White wine: All types of white wine are made by growing and processing white grapes. Most types of
white wine are lighter or have less body than a red wine. White grape types include:
Chardonnay
 Chenin Blanc
 Gewurztraminer

Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigio
 Riesling
 Sauvignon Blanc

Semillon
 Viognier
 Pinot Blanc

In the next issue, we will cover some wine definitions that may or may not be familiar to you.
On another note, the Clubhouse will begin posting a “Specials Board” in the bar which will feature our
weekly wine and beer specials. Currently, we feature a few different wines by the bottle on weekend
evenings. During the day on Sundays, we will have different drinks specials and will offer a “Buy out the
Bottle” option on Sunday evenings. The “Buy out the Bottle” option allows you to purchase the remainder
of any bottle of red wine that has been opened during the weekend for a discounted price. We hope to see
everyone for our Sunday Specials this fall!
Lastly: for every Steelwood wine glass that is brought back to the Clubhouse during lunch or dinner hours,
you will receive one free glass of our house wine. Please look through your cabinets...you may be sitting
on an entire free bottle of wine!

A NOTE FROM MATT RUSSELL, GOLF PROFESSIONAL
I find a lot of times working with players that they get
“impact” conscious. What I mean by that is their
forward motion to the target slows down or
decelerates at impact. The golf swing is very much
symmetrical. Once you have addressed the golf ball
and are ready to start your swing, you have created a
pivot point. This fixed point is the center of the
sternum or the buttons on your shirt. The club should
swing or pivot on a tilted plane which creates a
“circular” motion around that point. By doing so, the
club head should still be accelerating through impact and your weight will
finish on your front foot. I could get into the physics of how the club head
releases through impact but the simple truth is that the body rotation will do
this for you as long as it is moving toward your front foot. If this happens,
you will notice that the arms are extended shortly after impact and the club
is pointed in the direction of your target. This will create a very balanced
motion and symmetrical golf swing. In the same way that a pitcher’s arm is
extended towards his target shortly after his release point so should the club
after impact. What we don’t want to see is the body rotation slow down and
the arms separate and pull up and/or to the inside of the front foot.
A good drill to do is to take two alignment sticks. Place one sticking out of
the ground on the opposite side of the ball pointing towards the sternum.
Place the second approximately 10 steps or so in front of you in line with your target. The idea is to hit
shots keeping the sternum (or buttons on your shirt) even with stick #1 until after impact when the club
will travel in the direction of stick #2.
As always, if you have questions regarding this tip and/or any other part of your game, please let one of our
golf professionals help you achieve your goals!
Please note: The Saturday Member Golf Game will begin
at 9:30 am during football season.

A FEW WORDS FROM THE CHAPEL AT STEELWOOD
There is a time-honored story about a football game featuring two mismatched teams. The
better team was dominating the game.
The smaller team had one player, however, who might make a difference. His name was
Calhoun and he was the fastest running back in the league. His coach felt that if Calhoun could
get any blocking at all, he could easily break free and outrun the larger players. The coach
talked with his quarterback about giving the ball to Calhoun and letting him run with it. The
quarterback agreed; the first play came and Calhoun did not touch the ball. The third play was
executed and still Calhoun did not get the ball. The coach was furious. It was fourth down. He
sent in word to the quarterback, “Get the ball to Calhoun.” The ball was snapped and the
quarterback pedaled backward and was sacked. The coach was furious as he confronted his quarterback: “I told you four
times to give the ball to Calhoun.”
The quarterback said, “Coach, you don’t understand! Calhoun didn’t want the ball!” Calhoun evidently wasn’t
committed.
One of the most vital qualities of a successful life is commitment, the willingness to carry the ball no matter how large
the adversary. That’s true in the workplace, that’s true in the marriage, that’s true in caring for your health, that’s true in
being a responsible citizen.
The Chapel will resume services on September 2nd at 11 am. All Steelwood members and guests are welcome and
encouraged to worship in the Chapel. The dress code is—well, actually there is no dress code—golf, fishing, and
relaxed attire are all suitable. As always, the Chapel is open for prayer and for us to take a few minutes to reflect.
Peace be with you, JLS+

After hunting for many years, Jeff was introduced to the game
of skeet in Mobile, Alabama. He started competing in NSSA

A NOTE FROM CODY ALEXANDER, GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
We have had a wonderful summer here at Steelwood. We have received nearly 26
inches of rain since June 1st with 27 days of measurable rainfall. The temperatures and
the moisture levels have been perfect for the growth of Bermuda grass.
The final aerification of our growing season was completed with great success. It has
been two and a half weeks and the greens have recovered very well. In the next couple
of weeks, we will begin our fall cultural practices which will get the green speeds back
up to what so many of you love.
The coming months will be filled with prepping the course for our fall tournaments. This will include weed
control and bed detail among other things. We have just removed a number of dead trees this week and that
will be continued throughout the winter.
Please help me welcome Nick Norsworthy to Steelwood. Nick has taken the position of Assistant
Superintendent this summer and has done an outstanding job. He has experience on a couple of respected area
courses and I believe he will be an excellent asset to our team.
